  I'm making a small social networking web site for a specific university's students (where I study) and I'm concerned about security (access to the database). What should I do? What I have to check for last time until I went online? (Yeah, Facebook Facebook. Facebook don't have that community sense. You cannot find all your department mates on Facebook. You cannot see all foreign students on Facebook. • Swap is not copied back into physical memory

  I have a question regarding swap and physical memory. Often times I run a program that requires a lot of memory and as a result I can see some of the data is copied from the physical memory into swap. However, once the program is terminated, and the physical memory is freed I can still see a considerable amount of data on swap which significantly slows down the system and is annoying! What is the reason behind this and how does the OS decide which part of data should go to swap? How long is this data supposed to be there and how is it "freed"?

• What is a light-weight "slideshow" script that could integrate w/ CMS?

  I'm looking to reduce the footprint of my Strict html 4.01 front page. One possible way is to combine much of the "upcoming events" into a single small box, and have them automagically switch which one is displayed every few seconds. I'm sure there are a bunch of this kind of thing written already, and surely an open source one exists, but I haven't had much luck find one. I'd prefer javascript to jQuery as installing jQuery might not be an option, but if the best-fit script requires jQuery I'd certainly be willing to investigate that route. If it can display content from Wordpress that would be ideal.

  We're trying to come up with terms that better describe our bugs/defects. To us, the term 'bug' or 'defect' is too generic and doesn't accurately reflect what is happening. For example, instead of saying that there is a bug (in the general sense), we'd rather say what type of bug (an error, or enhancement, or improvement, etc.). • How should compound words be handled when coding? Is there a definitive list of compound words? [closed]

  QUESTION: How should you handle compound words when programming? Are there any good lists available online for developers of generally accepted technology-related compound words? I can see how this is highly ambiguous, so should I just use common-sense? EXAMPLE: I would be inclined to do this: filename NOT FileName or login NOT LogIn However, the microsoft documentation indicates that filename is not compound. So I wonder, is there a more definitive source? See also, this english.stackexchange discussion on filename. • Protecting design ideas from being copied by other websites?

  Hi everyone, I'm planning a project at the moment, while building a completely different project at the same time. Both of these projects are quite innovative in the way they either work or the way they are presented. One of the projects hasn't been done before, and the other is being made has competition, but I feel the competitions websites are light years behind what I'm doing. Is there a way for me to prevent the way my sites work or presented from being stolen? I've thought of patenting parts of them, but it requires £10,000 and I don't have that amount of money. Also, would me putting a Copyright notice on the site or an All Rights Reserved tag give me any muscle when going to websites that I feel have stolen my ideas (if they have)? Cheers!

• Why does Linux/Ubuntu have an unorganised install solution?

  I started using Windows 7 again to play some of my games I had been missing and I have to say I've been relieved to be reintroduced to the standard installation area "Program Files". From what I've noticed on almost every Linux distribution there is like 5 different areas where games/programs or other odds and ends end up. When you install something, I feel as though you pretty much have to guess where it installed at. Which honestly don't make any sense to me. So my question is, why does it appear as though there is no standard on Linux/Ubuntu? I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I just want to understand the reasons behind it.

• What is the most complicated data structure you have used in a practical situation?

  The germ for this question came up from a discussion I was having with couple of fellow developers from the industry. Turns out that in a lot of places project managers are wary about complex data structures, and generally insist on whatever exists out-of-the-box from standard library/packages. The general idea seems to be like use a combination of whats already available unless performance is seriously impeded. This helps keeping the code base simple, which to the non-diplomatic would mean "we have high attrition, and newer ones we hire may not be that good". So no bloom filter or skip-lists or splay trees for you CS junkies. So here's the question (again): Whats the most complicated data structure you did or used in office? Helps get a sense of how good/sophisticated real world software are.

  I've seen that there are lots of custom keyboards for Android, but all are QWERTY keyboards. I couldn't find any keyboard with T9 layout. Is this because T9 is patented and the QWERTY layout is not? So if I made a T9 keyboard, I would have to pay patent fees? So what does the patent protect when you look at T9? Only the layout? Or the prediction engine? The problem is, this way of predicting words is the only one that makes sense for this layout ...

• How can i fit 2 commands in 1 terminal shortcut

  10 latest updates and drivers and I need to run a game called unreal tournament, but in terminal it requires 2 commands The first one is to mount into the folder: cd /usr/local/games/ut2004/ and then the second one is to open the actual game: sudo aoss ./ut2004 In one shortcut i can only fit 1 command but both don't fit in is there any way i can turn these 2 commands into one? Perhaps turni9ng on the desktop shortcut already mounted into the folder? Any help would be really appreciated because im getting kinda sick of using the terminal to run it every time.

I understand the main language for Xcode is Objective-C. Am I hurting myself by learning C++ before any other language (notably before my desired lang Objective-C)?   What layout of resume works best for experienced programmers? Currently my layout is: Contact Details Focus (goal) Technical Skills Professional Experience (Responsibilities + achievements at each job) Education Interests I feel my current layout uses up too much valuable space. Most of the online templates feel like junior Resumes with emphasis on education so I am not sure how I can improve it. I wonder how many hiring managers actually care about goal/objective? To me it looks useless. Also, is it necessary to have summary of technical skills/technologies? If so, would it not make more sense for it to be mentioned later in the Resume rather then at the top? Finally, do you have separate section for achievements? Many thanks.

• Looking for the better way to combine deep architecture refactoring with feature based development

  Problem statement: Given: TFS as Source Control Heavy desktop client application with tons of legacy code with bad or almost absent architecture design. Clients constantly requiring new features with sound quality, fast delivery and constantly complaining on user unfriendly UI. Problem: Application undoubtedly requires deep refactoring. This process inevitably makes application unstable and dedicated stabilization phase is needed. We've tried: Refactoring in master with periodical merges from master (MB) to feature branch (FB). (my mistake) Result: Many unstable branches. What we are advised: Create additional branch for refactoring (RB) periodically synchronizing it with MB via merge from MB to RB. After RB is stabilized we substitute master with RB and create new branch for further refactoring. This is the plan. But here I expect the real hell of merging MB to RB after merging any FB to MB. The main advantage: Stable master most of the time. Are there any better alternatives to the procees?

  i want to develop an AI opponent for the Board Game Monopoly. I want to implement the whole Game with Prolog (XPCE). The probability for a field on the Board being hit, can be computed with Markov Chains. I already know some "best practices" like "after 50% of the playing time it does not make sense to buy out of jail because in jail you get renting fees for your fields but you don't have to pay for other fields as long as you stay in prison". The interesting question always is: buy a streetfield ? buy houses / hotels ? how much ? so i think i would have to compute some kind of future liquidity .. does anyone know how to pack that into an algorithm or how to translate it to prolog ?

• When should an API favour optimization over readability and ease-of-use?

  I am in the process of designing a small library, where one of my design goals is to use as much of the native domain language as possible in the API. While doing so, I've noticed that there are some cases in the API outline where a more intuitive, readable attribute/method call requires some functionally unnecessary encapsulation. Since the final product will not necessarily require high performance, I am unconcerned about making the decision to favour ease-of-use in my current project over the most efficient implementation of the code in question. I know not to assume readability and ease-of-use are paramount in all expected use-cases, such as when performance is required. I would like to know if there are more general reasons that argue for an API design preferring (marginally) more efficient implementations?

• Issue in Webscrapping in C# : Downloading and parsing zipped text files

  I am writing an webscrapper, to do the download content from a website. Traversing to the website/URL, triggers the creation of a temporary URL. This new URL has a zipped text file. This zipped file is to be downloaded and parsed. I have written a scrapper in C# using WebClient and its function - DownloadFileAsync(). The zipped file is read from the designated location on a trapped DownloadFileCompleted event. My issue : The Windows 'Open/Save dialog is triggered". This requires user input and the automation is disrupted. Can you suggest a way to bypass the issue ? I am cool with rewriting the code using any alternate libraries. :) Thanks for reading,

• HTTP(S) based file server

  I've got a server running Ubuntu 10.04. I've already gotten openssh for ssh and sftp on it. I've been looking for a web-based (http, or preferably https) file server, perhaps a web-front-end to an (S)FTP server, that allows access to a specific folder, and also allows uploads. It requires user authentication, preferably using PAM. This web-based solution is for users that are not allowed to use FTP software / browser extension and don't have flash / java browser plugins within their corporate environments. So far I have looked into: Webmin: Includes a file manager, however it uses Java, and I'm looking for a plugin-free implementation. Apache2: I was able to set up https and PAM authentication, but the barebone implementation doesn't include file upload (as far as I'm aware of). HFS: Haven't tried it out because it is for Windows/wine only, and I don't want to run it under wine.

• PyQt design issues

  I've been working on a my first real project using PyQt lately. I've done just a little bit of work in Qt for C++ but nothing more than just messing around. I've found that the Qt python bindings are essentially just a straight port of C++ classes into python, which makes sense. The issue is that this creates a lot of messy, unpythonic code. For example if you look at QAbstractItemModel, there's a lot of hoops you have to go through that forces you to hide the actual python. I was just wondering if there's any intention of writing a python implementation of Qt that isn't necessarily just a wrapper? Either by Nokia or anyone else? I really like Qt but I would love to be able to write more pythonic code. I hope this is OK to ask here. I'm not trying to start a GUI war or anything.

• Architecture - 32-bit handling 64-bit instructions

But CPU op-mode(s) are 32-bit and 64-bit. The question is: how come? How is it handled that a 32-bit processor performs 64-bit operations? I guess it's a lot slower than native 32-bit operations. Is it built-in processor functionality (to emulate being 64-bit) or is it software dependent? When does it make sense for a 32-bit processor to run 64-bit operations?

• How can I have a Bluetooth Keyboard Auto-Connect at Startup?

  I have a bluetooth keyboard for my HTPC. I pair it with my computer via bluetooth, and it works fine. However, when I turn off the keyboard or my computer, it has to connect again (which requires me entering a passcode on the computer and keyboard) when I turn them back on. I've looked through many forums and through that I have found that I'm missing some seemingly vital bluetooth files: /etc/default/bluetooth /etc/init.d/bluetooth /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf In the instructions that I've found online so far, I must change certain lines in any of these files. I am unable to, since they do not exist. Am I missing a dependency or something? I've also tried installing Blueman but that didn't help at all. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick).   Is there any design pattern or practice recommended for business layer when dealing with multiple API version. For example, I have something like this. http://site.com/blogs/v1/?count=10 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs(int count) to get information http://site.com/blogs/v2/?blog_count=20 which calls business object method GetAllBlogs_v2(int blogCounts) Since parameter name is changed, I created another business method for version 2. This is just one example but it could have other breaking changes for which it requires me to create another method to support both version. Is there any design pattern or best practice for business/data access layer I should follow when supporting API Versioning?

• Why Java as a First Language?

  Why is Java so popular as a first language to teach beginners? To me it seems like a terrible choice: It's statically typed. Static typing isn't useful unless you care a lot about either performance or scaling to large projects. It requires tons of boilerplate to get the simplest code up and running. Try explaining "Hello, world" to someone who's never programmed before. It only handles the middle levels of abstraction well and is single-paradigm, thus leaving out a lot of important concepts. You can't program at a very low level (pointers, manual memory management) or a very high level, (metaprogramming, macros) in it. In general, Java's biggest strength (i.e. the reason people use it despite the shortcomings of the language per se) is its libraries and tool support, which is probably the least important attribute for a beginner language. In fact, while useful in the real world these may negatives from a pedagogical perspective as they can discourage learning to write code from scratch.
