  • How can I write a makefile to auto-detect and parallelize the build with GNU Make?

    Not sure if this is possible in one Makefile alone, but I was hoping to write a Makefile in a way such that trying to build any target in the file auto-magically detects the number of processors on the current system and builds the target in parallel for the number of processors. Something like the below "pseudo-code" examples, but much cleaner? all: @make -j$(NUM_PROCESSORS) all Or: all: .inparallel ... build all here ... .inparallel: @make -j$(NUM_PROCESSORS) $(ORIGINAL_TARGET) In both cases, all you would have to type is: % make all Hopefully that makes sense.

  • A good web 'desktop' JavaScript, CSS, or both, library that likes ASP.NET Web Forms

    I've come across, in passing, several suites of functions, widgets, frameworks, etc. that seek to produce a desktop like experience on the web. Most are JavaScript and CSS tools that handle web content on an emulation of the desktop-paradigmed UI, e.g. TreeView + Content == Explorer. Is there such a library nicely compatible with ASP.NET Forms without weeks of grief? I'll also settle for something similar, but instead of native ASP.NET, a library for any of the open source CMS products for ASP.NET. (Umbraco is at the top of my list, followed by mojoPortal. I aspire to the level of coding their creators easily demonstrate in the product. [PS, I don't want a 'desktop' ux per se, just light and simple dynamic layout for drag 'n drop, dock windows, a dock bar?.. and other fancy magic.

  • C++ STL library in XCode - memset not defined in this scope

    I am trying to create a STL based C++ library in XCode with a bunch of C++ files that I have. Basically my end output should be a shared library (dylib) that can be consumed by a Objective-C application. When trying to compile, I get the following error.. 'memset' was not declared in scope. Since my codebase uses a lot of external 3rd party codebases, I thought i'll include or to resolve this, but I tried both and even that didn't work. Does it have something to do with the SDK? Am currently running 10.5 with GCC 4.2 Need help with setting up the Target properly. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Categories in static library for iPhone device 3.0

    I have categories in my static library. Any application developer should set -ObjC flag to "Other Linker Flags" to use my static library properly. It works fine for iPhone device/iPhone Simulator 2.x and iPhone Simulator 3.0. But it crashes for iPhone device 3.0. As written in this article it is new linker bug. They suggest to use one more linker flag: -all_load. But when I add this flag, build fails too, because there are duplicate symbols. How to use categories in static libraries for iPhone device 3.0? Any suggestions?

  • No speed-up with useless printf's using OpenMP

    I just wrote my first OpenMP program that parallelizes a simple for loop. I ran the code on my dual core machine and saw some speed up when going from 1 thread to 2 threads. However, I ran the same code on a school linux server and saw no speed-up. After trying different things, I finally realized that removing some useless printf statements caused the code to have significant speed-up. Below is the main part of the code that I parallelized: #pragma omp parallel for private(i) for(i = 2; i <= n; i++) { printf("useless statement"); prime[i-2] = is_prime(i); } I guess that the implementation of printf has significant overhead that OpenMP must be duplicating with each thread. What causes this overhead and why can OpenMP not overcome it?

    Hi, I get the following problem with some openssl (yeah, I know it's poorly documented, but I wish to use it any way) code in a project of mine (written in c, on osx and tested in ubuntu): Undefined symbols: "_BIO_new_socket", referenced from: _main in ccG3cvyw.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I did have SSL library problems aswel, because I forgot to link my program to the openssl libraries. The above undefined still stands though. My compile line is: gcc -o test_app test_app.c -lssl Versions I use: (GCC) 4.2.1 OpenSSL 0.9.8l 5 Nov 2009 I'm fairly certain it's a (linked) library issue, as the SSL function SSL_set_bio() works (as in does not produce a build error). Any clue is very much appreciated :) Chuck

    Hello, I am looking for a python library that would allow me to compute stochastic calculus stuff, like the (conditional) expectation of a random process I would define the diffusion. I had a look a at simpy (simpy.sourceforge.net), but it does not seem to cover my needs. This is for quick prototyping and experimentation. In java, I used with some success the (now inactive) http://martingale.berlios.de/Martingale.html library. The problem is not difficult in itself, but there is a lot non trivial, boilerplate things to do (efficient memory use, variable reduction techniques, and so on).     Is there a simple library for .NET that has a simply API that let's you do something like; // pseudo-code List<Webcam> cams = Webcam.GetAll(); Image i = cams[0].GrabImage(); I've looked at DirectShow and WIA, both seem to be much more complicated than this. I've also looked at this CodeProject project, but it really is much more complicated than what I need. The library should support image grabbing and video grabbing, and preferably live streaming of video. Edit: It is preferable if it is free (or at least very cheap), as this is a hobby project.

    I'm creating class library with some commonly used classes like persons, addresses etc. This library will be used in an multilingual application, and I am looking for the most convenient way to represent a persons gender. Ideally I would like to be able to code like this: Person person = new Person { Gender = Genders.Male, FirstName = "Nice", LastName = "Dude" } if (person.Gender == Genders.Male) Console.WriteLine("person is Male"); Console.WriteLine(person.Gender); //Should output: Male Console.WriteLine(person.Gender.ToString("da-DK")); //Should output the name of the gender in the language provided List<Gender> genders = Genders.GetAll(); foreach(Gender gender in genders) { Console.WriteLine(gender.ToString()); Console.WriteLine(gender.ToString("da-DK")); } What would you do?     I'm trying to unzip a file, using DotNetZip Library. The file contains folders and files with danish characters (æøåÆØÅ). TotalCommander, 7Zip, Windows own zip all extract the files correctly, but DotNetZip Library mangles the danish characters. Ex: File_æøåÆØÅ.txt becomes File_æ¢åÆ¥Å.txt insted of aø it contains a ¢. insted of a Ø it contains a ¥. Code: using (var zipFile = ZipFile.Read(@"File_æøåÆØÅ.zip")) { zipFile.ExtractAll(@"File_æøåÆØÅ", ExtractExistingFileAction.OverwriteSilently); } I'm using the default encoding("da-DK" culture), I have tried other encodings like UTF8 etc. How can I unzip a file containing filenames with Danish characters?

  • Using the Facebook Graph APIs PHP library

    I am using the PHP library for the Graph API (http://github.com/facebook/php-sdk) but am a bit confused about how it is all working (or not). I just want to authenticate the user and get the user ID back. What I really want to know is what to do once the user has logged in to Facebook and returned to my site. There is data called 'session' in the URL. Does this need to be stored in order to continually get the user ID? It is really not apparent, to me, from the samples or (lack of) documentation. Also, would it be easier to just cut out the PHP library altogether and just handle the reponse myself, storing it in a session variable. If i were to do this, what is the best method of getting/extracting the current users ID?

  • object won't die (still references to it that I can't find)

    I'm using parallel-python and start a new job server in a function. after the functions ends it still exists even though I didn't return it out of the function (I used weakref to test this). I guess there's still some references to this object somewhere. My two theories: It starts threads and it logs to root logger. My questions: can I somehow findout in which namespace there is still a reference to this object. I have the weakref reference. Does anyone know how to detach a logger?   • How To: Referencing LAPACK library from FORTRAN 95 in Cygwin

    I have a FORTRAN 95 program that needs to make some calls to the LAPACK library. I recently found out that Cygwin because it can install LAPACK as an extra option. Well, LAPACK exists in the /lib/lapack/ directory as "cyglapack.dll". Having only a very informal training in Fortran programming, I have no idea how to reference a .dll library as opposed to a .mod module. Any suggestions or directions to articles answering my question are GREATLY appreciated! (P.S. I did search first.. I don't think I know the proper terms to get a useful article.)

  • Running Awk command on a cluster

    How do you execute a Unix shell command (awk script, a pipe etc) on a cluster in parallel (step 1) and collect the results back to a central node (step 2) Hadoop seems to be a huge overkill with its 600k LOC and its performance is terrible (takes minutes just to initialize the job) i don't need shared memory, or - something like MPI/openMP as i dont need to synchronize or share anything, don't need a distributed VM or anything as complex Google's SawZall seems to work only with Google proprietary MapReduce API some distributed shell packages i found failed to compile, but there must be a simple way to run a data-centric batch job on a cluster, something as close as possible to native OS, may be using unix RPC calls i liked rsync simplicity but it seem to update remote notes sequentially, and you cant use it for executing scripts as afar as i know switching to Plan 9 or some other network oriented OS looks like another overkill i'm looking for a simple, distributed way to run awk scripts or similar - as close as possible to data with a minimal initialization overhead, in a nothing-shared, nothing-synchronized fashion Thanks Alex
