  I am Curious about how cross domain authentication work? for example. To sign into Orkut.com you need to to sign in via Google.com. So the authentication happens at Google.com and it sets the cookie. So my question now is how does Orkut.com able to read this cookie or authenticate the user with no other information ? • Random RAM usage amounts

  I was hoping someone could explain why my application when loaded uses varying amounts of RAM. I'm speaking about a compiled version that uses the exe directly. It's a pretty basic applications and there are no conditional branches in the startup of the application. Yet every time I start it up the RAM amount varies from 6MB-16MB. I know it's on the small end of usage anyways but I'm curious of why this happens.

• Basic visual studio intellisense question

  Ive used visual studio for years, but the answer this eludes me: When intellisense pops up, for a method call that takes more than one parameter, the summary for the first parameter is shown. The only way i've found to show the summary for the following parameter(s) is to either supply each parameter or just hit comma until i get the one im looking for. Ive tried ctrl+right arrow, shift + right arrow etc etc, without success. Just curious is all.

• Is it best to code from a blank sheet or improving a code that's already written?

  Just had a curious thought, but for general coding and programming, do you think it's best to work out all the logic yourself and start from a blank sheet or just take a code that has been written already(by you or someone else) and just change it to your liking? Assuming you have a programming background of like 1year+. (because as a beginner, it's best to learn from nothing) I'm not saying copy+paste someone else's code and say it's yours.

• When using emacs do you rebind caps-lock to CTRL?

  This question is, as indicated, for those who use Emacs. When you do, do you rebind the caps-lock key to CTRL, or do you use the "normal" ctrl key? I've recently learned some Emacs commands and was using the Visual Studio 2008 emacs commands for a while, and of course I used a caps-rebind tool, but I'm curious how many other people do. On a side note, the emacs bindings for VS are severely incomplete :(

  This is strange: DateList@AbsoluteTime[596523] returns {2078, 7, 2, 2, 42, 9.7849} But DateList@AbsoluteTime[596524] returns {1942, 5, 26, 20, 28, 39.5596} The question: What's going on? Note that AbsoluteTime with an integer argument is undocumented. (I think I now know what it's doing but figured this is useful to have as a StackOverflow question for future reference; and I'm curious if there's some reason for that magic 596523 number.)

  Given a 1*N matrix or an array, how do I find the first 4 elements which have the same value and then store the index for those elements? PS: I'm just curious. What if we want to find the first 4 elements whose value differences are within a certain range, say below 2? For example, M=[10,15,14.5,9,15.1,8.5,15.5,9.5], the elements I'm looking for will be 15,14.5,15.1,15.5 and the indices will be 2,3,5,7.

  From the number of questions posted here, it's clear that people have some pretty fundemental issues when getting their heads around pointers and pointer arithmetic. I'm curious to know why. They've never really caused me major problems (although I first learned about them back in the Neolithic). In order to write better answers to these questions, I'd like to know what people find difficult. In such manner that you can compile your interactive application in test-mode and then be able to click on elements which then passed the action to Selenium IDE which then adds this command to the testcase. For example, like this: type my_type = int; // or string, or Foo, or any other type void* data = ...; my_type* a = (my_type*) data; I know that 99.9% of the time there's a better way to do what you want without resorting to casting void pointers, but I'm curious if C++ allows this sort of thing.

  Does the original data type of the username string in a call to FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(...) make any difference with regards to security or code maintainability? As I understand it, the cookie is encrypted and used to identify a user on each request. I'm curious whether it should affect the design of the primary key on my Users table in my database, eg. Guid vs int or a unique username string.
