• Should Professional Development occur on company time?

  As a first-time part-time software developer at a small consulting company, I'm struggling to organise time to further my own software development knowledge - whether that's reading a book, keeping up with the popular questions on StackOverflow, researching a technology we're using in-depth, or following the front page of Hacker News. I can see results borne from my self-allocated study time, but listing and demonstrating the skills and knowledge gained through Professional Development is difficult. The company does not have any defined PD policy, and there's a lot of pressure to get something deliverable done now! when working for consultants. I've checked what my coworkers do, and they don't appear to allocate any time to self-improvement; they just work at the problems they're given, looking up specific MSDN references, code samples, and the like as they need them. I realise that PD policy is going to vary across companies of different size and culture, and a company like my own is probably a bit of an edge case. I'd love to hear views and experiences from more seasoned developers; especially those who have to make the PD policy choices in their team or company. I'd also like to learn about the more radical approaches to PD, even if they're completely out there; it's always interesting to see what other people are trying. Not quite a summary, but what I'm trying to ask: Is it common or recommended for companies to allocate PD time? Whose responsibility is it to ensure a developer's knowledge and skills are up to date? Should a part-time work schedule inspire a lower ratio of PD time : work? How can a developer show non-developer coworkers that reading blogs and books is net productive? Is reading blogs and books actually net productive? (references welcomed) Is writing blogs effective as a way of PD? (a recent theme on Hacker News) This is sort of a broad question because I don't know exactly which questions I need to ask here, so any thoughts on relevant issues I haven't addressed are very welcome.

• What are the best Microsoft Certifications to start with?

  Background I have a bachelors in math and a certification. in C++ from 2007. Since then I've spent a lot of time working with python, C#, and started going through the ASP.NET certification materials. I'm starting to realize that the certification is going to take longer than anticipated and I'm not sure I want to spend the next 4-5 months studying before I have it completed. Most of resume shows teaching/tutoring experience with some low-level administration thrown in. Question If I want to get any programming position, which certifications would be best to start with? What would be the quickest and easiest to obtain, yet represent value for my employer? Are certifications even the way to go? If not, what would you suggest? Update I have several programs that I show off when I can (mostly games), and I'm about 75% through a C# application I hope to have done in the next week. Since most employers simply ask for a resume and not samples, what would be the best way to present the work to them?

• XNA Skinned Animated Mesh Rendering Exported from Maya

  I am working on translating an old RTS game engine I wrote from DirectX9 to XNA. My old models didn't have animation & are an old format, so I'm trying with an FBX file. I temporarily "borrowed" a model from League of Legends just to test if my rendering is working correctly. I imported the mesh/bones/skin/animation into Maya 2012 using an "unnamed" 3rd-party import tool. (obviously I'll have to get legit models later, but I just want to test if my programming is correct). Everything looks correct in maya and it renders the animations flawlessly. I exported everything into a single FBX file (with only a single animation). I then tried to load this model using the example at the following site: http://create.msdn.com/en-US/education/catalog/sample/skinned_model With my exported FBX, the animation looks correct for most of the frames, however at random times it screws up for a split second. Basically, the body/arms/head will look right, but the leg/foot will shoot out to a random point in space for a second & then go back to the normal position. The original FBX from the sample looks correct in my program. It seems odd that my model was imported into maya wrong, since it displays fine in Maya. So, I'm thinking either I'm exporting it wrong, or the sample code is bad & the model from the sample caters to the samples bad code. I'm new to 3D programming & maya, so chances are I'm doing something wrong in the export. I'm using mostly the defaults, but I've tried all 3 interpolation modes (quaternion, euler, resample). • CheckMemoryAllocationGame Sample

  Many times I’ve found myself wondering how much GC memory some operation allocates. This is primarily in the context of XNA games due to the desire to avoid generating garbage and thus triggering a GC collection. Many times I’ve written simple programs to check allocations. I did it again recently. It occurred to me that many XNA developers find themselves asking this question from time to time. So I cleaned up my sample and published it on my website. Feel free to download it and put it to use. It’s rather thoroughly commented. The location where you insert the code you wish to check is in the Update method found in Game1.cs. The default that I put in is a line of code that generates a new Guid using Guid.NewGuid (which, if you’re curious, does not create any heap allocations). Read all of the comments in the Update method (at the very least) to make sure that your code is measured properly. It’s important to make sure that you meaningfully reference any thing you create after the second call to get the memory or else (in Release configuration at least) you will likely get incorrect results. Anyway, it should make sense when you read the comments and if not, feel free to post a comment here or ask me on Twitter. This is not an in-depth look at the capabilities of the architectural tools that shipped with Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but is instead a set of samples that lead you by example through real world scenarios. There is practical guidance and checklists to help guide lead developers and architects through the common challenges in understanding both existing and new applications. The content concentrates on practical guidance for Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and is focused on modelling tools.   One of the interesting features of C# 4.0 is for both named and optional arguments.  They are often very useful together, but are quite actually two different things.  Optional arguments gives us the ability to omit arguments to method invocations. Named arguments allows us to specify the arguments by name instead of by position.  Code using the named parameters are often more readable than code relying on argument position.  These features were long overdue, especially in regards to COM interop. Below, I have included some examples to help you understand them more in depth. Please remember to target the .NET 4 Framework when trying these samples. • Find meeting point of 2 objects in 2D, knowing (constant) speed and slope

  I have a gun which fires a projectile which has to hit an enemy. The problem is that the gun has to be automatic, i.e. - choose the angle in which it has to shoot so that the projectile hits the enemy dead in the center. It's been a looooong time since school, and my physics skills are a bit rusty, but they're there. I've been thinking to somehow apply the v = d/t formula to find the time needed for the projectile or enemy to reach a certain point. But the problem is that I can't find the common point for both the projectile and enemy. Yes, I can find a certain point for the projectile, and another for the enemy, but I would need lots of tries to find where the point coincides, which is stupid. There has to be a way to link them together but I can't figure it out. I prepared some drawings and samples: A simple version of my Flash game, dumbed down to the basics, just some shapes: http://axonnsd.org/W/P001/MathSandBox.swf - click the mouse anywhere to fire a projectile. Or, here is an image which describes my problem: So... who has any ideas about how to find x3/y3 - thus leading me to find the angle in which the weapon has to tilt in order to fire a projectile to meet the enemy? EDIT I think it would be clearer if I also mention that I know: the speed of both Enemy and Projectile and the Enemy travels on a straight vertical line.

• HLSL How to flip geometry horizontally

  I want to flip my asymmetric 3d model horizontally in the vertex shader alongside an arbitrary plane parallel to the YZ plane. This should switch everything for the model from the left hand side to the right hand side (like flipping it in Photoshop). Doing it in pixel shader would be a huge computational cost (extra RT, more fullscreen samples...), so it must be done in the vertex shader. Once more: this is NOT reflection, i need to flip THE WHOLE MODEL. I thought I could simply do the following: Turn off culling. Run the following code in the vertex shader: input.Position = mul(input.Position, World); // World[3][0] holds x value of the model's pivot in the World. if (input.Position.x <= World[3][0]) input.Position.x += World[3][0] - input.Position.x; else input.Position.x -= input.Position.x - World[3][0]; ... The model is never drawn. Where am I wrong? I presume that messes up the index buffer. Can something be done about it? P.S. it's INSANELY HARD to format code here. Thanks to Panda I found my problem. • GCC: assembly listing for IA64 without an Itanium machine

  I need to try the following thing: I would like to compile some simple C code samples and see the assembly listing generated by GCC for IA64 architecture, i.e. I just want to run GCC with the -S switch and see the resultant .s file. I don't have an Itanium machine, so in order to do it myself I'll probably need a cross-compiling version of GCC built for x86 RedHat. I'm not interested in full cross-compilation, meaning that I don't need to generate the binaries at all. The easiest way, of course, would be to find an Itanium machine with with GCC and just try it there. Unfortunately, I don't seem to have access to any. Another option is to build a cross-compiling version GCC on my RedHat, but apparently that's quite an endeavor for someone who hasn't done it before (I assume that the fact that I only need .s output doesn't make it simpler). What other options are there, if any? Maybe there's some sort of a web front to an Itanium GCC compiler on the Net (something like Comeau Online or ideone.com, but with .s output)? Anything else? I would appreciate any help.

This book takes the reader on a 16-chapter long journey towards being a better ASP.NET MVC developer with chapter 16 putting all information covered in practical context by dissecting the implementation of Nuget.org, a real-life open-source, ASP.NET MVC project.  All code samples referenced in this book are conveniently accessible via NuGet, a free, open-source Library package manager that installs as a Visual Studio Extension. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 thoroughly cover MVC’s various components: Controllers “C”, Views “V” and Models “M” respectively. Chapter 5 covers additional extension methods (Helpers) provided to speed and ease the use of common HTML elements such as forms, textboxes, grids, to name a few… Chapter 6 tackles built-in validation while providing examples and use cases on implementing custom validation that plugs into the MVC framework. • Java SE 8 (with JavaFX) Developer Preview Release for ARM

  In an effort to get ARM developers testing Java SE 8 before the scheduled release later this year a Java SE 8 Developer Preview Release for ARM has been made available. This release has been tested on the Raspberry PI but should work on other ARM platforms. In addition to the new Java SE features, this release provides specific support of hard float GPU on the Raspberry PI. The support for hard float GPU has been anticipated by a number of developers. Additionally, this release includes support of an optimized JavaFX. Specific configurations of JDK 8 on ARM are defined below: Java FX is supported on ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) Supported platforms without Java FX: ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) ARM architecture v7 (VFP, little endian) ARM architecture v5 (soft float, little endian) Linux x86 The download page includes setup instructions for a Raspberry PI device as well as demos and samples. Developers are also encouraged to try their own applications as well and to share their stories via the JavaFX or Project Feedback Forums.  If you've got a Raspberry PI or other ARM devices it's time to get started with Java SE 8 Developer Preview release.

• Estimate angle to launch missile, maths question

  I've been working on this for an hour or two now and my maths really isn't my strong suit which is definitely not a good thing for a game programmer but that shouldn't stop me enjoying a hobby surely? After a few failed attempts I was hoping someone else out there could help so here's the situation. I'm trying to implement a bit of faked intelligence when the A.I fires it's missiles at a target in a 2D game world. By predicting the likely position the target will be in given it's current velocity and the time it will take the missile to reach it's target. I created an image to demonstrate my thinking: http://i.imgur.com/SFmU3.png which also contains the logic I use for accelerating the missile after launch. The ship that fires the missile can fire within a total of 40 degree angle, 20 either side of itself, but this could likely become variable. My current attempt was to break the space between the two lines into segments which match the targets width. Then calculate the time it would take the missile to get to that location using the formula. So for each iteration of this we total up the values and that tells us the distance travelled, ad it would then just need compared to distance to the segment. startVelocity * ((startVelocity * acceleration)^(currentframe-1) So for example. If we start at a velocity of 1f/frame with an acceleration of 0.1f the formula, at frame 4, would be 1 * (1.1^3) = 1.331 But I quickly realized I was getting lost when trying to put this into practice. Does this seem like a correct starting point or am I going completely the wrong way about it? Any pointers would help me greatly. Maths really isn't my strong suit so I get easily lost in these matters and don't even really know a good phrase to search for with this. So I guess in summary my question is more about the correct way to approach this problem and any additional code samples on top of that would be great but I'm not averse to working out the complete code from helpful pointers.
