• How do you explain ethernet cable problems to non networking people?

  We've recently been doing a large network migration in our datacenter. We've had a few cables in this start to deliver really bad pings (in excess of 500ms on a LAN) before they could be replaced. The cables we were replacing weren't made the best. They where all hand made and the runs were so short on some of them that the bend radius was definitely too tight. Some of them ran in bundles right in front of the heat exhaust of the power supplies. The cables were running ok until we started pulling the ones surrounding them out. Then a few started having the problem I mentioned above degrading performance and causing reliability issues. I'm trying to figure out the best way to explain this to non networking people. Is there any documentation that people could recommend or other methods?

• Why is Windows 7 so slow to log-on when my Wireless USB dongle is plugged in?

  I'm using an Edimax Wireless USB dongle (model EW-7711UTN) on Windows 7 64-bit. The dongle works brilliantly (it was truly plug-and-play) except for one thing. I've noticed that if the dongle is plugged in whilst I'm logging on to Windows it introduces a massive delay - after I type in my password and hit enter, Windows shows the "Welcome" screen, then the screen goes black for 2 minutes or so (with just the cursor showing) before finally displaying my desktop. If I unplug the dongle before I enter my password, Windows goes straight to my desktop. Even though the dongle didn't appear to need drivers for Windows 7, I did try downloading the latest ones from the Edimax website, but that made no difference.

  I am interested in getting the spec of a machine, because I am thinking getting a similar server. What I am mostly interested in knowing is the number of cores / CPUs / etc., the amount of memory, the speed of the CPUs, the CPU cache size, and any other detail which is important for performance. My question is two-fold: Which parameters should I be interested in other than the ones I specified above? Is there an easy way to read them off the machine in Linux? cat /proc/cpuinfo reveals a lot about the CPUs, for example... What about memory (would rather not rely on top), etc?

• How to disable auto-assume in Google Chrome

  I've noticed that whenever I sign in in Google Chrome version 21.0 it automatically assumes and it automatically knows what I want to search. I basically use the address bar to search(my default search engine is Google) I don't go type Google.com on the address bar and then search from there. So what happens is that when I type something for example "vernier" for vernier caliper I'm automatically redirected to my facebook account which has a user account name of vern.ancheta. It's really getting annoying, this happens for every search term that I used maybe even ones that I haven't used before in my entire search history in Google. It always assumes as if it knows what I'm really thinking. What's the solution for this? Is this a bug in Google Chrome or just one of its annoying features. Please enlighten me on this.

• MapReduce job is hung after 1 of 5 reducers completed on single-node environment

  I have only one Data Node on my dev environment on EC2. I ran heavy MR job and in 6 hours noticed that 100% of mappers and 20% of reducers finished (1 of reducer shows 100% competition, other ones - 0%). Looks like job is hung between 2 reducer runs. I don't see any errors in log files. What it can be? P.S. • Wireless controllers vs wireless usb hub

  For my htpc i currently only have a steerin wheel as a controller. This is wired and it looks really bad having extended usb wires from the tv to the table. However im thinking of bying some new Gamepads and now comes the question. Should i buy wireless ones or wired and connect them to a wireless usb hub? Having a wireless hub would let me manage my gamepads easily from the couch. A wireless hub also allows me to connect other things that are not input devices from the couch. However im wondering if wireless usb hubs may not be made for input devices in the way that they may not have 100% uptime and probably some delay. Am i right about this?

• Extracting httpdocs from Plesk Panel 9.5.4 Webserver backup file

  Good day, I am having problems manually extracting domains from Plesk 9.5 backup that was FTPed onto my back up server. I have followed the article http://kb.parallels.com/en/1757 using method 2. The problem is here: zcat DUMP_FILE.gz DUMP_FILE My backup file CP_1204131759.tar is a tar archive and zcat does not work with it. So I proceed to run the command: cat CP_1204131759.tar CP_1204131759. But when I try # cat CP_1204131759 | munpack I get an error that munpack did not find anything to read from standard input. I went on to extract the tar backup file using the xvf flags and got a lot of files (20) similar to these ones: CP_sapp-distrib.7686-0_1204131759.tgz CP_sapp-distrib.7686-35_1204131759.tgz CP_sapp-distrib.7686-6_1204131759.tgz How best can I extract the httpdocs of a domain from this server wide Plesk 9.5.4 backup?

• VPN Router + LDAP/RADIUS?

  Hello all! I need a VPN-capable router, preferably with a web interface, that should be able to authenticate against my LDAP server which is behind the router. The problem stems from the fact that I'm utterly unable to configure that setup for the Linksys RVS4000 that I own. Anything exists that is both cheap and easy to setup? Flashing the firmware is an option, as long as it is a well-documented option. Would it be viable/doable? [Edit] Okay, I've been looking at custom firmwares, any way to know which ones will work with my router before nuking its present one to oblivion? Anyone has experimented with that? My needs are quite simple, I want a DHCP router, an LDAP authenticated VPN, and basic firewall capabilities. I'm using DynDNS from the RVS4000 for now, but I guess I could setup something on the servers instead, that's only a minor problem...

• How restore qmail backup files

  We are using qmail as our mail application on a linux server. A few weeks ago our server crashed and we had everything installed from scratch and our users started to send & receive email again. The problem is they have lost their old emails. We have a back up of the whole qmail directory. But I don't know how to restore the old emails without losing the new ones. It's worth mentioning that I don't have any problem with restoring old sent mails. When I copy email files into .sent-mail/cur directory, I have them restored in sent box of users, but restoring files in /cur directory doesn't work for inbox emails and I can't get them restored.

• DNS propagation

  I have 1 primary DNS server (ns1.mydomain.com) running on Fedora and 2 secondary ones (ns2 and ns3). DNS changes made on my web servers first goes to the primary name server and then propagates to the secondary servers. After making a DNS change on a domain on the web server, I can't see the new dns information on my ns1 when I perform: dig @ns1 A blahblah.com I then went to the master records on the names server (uses named) in the directory /var/named/run-root/var/named/masters and I see the A record has been updated appropriately. Tailing the logs /var/log/messages is not showing any errors. What could be the issue?

• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS. • Make symlink on Windows of whole tree without modifying the original folder

  I'm trying to do this: make a symlink of a whole directory "C:/Master", in different folders like "C:\Projects\Alpha\", "C:\Projects\Beta\" an so on. "Master" directory usually changes in files and data. I work on the "Projects/*", where every project folder uses the "Master" files, but every one has new files in them. Let's say, I point to the car engine in every project folder, and inside them I add different kind of wheels. The problem I'm having, as a Windows 8 user, is that symlinks (junction) acts as a window to "Master" - I'm not allowed to add any file inside. I looking a way to reference the entire "Master" directory, and add new files - not edit any of the "Master" ones. It's as described here, but on Windows.

• Disable Thunderbird "failed to connect" notifications

  My network manager doesn't start until I log in, so for the first ten seconds or so after I login I have no Internet connection. The problem is that I have Thunderbird set to automatically start on login, so it helpfully tells me it "failed to connect" every time I log in. Also, my Internet connection isn't too reliable, so I sometimes get those messages even when I'm supposedly connected. Is there any way to disable these notifications, while still allowing the ones about new mail? • How to find malicious IPs?

  Cacti shows irregular and pretty steady high bandwidth to my server (40x the normal) so I guess the server is udnder some sort of DDoS attack. The incoming bandwidth has not paralyzed my server, but of course consuming the bandwidth and affects performance so I am keen to figure out the possible culprits IPs add them to my deny list or otherwise counter them. When I run: netstat -ntu | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n I get a long list of IPs with up to 400 connections each. I checked the most numerous occurring IPs but they come from my CDN. So I am wondering what is the best way to help monitor the requests that each IP make in order to pinpoint the malicious ones.   Hi, I want a third party hosting my main site with PHP, MySQL, etc... I don't know which DNS records to modify. Is it possible to have the following mappings: www.example.com = 3rd party hosting blog.example.com = other 3rd party hosting mail.example.com = Google Mail docs.example.com = Google Docs sites.example.com = Google Sites sites.example.com/internal-site = Google Sites internal site ... Right now in TotalDNS, I have www = ghs.google.com. If I modify only this record to point to the IP provided by the 3rd party hosting, is it going to work ? Do I also need to add NameServers, remove the ones Google added ? Thx for the help

  I have multiple servers in WEB cluster (identical configuration for all of them, despite the IP) How do you deploy changes in configs on multile servers? I make the new config, then create config per every server (placing correct IP), and next: upload them on every server, replacing old ones (rsync over ssh) set on every server a job which reloads webserver at the same time (servers use ntp). - this done by issuing commands by script (to save time for logging in) before adding a job for server reload - there's checksum test of the config on the server) - an a notification in case of fail How do you see such method? What should be the "professional way :) ? (I don't say my way doesn't work... it works and saves my time not used for logging on every webserver.) Regards,

• Upgrading MacBookPro

  I'm using a Late 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an Intel i5 @ 2.4 GHz and 4 GB 1333 MHz ram. The computer has started to get older. I was going to upgrade the ram but since Mavericks come out, the ram problem just went away and now, it started to get slower and slower. So I was thinking of upgrading my ram to at least 8GB and my CPU. I have two question about that. As I have 1333Mhz rams installed by default, the motherboard should not support 1666Mhz rams. But can I use 1666 Mhz ones and if I can will it make any difference? Also is it possible to upgrade the CPU of my computer? If yes how can I find a CPU compatible with the other components?

• How to make TortoiseHg pull certain branch only?

  I have cloned the default branch of a big repository and now I wish to pull from the server using the TortoiseHg client. However, TortoiseHg proposes to pull from all the branches. Is it possible to instruct it to pull from the current branch only? So far I have seen suggestions to: Setup a hook on the client side to reject pulls from unwanted branches Check incoming revisions in TortoiseHg and only pull the ones belonging to the current branch Use the Mercurial ACL extension to deny access to all the branches, but the current one. I dislike all of these solutions, since all of them are client based. In all of them TortoiseHg actually pulls all of the branches (even in the second, where the pulled revisions are arranged into a bundle presented in the incoming revisions view) Is there an hg pull -b BRANCH equivalent in TortoiseHg? Thanks. EDIT I know how to do all of this using the Mercurial command line client - hg.exe. This question is specifically about the TortoiseHg GUI client.

• PCs with Wired Connection Keep Losing Internet Connectivity

  I have a U-verse ATT DSL Internet at our church building. Recently, any computer that is plugged into the network via Ethernet keeps losing its internet connectivity. The setup is from the Modem to a Netgear Wireless Router, and from the router to 3 different computers. None of the laptops that use Wifi ever lose internet, just the wired ones, and I end up having to do ipconfig /release and /renew every day to get it back. One computer has Windows 7 and one has Windows XP. Any ideas as to what is going on with our network?

• File permissions to run mysqld in chroot

  I'm trying to run mysqld inside chroot environment. Herez the situation. When I run mysqld as root, I can connect to my databases. But when I run mysql using init.d scripts, mysql gives me an error. $ mysql --user=root --password=password ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (111) So I guess, I need to change file permissions of some files. But which ones? Oh and in case you are wondering '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' is owned by 'mysql' user. • Audio switch with multiple 3.5mm input & outputs

  I've been searching for a device that simple allows me to pick one input and one output from multiple input/outputs. I thought this would be a called a switch but I can only find ones with one input. Is there such a device that can do this? I will be attaching various devices, i.e. multiple console sound, PC & Laptop inputs and outputting to my speakers or headphones. I'm looking for something small and simple. • Which ports for IPSEC/LT2P?

  I have a firewall/router (not doing NAT). I've googled and seen conflicting answers. It seems UDP 500 is the common one. But the others are confusing. 1701, 4500. And some say I need to also allow gre 50, or 47, or 50 & 51. Ok, which ports are the correct ones for IPSec/L2TP to work in a routed environment without NAT? i.e. I want to use the built in windows client to connect to a VPN behind this router/firewall.

• ftp users configuration in OpenSuse 12

  I usually work with MacOSX servers but this time I need to set up a ftp service on a OpenSuse 12.2 server and I am a little lost. I am using the remote YAST2 tool via ssh. I created several users who can connect via ssh and/or ftp, so the basic setup is ok. But when connecting via ftp all my users don't have write permissions. The FTP directory for authenticated users is /srv/www/htdocs, which has permissions root:root. The OpenSuse manual say it's bad practice to change these permissions, but my normal users (even the ones in the sudoers list) cannot upload files. So I am stuck: as a workaround I use rsync, but from time to time I just need to establish a working ftp connection. What's the right approach for users permissions in this scenario? Thanks a lot.

• Computer crashes and freezes a lot

  My computer crashes like it freezes sometimes but sometimes it jumps to a black screen which I can do nothing about other than restart. I tested if it has anything to do with the programs I normally run or with the ones I installed, but it's a long time I have the problem and I think it also happened in the beginning that I bought this computer. To make sure, I normally run skype and Spiral Knights and some animation softwares like Flash. The specs are: Nvidia geforce gtx 560 evga Asus p8H67-m evo motherboard 16 gb ram Intel i7 What can I do about it? What issue is more probable to cause the problem?
