• Creating a future proof .NET 3.5 SP1 installer prerequisite for setup.exe AND the .MSI

  I've demanded .NET 3.5 SP1 a la http://stackoverflow.com/questions/88136/will-a-vs2008-setup-project-update-net-3-5-sp1. This makes the setup.exe check correctly. I've also added a "SP1" launch condition to my MSI so it doesn't let the user install my .NET 3.5SP1 app via launching the MSI (and replaced the [VSDNETMSG] in the Framework condition message with one that actually mentions SP1). From a future proofing point of view, this feels wrong. I want the condition to be: (NETVer=3.5 AND Net35SPLevel=1) OR (NETVer=>3.5) not (NETVer=3.5 AND Net35SPLevel=1) Is there any way to do that? The framework check doesnt have a condition property to allow me to add a sub-condition... Yes, I could also just not worry my pretty little head about it :P If one of the MS versioning experts out there reads this, if you're going to put stuff that code depends on into SPs, can you please make the installer be able to check for it OOTB. (I really wish they had come up with a better numbering scheme - the world and its dog could see that this was going to get confusing)

• Deploying a PyQt application on Windows Vista x64

  I'm working on an application for a client/friend using PyQt. I've been working on Linux and testing on Vista, but the target computer is Vista x64. Now, Python comes with compiled binaries of Python 2.6 for 64 bit Windows, but Riverbank don't provide 64 bit binaries for PyQt. I don't have much access to the target computer, so I can't really go through the hassle of compiling PyQt. This Google code project might be the solution, but I'm not sure if it's going to work. Can I use something like py2exe from 32 bit Vista, or would I have to have to make the executable from a 64 bit machine with PyQt 64 bit installed? Basically, am I going to have to compile PyQt on the target machine?

At the beginning of your drawing code, it is a good idea to use glClear() to initialize the color buffer. A full-screen clear of each of your color, depth, and stencil buffers (if you're using them) at the start of a frame can also generally improve your application's performance. On other platforms, I've always found it to be an optimization to not clear the color buffer if you're going to draw to every pixel. (Why waste time filling the color buffer if you're just going to overwrite that clear color?) How can a call to glClear() improve performance?

• UTF-8 encoding problem with flash mysql and php

  Hi, As you may know, I am programming an on-line game using FLASH. I am connecting my FLASH 8 movie with MySQL database through PHP. I am doing very good in that, and I have everything working fine. The problems come when I am trying to insert (Using the INSERT SQL func) data to the database that are non-english. In other words, UTF-8 data. I red a lot of articls about that stuff and found and apply the fallowing: 1. In PHP4, you need to tell the PHP to use UTF-8 when using the xml_parser_crater() func, however, in PHP5 that is done automatically. Even though I told PHP5 to use the UTF-8 when calling the func. Adding the header to the XML sent to PHP from flash. Force the FLASH to use UTF-8 encoding in the preference options. Set the encoding in MySQL to UTF-8 (utf8_unicode_ci with InnoDB engine). I can read and insert the other language data correctly in the phpadmin as well. I did all that in my coding, and still I can't insert such data. one more strange thing is that, when I use the same link, that the FLASH using, with the XML, that the FLASH creating, on the browser (google chrome), I got the data inserted right in the database!!!!! I am about to get crazy about that stuff, What am I missing? what cause the problem? Thank you in advance.

• Objective-C getter/ setter question

  Hi, im trying to works my way trough an Objective-C tutorial. In the book there is this example: @interface { int width; int height; XYPoint *origin; } @property int width, height; I though, hey there's no getter/setter for the XYPoint object. The code does work though. Now i'm going maybe to answer my own question :). I thinks its because "origin" is a pointer already, and whats happening under the hood with "width" and "height", is that there is going te be created a pointer to them.. Am i right, or am i talking BS :) ??

• PHP + SQL Server or VB.NET + MySQL

  Can someone suggest that out of the two mentioned (odd?) combinations, which is less odd, or in other words, is less trouble to work with + maintain. If it helps, the system is going to have two front-ends - one web application and one desktop application. The desktop application is going to be coded using VB.NET, and the web application in PHP. There's really no reason why the desktop application can't be replaced by a web application as well - except that one of the programmers seem to really want to code it in VB.... However, none of us have experience working with either of these pairs (you could easily call us n00bs), so we are a bit apprehensive to start. P.S. hosting service will be gotten from some provider and not be on the client's own server.

• Insufficient permissions within Eclipse when installed via synaptic in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Eclipse via the Synaptic Package Manager on Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (more details on footer). However, from within Eclipse, I lack sufficient permissions to perform upgrades on my package and add-ons. I'm a recovering Windows user, and while I have a couple of years Ubuntu experience, I am unfamiliar with the command-line and mainly interact through the packaged GUI. Specifically, I am trying to install the upgrade for Eclipse CVS Clientorg.eclipse.cvs.feature.group1.3.100.v20110520-0800-7B78FHl9VF7BD7KBM4GP9C I am tracking the varying installation advice on a similar question eclipse install: Gaurav Butola Basically, the most current upgrades are available directly from eclipse?... But at some point I remember reading that the latest version of eclipse had been designed for the previous LTS of Ubuntu - I don't know if that is still true. I have read about the vulnerabilities of Java 6, and so I have gone with Open Java 7 openjdk-amd64 (if that has any relevance to which Eclipse package and installation method I choose). But I'm not crazy about the idea of creating a gksudo link in the sidebar launcher. I don't know enough about chown to use it - if that's even appropriate (I don't want stray java escaping from Eclipse and connecting to SkyNet). Another possible solution that I foresee is modifying my user's group memberships/privileges on the file system as a whole. The only other information that I think might be relevant is that I notice that Synaptic installed all of the files into /usr/ instead of /opt/ like I have seen recommended. So should I be changing ownership, reinstalling using a non-Synaptic method, or what? Any advice is greatly appreciated. • how to optimize illustrator artwork in flash?

  I'm working on a flash project that incorporates a lot of artwork done in Illustrator CS4. I've been copy-pasting directly from Illustrator into Flash, and I add some animations as well. Final file is going to be a one single swf file which will be a part of UI for an application and .net will be the core for this. But now flash becomes unusable slow to respond for actions. My machine is a fast i7 with 6gb of RAM, so I don't think that's the issue. We are going to use this file with dual core atom processors. Does anyone have ideas for alternative importing techniques, optimizations within illustrator, anything at all that will make this more manageable? Thanks

• Integrating Fedex and UPS into Rails Apps

  I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: Fedex or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between Fedex and UPS? I was leaning towards Fedex, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. I gave away all my points, so SO wont' let me post another link in this question. • Generating a reasonable ctags database for Boost

  I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 and I ran the command: $ ctags -R --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -f ~/.vim/tags/stdlibcpp /usr/include/c++/4.2.4/ to generate a ctags database for the standard C++ library and STL ( libstdc++ ) on my system for use with the OmniCppComplete vim script. This gave me a very reasonable 4MB tags file which seems to work fairly well. However, when I ran the same command against the installed Boost headers: $ ctags -R --c++-kinds=+p --fields=+iaS --extra=+q -f ~/.vim/tags/boost /usr/include/boost/ I ended up with a 1.4 GB tags file! I haven't tried it yet, but that seems likes it's going to be too large to be useful. Is there a way to get a slimmer, more usable tags file for my installed Boost headers? Edit Just as a note, libstdc++ includes TR1, which has allot of Boost libs in it. So there must be something weird going on for libstdc++ to come out with a 4 MB tags file and Boost to end up with a 1.4 GB tags file.

• Need to debug LINQ simple queries in Visual Studio 2010

  I often get in a position when I need to know why my LINQ doesnt work as intended... I use object collections and extensions. I dont want spend more than couple of minutes on it. LINQ supposed to make developer's life easier not harder. I hoped VS 2010 will have it fixed but I now use RC and it still doesnt let me type LINQ and check what is going on... Says as before "Expression cannot contain lambda expressions"... Is there some add-on for Visual Studio so I can quickly and effectively run ad-hoc queries and find out what is going on and where I am wrong?

• A bounce-rate attack to manipulate SEO ?

  This is a question to experienced people that might help us shed some light on the issue. We noticed a very strange behavior on our site, in Google Analytics. Some dude from Finland, namely, from Kouvola city is hitting one of our pages - only one page on our site, 'bout a hundred times per day, all with an average bounce rate of 90%+... This is causing our overall bounce rate to go up by 1 to 3% per day... which is very disturbing.. since we're trying to do our best in order to keep it as low as possible. And obviously having it jumped from ~24% to 27%, just because of that crazy dude is not making us happy at all... We tried implementing a geo-targeted script in order to catch this particular visitor and deliver him a juicy message, and it seemed like it helped in the beginning, it has stopped for a day or two, but now he's back... The geo-targeted script was also logging all IP addresses for page requests originating from Finland in order to find out more details and (in order to block them on the server level, later).. but thing is, it was all mainly cable or DSL connections with various, but not constantly repeating IPs... we are all wondering what is he up to really ? I think that this page should be kept updated with ideas on how to combat this and perhaps someone could also shed light on what it might be ? What is the reason for doing this "bounce-rate attack", as I call it? • Incorporating MIT/X11 licensed code into project

  I'm rewriting a small MIT-licensed program in C, and I intend to copy a segment from it (though not verbatim) that prints usage information and such things. The programs are going to behave, for the most part, the same, but the implementations are going to be much different. What is the best way to incorporate this code into my program, whether it's licensed under Apache 2, GPLv2/3, or under the MIT license? My guess is that for the first two listed I'd just add the original authors name to the NOTICE file along with relevant information and paste the license header as a comment above the derived code, and for the latter I'd just add the original author's copyright statement above my own.

• website creation - for non web programmers?

  I thought I would find decent questions and answers for this, but none really caught my eye... I am a C++ developer and I own a few domains. I'd like to start off with simple web sites for each with a minimum of time and fuss and minimum learning. I have too many projects going and don't have the time to learn how to build websites. One is for a company that currently has only a single product with custom development as well. I hacked together some really bad html with paypal links on it. It is just one simple product. I want to add uservoice to it and maybe some other stuff like FAQ, forums, etc. Right now I just link to a google group I created. Another is a startup in development phase, but we want to provide simple content like whitepapers and press releases and a section for investors. - mostly an "about us" type of thing. We will also be providing details about our product. Then there is a blog site - currently using godaddy's quickblogcast. Not a bad start but I suspect I want to move to something else. The question is - is there a framework that I can use that will make decent, if not outstanding, sites? Again, I have my hands full with three projects in addition to my day job and don't have time to learn web programming. I also don;t want to just pay a web person and then be out in the cold for upgrades, changes, etc. I have been burned before. I am happy with a web-based app or a desktop app that builds html or whatever and then I can ftp it up to the hosting servers. To summarize: - simple to get started - low time to get a web page going - ability to integrate with a few hand-done pages - pay pal integration - uservoice integration - ability to put under my svn would be nice too EDIT Thanks to the responders. I understand now why my original searches failed. I was not searching for "CMS". I'll go back and do that. I would expect that this is a many-times-duplicate... EDIT: I am considering using Wordpress and Drupal - one for each of the sites. I did one Drupal site quickly just so I could qualify for one of the Microsoft programs for discounted dev tools - anyway - it was a quick and dirty homepage and I am still on the learning curve. I look forward to playing with it. So far it has been ok. I am not sure about doing a taste-test between the two - might be a waste of time where I could just become that much better at Drupal faster than spending time on wordpress... Will keep updated. EDIT: Selecting the Drupal answer by slim for now. That is what I am going with. Don't have time to check them all out. Wordpress sounds like a good option too, but such limited time... Results: I have tried wordpress and drupal so far. Wordpress is great for blogging or for a site that you want to run ads from, but I disagree that it is ready for a corporate site, unless you want to spend lots of time making your own theme, etc. But if you spend that time, why not work with drupal? Drupal was a little intimidating at first - but after spending about 4 hours reading the overview and step-by-step guide online was a HUGE step. I got a simple site up and running easily after that. Trying to make a website just by going to the admin panel without reading anything is a waste of time. You really need to read the docs. Wordpress is really great for that. So now I've got two sites running with a lot of the functionality I wanted - and they look good. I guess either one will work - it is just a matter of getting comfortable witht he basics, using the right tools and trying things out.

• Setting up java configurations in eclipse..Param files

  I'm going to be using ECJ for doing genetic programming and I haven't touched java in years. I'm working on setting up the eclipse environment and I'm catching a few snags. The ECJ source has several packages, and several sample programs come along with it. I ran one sample program (called tutorial1) by going to the run configurations and adding -file pathToParamsFile to the program arguments. This made it point to the params file of that tutorial and run that sample. In a new example I am testing (from the package gui) there are TWO params files. I tried pointing to just one param file and a program ran in the console, but there was supposed to be a GUI which did not load. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be greaaatly appreciated.

It seems like the best value because the SEOV is crazy high. That is like $70k a month. #3 has the highest PBR, but also the lowest SEOV. #2 doesn't seem worth it because of the PR competetion. Might be a little too hard to get into the top page of Google. I'm wondering which keywords to target, and if I should be looking at any other metric to see if this is a profitable niche to jump into. Thanks.

• what is the oldest glib version that a qt application can run with

  I am trying to build a standalone qt application (built on ubuntu and deployed on Red Hat 5.3, both 64 bits) after building a qt application that is statically linked to the qt library I tried to run the program on red hat and got an error saying libc.so.6 was not found and that GLIBC_2.9 or GLIBC_2.10 is not installed and needed. I tried doing a yum install glibc but then I get a message saying that glibc is up to date (its version is 2.0) I guees I am going to restart the build process but this time from a red hat installation. What do you sugges I should do in this case. My goal is to build a standalone qt application that only needs to run on red hat 5 (im pretty sure there is also going to be an issue with fontconfig.so but I can simply provide this library directly in the same directory as the app)

• mysql medium int vs. int performance?

  Hi, I have a simple users table, i guess the maximum users i am going to have is 300,000. Currently i am using: CREATE TABLE users ( id INT UNSIGEND AUTOINCEREMENT PRIMARY KEY, .... Of course i have many other tables that the users(id) is a FOREIGN KEY in them. I read that since the id is not going to use the full maximum of INT it is better to use: MEDIUMINT and it will give better performance. Is it true? (I am using mysql on Windows Server 2008) Thanks.

• How do I get a TextBox to only accept numeric input in WPF?

  I'm looking to accept digits and the decimal point, but no sign. I've looked at samples using the NumericUpDown control for WinForms, and this sample of a NumericUpDown custom control from Microsoft. But so far it seems like NumericUpDown (supported by WPF or not) is not going to provide the functionality that I want. The way my app is designed, nobody in their right mind is going to want to mess with the arrows. They don't make any practical sense, in the context of my app. So I'm looking for a simple way to make a standard WPF TextBox accept only the characters that I want. Is this possible? I signed up for myopenID and replaced my username in the delegate, but I don't understand what goes under "open_id" - is it just my URL? I'm just not sure what's going on, or what name I should put in the admin page at all (is it the username at myopenID?). I may have it all right, but I keep getting "OpenID server not found" so something is going wrong on both my local and remote server.

• Is using jquery to call a WCF Data Service from the UI violating the MVC pattern.

  I'm fairly new to ASP.Net MVC 2 and understand the MVC pattern in itself. But my question is what's the best way to populate dropdownlists in the UI sticking to the MVC pattern. Should I be going through the controller? Every article I've seen to do this shows how to do it using javascript and jquery. I have a test application that I'm re-writing in MVC2 I have my dropdowns working with jquery basically calling a WCF Data Service that returns JSON which populates the dropdowns. Seems to me though that this is bypassing the controller and going straight to the model therefore strictly violating the MVC pattern. Or am I missing something obvious here. You thoughts or best practices would be greatly welcome here. Thanks

  I'd like to sell instructional videos over the web. Primarily, I'd like uses to subscribe to the site and be allowed access to videos over the internet. Secondarily, I might sell DVDs for those who have poor internet connections or would like a physical copy, or possibly I'd sell eBooks and the like in the future. Regarding the subscriptions: I'd like a system that automatically sends out e-mails when it is time to renew I'd like to be able to offer free trials Users without a free trial or subscription should not be able to access the content Incidentally, I plan to host videos on my current web host and move them to a CDN when volume (and capital) make this a good idea. While I have no intention to go crazy with the DRM, it seems expedient not to directly link to the files -- how can I link to them indirectly? It would be nice to support multiple payment processors -- specifically, I'd like to avoid a PayPal only approach. Are there any web applications (or plugins) you'd recommend for something like this? While I've set up and administered several web technologies, I've never done anything with e-commerce. I see there are possibilities like osCommerce, one friend recommends using WordPress with plugins, and it really appears that for any given CMS, you can graft on components like this, although I imagine that not all are created equal. As I'm not tied to a particular web application (and, while open source software that can run on a LAMP [p=perl, python, php] stack is preferable), I'd like to make a good choice at the beginning.
