  Hello, I have a PHP script that has a runtime of 34 seconds. But it dies after 30 seconds. I guess my webhost a time limit of 30 seconds. I am thinking of splitting the script into two parts say PHP-1 and PHP-2. Can I call PHP-2 from PHP-1 and kill PHP-1? Both scripts have to run in sequence, so calling both of them using cron is not possible. [ My host provides cron with interval 5 mins and does not allow to change the start time] -Will this circumvent the time limit set by host?

  Hi all, In Classic ASP, shouldn't a subroutine in global.asa be available to all .asp pages in the session? For some reason I am having trouble calling the sub. Before I look at whether something specific to my application is causing the problem I wanted to make sure I understood properly. global.asa: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="VBScript" RUNAT="Server"> sub foo session("foo") = true end sub </SCRIPT> myinclude.inc, included in all pages: call foo I get 'Type Mismatch' runtime error referencing foo. Am I totally misunderstanding this?

• Can I make ungetc unblock a blocking fgetc call?

  I would like to stuff an 'A' character back into stdin using ungetc on receipt of SIGUSR1. Imagine that I have a good reason for doing this. When calling foo(), the blocking read in stdin is not interrupted by the ungetc call on receipt of the signal. While I didn't expect this to work as is, I wonder if there is a way to achieve this - does anyone have suggestions? void handler (int sig) { ungetc ('A', stdin); } void foo () { signal (SIGUSR1, handler); while ((key = fgetc (stdin)) != EOF) { ... } }

That is, it returns function() { return parseInt(this.gup('page')); } I was expecting a numeric value and not any code at all.

• Why is it not possible to call RegFree COM and .NET from the VB IDE (VB6 & VBA)?

  Hi I have an example project with works when called from compiled VB6 but not from the IDE or from Excel's VBE. There are 3 DLLs QA.DLL, QB.DLL, QAW.DLL. QA is written in C#.NET, QB and QAW are written in VB6. QAW is a COM wrapper of QA. In the calling code I create an Activation Context and load a manifest file. All works fine from the exe created with VB6, but not in debug mode in VB6 or in Excel's VBA. I have the full example in zip. Any ideas what it is that is different about the IDE call and why it doesn't work? Many Thx -- DM

  This is a language-agnostic question - unless you count English as a language. I've got this list of items which can have very long names. For aesthetic purposes, these names must be made shorter in some cases, adding dots (...) to indicate that the name is longer. So for example, if article.name returns this: lorem ipsum dolor sit amet I'd like to get this other output. lorem ipsum dolor ... I can program this quite easily. My question is: how should I call that shortening operation? I mean the name, not the implementation. Is there a standard English name for it?

  Hi, I have a MVC app that has forms authentication enabled. The app allows printing of invoices. I have an external app that converts html to pdf. How can I call the secured page from this pdf converter app so that some security remains? The PDF converter app just requires a URL. One thought was to create a HttpHandler for an extenion of say .print and pass a public key in the URL qureystring that can be validated by the MVC app. Any ideas on this? Malcolm

  Hey guys, my doubt is pretty simple to understand. I have a sql procedure that generates a util file as its output depending on the input parameters that are passed to it. I have to pass these parameters from an html page from 3 text boxes.There will also be a button ,on clicking which, the procedure will be called and the util will be generated. I thought of doing it in jsp and writing the full procedure there itself. But i want to util file to opened in WORD the moment it is generated.   I have Angle class that I want initialized to a random value. The Angle constructor can accept an int from a random() function. Is it safe to place this call in the ctor list: foo::foo() : Angle(random(0xFFFF)) {...} or do I have to do it in the body of the constructor? foo::foo() { Angle = Angle(random(0xFFFF)); ...} If it matters, the foo class is derived from another class and does have virtual methods. In addition, no exception handling is allowed in our app.

In there, I am using modal popup extender to get some information from the user and then i verify the address through google and suggests the proper format.   When a user clicks once on an item in a Grid or a ListBox, that item is usually selected, hence most UI frameworks have a onSelected event or the like for that. However, how can we generally call the next step when a user "finally" selects an item by e.g. double clicking an entry? You know when some popup might appear in the context of the selected item and the user can do further stuff. Strangely enough, I think I have never seen a word for that in any UI framework. onPicked, onAccepted, onChosen, onFinallySelected, onResult? All kinda awkward or too special. Any other ideas?

• Remote Ajax Call in jQuery .click() function doesn't finish before going to next page.

  I need to send click information on my website to a third party server using ajax (json). I am using jquery and I added the click event to certain links. In the click event I am making a json request to a remote server with the location of the click (heat map) and some other information. The problem is that the ajax function doesn't fire in time before the default link action happens. Setting async to false doesn't seem to work on remote ajax calls. I have tried preventDefault(), but then I don't know how to run the default action after the successful ajax call.   Hi All, I am developing a web-app where I want to provide a download link to users - so they can download a zip file from my server. Now, my requirement is that I want to execute some processing logic contained in a servlet before displaying the file dialog to the user for 'zip' files. So If I write <a href="abc.zip".......> then it opens a file dialog asking the user to select the location where this file can be saved But if I want a servlet's doGet method to do some preprocessing - say like building the zip file , then how can I first call the servlet and then open the file dialog.   Hi, What I wish to achieve is - log all information about each and every visit to every page ofmy website (like ip address, browser, referring page, etc). Now this is easy to do. What I am interested is doing this in a way so as to cause minimum overhead (runtime) in the php scripts. What is the best approach for this efficiency-wise: 1) Log all information to a database table 2) Write to a file (from php directly) 3) Call a C++ executable, that will write this info to a file in parallel [so the script can continue execution without waiting for the file write to occur ...... is this even possible] I may be trying to optimize unnecessarily/prematurely, but still - any thoughts / ideas on this would be appreciated. (I think efficiency of file write/logging can really be a concern if I have say 100 visits per minute...) Thanks & Regards, JP

• Java: How to test methods that call System.exit()?

  I've got a few methods that should call System.exit() on certain inputs. Unfortunately, testing these cases causes JUnit to terminate! Putting the method calls in a new Thread doesn't seem to help, since System.exit() terminates the JVM, not just the current thread. Are there any common patterns for dealing with this? For example, can I subsitute a stub for System.exit()? [EDIT] The class in question is actually a command-line tool which I'm attempting to test inside JUnit. Maybe JUnit is simply not the right tool for the job? Suggestions for complementary regression testing tools are welcome (preferably something that integrates well with JUnit and EclEmma).

  I have an executable (fossil scm) that is being invoked by my program externally through ::CreateProcess windows call. The stdout and stderr are then captured. Since the source code for fossil is available, I would prefer to create a static library out of it and issue calls directly. Currently, communication to fossil is done through the command line parameters, and the communication back is through the process return code, stdout and stderr. Fossil writes to stdout/err through printf and fprintf calls. What is the best way to solve this with minimum alteration of fossil source? Is there a reliable and cross-platform way to intercept stdout/err and send it into a memory buffer?
