  • External hdd boot entries added to GRUB after upgrade to 13.10

    - by Jason
Long story short, I was using my laptop's internal HDD as an external one on my desktop, and I forgot to remove it when I was upgrading to 13.10. Now GRUB on my desktop has added entries for the Windows and Ubuntu partitions that exist on the laptop's HDD, but I don't want them to be there. Can I safely remove them ? My GRUB table looks like this if I recall correctly: Ubuntu Advanced Options (or something like this) Memtest Another Memtest Entry Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1 Ubuntu 13.04 Advanced Options for Ubuntu 13.04 Where Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1 Ubuntu 13.04 Advanced Options for Ubuntu 13.04 are the entries from the external/laptop's HDD.

  • Mobile Game Engine

    - by Jason Crosby
I am trying to track down a game engine for developing mobile games for ios and android. I have been looking for weeks now and havent found what i am looking for. I like jmonkey engine for making desktop games. Its easy to use and it comes with everything you need. Its more that just some libraries. I'm looking for something similar for developing mobile games. I'd like it to be easy to use and have everything included not just a collection of libraries. And I would prefer to write in c++. I'm not looking for "the best". I'm just looking for some engines that match my criteria so I can try them out and see which one works best for me.

  • 12.04: I need a new network card - and I think this one may work?

    - by Jason Malone
I found this list of compatible USB wireless network adaptors: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-usb-wireless-compatibility-adapter-list.html Listed here is the Belkin F5D8053. I'm looking for a store to buy a suitable adaptor in locally and I can't find that particular adaptor - but I can see a Belkin F7D4101az. I think this is simply a newer model - but a Google search for "ubuntu belkin f7d4101az" brings no results - not even people trying to get it to work. Nothing. So I didn't want to purchase it without being sure. There's really only one PC shop that sells this sort of stuff around here - so here's a list of all my available options: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/wireless-cards-adapters/xx_7088_70095_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html I'd really like to get one today, because I have a lot of work to do and don't really want to have to wait a week for a new adaptor - I spent 6 or 7 hours last night trying to get my Dell 1450 to work with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Generate Unique Abstract Backgrounds with Ablaze

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you want custom and unique backgrounds without having to code your own image-generating engine, Ablaze makes it simple (and fun) to create abstract images. You can customize a wide array of options in Ablaze including the base shape (ring, horizontal line, or random), number of particles, distance each particle travels, and the speed (if you increase the speed range you get more distinct lines and if you decrease it you get smoother smokier shapes). You can also seed the design with a color palette pulled from any image you provide (the sample above was seeded with a Wonder Woman comic panel). Tweak and reset the pattern generation as much as you want; when you create an abstract image worthy of your desktop just click the save button to grab a copy of it in PNG format. • How to run a bootable USB drive as my primary PC for an extended period?

    - by jason
My hard drive has crashed, and I won't be able to buy a new one for a month or two. I've got a 16GB USB 3.0 flash drive that I'd like to have running a persistent ubuntu or ubuntu gnome distro. While it's not the best solution, is it a solution, or is it just a good way to wear out a flash drive? I plan on mostly storing things in Google Drive, so other than wearing out the flash drive, are there any risks involved?

  • Sound not working

    - by Jason
I am new to ubuntu, but really enjoy it. I do have one issue with setting it up on my computer. It is a GoBook XR-1 and everything works perfectly except there is no sound. I've searched and tried everything that I can think of, even uninstalling ubuntu and trying Windows to see if the speakers worked. I found out that it wasn't the speakers or any hardware issues. I tried to download the Realtek drivers, but still no success.

I am using box2D and I have two objects, one is bouncy ball and the other one is block. I'd like to find which side of the block is collided with, so I can only make the ball bounce when it hits the top. I tried to implement many things like fixture data and by detecting position, using manifold but not get the accurate result. I also tried to calculate distance between two object but all went wrong.

  • Ways to earn money through programming and/or programming knowledge [closed]

    - by Jason Swett
It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

  • Clear float issue

    - by Jason
I have a page with the standard navigation bar on the left and the content area taking up the rest of the horizontal area to its side. For modern browsers I am using table-row and table-cell values for the display attribute. However, for IE7 I included a conditional stylesheet that tries to float the nav bar. This works fine except when the content area itself has floated elements and I try to use clear. My goal is to displayed the clear element right after the content area floats but instead it gets shoved down below the nav area. The following demo code shows this issue. My goal is to get the table to display right below the "leftThing" and "rightThing" but instead there is a large gap between them and the table. <html> <head> <title>Float Test</title> <style type="text/css"> #body { background: #cecece; } #sidebar { background: #ababab; float: left; width: 200px; } #content { background: #efefef; margin-left: 215px; } #leftThing { background: #456789; float: left; width: 100px; } #rightThing { background: #654321; float: right; width: 100px; } table { clear: both; } </style> </head> <body> <div id="body"> <div id="sidebar"> <ul> <li>One</li> <li>Two</li> <li>Three</li> </ul> </div> <div id="content"> <div style="position: realtive;"> <div id="leftThing"> ABCDEF </div> <div id="rightThing"> WXYZ </div> <table> <thead> <th>One</th> <th>Two</th> </thead> <tr> <td>Jason</td> <td>45</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Mary</td> <td>41</td> </tr> </table> <p>Exerci ullamcorper consequat duis ipsum ut nostrud zzril, feugait feugiat duis dolor feugiat commodo, accumsan, duis illum eum molestie luptatum nisl iusto. • Clear all class variables between instances

    - by ensnare
This is probably a stupid question, but what's the best way to clear class variables between instances? I know I could reset each variable individually in the constructor; but is there a way to do this in bulk? Or am I doing something totally wrong that requires a different approach? Thanks for helping ... class User(): def __init__(self): #RESET ALL CLASS VARIABLES def commit(self): #Commit variables to database >>u = User() >>u.name = 'Jason' >>u.email = 'jason[email protected]' >>u.commit() So that each time User is called the variables are fresh. Thanks.

  • Create a Python User() class that both creates new users and modifies existing users

    - by ensnare
    I'm trying to figure out the best way to create a class that can modify and create new users all in one. This is what I'm thinking: class User(object): def __init__(self,user_id): if user_id == -1 self.new_user = True else: self.new_user = False #fetch all records from db about user_id self._populateUser() def commit(self): if self.new_user: #Do INSERTs else: #Do UPDATEs def delete(self): if self.new_user == False: return False #Delete user code here def _populate(self): #Query self.user_id from database and #set all instance variables, e.g. #self.name = row['name'] def getFullName(self): return self.name #Create a new user >>u = User() >>u.name = 'Jason Martinez' >>u.password = 'linebreak' >>u.commit() >>print u.getFullName() >>Jason Martinez #Update existing user >>u = User(43) >>u.name = 'New Name Here' >>u.commit() >>print u.getFullName() >>New Name Here Is this a logical and clean way to do this? Is there a better way? Thanks.

  • Need an ASP.NET MVC long running process with user feedback

    - by Jason
I've been trying to create a controller in my project for delivering what could turn out to be quite complex reports. As a result they can take a relatively long time and a progress bar would certainly help users to know that things are progressing. The report will be kicked off via an AJAX request, with the idea being that periodic JSON requests will get the status and update the progress bar. I've been experimenting with the AsyncController as that seems to be a nice way of running long processes without tying up resources, but it doesn't appear to give me any way of checking on the progress (and seems to block further JSON requests and I haven't discovered why yet). After that I've tried resorting to storing progress in a static variable on the controller and reading the status from that - but to be honest that all seems a bit hacky! All suggestions gratefully accepted!

  • How do you go from an abstract project description to actual code?

    - by Jason
Maybe its because I've been coding around two semesters now, but the major stumbling block that I'm having at this point is converting the professor's project description and requirements to actual code. Since I'm currently in Algorithms 101, I basically do a bottom-up process, starting with a blank whiteboard and draw out the object and method interactions, then translate that into classes and code. But now the prof has tossed interfaces and abstract classes into the mix. Intellectually, I can recognize how they work, but am stubbing my toes figuring out how to use these new tools with the current project (simulating a web server). In my professors own words, mapping the abstract description to Java code is the real trick. So what steps are best used to go from English (or whatever your language is) to computer code? How do you decide where and when to create an interface, or use an abstract class?

  • How to get an internship with a low GPA?

    - by Jason Baker
A lot of changed majors and some other mitigating circumstances have left me with a pretty low GPA. My GPA in the last couple of semesters hasn't been stellar, but my grades have gotten a LOT better. I want to try and start putting in some resumes to get a good internship this summer. I do think that I have some decent experience for someone at my level, but I see my GPA being a pretty big potential stumbling block. Is there anything I can do to help my chances of getting a good internship? (For the record, the mitigating circumstances aren't something I'd feel comfortable discussing with a potential employer. I'd prefer getting a job by proving my merit, not making excuses.)

  • Handling Exceptions that happen in a asp.net MVC Controller Constructor

    - by Jason
What's the best way to handle exceptions that happen from within a controller's constructor? All I can think of to do is use Application_OnError() or put a try/catch in my ControllerFactory. Neither of these solutions seem ideal. Application_OnError is to broad - I have some non-mvc content in the site that has its own error handling. Using a try/catch block seems kinda hacky. If I'm serving different content type -html/text/json/rss.... I would like to be able to handle the exception from within the action method instead of having to write all kinds of conditions to determine what kind of error message to serve. Am I missing something here, or has anyone else dealt with this?

  • obiee memory usage

    - by user554629
Heap memory is a frequent customer topic. Here's the quick refresher, oriented towards AIX, but the principles apply to other unix implementations. 1. 32-bit processes have a maximum addressability of 4GB; usable application heap size of 2-3 GB.  On AIX it is controlled by an environment variable: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x080000000   # 2GB ( The leading zero is deliberate, not required )   1a. It is  possible to get 3.25GB  heap size for a 32-bit process using @DSA (Discontiguous Segment Allocation)     export LDR_CNTRL=MAXDATA=0xd0000000@DSA  # 3.25 GB 32-bit only        One side-effect of using AIX segments "c" and "d" is that shared libraries will be loaded privately, and not shared.        If you need the additional heap space, this is worth the trade-off.  This option is frequently used for 32-bit java.   1b. 64-bit processes have no need for the @DSA option. 2. 64-bit processes can double the 32-bit heap size to 4GB using: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x100000000  # 1 with 8-zeros    2a. But this setting would place the same memory limitations on obiee as a 32-bit process    2b. The major benefit of 64-bit is to break the binds of 32-bit addressing.  At a minimum, use 8GB export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x200000000  # 2 with 8-zeros    2c.  Many large customers are providing extra safety to their servers by using 16GB: export LDR_CNTRL=....=MAXDATA=0x400000000  # 4 with 8-zeros There is no performance penalty for providing virtual memory allocations larger than required by the application.  - If the server only uses 2GB of space in 64-bit ... specifying 16GB just provides an upper bound cushion.    When an unexpected user query causes a sudden memory surge, the extra memory keeps the server running. 3.  The next benefit to 64-bit is that you can provide huge thread stack sizes for      strange queries that might otherwise crash the server.      nqsserver uses fast recursive algorithms to traverse complicated control structures.    This means lots of thread space to hold the stack frames.    3a. Stack frames mostly contain register values;  64-bit registers are twice as large as 32-bit          At a minimum you should  quadruple the size of the server stack threads in NQSConfig.INI          when migrating from 32- to 64-bit, to prevent a rogue query from crashing the server.           Allocate more than is normally necessary for safety.    3b. There is no penalty for allocating more stack size than you need ...           it is just virtual memory;   no real resources  are consumed until the extra space is needed.    3c. Increasing thread stack sizes may require the process heap size (MAXDATA) to be increased.          Heap space is used for dynamic memory requests, and for thread stacks.          No performance penalty to run with large heap and thread stack sizes.           In a 32-bit world, this safety would require careful planning to avoid exceeding 2GM usable storage.     3d. Increasing the number of threads also may require additional heap storage.          Most thread stack frames on obiee are allocated when the server is started,          and the real memory usage increases as threads run work. Does 2.8GB sound like a lot of memory for an AIX application server? - I guess it is what you are accustomed to seeing from "grandpa's applications". - One of the primary design goals of obiee is to trade memory for services ( db, query caches, etc) - 2.8GB is still well under the 4GB heap size allocated with MAXDATA=0x100000000 - 2.8GB process size is also possible even on 32-bit Windows applications - It is not unusual to receive a sudden request for 30MB of contiguous storage on obiee.- This is not a memory leak;  eventually the nqsserver storage will stabilize, but it may take days to do so. vmstat is the tool of choice to observe memory usage.  On AIX vmstat will show  something that may be  startling to some people ... that available free memory ( the 2nd column ) is always  trending toward zero ... no available free memory.  Some customers have concluded that "nearly zero memory free" means it is time to upgrade the server with more real memory.   After the upgrade, the server again shows very little free memory available. Should you be concerned about this?   Many customers are !!  Here is what is happening: - AIX filesystems are built on a paging model.   If you read/write a  filesystem block it is paged into memory ( no read/write system calls ) - This filesystem "page" has its own "backing store" on disk, the original filesystem block.   When the system needs the real memory page holding the file block, there is no need to "page out".    The page can be stolen immediately, because the original is still on disk in the filesystem. - The filesystem  pages tend to collect ... every filesystem block that was ever seen since    system boot is available in memory.  If another application needs the file block, it is retrieved with no physical I/O. What happens if the system does need the memory ... to satisfy a 30MB heap request by nqsserver, for example? - Since the filesystem blocks have their own backing store ( not on a paging device )   the kernel can just steal any filesystem block ... on a least-recently-used basis   to satisfy a new real memory request for "computation pages". No cause for alarm.   vmstat is accurately displaying whether all filesystem blocks have been touched, and now reside in memory.   Back to nqsserver:  when should you be worried about its memory footprint? Answer:  Almost never.   Stop monitoring it ... stop fussing over it ... stop trying to optimize it. This is a production application, and nqsserver uses the memory it requires to accomplish the job, based on demand. C'mon ... never worry?   I'm from New York ... worry is what we do best. Ok, here is the metric you should be watching, using vmstat: - Are you paging ... there are several columns of vmstat outputbash-2.04$ vmstat 3 3 System configuration: lcpu=4 mem=4096MB kthr    memory              page              faults        cpu    ----- ------------ ------------------------ ------------ -----------  r  b    avm   fre  re  pi  po  fr   sr  cy  in   sy  cs us sy id wa  0  0 208492  2600   0   0   0   0    0   0  13   45  73  0  0 99  0  0  0 208492  2600   0   0   0   0    0   0   9   12  77  0  0 99  0  0  0 208492  2600   0   0   0   0    0   0   9   40  86  0  0 99  0 avm is the "available free memory" indicator that trends toward zerore   is "re-page".  The kernel steals a real memory page for one process;  immediately repages back to original processpi  "page in".   A process memory page previously paged out, now paged back in because the process needs itpo "page out" A process memory block was paged out, because it was needed by some other process Light paging activity ( re, pi, po ) is not a concern for worry.   Processes get started, need some memory, go away. Sustained paging activity  is cause for concern.   obiee users are having a terrible day if these counters are always changing. Hang on ... if nqsserver needs that memory and I reduce MAXDATA to keep the process under control, won't the nqsserver process crash when the memory is needed? Yes it will.   It means that nqsserver is configured to require too much memory and there are  lots of options to reduce the real memory requirement.  - number of threads  - size of query cache  - size of sort But I need nqsserver to keep running. Real memory is over-committed.    Many things can cause this:- running all application processes on a single server    ... DB server, web servers, WebLogic/WebSphere, sawserver, nqsserver, etc.   You could move some of those to another host machine and communicate over the network  The need for real memory doesn't go away, it's just distributed to other host machines. - AIX LPAR is configured with too little memory.     The AIX admin needs to provide more real memory to the LPAR running obiee. - More memory to this LPAR affects other partitions. Then it's time to visit your friendly IBM rep and buy more memory.

  • ie7 innerhtml strange display problem

    - by thoraniann
Hello, I am having a strange problem with ie7 (ie8 in compatibility mode). I have div containers where I am updating values using javascript innhtml to update the values. This works fine in Firefox and ie8. In ie7 the values do not update but if a click on the values and highlight them then they update, also if a change the height of the browser then on the next update the values get updated correctly. I have figured out that if I change the position property of the outer div container from relative to static then the updates work correctly. The page can be viewed here http://islendingasogur.net/test/webmap_html_test.html In internet explorer 8 with compatibility turned on you can see that the timestamp in the gray box only gets updated one time, after that you see no changes. The timestamp in the lower right corner gets updated every 10 seconds. But if you highlight the text in the gray box then the updated timestamp values appears! The div "div_image_container" is the one that is causing this it seems, atleast if I change the position property for it from relative to static the values get updated correctly This is the page that updates the values: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Loader</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/> <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- window.onload = doLoad; function refresh() { //window.location.reload( false ); var _random_num = Math.floor(Math.random()*1100); window.location.search="?map_id=54&first_time=0&t="+_random_num; } var var_array = new Array(); var timestamp_array = new Array(); var_array[0] = Array('group_value_257_var_9','41.73',-1, 9, 0); var_array[1] = Array('group_value_257_var_7','62.48',-1, 7, 0); var_array[2] = Array('group_value_257_var_8','4.24',-1, 8, 0); var current_time = new Date(); var current_time_str = current_time.getHours(); current_time_str += ':'+current_time.getMinutes(); current_time_str += ':'+current_time.getSeconds(); timestamp_array[0] = Array('group_257_timestamp',current_time_str,'box_group_container_206',-1, -1); //timestamp_array[0] = Array('group_257_timestamp','11:33:16 23.Nov','box_group_container_257',-1, -1); window.parent.updateParent(var_array, timestamp_array); function doLoad() { setTimeout( "refresh()", 10*1000 ); } //--> </script> </head> <body> </body> </html> I edited the post and added a link to the webpage in question, I have also tested the webpage in internet explorer 7 and this error does not appear there. I have only seen this error in ie8 with compatibility turned on. If anybody has seen this before and has a fix, I would be very grateful. Thanks.

  • Incoming traceroute blocked by ufw

    - by Tobias Timpe
    One of my Proxmox VMs running Ubuntu 13.04 won't accept incoming trace routes while ufw is enabled. What command do give ufw to allow incoming traceroute(6)s? The following shows up in the syslog with ufw enabled: 50:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=33400 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33466 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:36 web kernel: [8078158.260409] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=1 ID=33401 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33467 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:41 web kernel: [8078163.262626] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=2 ID=33402 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33468 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:46 web kernel: [8078168.262927] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=2 ID=33403 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33469 LEN=32 Nov 4 16:20:51 web kernel: [8078173.260521] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:50:56:15:15:aa:ae:8d:7d:e4:7a:97:08:00 SRC=79.236.233.97 DST=78.46.101.252 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=2 ID=33404 PROTO=UDP SPT=63757 DPT=33470 LEN=32 And the trace route just ends in starts after the Proxmox host machine.
