  • Put stored procedure result set into a table-- any shortcuts besides INSERT INTO...EXEC?

    - by larryq
Hi everyone, I'm creating a temp table that's the result of a stored procedure's result set. Right now I'm using the create table statement, followed by insert into....exec. It gets the job done but I was curious if there are other ways of going about this? I wish it were possible to run a select into, with the stored procedure's result set serving the role of the select statement, so that I wouldn't have to write a create statement beforehand (so that if the stored proc's columns change, there wouldn't be any modifications needed.) If there are other ways to go about this that might fit my needs better I'd love to hear about them. Thanks very much.

  • STORED PROCEDURE working in my local test machine cannot be created in production environment.

    - by Marcos Buarque
Hi, I have an SQL CREATE PROCEDURE statement that runs perfectly in my local SQL Server, but cannot be recreated in production environment. The error message I get in production is Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Incorrect syntax near '='. It is a pretty big query and I don't want to annoy StackOverflow users, but I simply can't find a solution. If only you could point me out what settings I could check in the production server in order to enable running the code... I must be using some kind of syntax or something that is conflicting with some setting in production. This PROCEDURE was already registered in production before, but when I ran a DROP - CREATE PROCEDURE today, the server was able to drop the procedure, but not to recreate it. I will paste the code below. Thank you! =============== USE [Enorway] GO /****** Object: StoredProcedure [dbo].[Spel_CM_ChartsUsersTotals] Script Date: 03/17/2010 11:59:57 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE PROC [dbo].[Spel_CM_ChartsUsersTotals] @IdGroup int, @IdAssessment int, @UserId int AS SET NOCOUNT ON DECLARE @RequiredColor varchar(6) SET @RequiredColor = '3333cc' DECLARE @ManagersColor varchar(6) SET @ManagersColor = '993300' DECLARE @GroupColor varchar(6) SET @GroupColor = 'ff0000' DECLARE @SelfColor varchar(6) SET @SelfColor = '336600' DECLARE @TeamColor varchar(6) SET @TeamColor = '993399' DECLARE @intMyCounter tinyint DECLARE @intManagersPosition tinyint DECLARE @intGroupPosition tinyint DECLARE @intSelfPosition tinyint DECLARE @intTeamPosition tinyint SET @intMyCounter = 1 -- Table that will hold the subtotals... • How do I get output into Java from a SELECT stored procedure in Oracle?

    - by Ventrue
I'm using Java to connect to an Oracle 10 Database. I want to create a stored procedure (don't ask why) that takes no arguments and returns a lot of rows. Specifically, in Java I want to be able to get this data with something like: ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("call getChildless"); where getChildless is the query: SELECT objectid FROM Object WHERE objectid NOT IN (SELECT parent FROM subparts); However, I just cannot for the life of me figure out how to get my output from the stored procedure. I've googled it and I get all this sample code that Oracle won't compile, presumably it's for a previous version. Refcursors seem to come up a lot, but I'm not sure if that's what I actually want, to use it with a ResultSet.

  • How to run an SQL stored procedure through C# at a specific time?

    - by yishai neeman
I am building a website now for a library and i need to check every day at the same time if there are people who need to return their books in the next five days and to send them a reminder via email. My question is what will be the correct way to do that? What i need to accomplish is when the specific time of day comes i need to run an sql stored procedure and check either through visual studio 2010 or any other way if the stored procedure has returned any results to which i need to email. Is there a way to maybe check the system time constantly on C# and not as a triggered event?

  • How can I (both) create a row and accessing that row in the same 'Stored Procedure'?

    - by Richard77
Hello, I'd like to get the value of the id column for an object just after I've created it. But I don't want to run another query for that. My book for beginner (SQL Server 2008 for Dummies) says that there are 2 tables (inserted and deleted) that hold the last row(s) that have been inserted, updated, or deleted. Unfortunately, only Triggers (says the book) can access those tables. But, if I use triggers, they will go off each time I "insert" a row even when I don't need them that functionality. Can I obtain the same effect with a Store Procedure (without having to run a separate query?) This is what I'm trying to do CREATE PROCEDURE myProcedure DECLARE @OrganizationName @ColumnID OUTPUT AS INSERT INTO Organization (OrganizationName) VALUES (@OrganizationName) SET @ColumnID = (// Please, I need Help here ...) Thanks for helping

  • How to use a value from one stored procedure in another?

    - by RoguePlanetoid
I have the following statement in a Stored Procedure: DECLARE @Count INT EXEC @Count = GetItemCount 123 SELECT @Count Which calls another stored procedure with the following statement inside: SELECT COUNT(Item) FROM tblItem WHERE ID = @ID However when I test the call the EXEC outputs the value correctly but it is not assigned to the @Count Variable correctly. I've seen examples or stored procedures used like this, including here but none had a parameter and a return value used (that I could find). The ID Parameter is passed into the second statement which returns a count value used by the first StoredProcedure - all the info I have read seems to indicate this should work - but it doesn't the @Count value is aways zero, even when the GetItemCount returns always the correct value. This is in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 if that helps.

  • Command line mode only -- successful login only brings me back to login screen

    - by seth
whenever I log in the screen goes black, I see a glimpse of terminal-esque text, and then it brings me back to the log in screen (Ubuntu 12.04). I can enter and log in via the command line. The guest account works find. I think this happened because I edited some Xorg related file trying to make an external monitor work with my laptop. I copy pasted from a forum post so I dont recall the file or what i put in the file. Can't find the forum post again and my bash history wasn't recorded from that session. I tried reinstalling Xorg and ubuntu-desktop, nvidia, resetting any configs I could find... I'm really at a loss of what to do. • C#: Optional Parameters - Pros and Pitfalls

    - by James Michael Hare
When Microsoft rolled out Visual Studio 2010 with C# 4, I was very excited to learn how I could apply all the new features and enhancements to help make me and my team more productive developers. Default parameters have been around forever in C++, and were intentionally omitted in Java in favor of using overloading to satisfy that need as it was though that having too many default parameters could introduce code safety issues.  To some extent I can understand that move, as I’ve been bitten by default parameter pitfalls before, but at the same time I feel like Java threw out the baby with the bathwater in that move and I’m glad to see C# now has them. This post briefly discusses the pros and pitfalls of using default parameters.  I’m avoiding saying cons, because I really don’t believe using default parameters is a negative thing, I just think there are things you must watch for and guard against to avoid abuses that can cause code safety issues. Pro: Default Parameters Can Simplify Code Let’s start out with positives.  Consider how much cleaner it is to reduce all the overloads in methods or constructors that simply exist to give the semblance of optional parameters.  For example, we could have a Message class defined which allows for all possible initializations of a Message: 1: public class Message 2: { 3: // can either cascade these like this or duplicate the defaults (which can introduce risk) 4: public Message() 5: : this(string.Empty) 6: { 7: } 8:  9: public Message(string text) 10: : this(text, null) 11: { 12: } 13:  14: public Message(string text, IDictionary<string, string> properties) 15: : this(text, properties, -1) 16: { 17: } 18:  19: public Message(string text, IDictionary<string, string> properties, long timeToLive) 20: { 21: // ... 22: } 23: }   Now consider the same code with default parameters: 1: public class Message 2: { 3: // can either cascade these like this or duplicate the defaults (which can introduce risk) 4: public Message(string text = "", IDictionary<string, string> properties = null, long timeToLive = -1) 5: { 6: // ... 7: } 8: }   Much more clean and concise and no repetitive coding!  In addition, in the past if you wanted to be able to cleanly supply timeToLive and accept the default on text and properties above, you would need to either create another overload, or pass in the defaults explicitly.  With named parameters, though, we can do this easily: 1: var msg = new Message(timeToLive: 100);   Pro: Named Parameters can Improve Readability I must say one of my favorite things with the default parameters addition in C# is the named parameters.  It lets code be a lot easier to understand visually with no comments.  Think how many times you’ve run across a TimeSpan declaration with 4 arguments and wondered if they were passing in days/hours/minutes/seconds or hours/minutes/seconds/milliseconds.  A novice running through your code may wonder what it is.  Named arguments can help resolve the visual ambiguity: 1: // is this days/hours/minutes/seconds (no) or hours/minutes/seconds/milliseconds (yes) 2: var ts = new TimeSpan(1, 2, 3, 4); 3:  4: // this however is visually very explicit 5: var ts = new TimeSpan(days: 1, hours: 2, minutes: 3, seconds: 4);   Or think of the times you’ve run across something passing a Boolean literal and wondered what it was: 1: // what is false here? 2: var sub = CreateSubscriber(hostname, port, false); 3:  4: // aha! Much more visibly clear 5: var sub = CreateSubscriber(hostname, port, isBuffered: false);   Pitfall: Don't Insert new Default Parameters In Between Existing Defaults Now let’s consider a two potential pitfalls.  The first is really an abuse.  It’s not really a fault of the default parameters themselves, but a fault in the use of them.  Let’s consider that Message constructor again with defaults.  Let’s say you want to add a messagePriority to the message and you think this is more important than a timeToLive value, so you decide to put messagePriority before it in the default, this gives you: 1: public class Message 2: { 3: public Message(string text = "", IDictionary<string, string> properties = null, int priority = 5, long timeToLive = -1) 4: { 5: // ... 6: } 7: }   Oh boy have we set ourselves up for failure!  Why?  Think of all the code out there that could already be using the library that already specified the timeToLive, such as this possible call: 1: var msg = new Message(“An error occurred”, myProperties, 1000);   Before this specified a message with a TTL of 1000, now it specifies a message with a priority of 1000 and a time to live of -1 (infinite).  All of this with NO compiler errors or warnings. So the rule to take away is if you are adding new default parameters to a method that’s currently in use, make sure you add them to the end of the list or create a brand new method or overload. Pitfall: Beware of Default Parameters in Inheritance and Interface Implementation Now, the second potential pitfalls has to do with inheritance and interface implementation.  I’ll illustrate with a puzzle: 1: public interface ITag 2: { 3: void WriteTag(string tagName = "ITag"); 4: } 5:  6: public class BaseTag : ITag 7: { 8: public virtual void WriteTag(string tagName = "BaseTag") { Console.WriteLine(tagName); } 9: } 10:  11: public class SubTag : BaseTag 12: { 13: public override void WriteTag(string tagName = "SubTag") { Console.WriteLine(tagName); } 14: } 15:  16: public static class Program 17: { 18: public static void Main() 19: { 20: SubTag subTag = new SubTag(); 21: BaseTag subByBaseTag = subTag; 22: ITag subByInterfaceTag = subTag; 23:  24: // what happens here? 25: subTag.WriteTag(); 26: subByBaseTag.WriteTag(); 27: subByInterfaceTag.WriteTag(); 28: } 29: }   What happens?  Well, even though the object in each case is SubTag whose tag is “SubTag”, you will get: 1: SubTag 2: BaseTag 3: ITag   Why?  Because default parameter are resolved at compile time, not runtime!  This means that the default does not belong to the object being called, but by the reference type it’s being called through.  Since the SubTag instance is being called through an ITag reference, it will use the default specified in ITag. So the moral of the story here is to be very careful how you specify defaults in interfaces or inheritance hierarchies.  I would suggest avoiding repeating them, and instead concentrating on the layer of classes or interfaces you must likely expect your caller to be calling from. For example, if you have a messaging factory that returns an IMessage which can be either an MsmqMessage or JmsMessage, it only makes since to put the defaults at the IMessage level since chances are your user will be using the interface only. So let’s sum up.  In general, I really love default and named parameters in C# 4.0.  I think they’re a great tool to help make your code easier to read and maintain when used correctly. On the plus side, default parameters: Reduce redundant overloading for the sake of providing optional calling structures. Improve readability by being able to name an ambiguous argument. But remember to make sure you: Do not insert new default parameters in the middle of an existing set of default parameters, this may cause unpredictable behavior that may not necessarily throw a syntax error – add to end of list or create new method. Be extremely careful how you use default parameters in inheritance hierarchies and interfaces – choose the most appropriate level to add the defaults based on expected usage. • WCF Service returning 400 error: The body of the message cannot be read because it is empty

    - by Josh
I have a WCF service that is causing a bit of a headache. I have tracing enabled, I have an object with a data contract being built and passed in, but I am seeing this error in the log: <TraceData> <DataItem> <TraceRecord xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/2004/10/E2ETraceEvent/TraceRecord" Severity="Error"> <TraceIdentifier>http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/System.ServiceModel.Diagnostics.ThrowingException.aspx</TraceIdentifier> <Description>Throwing an exception.</Description> <AppDomain>efb0d0d7-1-129315381593520544</AppDomain> <Exception> <ExceptionType>System.ServiceModel.ProtocolException, System.ServiceModel, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089</ExceptionType> <Message>There is a problem with the XML that was received from the network. Set to false before deployment to avoid disclosing exception information --> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true"/> <dataContractSerializer maxItemsInObjectGraph="6553600" /> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> </system.serviceModel> Here is what my request object looks like [DataContract] public class CustomerRequest : RequestBase { [DataMember] public int Id { get; set; } [DataMember] public int SiteId { get; set; } } And the RequestBase: [DataContract] public abstract class RequestBase : IRequest { #region IRequest Members [DataMember] public int PageSize { get; set; } [DataMember] public int PageIndex { get; set; } #endregion } And my IRequest interface public interface IRequest { int PageSize { get; set; } int PageIndex { get; set; } } And I have a wrapper class around my service calls. Here is the class. public class MyService : IMyService { IRDCService service; public MyService() { //service = new MySite.RDCService.RDCServiceClient(); EndpointAddress address = new EndpointAddress(APISettings.Default.ServiceUrl); BasicHttpBinding binding = new BasicHttpBinding(BasicHttpSecurityMode.None); binding.TransferMode = TransferMode.Streamed; binding.MaxBufferSize = 65536; binding.MaxReceivedMessageSize = 4194304; ChannelFactory<IRDCService> factory = new ChannelFactory<IRDCService>(binding, address); service = factory.CreateChannel(); } public Response<Customer> GetCustomer(CustomerRequest request) { return service.GetCustomer(request); } public Response<Customer> GetSiteCustomers(CustomerRequest request) { return service.GetSiteCustomers(request); } } and finally, the response object. [DataContract] public class Response<T> { [DataMember] public IEnumerable<T> Results { get; set; } [DataMember] public int TotalResults { get; set; } [DataMember] public int PageIndex { get; set; } [DataMember] public int PageSize { get; set; } [DataMember] public RulesException Exception { get; set; } } So, when I build my CustomerRequest object and pass it in, for some reason it's hitting the server as an empty request. Any ideas why? I've tried upping the object graph and the message size. When I debug it stops in the wrapper class with the 400 error. I'm not sure if there is a serialization error, but considering the object contract is 4 integer properties I can't imagine it causing an issue.

  • Where ORMs blur the lines between code and data, how do you decide what logic should be a stored procedure, and what should be coded?

    - by PhonicUK
Take the following pseudocode: CreateInvoiceAndCalculate(ItemsAndQuantities, DispatchAddress, User); And say CreateInvoice does the following: Create a new entry in an Invoices table belonging to the specified User to be sent to the given DispatchAddress. Create a new entry in an InvoiceItems table for each of the items in ItemsAndQuantities, storing the Item, the Quantity, and the cost of the item as of now (by looking it up from an Items table) Calculate the total amount of the invoice (ex shipping and taxes) and store it in the new Invoice row. At a glace you wouldn't be able to tell if this was a method in my applications code, or a stored procedure in the database that is being exposed as a function by the ORM. And to some extent it doesn't really matter. Now technically none of this is business logic. You're not making any decisions - just performing a calculation and creating records. However some may argue that because you are performing a calculation that affects the business (the total amount to be invoiced) that this isn't something that should be done in a stored procedure and instead should be in code. So for this specific example - why would it be more appropriate to do one or the other? And where do you draw the line? Or does it even particular matter as long as it's sufficiently well documented?
