• Tips for Using Multiple Development Systems

  When I travel, I don't pack up the desktop I use in the office and take it with me. Maybe I should, but I don't. However, since I'm a contract programmer I like to be able to work wherever I am: I'm mostly thinking of web development here. Version Control goes a long way in keeping sane and working on multiple projects on multiple systems (two or three computers); however, there are the issues of: IDE settings - different display sizes mean the IDE settings can't be completely synced, if at all. Database - if the database is 'external' (even if it's running on the same system, it's not in version control), how do you maintain the needed syncs of structure. Development Stack - Some projects need non-standard extensions, libraries, etc installed. Just an overview of some of the hassle involved with developing on multiple systems. I'll probably end up asking some specific questions, but I thought a CW style tips might reveal some things I would even think to ask about. Update: I guess this would also address tips to make upgrading/replacing your development system easier (something I've just done). So, one tip per answer please, so the 'top' tips are easy to find. How do you make it easier to develop on multiple systems, or to transfer work after upgrading/replaceing a development system?

• Jtable live updating problem

  Hi all, I'm trying to display a jtable in a pop up Jframe and am running into some problems. What i'am trying to do is as follows: catch a button action event in the main frame and display a pop up frame with a jtable populated with some data. The problem i have is that the jtable is populated with metadata i receive from a website and if i'm receiving many records, then the jtable is not displayed until all the records(metadata) is received from the website. I would like to change it such that as soon as the button event is detected in the main frame, I display the pop up frame along with the jtable and insert/update rows "as and when i receive the data from the website". • Crystal Reports error 7 "Out of memory"

  Hi guys, I have a VB6 application, reportwriter, that runs a crystal report and outputs a pdf. I have a .net 3.5 asp application that calls the reportwriter dll. I am getting an error saying 7 "Out of memory", when trying to load the report. I have 4gb of memory and running windows 7 (64 bit). I also have Crystals Reports 11 with service pack 4 installed. I have registered the dll and referenced it in my project. I have run out of ideas what could be causing this. I need some help. Any advice will be very much appreciated. I suspect it has nothing to do with Crystal Reports, but I cannot be sure. Has anyone come across this error message/issue? Also, I have a friend running the identical project in almost identical PC (bar a few different personal applications installed). It works for him. Cheers.

• Gathering entropy in web apps to create (more) secure random numbers

  after several days of research and discussion i came up with this method to gather entropy from visitors (u can see the history of my research here) when a user visits i run this code: $entropy=sha1(microtime().$pepper.$_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'].$_SERVER['REMOTE_PORT']. $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'].serialize($_POST).serialize($_GET).serialize($_COOKIE)); note: pepper is a per site/setup random string set by hand. then i execute the following (My)SQL query: $query="update `crypto` set `value`=sha1(concat(`value`, '$entropy')) where name='entropy'"; that means we combine the entropy of the visitor's request with the others' gathered already. that's all. then when we want to generate random numbers we combine the gathered entropy with the output: $query="select `value` from `crypto` where `name`='entropy'"; //... extract(unpack('Nrandom', pack('H*', sha1(mt_rand(0, 0x7FFFFFFF).$entropy.microtime())))); note: the last line is a part of a modified version of the crypt_rand function of the phpseclib. please tell me your opinion about the scheme and other ideas/info regarding entropy gathering/random number generation. ps: i know about randomness sources like /dev/urandom. this system is just an auxiliary system or (when we don't have (access to) these sources) a fallback scheme.

• What's the correct place to share application logic in CakePHP?

  I guess simple answer to the question would be a component. Although I agree, I feel weird having to write a component for something so specific. For example, let's say I have a table of users. When a user is created, it should form a chain reaction of events, initiating different kinds of data related to the user all around the database. I figured it would be best to avoid directly manipulating the database from different controllers and instead pack all that neatly in a method. However since some logic needs to be accesed separately, I really can't have the whole package in a single method. Instead I thought it would be logical to break it up to smaller pieces(like $userModelOrController->createNew() and $candyStorageModelOrController->createNew()) that only interact with their respective database table. Now, if the logic is put to the model, it works great until I need to use other models. Of course it's possible, but when compared to loading models in a controller, it's not that simple. It's like a Cake developer telling me "Sure, it's possible if you want to do it that way but that's not how I would do it". Then, if the logic is put to the controller, I can access other models really easy through $this->loadModel(), but that brings me back to the previously explained situation since I need to be able to continue the chain reaction indefinitely. Accessing other controllers from a controller is possible, but again there doesn't seem to be any direct way of doing so, so I'm guessing I'm still not doing it right. By using a component this problem could be solved easily, since components are available to every controller I want. But like I wrote at the beginning, it feels awkward to create a component specifically for this one task. To me, components seem more like packages of extra functionality(like the core components) and not something to share controller-specific logic. Since I'm new to this whole MVC thing, I could've completely misunderstood the concept. Once again, I would be thankful if someone pointed me to the right direction :)

  I want to be able to design and produce enterprise software/applications. Java EE comes to mind. but are there alternatives ? Does it have to be J2EE, to make enterprisey software ? More importantly, how common is it for developers to use Java Technology in order to build enterprise software ? I mean how much "meat" do you need to pack before you can charge a $100,000 sticker price ? is bloatware common in this industry ? what is the best way I can learn the entire Java Enterprise and be able to design and produce enterprise software ? Or perhaps an alternative to Java ? I am starting software engineering in University, but I have personal coding experience....i just would love to be able to design enterprise software using Java Technology....i can pick up books and start practicing.....i just dont know where to begin or what to expect. My goal is to get as much experience in enterprise software field, and specialize into niches start my own company. so far i know enterprise software sale process usually take at least a couple of months but for a good reason..

• Determine an elements position in a variable length grid of elements

  I have a grid of a variable number of elements. Say 5 images per row and a variable number of images. I need to determine which column (for lack of a better word) each image is in... i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. In this grid, images 1, 6, 12 and 17 would be in column 1 while 4, 9 and 15 would be in column 4. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 What I am trying to do is apply a background image to each element based on it's column position. • Database contents setting themselves to 0

  I have a Database that contains 4 tables, however I'm using 1 of them which is separated from the others. In this table I have 4 fields which are varchar and the rest are ints (11 other fields), when the users fill up the DB everything gets saved correctly, however it has happened 3 times so far that the database values for the int's reset to 0 without any apparent reason. At first, I thought, it was because those fields (where the numbers should go) were varchars not ints. However since I changed it, it happened again. I've already double checked my code and I have nothing that even updates or inserts a 0 value. Also I'm using codeigniter and active records which protect against SQL injections AND have XSS filtering enabled, could anyone point out something I might be missing or a reason for this to be happening? Also, I'm pretty sure about the answer of this but, is there ANY way to recover some data?? Other than having to ask everyone to fill in everything again.. =/ ** EDIT ** The Storage Engine is MyISAM and Collation is latin1_swedish_ci, Pack Keys are default, for all intents and purposes it's a normal DB

• Issue displaying a local image from XAML

  Hello, I have the below simple xaml: <Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Window1" Height="300" Width="300"> <Grid> <Image Source="happyface.jpg"/> </Grid> </Window> happyface.jpg is included in the project and its Build Action is set to "Content" and Copy To Ouptput Directory is set to "Copy Always". When looking at the app through the VS designer, everything is ok and I see the image. However, when I run the app, no image is displayed. I see the image is copied to the out out directory. If I put in the entire path as the source (C:\SANDBOX\WpfApplication1\WpfApplication1\bin\Debug") it works. Any ideas as to why the image is not displayed when I run the app? I read about pack URIs but thought that to just simply reference a loose image in the current directory, I can just use the image name. Thank you.

  so I tried to push some updates onto my repo on github via terminal on Mac OSX 10.8.4 and it doesn't work. What's the cleanest way to do this? My current approach involves [StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential, Pack = 1)] unsafe struct foo { ... } and a lot of fixed statements to read and write it, but it feels really clunky, and since the packet itself is not fixed length, I don't feel comfortable using it. Also, it's a lot of work. However, it does describe the data structure nicely, and the protocol may change over time, so this may be ideal for maintenance. What are my options? Would it be easier to just write it in C++ and use some .NET magic to use that?

• ASP.NET 2.0 in Virtual Trying to Use SQL State Server

  We have IIS 6 running on a W2003 Server. The root web site is running a v1.1 site. Under this site we have a virtual running a v2.0 site (with a separate application pool). The web.config for the root site is using SQL as its state server and has a 1.1 SQL state server database installed. The 2.0 virtual web.config does not need state and its web.config has no reference to a state server. When we attempt to call the virtual we receive this error message. "Unable to use SQL Server because ASP.NET version 2.0 Session State is not installed on the SQL server. Please install ASP.NET Session State SQL Server version 2.0 or above. This issue is currently only occurring on one web server. The rest are able to run the 2.0 virtual application. I also notice that if we call the 2.0 virtual with the IP address it does not generate the error, however if we call it with the host header name it generates the error (this behavior is only on the 1 web server with the error, all the others can be called with either the ip or host header without error). As an additional note the root and virtual are running with SSL. My theory is that the virtual 2.0 application is inheriting the 1.1 web.config state server entry from the root and when it looks at the state server it sees it as a 1.1 version and reports the error that it needs a 2.0 state server. I however cannot understand why the other servers are not behaving in this matter. All of the servers are on the same OS service pack as well as the same version of .net framework. Any ideas? Thanks

But in PrintDialog the user has the option to choose a individual margin that no sample cares about. If the user now selects a margin that is larger as the fixed margin set by program, the printout is truncated. Is there a way to get the user selected margin value from PrintDialog? TIA Michael

• CSS: 100% of container height without modifying the container

  Yeah, this ugly question again. I'm writing some HTML that gets inserted into a page. I have no control over the rest of the page. The structure is something like: <table <tr <td rowspan="2"left column</td <td height="1"top row above content</td </tr <tr<td height="220"my content here</td</tr </table I can write whatever I want into that table cell (including style tags to pack in my CSS), but I can't touch anything outside of it, which means I can't set the height of any parent element (including html and body), add a doctype (it has none), etc - that already kills just about every solution I can find (all seem to be "add a doctype" and/or "give the parent container a fixed height"). What I want to do is simply have a <div fill the entire cell. Width is no problem but unsurprisingly height is being a massive pain. Writing "height: 100%" doesn't do anything unless the container has a fixed height (the height="220" attribute apparently doesn't count) or the div uses absolute positioning - and then it seems to want to use 100% of the window's height (and width even) instead of the cell's. The root of the problem is the left column varies in height, as does the content, and when the left column cell is larger than the content, it won't expand to fill the cell it's in. If I set a fixed height for the content, it'll be much larger than necessary most of the time, and if I don't, it doesn't take up all of the cell and leaves an ugly gap at the bottom.

  Hi there, I'm back to C/C++ after some break. I've a following problem: I've a solution where I've several projects (compilable and linkable). Now I need to add another project to this solution which depends on some sources from other projects. My new project compiles without any problems (I've added "existing sources" to my project). the error: 1>Linking... 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "int __cdecl saveLic(char *,struct Auth *)" (?saveLic@@YAHPADPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) 1>LicenceManager.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl getSysInfo(struct Auth *)" (?getSysInfo@@YAXPAUAuth@@@Z) referenced in function "public: void __thiscall LicenceManager::generateLicence(int,char *)" (?generateLicence@LicenceManager@@QAEXHPAD@Z) Functions saveLic, and getSysInfo are defined in files which I've added to my new project from existing ones. There is object file created during compilation with those functions in target dir, but my LicenceManager class doesn't want to link. I use some extern "C" , and #pragma pack somewhere, but no more fancy stuff. I think every directory, lib and other necessary dependencies are visible in settings for this project. • JLabel wont change color twice

  Hi, I have the following code: public class Test extends JFrame implements ActionListener{ private static final Color TRANSP_WHITE = new Color(new Float(1), new Float(1), new Float(1), new Float(0.5)); private static final Color TRANSP_RED = new Color(new Float(1), new Float(0), new Float(0), new Float(0.1)); private static final Color[] COLORS = new Color[]{ TRANSP_RED, TRANSP_WHITE}; private int index = 0; private JLabel label; private JButton button; public Test(){ super(); setLayout(new BoxLayout(getContentPane(), BoxLayout.Y_AXIS)); label = new JLabel("hello world"); label.setOpaque(true); label.setBackground(TRANSP_WHITE); getContentPane().add(label); button = new JButton("Click Me"); button.addActionListener(this); getContentPane().add(button); pack(); setVisible(true); } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { if(e.getSource().equals(button)){ label.setBackground(COLORS[index % (COLORS.length - 1)]); } } public static void main(String[] args) { new Test(); } } When I run it I get the label with the TRANSP_WHITE background and then when I click the button this color changes to TRANSP_RED but when I click it again I see no change in color. Does anyone know why? Thanks

• C++ union data-structure, easy acccess of bits within a DWORD

  Im running through a set of DirectX tutorials online and I have the following structure: struct CUSTOMVERTEX { FLOAT x, y, z, rhw; // from the D3DFVF_XYZRHW flag DWORD color; // from the D3DFVF_DIFFUSE flag } My basic understanding of directX leads me to thing tha color is made up of 8-bit alpha, red, green and blue channels. I am attempting to get east access to these channels. Rather than write the following code numerous times (within the CUSTOMVERTEX structure): public: int red() { return (color & 0x00FF0000) >> 16; } I could write a more elegant somution with a combination of a union and a structure e.g. struct CUSTOMVERTEX { FLOAT x, y, z, rhw; // from the D3DFVF_XYZRHW flag #pragma pack(2) union { DWORD color; // from the D3DFVF_DIFFUSE flag struct { char a; char r; char g; char b; }; }; } However this does not appear to function as expected, the values in r, g, & b almost appear the reverse of whats in color e.g. if color is 0x12345678 a = 0x78, r = 0x56. Is this an endieness issue? Also what other problems could I be expecting from this solution? e.g. overflow from the color members? I guess what Im asking is ... is there a better way to do this?!

• How to make BoxLayout vertical but children flow top-aligned?

  I'm trying to get get a vertical, top-aligned layout to work. This is what I have: JPanel pane = new JPanel(); pane.setLayout(new BoxLayout(pane, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS)); MyImagePanel panelImage = new MyImagePanel(); panelImage.setSize(400, 400); pane.add(new JComboBox()); pane.add(panelImage); pane.add(new JButton("1")); pane.add(new JButton("2")); pane.add(new JButton("3")); JFrame frame = new JFrame("Title"); frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); frame.setSize(800, 600); frame.add(pane); frame.pack(); frame.setVisible(true); All the controls appear, but it looks like padding is being applied at run time between their tops and bottoms so they're somewhat vertically centered. This is what I'm going for: ----------------------------------------------------- | ComboBox | | ------------ | | | | | Image | | | | | ------------ | | Button 1 | Any additional space fills the right | ------------ | | Button 2 | | ------------ | | Button 3 | | ------------ | | | | Any additional space fills the bottom | | | ----------------------------------------------------- How do I get BoxLayout to do that? • Using an empty column as a divider in a JTable.

  I'm trying to use an empty column as a divider between pairs of columns in a JTable. Here's a picture and code for what I have so far. I know I can change the look using a custom TableCellRenderer. Before I go down that road, is there a better way to do this?   It's a real strange issue, the machine information below is from DXDiag. There is no error reported, but create CLSID_CaptureGraphBuilder2 instance always failed in the machine. It's okay to create CLSID_FilterGraph. Before create CLSID_CaptureGraphBuilder2, I have called CoInitialize and created CLSID_FilterGraph. Only this machine has the error, what dll related with this interface or any function needed to call before to make it work? Thanks in advance.
