  Hi, Im using jsf 2.0 to develop app where user has to select (using radio button) a date from the list of possible choices. List of dates is a managed bean property of type List< java.util.Date. • Creating immutable objects from javabean

  Hi All, I am involved in this project where we are building on good bit of legacy code. I have a particular situation about one big java bean object which has to be transferred over wire. So my first thought was to make it immutable and serializable to do the trick .At this point I am faced with a few difficult choices :- 1 Ideally I want some way to automatically generate an immutable, serializable version of this class. I dont have the scope to refactor or alter this class in any way and i would really really hate to have to copy paste the class with a different name ?? 2 Assuming that i gave up on 1 i.e i actually chose to duplicate code of the HUGE javabean class , i still will be in the unsavoury situation of having to write a constructor with some 20-25 parameters to make this class immutable. what is a better way to make a class immutable other than constructor injection ?? • sorting extendeddatatable in richfaces

  Hello All, does anyone know how exactly the default sorting works in richfaces datatable columns? (using sortby) My problem is that once a sort has been performed, the new data order is never preserved in my backing's bean data model (which makes me wonder where is this new order now stored?), that is the actual datamodel always contains just the original data.. So if say user goes to a another page and returns to what should be sorted data (using back button) , the data displays as original, not sorted.. Has anyone come across this? also, is there a way to do server side sorting, i.e. call my own sort method upon clicking the header..? many thanks for any advice!

  Hi, I'm having an issue with Hibernate 3.2.5, where I have to save only the parent object in a one-to-many relationship. For example, I have a flower A, that can have many details. Firstly I want to save only the flower, and the details will be added later.   Hi, Is there a way to dynamically create a selectItem list? I dont really want to have to create lots of bean code to make my lists return List<SelectItem>... • Are all "GET" requests to JSF "Initial Request"s?

  Hi, In JSF 1.1, I am assuming that GET requests are treated as initial requests (resulting in the creation of a new view), and POST requests are treated as Postbacks (resulting in the restoration of the old view). However, my application is behaving differently - it restores the same old view even for GET requests. Why does this happen? Is there a way to force the creation of a new view for GET requests? (My state-saving method is 'server'. I'm using MyFaces with JSP, and I have a t:saveState on a managed bean in the view) Regards, Pradyumna

  I need to know how many days are involved in a date diff. \For example: <? $start = new DateTime('2014-06-29 14:00:00'); $ende = new DateTime('2014-07-02 05:45:00'); $diff = $start->diff($ende); echo $diff->format('%R'); echo $diff->days; ?> The above code echos +2 My desired result would be 4, because the 29th, 30th, 1st and 2nd of July are "touched". I have no idea to achieve that with the given functions. Coding a day-subtraction seems to bean open door for errors.

• Spring @Transactional - Can I Override rollbackFor

  Hi all, I am calling a service which has the following annotation: @Transactional(rollbackFor=ExceptionA.class) public void myMethodA(....) throws ExceptionA { . . } I am calling this method from an other method in another Spring Bean. @Transactional(rollbackFor=ExceptionB.class) public void mainEntryPointMethod(....) throws ExceptionB { . try { myMethodA() } catch (ExceptionA exp) { . } . } My problem is that if myMethodA throws an exception, my transaction (which is passed from mainEntryPointMethod - myMethodA by default propagation) will be marked for rollback. Is there a way in which the 'rollbackFor' for the inner method can be overriden? Thanks in advance Chris

  Alrighty, I've got another little bit of code that I'm wrestling through. I'm building a conditional sidebar. The goal is to only show blog related stuff when posts in the "blog" category are being viewed. I've got part of it working, but the part where I'm trying to bring in an RSS feed of the category into the sidebar to show as recent posts. It doesn't work, and since I'm a php newb I'm not entirely sure why. Any suggestions or pointers are much appreciated.   I, along with Alexis's help, delivered a Java EE 6 hands-on lab to a packed room of about 40+ attendees at Devoxx 2011. The lab was derived from the OTN Developer Days 2012 version but added lot more content to showcase several Java EE 6 technologies. The problem statement from the lab document states: This hands-on lab builds a typical 3-tier Java EE 6 Web application that retrieves customer information from a database and displays it in a Web page. The application also allows new customers to be added to the database as well. The string-based and type-safe queries are used to query and add rows to the database. Each row in the database table is published as a RESTful resource and is then accessed programmatically. Typical design patterns required by a Web application like validation, caching, observer, partial page rendering, and cross-cutting concerns like logging are explained and implemented using different Java EE 6 technologies. The lab covered Java Persistence API 2, Servlet 3, Enterprise JavaBeans 3.1, JavaServer Faces 2, Java API for RESTful Web Services 1.1, Contexts and Dependency Injection 1.0, and Bean Validation 1.0 over 47 pages of detailed self-paced instructions. Here is the complete Table of Contents: The lab can be downloaded from here and requires only NetBeans IDE "All" or "Java EE" version, which includes GlassFish anyway. All the feedback received from the lab has been incorporated in the instructions and bugs filed (Updated 49559, 205232, 205248, 205256). 80% of the attendees could easily complete the lab and some even completed in much less than 3 hours. That indicates that either more content needs to be added to the lab or the intellectual level of the attendees at the conference was pretty high. I think the lab has enough content for 3 hours but we moved at a much more faster pace so I conclude on the latter. Truly a joy to conduct a lab to 40 Devoxxians! Another related lab that might be handy for folks is "Develop, Deploy, and Monitor your Java EE 6 applications using GlassFish 3.1 Cluster". It explains how: Create a 2-instance GlassFish cluster Front-end with a Web server and a load balancer Demonstrate session replication and fail over Monitor the application using JavaScript The complete lab instructions and source code are available and you can try them. I plan to continue evolving the contents for the Java EE 6 hands-on lab to cover more technologies and features and will announce them on this blog. • JUDCon 2013 Trip Report

  JUDCon (JBoss Users and Developers Conference) 2013 was held in historic Boston on June 9-11 at the Hynes Convention Center. JUDCon is the largest get together for the JBoss community, has gone global in recent years but has it's roots in Boston. The JBoss folks graciously accepted a Java EE 7 talk from me and actually referenced my talk in their own sessions. I am proud to say this is my third time speaking at JUDCon/the Red Hat Summit over the years (this was the first time on behalf of Oracle). I had great company with many of the rock stars of the JBoss ecosystem speaking such as Lincoln Baxter, Jay Balunas, Gavin King, Mark Proctor, Andrew Lee Rubinger, Emmanuel Bernard and Pete Muir. Notably missing from JUDCon were Bill Burke, Burr Sutter, Aslak Knutsen and Dan Allen. Topics included Java EE, Forge, Arquillian, AeroGear, OpenShift, WildFly, Errai/GWT, NoSQL, Drools, jBPM, OpenJDK, Apache Camel and JBoss Tools/Eclipse. My session titled "JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond" went very well and it was a full house. This is our main talk covering the changes in JMS 2, the Java API for WebSocket (JSR 356), the Java API for JSON Processing (JSON-P), JAX-RS 2, JPA 2.1, JTA 1.2, JSF 2.2, Java Batch, Bean Validation 1.1, Java EE Concurrency and the rest of the APIs in Java EE 7. I also briefly talked about the possibilities for Java EE 8. The slides for the talk are here: JavaEE.Next(): Java EE 7, 8, and Beyond from reza_rahman Besides presenting my talk, it was great to catch up with the JBoss gang and attend a few interesting sessions. On Sunday night I went to one of my favorite hangouts in Boston - the exalted Middle East Club as Rolling Stone refers to it (other cool spots in an otherwise pretty boring town is "the Church"). As contradictory as it might sound to the uninitiated, the Middle East Club is possibly the best place in Boston to simultaneously get great Middle Eastern (primarily Lebanese) food and great underground metal. For folks with a bit more exposure, this is probably not contradictory at all given bands like Acrassicauda and documentaries like Heavy Metal in Baghdad. Luckily for me they were featuring a few local Thrash metal bands from the greater Boston area. It wasn't too bad considering it was primarily amateur twenty-something guys (although I'm not sure I'm a qualified critic any more since I all but stopped playing about at that age). It's great Boston has the Middle East as an incubator to keep the rock, metal, folk, jazz, blues and indie scene alive. I definitely enjoyed JUDCon/Boston and hope to be part of the conference next year again.

• JavaOne: Parleys.com, Spring Vs. Java EE and HTML5 tooling

  Parleys.com, a 2012 Duke's Choice Award winner, is an E-Learning platform that host content from different sources (conferences, JUGs meetings, etc.). There is a lot of technical content available for online but also offline consumption, including many sessions on Java EE. Parleys has just released, for free, all the Devoxx 2011 sessions (video and slides sync'ed!). From a technical point of view, Parleys.com is interesting as they have switched from Spring to Java EE 6 to avoid being locked in a proprietary framework. During the GlassFish Community BoF, Stephan Janssen (Parleys.com and Devoxx founder) also presented how GlassFish is used to support 2000 concurrent Parleys users over a cluster of 2 GlassFish instances. Talking about Java EE and/or Spring, Harshad Oak has posted an update on the 'Spring Vs. Java EE' panel discussion that took place on Tuesday. As Arun said standards such as Java EE does not necessarily refrain innovation: "JBoss Forge & Arquillian from RedHat are great examples of innovation in the JavaEE community. Standardization is important but innovation does continue even within that framework." Simplicity, productivity along with HTML5 are the driving themes of Java EE 7. In terms of simplicity and productivity, the developer experience can also be improved by the tooling. Every NetBeans release comes with a large set of improvements, the just released NetBeans 7.3 beta is no exception. The goal of ‘NB 7.3’s Project Easel’ is to improve HTML5 development, something that will be handy for Java EE 7 developers. • Partial Submit vs. Auto Submit

  Partial Submit ADF Faces adds the concept of partial form submit to JavaServer Faces 1.2 and beyond. A partial submit actually is a form submit that does not require a page refresh and only updates components in the view that are referenced from the command component PartialTriggers property. Another option for refreshing a component in response to a partial submit is call AdfContext.getCurrentInstance.addPartialTarget(component_instance_handle_goes_here)in a managed bean. If a form contains required fields that the user left empty invoking the partial submit, then errors are shown for each of the field as the full form gets submitted. Autosubmit An input component that has its autosubmit property set to true also performs a partial submit of the form. However, this time it doesn't submit the entire form but only the component that triggers the submit plus components referenced it in their PartialTriggers property. For example, consider a form that has three input fields inpA, inpB and inpC with autosubmit=true set on inpA and required=true set on inpB and inpC. use case 1: Running the view, entering data into inpA and then tabbing out of the field will submit the content for inpA but not for inpB and inpC. Further more, none of the required field settings on inpB and inpC causes an error. use case 2: You change the configuration of inpC and set its PartialTriggers property to point to the ID of component inpA. When rerunning the sample, entering a value into inpA and tabbing out of the field will now submit the inpA and inpC fields and thus show an error for the missing required value on inpC. Internally, using autosubmit=true on an input component sets the event root to just this field, which good to have in case of dependent field validation or behavior. The event root can extended to include other components by using the Partial Triggers property on these components to point to the input field that has autosubmit=true defined. PartialSubmit vs. AutoSubmit Partial submit set on a command component submits the whole form and leaves it to the developer to decide which UI component is refreshed in response. Client side required field validation (as well as the server side equivalent) is not disabled by executed in this scenario. Setting immediate=true on the command item to skip validation doesn't help as it would also skip the model update. Auto submit is a functionality on the input components and also performs a partial form submit. However, in addition an event root is defined that narrows the scope for the submitted data and thus the components that are validated on the request. • c# WinForms ReportViewer Performance issue using RefreshReport() and ServerReport.SetParameters()

  Hi All, Currently I am writing a c# client application that uses the WinForms ReportViewer Control to display reports from a remote server. I am having performance troubles with the ReportViewer Control, to be specific with the 2 methods reportViewer.ServerReport.SetParameters() and reportViewer.RefreshReport() – they both take a really long time to complete and not just on the very first call, but on each subsequent call as well. SetParameters() takes 20 to 40 seconds (they vary greatly in time, some execute event okay fast) and RefreshReport() is a bit faster but still takes ages. I don’t think the server is the culprit, as the same report viewed using the browser renders pretty fast, about a second tops. The report in question doesn't matter as well. When I break into the process and take a look at the call stack, I see a call to Socket.DoConnect. So I thought that’s a good reason to start using fiddler and I installed it, disabled caching and fired up the app again to see which call takes that long to connect, but the performance issue was gone. By using a proxy I am having the same performance as the webbrowser. FYI: I am using NTLM authentication in the following way: reportViewer.ServerReport.ReportServerCredentials.NetworkCredentials = new NetworkCredentials() { Username = ... } I don’t have a strong webbackground, so I guess my question is: What should this tell me / What should I be looking into? (Btw: Adding fiddler to my installation package is not the solution I am looking for :)) I am grateful for any pointers. Take care, -Martin
