• Trouble with Libreoffice 4.0.* in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have used Libreoffice Impress to give presentations at meetings for some time now. The current version of Libreoffice in Ubuntu 12.04 is 3.5.7.2 and this works fine for me. Recently, following a recommendation from a colleague, I installed Libreoffice 4.0.something using the Libreoffice PPA. This worked, but I discovered when going into slide show mode most of the graphics (line graphs) disappeared, even though they were perfectly visible in the original. Lettering, drawings, and pictures came over, but not the line graphs (which were originally inserted in .eps format most likely). With some effort I managed to uninstall the more recent version of Libreoffice, and reinstall the version in the Ubuntu repositories (3.5.7.2) and the graphs now appear as expected in the slide show mode. Is there any explanation for this behaviour?

• I need a multi-language site with webshop functionality. Which CMS to choose?

  I need to develop a multi-language site which includes simple webshop functionality. I have extended experience with WordPress. There are numerous shopping cart plugins available for WordPress however none of them is compatible with multi-language plugins such as WMPL. Drupal is an option I looked into (using i18n and Ubercart) and I am not sure this is the solution I am looking for. Another solution I considered is to develop a custom WordPress cart plugin that is compatible with WPML. Anyone familiar with this situation? Any recommendation regarding CMSes that fit my needs? • Which iso image do I need to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a Macbook Pro so that it boots using UEFI?

  Unlike with earlier releases, the website is unclear on giving a straight recommendation for installing ubuntu on a mac: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ I've read several times, that I should use an alternative image. But this is only offered as 64-bit. However, I'm also told to rather use 32-bit images for better software compability. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64+mac.iso Even though I should only use alternative images, there is offered a standard desktop image which is "adjusted to work properly on Mac systems". http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso Question Which image should I take? Do both of these images offer UEFI boot? I've tried both of them already, but both have setup an install with BIOS emulation. This is quite annoying because of the short battery life and high temperatures which are harmful to battery longevity.

  The number of URLs on my website is constantly growing (by 10-50 per week or so). Should I Regularly submit an updated sitemap including all URLs. Have a sitemap of only the static content of my website. Have some tool which automatically creates sitemaps on any changes. As for 3) is googlesitemapgenerator useful in this respect? I am a bit anxious allowing a beta product mess with my apache. Is anybody using it or has another recommendation of similar tools?

  Hi... Two questions: Is there a simple way to do the Curl page flipping animation? A Curl animation is animation of pages flipping, including the page above rolling and the shadows over the lower page. What is the recommended way to do a "gallery" that displays two pages at a time (just like a book)? Is it: Letting the adapter display a linear layout of two images at a time? (it won't let me show a page flipping over the other like a book) Using two pages, placing somehow one near the other, and then when it's time to animate -move the next two pages over?   Hello, I've got about three years c# experience. I'd like to learn some WPF and the MVVM pattern. There are a lot of links to articles on this site but I'm getting a little overwhelmed. Would a sensible approach for a begginer to be forget mvvm for a while and just quickly learn a bit a of WPF, then come back to MVVM? I had a leaf through this book in work today, it doesn't seem to mention MVVM (at least not in the index). I was pretty surprised by this as I thought MVVM was supposed to be the "lingua franca" of WPF? Also I've just started working at a new company and they are using MVVM with WinForms, has anyone come across this before? Can anyone recommend a book that will teach me both WPF and MVVM?

  I'm reading a book that recommends clicking a check box that says "Place code in separate file" when adding a new Web Form to an existing ASP.NET project. The book is using Visual Studio 2005 and there is a check box for "Place code in separate file" when you open the "Add New Item" dialog. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and I do not see the "Place code in separate file" checkbox when I try to add a new item. Is there something I need to do to enable this? Was this functionality no longer possible/important in VS 2008?

  Should journal entries be recorded in a database design? In the real world it makes sense to keep a daily entry book, then later transfer the daily entry book into double entry accounts. but in the computerized version, doing this produces duplicate records and that doesn't quite make sense? ???? What i mean is 1) user enter details , it gets recorded (this would be called the journalbook in real life) 2) the software does all the double entry accounting then references the journalbook and splits up the transaction into the double entry accounting system.

• Changes in gcc/persistence of optimization flags gcc/C

  Just curious. Using gcc/gdb under Ubuntu 9.10. Reading a C book that also often gives the disassembly of the object file. When reading in January, my disassembly looks a lot like the book's; now, it's quite different - possibly more optimized (I notice some re-arrangements in the assembly code now that, at least in the files I checked, look optimized). I have used optimization options -O1 - -O3 for gcc between the first and second read, but not before the first. (1) Is the use of optimization options persistent, aka, if you use them once, you'll use them until switching them off? That would be weird (browsed man file and at least did not see anything to that sort). In the unlikely case that it is true, how do you switch them off? (2) Has gcc's assembly changed through any recent upgrade? (3) Does gcc sometimes produce (significantly) different assembly code although same compile options are chosen? Thanks much.

  Hi, I'm trying to follow Marcus Zarra in his book 'Core Data'. In the book, he makes a small sample application, but it doesn't give much help when things don't work out... He starts out by visually designing three entities, and then adding array controllers for each entity to the main nib. Second, he adds a tableview and some other visual components to show data from the array controllers. So far, I have managed to follow, but now he adds a search field to the gui, and binds it to the same array controller as one of the tableviews. Expected behavior would be for the tableview to get filtered when typing in the search field, but nothing happens. How do I find out what's wrong? The relevant parts from the nib is as follow: NSArrayController Recipes - Mode = Entity - Enitity Name = Recipe TableView w/TableColumn - Value Bind To Recipes -- Controller Key = arrangedObjects -- Model Key Path = name Search Field - Predicate Bind To Recipes -- Controller Key = filterPredicate -- Model Key Path = name -- Display name = predicate -- Predicate Format = keyPath contains $value There are no relevant messages in the console. regards, -Vegar

• A strong case for WF

  Hi guys, I have struggled for so long to find a compelling use case for workflow (ie: WF) as against regular imperative programming. Each time I fall back to the conclusion that I should just leave WF out or defer getting into it until later. But I keep having this nagging feeling that there's something am missing. Does anyone know any book that truly makes a strong case for the Workflow way? The book has to (i) teach WF well, and (ii) show using appropriate use cases that WF made an implementation easy to do than if we just did our regular straight coding. I will appreciate it.

• iPhone NSXMLParser parsing string and storing in a NSNumber variable and different data types

  Hi, I am trying to parse a XML File using NSXMLParser, I also have a Container class, in which I have a few instance variables. One of the elements that I am trying to parse in the XML is: <book sn="32.859669048339128" pn="-116.917800670489670"> I am trying to save the value of sn and pn in an instance variable of object Container: NSNumber *sn, NSNumber *pn. I want it so that when my parser get the attributeValues it can save it as a Double (or float) in those NSNumber pointers. Right now, all it does it just saves a string to the NSNumber. The Parser Code looks like this: if([elementName isEqualToString:@"book"]){ container = [[Container alloc] init]; container.sn=[attributeDict objectForKey:@"sn"]; container.pn=[attributeDict objectForKey:@"pn"]; } I want it so that the type of container.sn is initialized to a float or double. • Using Struts with SpringSource dm server gives Http Status 503 error

  Hi, I developed an enterprise application using spring, struts and hibernate, now I want to transfer it to work with OSGi dm server. I found a book "Pro SpringSource dm server" where the author has explained a way to migrate WAR to OSGi bundles. I successfully migrated the application given in book. The first step of migration says that remove the lib folder in WEB-INF directory and import all the relevant packages. I did the same. Application has been successfully deployed in the dm server. But when I tried to connect to URL it is giving me the error: SpringSource dm Server - Error report HTTP Status 503 - Servlet action is currently unavailable type: Status report message: Servlet action is currently unavailable description: The requested service (Servlet action is currently unavailable) is not currently available. What could be the reason for this? I am out of clues to solve this issue. Can you pass any help you may have. Thanks in anvance.

• Visual Web Developer 2008 Express and XHTML 1.1 (not applying)

  Hello. I may be missing something since I'm not used to work with IDEs for web development, so please understand if I'm doing something stupid. I've picked a copy of Beginning ASP.NET 3.5 in C# and VB to try and learn this thing quickly. I'm no HTML guru, but I know something about the DTDs and I want to either use XHTML 1.0 Strict or XHTML 1.1 while learning the ins and outs of ASP.NET. Following the book (just started actually), I'm not having any trouble understanding the concepts, since I have a C# background, but what I don't understand is how VWD goes about applying the schema you select for validation. The book explains that the drop-down list on the toolbar is enough to set this, so that's what I did: I've selected XHTML 1.1 (since there is no 1.0 strict option, what I find really odd) and then started the project. The thing is that the code generated automatically for the Default page had the XHTML 1.0 transitional DTD. Every other page added had the same DTD, even though XHTML 1.1 is still the selected schema in the drop-down list. I decided to test it out and there it was: inserting some text in the design view and then applying a bold formatting just inserted < b tags on the code. Changing color does add a span tag with added CSS though. What I want to know is: if I want strict XHTML (or 1.1) should I just code it manually? Or is there a "fix" for this problem (having a schema selected but not applied by the IDE)? Am I missing something really easy and dumb? I have no problem with coding it manually - I actually prefer doing that. The thing is that I really wanna try this WYSIWYG approach for once, since some developers swear by it. Plus I don't know yet if I'll need special tags for ASP.NET, so I think having them inserted automatically should be the best practice. I couldn't find any similar problems around (MSDN, Google, here), and as far as the book goes (up to the point I've read), this is the expected VWD behavior, which I find suspect at least.   Hi, what is the best resource (book would be nice) to learn sh scripting (the "standard" shell on Unix systems) just like when i would learn a "normal" programming/scripting language ? There are lots of tutorials on certain aspects of shell scripting, they mostly deal with shells in general and unix commands and so on, but i would rather like to find a more general approach - meaning a quick syntactic overview and an outlook on how to do things you normally do when programming, like implementing small algorithms and so on. Doing actual scripting, not just a structured batch file. And rather 100-liners than 1-to-3-liners. Can you recommend a good standard book on the topic ?

  Hello, I'm currently getting to know Java and OSGi, so I've read a few books. In one particular book the class loading is described. You can download it (free and legal) from the authors page (Neil Bartlett): OSGi Book On page 9 and 10 are this pictures: It seems like there is the possibility that our class "Foo" won't use the class "Bar" of foobar.jar, but instead class "Bar" from naughty.jar. Because of the flat and global structure of the Java classpath this could be, but as far as I know you would define a package from where you want to import a certain class: import foobar.Bar This should prevent loading the wrong class, shouldn't it? Of course assuming that the package is called "foobar".
