    I'm trying to build my first fractal (Pythagoras Tree): in Java using Graphics2D. Then if step is odd I need to build right triangle on the top of square. If step is even I need to build two squares on free sides of the triangle. What method should I choose now for drawing both triangle and squares ? I was thinking about drawing triangle with simple lines transforming them with AffineTransform but I'm not sure if it's doable and it doesn't solve drawing squares.

  • Suggestion on Database structure for relational data

    Hi there. I've been wrestling with this problem for quite a while now and the automatic mails with 'Slow Query' warnings are still popping in. Basically, I have Blogs with a corresponding table as well as a table that keeps track of how many times each Blog has been viewed. This last table has a huge amount of records since this page is relatively high traffic and it logs every hit as an individual row. I have tried with indexes on the fields that are included in the WHERE clause, but it doesn't seem to help. I have also tried to clean the table each week by removing old ( 1.weeks) records. SO, I'm asking you guys, how would you solve this?   • Template Child Class Overriding a Parent Class's Virtual Function

    The below code compiles with gcc v4.3.3 and the templated child class seems to be overriding a virtual function in the parent, but doesn't that break the rule that you cannot have a virtual template function?     I have a fairly good understanding of the dereferencing operator, the address of operator, and pointers in general. I however get confused when I see stuff such as this: int* returnA() { int *j = &a; return j; } int* returnB() { return &b; } int& returnC() { return c; } int& returnC2() { int *d = &c; return *d; } In returnA() I'm asking to return a pointer; just to clarify this works because j is a pointer? In returnB() I'm asking to return a pointer; since a pointer points to an address, the reason why returnB() works is because I'm returning &b? In returnC() I'm asking for an address of int to be returned. When I return c is the & operator automatically "appended" c? In returnC2() I'm asking again for an address of int to be returned. Does *d work because pointers point to an address? Assume a, b, c are initialized as integers. Can someone validate if I am correct with all four of my questions?

    Hello, I am writing a CUDA kernel to create a 3x3 covariance matrix for each location in the rows*cols main matrix. So that 3D matrix is rows*cols*9 in size, which i allocated in a single malloc accordingly. I need to access this in a single index value the 9 values of the 3x3 covariance matrix get their values set according to the appropriate row r and column c from some other 2D arrays. In other words - I need to calculate the appropriate index to access the 9 elements of the 3x3 covariance matrix, as well as the row and column offset of the 2D matrices that are inputs to the value, as well as the appropriate index for the storage array. i have tried to simplify it down to the following: //I am calling this kernel with 1D blocks who are 512 cols x 1row. How do I implement the following in C#: searchIdx = search index (starting with 0, then 1, etc. for each successive call to GetSearchContext. Initially start with 0. contextsTxt = string data to search in searchTxt = keyword to search for in contextsTxt numLines = number of lines to return surrounding the searchTxt found (ie. 1 = the line the searchTxt is found on, 2 = the line the searchTxt is found on, 3 = the line above the searchTxt is found on, the line the searchTxt is found on, and the line below the searchTxt is found on) returns the "context" based on the parameters string GetSearchContext(int searchIdx, string contentsTxt, string searchTxt, int numLines); If there's a better function interface to accomplish this feel free to suggest that as well.     One of my personal experiments to understand some of the C++0x features: I'm trying to pass a function pointer to a template function to execute. Eventually the execution is supposed to happen in a different thread.     I'm a C# programmer trying to muddle through C++ to create a Windows Forms Application. I have a Windows Form that makes use of a user-created class. Basically I'm trying to use a constructor that takes parameters, but my form won't let me initialize the object with parameter. Here's the code, hopefully somebody can explain the problem to me because I'm completely baffled... Here's my header file: BankAcct.h public ref class BankAcct { private: int money; public: BankAcct(); BankAcct(int); void Deposit(int); void GetBalance(int&); }; And my definition file: BankAcct.cpp #include "StdAfx.h" #include "BankAcct.h" BankAcct::BankAcct() { money = 0; } BankAcct::BankAcct(int startAmt) { money = startAmt; } void BankAcct::Deposit(int depAmt) { money += depAmt; } void BankAcct::GetBalance(int& balance) { balance = money; } And finally my main form. Won't copy the whole thing, of course, but I'm trying to declare the new bank account object, and start it with a balance of say $50. private: BankAcct myAccount(50); //does not work! WHY?? //private: //BankAcct myAccount; //works then in the form constructor my code is this: public: frmBank(void) { InitializeComponent(); int bal; myAccount.GetBalance(bal); lblBankBalance->Text += Convert::ToString(bal); } I've included the BankAcct.h file at the top of my frmBank.h, what else am I doing wrong here? It works great if I use the default constructor (the one that starts the bank balance at zero). Basically: I'd like to create a new anonymous class/instance on the fly (e.g. new Foo[Int] { ... } ), and pass it into an "add" method which will add it to a list, and then return it The key thing here is that the variable from "val foo = " I'd like its type to be the anonymous class, not Foo[Int], since it adds methods (someMethod in this example) Any ideas? I think the 2nd one fails because the type Int is being erased.     Hey there, this is part of a question i got in class, im at the final stretch but this has become a major problem. In it im given a certain value which is called the "gold value" and it is 40.5, this value changes in input. and i have these constants const int RUBIES_PER_DIAMOND = 5; // relative values. * const int EMERALDS_PER_RUBY = 2; const int GOLDS_PER_EMERALDS = 5; const int SILVERS_PER_GOLD = 4; const int COPPERS_PER_SILVER = 5; const int DIAMOND_VALUE = 50; // gold values. * const int RUBY_VALUE = 10; const int EMERALD_VALUE = 5; const float SILVER_VALUE = 0.25; const float COPPER_VALUE = 0.05; which means that basically for every diamond there are 5 rubies, and for every ruby there are 2 emeralds. So on and so forth. and the "gold value" for every diamond for example is 50 (diamond value = 50) this is how much one diamond is worth in golds. my problem is converting 40.5 into these diamonds and ruby values. I know the answer is 4rubies and 2silvers but how do i write the algorithm for this so that it gives the best estimate for every goldvalue that comes along?? please help!, im at my wits end

    Hi, I have the following simple DLL in c++ un-managed code; extern "C" __declspec(dllexport) void ArrayMultiplier(float (*pointerArray)[3], int scalar, int length); void ArrayMultiplier(float (*pointerArray)[3], int scalar, int length) { for (int i = 0 ; i < length ; length++) { for (int j = 0; j < 3; j++) { pointerArray[i][j] = pointerArray[i][j] * scalar; } } } I have tried writing the following wrapper function for the above in c#: [DllImport("sample.dll")] public static extern void ArrayMultiplier(ref float elements, int scalar, int length); where elements is a 2 dimentional 3x3 array: public float[][] elements = { new float[] {2,5,3}, new float [] {4,8,6}, new float [] {5,28,3} }; The code given above compiles, but the program crashes when the wrapper function is called: Wrapper.ArrayMultiplier(ref elements, scalar, length); Please help me here, and tell me whats wrong with the code above, or how a wrapper can be written for a simple c++ function: void SimpleFunction(float (*pointerToArray)[3]); Thank you all in advance

    Suppose we want to apply a series of transformations, int f1(int), int f2(int), int f3(int), to a list of objects. A naive way would be SourceContainer source; TempContainer1 temp1; transform(source.begin(), source.end(), back_inserter(temp1), f1); TempContainer2 temp2; transform(temp1.begin(), temp1.end(), back_inserter(temp2), f2); TargetContainer target; transform(temp2.begin(), temp2.end(), back_inserter(target), f3); This first solution is not optimal because of the extra space requirement with temp1 and temp2. So, let's get smarter with this: int f123(int n) { return f3(f2(f1(n))); } ... SourceContainer source; TargetContainer target; transform(source.begin(), source.end(), back_inserter(target), f123); This second solution is much better because not only the code is simpler but more importantly there is less space requirement without the intermediate calculations. However, the composition f123 must be determined at compile time and thus is fixed at run time. How would I try to do this efficiently if the composition is to be determined at run time? For example, if this code was in a RPC service and the actual composition--which can be any permutation of f1, f2, and f3--is based on arguments from the RPC call.

    I have a problem about malloc(). It is weird. My code is in the following. I use random generator to generate elements for an array. The array is opened by malloc(). If the array size is smaller than 8192, it is OK.     Given two integers X and Y, I want to overwrite bits at position P to P+N. Example: int x = 0xAAAA; // 0b1010101010101010 int y = 0x0C30; // 0b0000110000110000 int result = 0xAC3A; // 0b1010110000111010 Does this procedure have a name? If I have masks, the operation is easy enough: int mask_x = 0xF00F; // 0b1111000000001111 int mask_y = 0x0FF0; // 0b0000111111110000 int result = (x & mask_x) | (y & mask_y); What I can't quite figure out is how to write it in a generic way, such as in the following generic C++ function: template<typename IntType> IntType OverwriteBits(IntType dst, IntType src, int pos, int len) { // If: // dst = 0xAAAA; // 0b1010101010101010 // src = 0x0C30; // 0b0000110000110000 // pos = 4 ^ // len = 8 ^------- // Then: // result = 0xAC3A; // 0b1010110000111010 } The problem is that I cannot figure out how to make the masks properly when all the variables, including the width of the integer, is variable.
