• Windows 8 - no internet connetction to some hosts while VPN is active

  I use VPN to access the servers at work. When VPN is used, all network traffic to the Internet passes through my company network. It worked without any problems on Windows 7, now on Windows 8 some sites suddenly became inaccessible. Please note - I don't try to connect them over RDP, they are public Internet addresses, outside company network. They are inaccessible using any protocol. Ping returns "General failure.". I know it could be a misconfiguration on my company's server side, but it's very strange, since the same VPN connection used on Windows 7 works properly. What's wrong? Is it a Windows 8 bug, or is there something I could do on my company servers to make VPN work as expected with Windows 8? My company network works on Windows Server 2008 R2 and uses Microsoft TMG firewall. I couldn't find any rules blocking the traffic to mentioned sites, all network traffic for VPN users are passed through for all IPs and protocols. Any clues? UDPATE: Important - one whole day it worked. I hibernated and restarted the computer, connected and disconnected VPN - nothing could break my connection. Today it broke again, and restarting Windows didn't help. And now the solution: route add -p 0.0.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.255 192.168.1.1 Oh, OK, I know what it did, added my default gateway to routing table. But it still didn't work sometimes. So I removed my main network gateway route with: route delete -p 0.0.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.0 192.168.0.1 And added modified with: route add -p 0.0.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.255 192.168.0.1 And it works. Now. But I don't trust this. I don't know what really happened.

  Above is the LINQ to SQL designer view for my data context. Is there a way to generate accessor methods for the subclasses as shown in the inheritance mapping above (Project, Task, etc...) without doing it manually? I added them manually but then a change in the designer overwrites any manual changes. Am i doing this wrong? should I not be making accessors for the sub classes? filtering from ActivityBase seems worse to me. Thanks for any help on this.

• UITableView, force to snap to whole UITableViewCell at top of table

  I have a need to make a UITableView only display whole cells at the top of the cell, so when the table is moved or scrolled it should animate to make a whole cell visible at the top of the table if it has happened to stop with a cell partially off the top. This can be easily done using visibleCells and scrollToRowAtIndexPath methods of UITableView, BUT the cell should not always scroll down to move the partial cell into view - if the cell at top is more than 50% gone it should go completely with the next cell (i.e. index 1 in the array returned by visibleCells) moving to the top of the table. I've tried a few things to make this happen but I don't think I am understanding the way frame and bounds work between a UITableView and its UITableViewCells. Any help?

Due to company policy, we encrypted SSN using a symmetric key (chosen over asymmetric key due to performance reasons) using a password. Here is a partial LIKE search on SSN declare @SSN varchar(11) set @SSN = '111-22-%' open symmetric key SSN_KEY decrypt by password = 'secret' select Client_ID from tblClient (nolock) where convert(nvarchar(11), DECRYPTBYKEY(SSN)) like @SSN close symmetric key SSN_KEY Before encryption, searching thru 150,000 records took less than 1 second. but with the mix of decryption, the same search takes around 5 seconds. What strategy can I apply to try to optimize searching thru encrypted column?

• C# - Determine if class initializaion causes infinite recursion?

  I am working on porting a VB6 application to C# (Winforms 3.5) and while doing so I'm trying to break up the functionality into various classes (ie database class, data validation class, string manipulation class). Right now when I attempt to run the program in Debug mode the program pauses and then crashes with a StackOverFlowException. VS 2008 suggests a infinite recursion cause. I have been trying to trace what might be causing this recursion and right now my only hypothesis is that class initializations (which I do in the header(?) of each class). My thought is this: mainForm initializes classA classA initializes classB classB initializes classA .... Does this make sense or should I be looking elsewhere? • Need Help on a custom HTML Helper

  I'm trying to create a custom HTML Helper to help simplify my masterpages menu, however it is not rendering on the HTML when I use it.. I'm thinking I will need to create a partial view, any ideas?   Hi I am using Ajaxy Call to load the partial view. It is working fine in Firefox and IE without in Debug Mode.   OK, I'm probably just having a bad Monday, but I have the following need and I'm seeing lots of partial solutions but I'm sure I'm not the first person to need this, so I'm wondering if I'm missing the obvious. $client has 50 to 500 bytes worth of binary data that must be inserted into the middle of a URL and roundtrip to their customer's browser. Since it's part of the URL, we're up against the 1K "theoretical" limit of a GET URL. Also, $client doesn't want their customer decoding the data, or tampering with it without detection. $client would also prefer not to store anything server-side, so this must be completely standalone. Must be Perl code, and fast, in both encoding and decoding. I think the last step can be base64. But what are the steps for encryption and hashing that make the most sense?

  I'm probably just doing this wrong, i know. i'm using custom serialization and when the xml is generated it's putting the class name as the root element Example: <MyClassName> <MyIntendedRootNode> <ObjectType> <Property1/> <Property2/> ... I'm inoking the serialization by calling xmlserializer.Serialize(writer,Me) so i'm sure that has something to do with it. I've tried putting XMLRoot onto the class, but i think as vb is compiling this partial class with it's aspx page, it's either overwriting this property or ignoring it entirely. ideally i'd like to just tell it to either throw away everything it has and use a different root element.   Because of the place I work has some real issues (people) especially in IT and the owner, I wonder if we are being sniffed. Is there any way to tell if on a Vista 64-bit machine: 1) In system logs some identification that would tell me that someone might log into my PC such as an Admin 2) Something in the logs that would give me a flag about maybe I'm being monitored some other way? 3) How can I be sure that my gmail, hotmail, and chat is not being sniffed. I know there are things like Simp, etc. I'm talking about specific hidden system signs either in registry or logs. Obviously I'm not going to raise any suspicion by me asking our network admin. I don't trust anyone at this company. is there a good way to basically monitor for this as an end user? Could someone log in and basically watch me work and if so, would there be any goodies left behind for me to find out if this has happened other than visual signs which would not be present...maybe some running processes?

  On a form (F1) i have a button, from which if i create another form (lets call it F2) and show it there's no problem but i'd like to do something like this Some thread in my app is running a connection and listens for messages from a server. when a message arrives, my main form is registered to get an event that runs a function. • Updatepanel refresh messing up JqueryUI in IE7

  Hey everyone, This is a bit of a long shot as I don't have access to the code at the moment. However, there's nothing 'special' about the code. I'm using a combination of JqueryUI and ASP.NET UpdatePanels. If I click any of the trigger controls (asp.net button), the partial-postbacks are fine. However, if I click on a trigger control after clicking on a JQueryUI button, then the entire layout messes up and a lot of the content moves upwards. I can just about reach a JQueryUI button, and when I click that, the layout returns to normal and everything's fine until I click the trigger control again. The page works fine in all latest browsers, but this problem appears in IE 7. I hope maybe someone has come across a similar problem in IE 7 and found a workaround/solution. I've been trying to fix it for a couple of days, but no luck. Thanks for any advice.

  I need to specify a different location for my settings file. After many long hours of searching, I found out that I have to write my own SettingsProvider. I succeeded in creating one which allows me to specify a path for settings file via its constructor. Programatically, I can contruct it like this: var mycustomprovider = new CustomSettingsProvider(path); The problem I am having is that there's no way to invoke my custom provider. I can decorate the VS 2008 generated setting file with the following attribute: [SettingsProvider(typeof(CustomSettingProviders.CustomSettingsProvider))] internal sealed partial class Settings { } However, the attribute doesn't allow me to construct the object with a path. Also, I want to be able to set the SettingsProvider programmatically so that I can pass in any path I want at runtime and save my settings. The examples I've seen on the net have never mentioned how to use a invoke a SettingsProvider programmatically.

• AJAX ModalPopup Pops Behind (Under) Page Content (Negative z-index)

  I am having an issue with the AJAX ModalPopupExtender in version 40412 of the AJAX Control Toolkit (http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/43475). The first time the ModalPopup is made visible it works correctly. The z-index is set to 6001 (and the background Div's z-index is set to 6000) and the Popup appears above everything else. If the cancel button within the ModalPopup is clicked, it also has the correct functionality, the display is set to "none" and the ModalPopup is no longer visible. However, when the Popup is triggered again, the z-index is only set to 2000 which is still visible above everything else, but if it is canceled and triggered again it is set to -2000 which is not visible (the z-index is decreasing by 4000 each time). I'm not sure why this is happening. Any ideas how to fix it? Special circumstances: There are multiple ModalPopup's on the page. All ModalPopups are triggered in code-behind through partial-page postbacks (using the .Show() method) ModalPopupExtenders are within the same UpdatePanels that are displayed as popups
