• NSFetchedResultsController not processing certain section driven moves

  I utilize a NSFetchedResultsController (frc) with a Core Data store. I implement all the frc delegate methods. The table is sporadically updated by background threads. All the inserts, deletes and updates work fine, with the exception that updates to the frc's index key for rows toward to the bottom of the table (50 rows), do not result in a section move. e.g. if "name" is the index key and the name "Victor" is changed to "Alex", the victor row now shows the name Alex, but is not moved to the top of the table alongside all other names starting with A. As I noted, this is only for rows towards the bottom of the table. If a row like "Andy" is changed to "Ben", the move is indeed processed correctly by the frc. Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated. I do not use a frc cache. Thanks

But if the thread is in a while loop, it will cause the heavy memory leak. As I use taskmanage I can see the memory is increasing. • Why doesn't the undo/redo panel appear when I start a shake gesture in iPhone Simulator?

  I've created an NSUndoManager for the Managed Object Context of Core Data, like this: NSUndoManager *undoManager = [[NSUndoManager alloc] init]; [undoManager setLevelsOfUndo:10]; [managedObjectContext setUndoManager:undoManager]; [undoManager release]; In the app delegate where the didFinishLaunching method is called, I did this: application.applicationSupportsShakeToEdit = YES; For some reason, I never get that undo/redo panel when I make a shake gesture in iPhone Simulator (from the menu). Must I enable undo/redo somewhere else, maybe in the Info.plist file?

  Hello everyone One of my project is to download several large size files using ASIHTTPRequest in asynchronous mode. I hope to read the http returned header info to get the size of files. I know [request respsonseHeaders] (requestFinished: delegate method ) can do that. I tested and found that requestFinished: is only triggered when it completed the download of a whole single file. But I hope to access the function [request respsonseHeaders] before ASIHTTPRequest starting to download files (just when ASIHTTPRequest got the returned header info). • How Do I create a synchronous version of NSURLConnection

  I am using NSURLConnection inside of an NSIncrementalStore to synchronize my NSManagedObject with rest based web service built in Rails. I am aware of +sendSynchronousRequest:returningResponse:error but my understanding is that will not allow me to access such things as the HTTP response status code which I will need to properly handle the response, my understanding is sendSynchronousRequest returns the data if it responds in the 200 range and fails if it doesn't and doesn't really give you much more than that. I'm assuming I will somehow have to block the current method call after the NSURLConnection is instantiated and unblock it after NSURLConnection's delegate sets some value that can be returned by the blocked method. I'm assuming this will involve some combination of NSLock and NSThread but I really don't know where to start with this, any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

It seems like this is a prime candidate for a library. You would register a delegate, set some parameters like multi-tap interval and swipe threshold, and get calls like swipeStarted/Ended, pinchStarted/Ended, multiTap, etc. Does such a library exist?

• Using udev to create a character device based on a driver being loaded

  I'm in the process of setting up RAID monitoring for a number of Dell servers that use the PERC 6i integrated card. We're using Nagios at present and the check_megasasctl plugin seems to fit the bill. However, the plugin relies upon the existence of: /dev/megaraid_sas_ioctl_node This device node doesn't exist by default, you have to create it by hand using something like: mknod /dev/megaraid_sas_ioctl_node c 253 0 Now, to make the existence of this device node persistent across reboots, I thought I could write a udev rule, but as usual, I'm missing something. I thought I could create a file such as /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local/rules that contained: DRIVER=="megasas" NAME="megaraid_sas_ioctl_node" MODE="0600" But this doesn't work - no device node after a reboot. Dmesg output indicates the megasas driver is loaded and functional: megasas: 00.00.04.01-RH1 Thu July 10 09:41:51 PST 2008 megasas: 0x1000:0x0060:0x1028:0x1f0c: bus 1:slot 0:func 0 megasas: FW now in Ready state Further, I don't see any means to instruct udev on which type of device node to create: character or block. I suspect I'm failing to understand exactly how udev is meant to work. I realise I could just cheat and run MegaCLI in /etc/rc.local, redirecting output to /dev/null; it creates the megaraid_sas_ioctl_node device node as part of its execution. I just thought using udev rules would be a) cleaner and b) a useful learning exercise. Perhaps I should just dump the above mknod command in /etc/rc.local... So how do I get udev to create the /dev/megaraid_sas_ioctl_node device node based on the presence of the megasas driver? Cheers Steve

  I have a Windows Forms app that, unfortunately, must make calls to controls from a second thread. I've been using the thread-safe pattern described on the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171728.aspx. Which has worked great in the past. The specific problem I am having now: I have a WebBrowser control and I'm attempting to invoke the WebBrowser.Navigate() method using this Thread-Safe pattern and as a result I am getting StackOverflow exceptions. Here is the Thread-Safe Navigate method I've written. [self.audioPlayer release]; Where do I go from here? Nils are used in a similar fashion throughout the code (and may cause similar problems) - is there a safe way to remove them? I'm new to memory management - how can I discern proper nil usage from bad nil usage?

• editButtonItem set but no minus buttons?

  My edit button is placed in viewDidLoad: self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = self.editButtonItem; It shows up correctly on the nav bar, and tapping this button indeed change it to Done. However, no minus buttons show up in my table rows. Swiping a row, then tap Delete works, though. Any ideas? EDIT 1: Here's how I'm doing: - (void)loadView { tableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame]]; tableView.delegate = self; tableView.dataSource = self; tableView.autoresizingMask = UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleWidth | UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleHeight; self.view = tableView; } EDIT 2: My observation is that the edit and minus buttons display fine if my tableview is created in IB (RootViewController). The other two (or three) tableview are created by the aforemention code, so that might be the problem. Guess I'd have to dive in to isEditing, editing and whatnot.

  I have a class that need to be serialized (for both persistentcy and client-server communication) for simplicity's sake let's call the classes Business a BusinessData and I prefix for their Interfaces. All the getter and setter are delegated from Business class to BusinessData class. I thought about implementing IBusinessData interface that will contain all the getter and setters and IBusiness interface that will extend it. I can either make Business extend BuisnessData so I will not need to implement all getter and setter delegates, or make some abstract class ForwardingBusinessData that will only delegate getter and setters. Any of the above option I lose my hierarchy freedom, do any of you have any creative solutions for this problem... I also reviewed DAO pattern: http://java.sun.com/blueprints/patterns/DAO.html

  I'm new to Objective C, and I seem to be struggling with accessing a method of an object I created. I'm checking out the documentation , but I'm not entirely sure tha tthis is a job for a delegate. For example I have an object (1) that creates another object (2). I can access a method of the object (2) after I create it, but I can't access it from a method of object (1). I get a error that the object was not defined in this scope. If anyone can help I greatly appreciate it. I just need a nudge in the right direction so that I can at least get a grasp on how to think about the interaction between the objects.

• Why can't I store a float value - it's always zero!

  I have a view controller that is created by the app delegate - it's the first one shown in the app. In its interface I declare float lengthOfTime; I also set it as a property: @property (nonatomic) float lengthOfTime; And in it's implemetation: @synthesize lengthOfTime; In the class viewDidLoad method, I set the value: self.lengthOfTime = 3.0f; However, after this, the value is always zero. No errors, no compile warnings, nothing. Just zero. The class is instantiated, it is showing in the view, so I'm pretty sure it's not a nil reference. I've searched all over Google and can't figure it out. What's going on?!? :(

• Using Timer only once

  Hi, I want to use a timer only once, at 1 second after the initialization of my main form. I thought the following would have a message box saying "Hello World" just once, but actually a new message box says "Hello World" every one second. Why so? I had put t.Stop() in the tick event. Also, do I need to dispose the timer somehow to avoid memory leakage? Following Scenario: I have a = UIViewController A that contains a UIScrollView I have a second UIViewController "B" (amongst other things it contains a button) and add it to the ScrollView of A myView *mView = [[myView alloc] init]; [myScrollView addSubview:mView.view]; Is there a way that once the button is pressed that it(view) removes itself from the scrollview? I thought in the direction of setting the delegate of mView to "A" ?! But not sure how that should work in detail.... Any suggestions? Thanks!

  I have a function that needs to perfom two operations, one which finishes fast and one which takes a long time to run. I want to be able to delegate the long running operation to a thread and I dont care when the thread finishes, but the threads needs to complete. I implemented this as shown below , but, my secondoperation never gets done as the function exits after the start() call. • Should class IOException in Java have been an unchecked RuntimeException?

  Do you agree that the designers of Java class java.io.IOException should have made it an unchecked run-time exception derived from java.lang.RuntimeException instead of a checked exception derived only from java.lang.Exception? I think that class IOException should have been an unchecked exception because there is little that an application can do to resolve problems like file system errors. However, in When You Can't Throw An Exception, Elliotte Rusty Harold claims that most I/O errors are transient and so you can retry an I/O operation several times before giving up: For instance, an IOComparator might not take an I/O error lying down, but — because many I/O problems are transient — you can retry a few times, as shown in Listing 7: Is this generally the case? Can a Java application correct I/O errors or wait for the system to recover? If so, then it is reasonable for IOException to be checked, but if it is not the case, then IOException should be unchecked so that business logic can delegate handling of this exception to a separate system error handler.

  I have an application that isn't nav based. So there is no UINavigationController in the App Delegate. However, I need to switch to a UINavigationController for a piece of the application. Steps I currently took... Create a new Class that extends UIViewController Added a UINavigationController via IB Told IB that the new UIViewController's view is the view for the UINavigationController The problem now is that the File's Owner needs it's view set. But via IB there is no way to specify this. So obviously, I'm not going about this the right way. Any tips in the right direction are much appreciated.

• How can I make my tableview enter editing mode?

  Hi, for some reason I can't get my tableview to enter editing mode. It's a little harder than it might seem because I'm using some open source code to make a calendar (iCal esque) with a tableview under it, and it's not quite as straightforward as just using a regular tableview. Basically, I have two classes. One (let's say Class A) is a UIViewController and the other (Class B) is that viewController's datasource and tableview delegate. In Class B, I've implemented -(void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath; which works fine, but if I put an edit nav bar item in Class A (the view controller), nothing happens. Am I forgetting certain protocols, or certain special methods that I need to write? Thanks for any help, and apologies if I'm missing something, I'm just learning to work with other people's code.
