• UIButton doesn't listen to content mode setting?

  firstButton is a UIButton of type Custom. I'm programmatically putting three of them across each cell of a table, thusly: [firstButton setImage:markImage forState:UIControlStateNormal]; [firstButton setContentMode:UIViewContentModeScaleAspectFit]; [cell.contentView addSubview:firstButton]; Elsewhere, I'm telling it to clipToBounds. What I get is a crop of the center square of the image, rather than an aspect-scaled rendering of it. I've tried this lots of ways, including setting the mode property on firstButton.imageView, which also doesn't seem to work.

• Sparse matrices / arrays in Java

  I'm working on a project, written in Java, which requires that I build a very large 2-D sparse array. Very sparse, if that makes a difference. Anyway: the most crucial aspect for this application is efficency in terms of time (assume loads of memory, though not nearly so unlimited as to allow me to use a standard 2-D array -- the key range is in the billions in both dimensions). Out of the kajillion cells in the array, there will be several hundred thousand cells which contain an object. I need to be able to modify cell contents VERY quickly. Anyway: Does anyone know a particularly good library for this purpose? It would have to be Berkeley, LGPL or similar license (no GPL, as the product can't be entirely open-sourced). Or if there's just a very simple way to make a homebrew sparse array object, that'd be fine too. I'm considering MTJ, but haven't heard any opinions on its quality. Thanks!! -Dan

• Trying to resize an NSImage which turns into NSData

  I have an NSImage which I am trying to resize like so; NSImage *capturePreviewFill = [[NSImage alloc] initWithData:previewData]; NSSize newSize; newSize.height = 160; newSize.width = 120; [capturePreviewFill setScalesWhenResized:YES]; [capturePreviewFill setSize:newSize]; NSData *resizedPreviewData = [capturePreviewFill TIFFRepresentation]; resizedCaptureImageBitmapRep = [[NSBitmapImageRep alloc] initWithData:resizedPreviewData]; [saveData writeToFile:@"/Users/ricky/Desktop/Photo.jpg" atomically:YES]; My first issue is that my image gets squashed when I try to resize it and don't conform to the aspect ratio. I read that using -setScalesWhenResized would resolve this problem but it didn't. My second issue is that when I try to write the image to a file, the image isn't actually resized at all. • Which license should I use for my open source project

  Hey everybody - I have an open source project that I'm working on and I'm trying to figure out what liscense would be the best match. Essentially my project is a framework that developers will use to create projects of their own. The vision I had for the licensing of the project (in plain English): The user must not sell the source code or any derivatives. The user must not sell the framework or any derivatives. The user is allowed to sell a program which uses the framework. Basically, I just don't want anyone to abuse the open source aspect of the project, take what I've done and turn around and sell it. • Practical guide to programming paradigms ?

  I think I might be misunderstanding the whole thing and I am looking for some programming wisdom. When faced with a programming challenge, I feel the most important question is "which programming paradigm(s) are better suited to handle it, and how to apply them". A distant second is "which language to use". Yet it seems that most of the programming related content I stumble upon on the Internet has it exactly backwards and focuses mostly on the language choice. An object-oriented solution is fundamentaly the same, whether it's implemented in c++, Java or PHP... So where is the paradigm centered content? Where is the "practical guide to programming paradigms and implementations" and other literature helping bringing real-world and programming concepts together? Note: I already know about "Programming Paradigms for Dummies: What Every Programmer Should Know" from Peter Van Roy.

• samsung HMX-H100P camcorder and video encoding with mencoder

  Hi everyone, my background is totally not related to video stuff so pardon my newbie style. I own a samsung HMX-H100P camcorder and I'm trying to encode videos to be uploaded to Youtube and Vimeo. First problem: videos generated by the camera with no processing appear like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AANbl_DTuzE when I play them with Totem(Linux) or VideoLan. Second problem: When I try to encode the videos produced by the camera using mencoder I get the video at the resolution I chose but those ugly lines and lagging are still present. Here's the command I use: mencoder $inputFile -aspect 16:9 -of lavf -lavfopts format=psp -oac lavc -ovc lavc -lavcopts aglobal=1:vglobal=1:coder=0:vcodec=libx264:acodec=libfaac:vbitrate=4500:abitrate=128 -vf scale=1280:720 -ofps 25000/1001 -o $outputFile Any ideas? • MTU mismatch between GetIfEntry and netsh

  I'm working on pseudo-transport layer software that runs over UDP, providing reliable connection-oriented transmission, as an alternative to TCP. In order to maximize network efficiency, we query the MTU of the "best" network adapter upon initialization. MIB_IFROW row = {0}; row.dwIndex = dwBestIfIndex; dwRes = GetIfEntry(&row); Searching online I found that you can use the following netsh commands to query for this same value, from a command prompt (not a C++ API) netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces The troubling issue is that while row.dwMtu may be set to 1500, snooping the network traffic on the sending laptop shows that our packets are fragmented into 1300 byte packets. netsh also reports that the MTU is 1300. Clearly the value reported by netsh command is the actual used values. Anyone know what API I can call to get the same values as netsh?

  Hey guys. I am 12 years old and I have had a small amount of experience with BASIC. I am thinking about learning Python, but I’m not sure if I should learn the 2.6 version or the 3.0 version. I don’t really care about the support for libraries or anything along those lines quite yet. I was wondering if it is easier to code in 3.0 than 2.6. And is it more fun and productive? I would also appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction for a simple yet complete tutorial that is easy to understand and possible teaches Object Oriented Programing. I don’t really care if it teaches OOP or not. One more thing; if I do learn python, is it possible to easily compile a python source code file into a 'stand-alone' .exe file for Windows? I really liked that functionality in BASIC. Thanks!!!!

• How to sketch out an event-driven system?

  I'm trying to design a system in Node.js (an attempt at solving one of my earlier problems, using Node's concurrency) but I'm running into trouble figuring out how to draw a plan of how the thing should operate. I'm getting very tripped up thinking in terms of callbacks instead of returned values. The flow isn't linear, and it's really boggling my ability to draft it. How does one draw out an operational flow for an event-driven system? I need something I can look at and say "Ok, yes, that's how it will work. I'll start it over here, and it will give me back these results over here." Pictures would be very helpful for this one. Thanks. Edit: I'm looking for something more granular than UML, specifically, something that will help me transition from a blocking and object-oriented programming structure, where I'm comfortable, to a non-blocking and event driven structure, where I'm unfamiliar.

  What is the best application workflow metaphor for Drupal module? In PHP frameworks we think MVC-style. How do we think inside Drupal? Asumming I am writing some user-oriented module like Shop, Catalog or Forum. As far as I understand there are no or few MVC based modules. Should I generally treat Drupal modules (as sub-application) as a number of screens connected via forms and hyperlinks or there is a better way. • How to make an Android UI with images from a designer delivered as layers

  I hired a designer to help me redesign the UI for my Android app. For each Activity he gave me an image for the background, which includes any static content like fancy frames for text content; plus images for the buttons, which must fit in to the background image in exact places, to fit into the frames in the background image. However, since Android devices have different screen sizes and aspect ratios, it's easy to fit the background image by itself with android:scaleType="centerInside", but how can I get all the other images to fit in with background exactly, to the pixel? If they didn't have to fit in with the background, I would just set the exact width and height for each ImageButton, but depending on how the background scales (based on the screen size and ratio) they might end up not aligned correctly. However, since the algorithm to create GUIDs was changed apparently, I found it hard to get my hands on any up-to-date information. The MSDN seems to try and provide as few information as possible. What is known about how GUIDs are generated in .NET 4? What was changed, and how does it affect the security ("randomness") and integrity ("uniqueness")? One specific aspect I'm interested in: In v1, it seems to be about impossible to generate the same GUID on a single machine again since there was a timestamp and counter involved. In v4, this is no longer the case (I was told), so the chance to get the same GUID on a single machine ... increased?

Tables consist of: Table Movies ID Name Year Rating Runtime Table Con_MoviesToGenres MovieID GenreID Table Con_MovieToUser MovieID UserID Grade I'm trying to build a SELECT query to return 5 most recommended movies for a specific movie. Bearing in mind, I want to integrate in some way, similar genres, highest grades & movie Rating (so you want be recommended an R rated movie for a PG rated movie, unless it's really recommended in every other aspect). Also, if movie matches more than one genre, it will increase its recommendation ratio. Bonus: If a user gives a low grade to a movie - it will lose recommendation ratio.

  Hi Folks, Im just getting my head round C#. I've been creating classes and objects so say i created a class called Member: public class Member { public int MemberID; public string FirstName; public string LastName; public string UserName; } and i create a new object of that class by doing this: Member Billy = new Member(); Billy.UserName = "Jonesy"; Billy.FirstName = "Billy"; Billy.LastName = "Jones"; Thats all fine but what if I've queried a database and gotten back 5 members, can I create objects on the fly? Or what is the best way to store these members in memory? I've used VB.Net where I would just add them into a datatable. But I've never really done any object-oriented programming before and thought since I'm learning C sharp nows the best time to learn OOP.. Any help most appreciated! Jonesy

• Apple documentation incorrect about MKMapView -regionThatFits: ?

  In the Apple documentation for the -regionThatFits: method of the MKMapView, it says that this will return a new region centered on the same point as the region that's passed in, only with the regions bounds corrected for the iPhone screen aspect ratio. This seems to be incorrect in implementation...before the call to this method, my region shows up as: $5 = { center = { latitude = 37.322898864746094, longitude = -122.03209686279297 }, span = { latitudeDelta = 14.278411865234375, longitudeDelta = 1.5202401876449585 } } ..however, after the call to this method, I end up with: $6 = { center = { latitude = 36.973427342552824, longitude = -122.03209686279297 }, span = { latitudeDelta = 14.521333317196799, longitudeDelta = 14.0625 } } This is quite a big difference on the map - this translates to the distance between Cupertino, CA and Santa Cruz, CA. Anyone else experience this discrepancy?

  Hello! [I am rather new to Java and Object Oriented programming] I have an abstract class Moveable with the method abstract void move() which is extended by the class Bullet and the abstract class Character, and Character is extended by the class Survivor and the class Zombie. In Survivor and Bullet the move() method doesnt require any parameters while in the class Zombie the move() method depends on the actual position of the survivor. The survivor and multiple zombies are created in the class Gui. I wanted to access the survivor in Zombie - what's the best way of doing this? In Gui i wrote a method getSurvivor() but i don't see how to access this method in Zombie? I am aware that as a workaround i could just pass a [Survivor survivor] as parameter in move() and ignore it in Bullet and Survivor, but that feels so ... bad practice. Thank you for your time!   Hello, At moment my main layout consists of vertically oriented stack panel and it looks like this: Root StackPanel StackPanel - fixed Height 150 (horizontal orientation) StackPanel - relative Height must be behalf of free space left on screen (but at least 150 px). Used by Telerik GridView Control, if I don't specify Height or MaxHeight Telerik GridView Height becomes very large and does not fit my window. StackPanel - fixed Height 100 (horizontal orientation) StackPanel - relative Height must be half of free space left on screen (but at least 150 px). Used by Telerik GridView Control, if I don't specify Height or MaxHeight Telerik GridView Height becomes very large and does not fit my window. The problem is that I don't understand how to make certain areas of my view resize depending on available screen size. Is there is easy way to solve it, or should I be binding to Window height property and doing math? Thank You very much!

• Junit vs TestNG

  At work we are currently still using Junit3 to run our tests. We have been considering switching over to Junit4 for new tests being written but I have been keeping an eye on TestNG for a while now. What experiences have you all had with either Junit4 or TestNG and which seems to work better for very large numbers of tests. Having flexibility in writing tests is also important to us since our functional tests cover a wide aspect and need to be written in a variety of ways to get results. Old tests will not be re-written as they do their job just fine. What I would like to see in new tests though is flexibility in the way the test can be written, natural assertions, grouping, and easily distributed test executions.
