• Network Management Cable Labeling Techniques and their alternatives [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the most effective solution you used to label cables? Yes i know there are a lot of howtos and already answered questions about this topic, like this one: How do you organise the cables in your racks? Currently i am searching the web for different techniques (alternatives) for labeling the cables at the server racks and/or data centers. Unfortunately i do not have any experience with labeling/documentation of network cables in a large scale. As far as I could lookup by now the current labeling techniques are coloring and a self defined print-labeling technique (numbering, text) maybe also according to a standard which are usually used. I want to know if QR, RFID (ok RFID in a data center would be stupid due to the radio frequency wouldn't it be?), Barcodes or similar (??) have already been used by some administrators or why they did not consider such techniques at all? Too complicated (with QR scanner etc..) if you are in front of the cables and want to get quick feedback for what the cable is? What alternatives are out there? Advantages/Disadvantages? • Starting point for learning CAD/CAE file formats?

  We are developing some stress and strain analysis software at university. Now it's time to move from rectangles and boxes and spheres to some real models. But I still have little idea where to start. In our software we are going to build mesh and then make calculations, but how do I import solid bodies from CAD/CAE software? 1) How CAD/CAE models are organised? How solid bodies are represented? What are the possibilities of DWG, DXF, IGES, STEP formats? There is e.g. a complete DXF reference, but it's too difficult for me to understand without knowing basic concepts. 2) Are there C++ libraries to import solid bodies from CAD/CAE file formats? Won't it be too difficult to build a complete model to be able to import comprehensive file?

• Finding a backup and synchronization solution

  I'm having difficulties to find a backup and synchronization solution with the following characteristics: Cross-platform: Windows, Linux, Mac Offsite backup (so Internet Backup) Data deduplication Transfer only new/modified bits of modified files Secure: Data encrypted before leaving computer Maintain multiple versions of files (even deleted files) Folder synchronization integrated with backup and across multiple computers connected to the internet (not necessarily in the same LAN) I think that the Folder Sync feature needs a better explanation. The use case is this: you have a desktop pc and a laptop. The desktop pc contains a folder with some files and this folder is part of the backup (so it was selected to be backed up). The laptop does not contain that folder or that files at all. Then you're abroad with your laptop and you need that folder. So you want to be able to open the backup program, select that folder from the backup and download it in your laptop mantaining it synchronized with the backed up version. When you then come back home and switch on your desktop pc you want the folder we're talking about to be updated in the desktop PC. Does anyone knows any service with all these features? I've only found SpiderOak to support all the features I've mentioned but I'm not completely satisfied by the time taken to complete a backup. Sometimes it seems to hang for minutes with no reasons at all and folder synchronization occurs only after all files are backed up (instead folder sync should have a separated queue independent from other backup operations and synchronization should occurs frequently... for example every 5 minutes or less, independently from the frequency of normal backup operations)

Some assumptions: • code control version ok - git (de facto tool) • test framework ok - whatever (rspec is my choice) • code coverage and analysis ok - whatever (metric-fu, for example) • server stack ok - (Passenger for example) • issue tracker (RedMine) • etc, ... • Problem with wireless networking

  Hello, I have atheros wifi hardware, intell chipset, gigabyte laptop and CentOS 5 installed. Now I try to use wireless network and get problems. First of all I want to say that I have 2 OS on my laptop, and when I load Windows XP I still may to access to the wireless network. First I try to get it on Linux was to make active wlan0 interface in: system - administration - network but I get: Determining IP information for wlan0... failed. • laptop headphone jack problems

  A while back my headphones mysteriously started making static noise and one of them stopped working completely. At first I thought it was headphones so I bought new ones. Alas that did not solve the problem. The problem must be inside my headphone jack. I did some research online and they suggested unplugging USB devices. Which has a strange effect of changing the static noises to high frequency Morse code noises (it's the aliens). I don't have this problem when i listen to music on speakers. The static is there on headphones whether there is music or not. I own a soldering iron for electronics and I am quite skilled at soldering. I would appreciate any help I can get. My laptop is the HDX 18. It has 2 headphone jacks that act exactly the same. Interesting thing i just noticed is that when i pull out my headphones almost all the way both of them start working but so do the speakers making the headphones kinda useless. Maybe there is a way to turn of the speakers as a temporary solution. I am using vista x64.

• Boot loop that I cannot bypass

  Recently, on a laptop that I've used for a while, I had a strange issue where OS files were corrupted (device manager) and Windows 8 was hung after the login screen, so I reinstalled Windows 7 over the existing Windows 8 installation, and it worked for a couple days. Today, when I tried to use my laptop, it was stuck on a boot loop. Right after the BIOS screen, it would show a flashing underscore, then restart the computer, again and again until I removed the battery. I tried booting to a windows 7 install CD, but the same flashing underscore - reboot sequence happened when I tried. I tried moving the boot priority around (HDD first, CD/DVD first, even USB first) but nothing changed. After about an hour of tinkering with it, I listened to the HDD sounds, and it sounded like the HDD was trying to spin up, but failing (whining noise increasing in frequency that stopped and started in sync with the system restarting). I am planning to replace the HDD, but I'm still confused as to why a faulty HDD would stop the laptop from booting to my install DVD (tried it on a different computer, it booted from that CD fine). Anybody here have any idea why this might be happening?

• Appserver runs out of memory

  We have been facing Out of Memory errors in our App server for sometime. We see the used heap size increasing gradually until finally it reaches the available heap in size. This happens every 3 weeks after which a server restart is needed to fix this. Upon analysis of the heap dumps we find the problem to be objects used in JSPs. Can JSP objects be the real cause of Appserver memory issues? How do we free up JSP objects (Objects which are being instantiated using usebean or other tags)? We have a clustered Websphere appserver with 2 nodes and an IHS.

• What technical skills needed for algorithmic trading, HFT, etc?

  I'm interested in getting into developing trading systems, black box, HFT, etc. My primary experience is with C# and .Net (7 years). I've also done some sockets programming. I have some experience in finance working on analysis applications (2 years). My goal is to move into developing automated trading systems for a hedge fund, bank, etc. Is there any way to learn the skills needed for this without somehow getting the job first? I've looked at the open source tradelink, IB interactive brokerage, etc. I'm playing around with this framework, and may hook it up and do some paper trading. However, I'm not sure if this has much relationship with how a well-funded entity would be conducting a high-level automated trading operation. I.e. would the tools and frameworks they prefer be a totally different skill-set? Also wondering if I need to learn C++ and/or Java for these types of apps.

• Communicating with the PC via USB connection in Android

  I'm fairly new to android programming and need some information for a 4th year forensics course project. Basically I am trying to create a suite of tools for live analysis of an android phone. I know how to get the information I need on the phone, but I was wondering if there was a way to communicate that information back to the PC? I want to be able to run a program from a PC, which, when the phone is docked, will allow the user to access information about the phone (ie currently running services/processes, bluetooth/wifi connections, etc). I have a bunch of methods that will run on the phone and get all the information, but I want to be able to call those methods from the PC, execute on the phone, then have the information sent back to the PC to display to the user instead of just displaying it on the phone. • What's the best way to explain parsing to a new programmer?

  I am a college student getting my Computer Science degree. A lot of my fellow students really haven't done a lot of programming. They've done their class assignments, but let's be honest here those questions don't really teach you how to program. I have had several other students ask me questions about how to parse things, and I'm never quite sure how to explain it to them. Is it best to start just going line by line looking for substrings, or just give them the more complicated lecture about using proper lexical analysis, etc. to create tokens, use BNF, and all of that other stuff? They never quite understand it when I try to explain it. What's the best approach to explain this without confusing them or discouraging them from actually trying.

• Running the LibreOffice MSI installer in English

  I'm trying to install LibreOffice on a machine running a Korean version of Windows XP. I don't know Korean. I haven't used Windows with any frequency in many years, so I'm pretty lost. When I run the installer, it shows up in Korean. But, I want to customize the installation, so I need the installer to be in English. Googling took me to this page, where I found an example command to run the installer in Gaelic, which I modified for my system as follows: msiexec /i LibO_3.6.1_Win_x86_install_multi.msi TRANSFORMS=:1084 This works, except that I know less about Gaelic than I do about Korean. The help page provided a link to a page where I could look up the ID codes. From that page, I determined that the correct code was 1033 for US English and 2057 for UK English. When I substituted the code, I got an error message. Here's the messages as translated by Google, followed by the original: Transform can not be applied.Verify that the specified transform paths are valid. ?? ??? ??? ? ????. ??? ?? ??? ???? ?????. I can't very well search on a machine translation, so I don't know where to go from here.What is the problem? How can I make the installer operate in English? Alternatively, how can I change XP to display its interface in English, while keeping full functionality for typing in Korean?

• Officially announced RAM support size doesn't apply to one of twin rigs with just one difference

  It'll take a little long to describe my situation but here goes the story : In January 2009 we bought (the OEM parts) two similar systems with just one difference. One of them had a Phenom X4 cpu and the other one (mine) a Phenom X3 cpu. At the beginning we had problems with both systems to power them on whilst having all of their ram slots being full. We decided to install the systems with just 2 slots populated and later try to install the rest of ram sticks. Both systems did succeed to support 3 sticks. We tried many different procedures to make the systems work with their fourth ram slots being populated. We waited for new bios updates and flashed the boards when they were available, we tried different ram sticks with different frequencies etc. One day while we were trying to install the fourth stick, the X4 machine did accept it. The other one did not. The most mind boggling thing was that after one of my trials the X3 system begun to not operate with the third slot populated. Our boards did have AMD 770 chipsets and we even tried to change the board of the X3 machine with another 770 chipset board. Now my questions are : Should we change the cpu ? What is causing the X3 system to not accept the fourth (or now the third) ram stick ? The manufacturers sites do claim that this boards do accept 4 ram sticks (but they only tested them with certain ram brands and models). What are the limitations for maximum ram configurations on motherboards ? Are there some "rules of thumb" except frequency, voltage, chip type considerations for which we did check our parts ?   Hi all, if you wanted to manipulate the data in a table in a postgresql database using some python (maybe running a little analysis on the result set using scipy) and then wanted to export that data back into another table in the same database, how would you go about the implementation? Is the only/best way to do this to simply run the query, have python store it in an array, manipulate the array in python and then run another sql statement to output to the database? • Creating a specialised view filtering form in Rails

  G'day guys, I have a current set of data, and I generate multiple analyses of this data (each analysis into its own active record item called a pricing_interval) using a helper function at the moment. Currently to analyse the set of data, you need a start time(using datetime_select) an integer (using text_field) and a name (using text_field) I would like on submission of the form to be redirected to the index page of my pricing_interval, as the values will be re-generated. Manually generating a range proves that my helper methods work. How would I build a form that on submit would send parameters to a function in the form of (date,integer,name) so that it could immediately begin work whilst redirecting the user to server/pricing_intervals Anything at all would help, I've spent hours over the past few days trying to get the rails form syntax working properly to no avail, a really straightforward guide to what I would implement to get this working would be amazingly appreciated. I've looked through the form guides, as I'm not creating an object, but merely parsing params, there's got to be an easy way to do this, right?

  This is mostly a data warehouse philosophy question. My project involves an Oracle forms application, and a Teradata Data Warehouse for reporting and ad-hoc purposes. In addition to the primary data created by the users of our application, we also require data from various other sources. Currently, this 3rd party data comes via FTPd flat files directly to our Data Warehouse. To access the data, our users must use a series of custom BusinessObjects reports. My question is, would it make more sense for this data to be sent to our source Oracle system instead? Is it ever appropriate for a Data Warehouse to be the point of origin for users to access raw data? In short, is it more important that the operational database contain only the data created by your project, or that the data warehouse remain dedicated solely to reporting and analysis?

• MVC2: Best Way to Intercept ViewRequest and Alter ActionResult

  I'm building an ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application that requires some sophisticated authentication and business logic that cannot be achieved using the out of the box forms authentication. I'm new to MVC so bear with me... My plan was to mark all restricted View methods with one or more custom attributes (that contain additional data). The controller would then override the OnActionExecuting method to intercept requests, analyze the target view's attributes, and do a variety of different things, including re-routing the user to different places. I have the interception and attribute analysis working, but the redirection is not working as expected. I have tried setting the ActionExecutingContext.Result to null and even have tried spooling up controllers via reflection and invoking their action methods. No dice. Which program is the "best", where best is some combination of easiest to use, best prior estimation, fast How do I incorporate my intuitions about topicality. Let's say I think I know that some items in the corpus are really in the same category, like all articles by the same author. Can I add that into the analysis? • Analysing a Visual Foxpro application to derive requirements. Tools/approaches/practices?

  Hello. In an upcoming project I am supposed to re-engineer a huge application built on Visual Foxpro into a web-application. The target platform is .Net. The application from the end-users' perspective is very complex (complex forms, reports, navigation, etc). The sorry state is that there are no documents available from which I can derive, business processes, business rules, work-flows, validations, application state, etc. I can gather some requirements from end-users but it cannot be complete from any perspective. Maneuvering through the code would be tedious & time consuming, given the millions of lines of code. Therefore I am looking for a tool that can help me in code analysis. My googling attempt didn't help me at least for a Visual Foxpro code base. Besides, I will appreciate if someone can share processes/approaches/techniques to establish the requirements as far as possible. BTW, this link didn't quite help.

  I am running Request Tracker 4 on a Debian Squeeze Server. I have to implement a priority escalation. Actually escalation is not the right term for this since the the ticket priority should be set linear via rt-crontool (or any other tool that can be run via a cronjob) dependent on the time that has been passed between the „Started“ and „Due“ to a number between 0 (starting priority) and the „Final Priority“ (eg. 100) while the value of the „Final Priority“ should be reached exactly the moment the „Due“-Date is passed. This already implies that the search condition should be all tickets of a certain queue that have „Started“ AND „Due“ AND „Final Priority“. The cronjob should be called very frequently for excample any 5 or 10 minutes so that the call should be indempotent and not depentent on the frequency of the rt-crontool invocations. One Example: A Ticket is Started at 2012-12-23 0am and Due is 2012-12-23 11.59pm while the Final Priority is 100. When the call is made at noon the priority should be set to 50. • Opencv python and webcam

  Hello, I'm working with OpenCV on a beagleboard with ubuntu and OpenCV 1.1 interfaced via Python. I'm trying to set something up to capture a feed from a UVC compatible webcam (logitech C250). I have tested the webcam with luvcview and it works but only if I set the input format to YUV. If I run it in 'normal' mode I am getting back jpeg frames and something - somewhere is not happy! I'm trying to connect with the webcam in OpenCV as I want to get the image back from the webcam and run some analysis on it. As I have a limited device this seems to be the most efficient way of doing it - however I need to instruct the capturing system to capture in YUV and not jpeg. Is there a way of doing this (for example luvcview allow me to enter luvcview -f YUVY)? Cheers, Neil

• Getting IIS Worker Process Crash dumps

  I'm doing something bad in my ASP.NET app. It could be the any number of CTP libraries I'm using or I'm just not disposing something properly. But when I redeploy my ASP.NET to my Vista IIS7 install or my server's IIS6 install I crash an IIS worker process. I've narrowed the problem down to my HTTP crawler, which is a multithreaded beast that crawls sites for useful information when asked to. After I start a crawler and redeploy the app over the top, rather than gracefully unloading the appDomain and reloading, an IIS worker process will crash (popping up a crash message) and continue reloading the app domain. When this crash happens, where can I find the crash dump for analysis?

After analysis over net I found that Jabber related client/ chat server application should be best according to my requirements. I have found that there are several jabber based client-server application but mostly written in java, C or C++. • Improving abysmal 802.11n wireless network

At best I get 30Mbs (this is an internet download) from a technology that boasts 300Mbs, even worse is the LAN where to date best i have ever gotten is 1Mbs. It is literally quicker to copy the file to a USB and walk it to the other computer.
