  • Visual studio Solution for two versions of a web application

    The issue at hand is this. We have a web application with two different versions, a full application, and a light version of it. In it's most part the light version is a subset of the full version, which means that it uses the same web pages and references the same binaries with the full version. However, some of the pages of the full version should not be deployed with the light version obviously, and some binaries (libraries etc) need not be deployed with the full version. If it were a windows forms application we could attempt to approach the issue at hand with preprocessor directives, unfortunately this is not feasible I think. (please do correct me if I'm wrong with this) Anyway, what would a good approach on this? Thanks

  • Is ASP.Net State Server an elegant solution?

    We have an ASP.Net MVC project that will start with a single web server but likely soon scale into a small web farm. As ASP.Net Authentication stores a UserID, and data caching may also be useful, we would likely need to make the jump to state server fairly soon. I'd like to hear from others how State Server has been to work with and how it scales from a performance perspective. Alternateively, we could architect it as completely stateless by not using data caching and tracking sessions with an encrypted cookie.

  • Perl - Internal File (create and execute)

    I have a quick question about creating files with perl and executing them. I wanted to know if it was possible to generate a file using perl (I actually need a .bat script) and then execute this file internally to the program. I know I can create files, and I have with perl, however, I'm wanting to do this internally to the program. So, what I want it to do is actually create a batch script internally to the program (no file is actually written to the disk, everything remains in memory, or the perl program), and then once it completes the writing of the file, I'd like to be able to actually execute this file, and then discard the file it just wrote. I'm basically trying to have it create a batch script on the fly, so that I can just have output text files from the output of the script, rather than creating the batch script on disk, then executing it, and then deleting the batch file from disk when its done. Can this be done and how would I go about doing this? Regards, Drew

    Hi, does anybody knows about Java/C# database independent authorization library. This library should support read, write, delete, insert actions across company organizational structure. Something like this: - user can see all documents - user can enter new document assigned to his unit - user can change all documents assigned to his unit and all subordinate units. - user can delete documents that are assigned to him I should also be able to create custom actions (besides read, write,...) connect them to certain class and assign that "security token" to user (e.g. document.expire). If there aren't any either free or commercial libraries, is there a book that could be useful in implementing this functionality? Thanks.

  • Change Check Out Folder for checked out files in SourceSafe

    I had to rebuild my machine and went from XP to Windows 7. I've now got a bit of an issue: I had files checked out in SourceSafe previously, which I still have copies of in the local folder on my new install. However, SourceSafe still has them checked out to the old XP folder (c:\documents and settings etc) whereas the files now reside in c:\Users. Pending Checkins in Visual Studio now thinks I have nothing checked out, and SourceSafe declares that the files are checked out to me under the c:\documents and settings\ path. Is there any way to tell SourceSafe to simply "look over there" for the files instead? It seems to work with individually undoing and redoing checkout on the files, but that's a lengthy process and one I'd like to avoid if possible. If I simply checkout the files individually then it lists them as checked out to me twice, one for each of the locations. Any pointers would be very much appreciated!

    I have a Centos 5 system with Lighttpd and fastcgi enabled. It does log access but does not log errors. I have Internal Server Error 500 and no info in log and when I try to open not -existing file also - no info in error log. How to enable it properly?     I work in a large team, and not everybody has upgraded from VS 2008 to VS 2010, though I have. I have a maintenance bug in a VS 2008 project, and have been told that I cannot upgrade the project file. Is there a way for me to make the changes I need to make within VS10 without upgrading the project (including compiling, using the debugger, etc.), or do I need to re-install VS 2008?

  • Using Django Admin for a custom database solution

    A client wants to have a simple intranet application to manage his process. He runs a Quarry and wishes to track number of loads delivered per day and associated activities. Since I knew about Django's excellent Admin interface, I figured I could define the "Schema" in models.py and have Django Admin generate the forms. I did exactly that and the result is not bad at all. I've been able to customize the look and feel to suit the client's taste. Some questions: Is Django Admin the right choice for such a use-case? Will I run to problems in the future due to flexibility of the framework? Is there a better framework out there specifically designed for this use-case (general Database management for small businesses)? I prefer ones written in Python since I can hack it up to customize.   • Circular Dependency Solution

    Our current project has ran into a circular dependency issue. Our business logic assembly is using classes and static methods from our SharedLibrary assembly. The SharedLibrary contains a whole bunch of helper functions, such as a SQL Reader class, Enumerators, Global Variables, Error Handling, Logging and Validation. The SharedLibrary needs access to the Business objects, but the Business objects need access to SharedLibrary. The old developers solved this obvious code smell by replicating the functionality of the business objects in the shared library (very anti-DRY). I've spent a day now trying to read about my options to solve this but i'm hitting a dead end. I'm open to the idea of architecture redesign, but only as a last resort. So how can i have a Shared Helper Library which can access the business objects, with the business objects still accessing the Shared Helper Library?

  • Disassembling with python - no easy solution?

    Hi, I'm trying to create a python script that will disassemble a binary (a Windows exe to be precise) and analyze its code. I need the ability to take a certain buffer, and extract some sort of struct containing information about the instructions in it. I've worked with libdisasm in C before, and I found it's interface quite intuitive and comfortable. The problem is, its Python interface is available only through SWIG, and I can't get it to compile properly under Windows. At the availability aspect, diStorm provides a nice out-of-the-box interface, but it provides only the Mnemonic of each instruction, and not a binary struct with enumerations defining instruction type and what not. This is quite uncomfortable for my purpose, and will require a lot of what I see as spent time wrapping the interface to make it fit my needs. I've also looked at BeaEngine, which does in fact provide the output I need, a struct with binary info concerning each instruction, but its interface is really odd and counter-intuitive, and it crashes pretty much instantly when provided with wrong arguments. The CTypes sort of ultimate-death-to-your-python crashes. So, I'd be happy to hear about other solutions, which are a little less time consuming than messing around with djgcc or mingw to make SWIGed libdisasm, or writing an OOP wrapper for diStorm. If anyone has some guidance as to how to compile SWIGed libdisasm, or better yet, a compiled binary (pyd or dll+py), I'd love to hear/have it. :) Thanks ahead.

    For some security issues I'm in an envorinment where third party apps can't access my DB. For this reason I should have some service/tool/script (dunno what yet... i'm open to the best option, still reading to see what I'm gonna do...) which enables me to generate on a regular basis(daily, weekly, monthly) some csv file with all new/modified records for a certain application. I should be able to automate this process and also export at any time a new file. So it should keep track for each application which records he still needs. Each application will need some data in some other format (csv/xls/sql), also some fields will be needed for some application and some aren't... It should be fairly flexible... What is the best option for me? Creating some custom tables for each application? Based on that extracting modified data?

    I have a project under which various distributed applications are placed; the whole project is under a single dll. Hence, if any issue occurs we need to re-build the whole application to run or import to our server. I am looking for the best possible way to make the build process faster and also bit worried about the size of the DLL. Is it a good way to have separate dll for all the modules or split the application in multiple projects??? Can, anyone suggest the best way or example to deal with this situation.   • C# Binary File Compare

    I'm in a situation where I want to compare two binary files. One of them is already stored on the server with a pre-calculated Crc32 in the database from when I stored it originally. I know that if the Crc is different then the files are definitely different. However, if the Crc is the same I don't know that the files are. So what I'm looking for is a nice efficient way of comparing the two streams on from the posted file and one from the file system. I'm not an expert on streams but I'm well aware that I could easily shoot myself in the foot here as far as memory usage is concerned. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The question is about how to do real-time GPS tracking system things; if we have the following scenario: Rather than connecting a GPS receiver to a PC, the user will have a mobile device with an integrated GPS receiver. Location data will be sent over mobile network using GPRS data connection to a server side. The data will be processed and a KML path file will be created and updated on time intervals and used to track the user using Google Earth. The question is: what is the best method to accomplish this scenario for the server side; is it a web service, a web application, a windows service, a windows application or what exactly? Taking into account that the system will serve a number of users simultaneously, and that more users may use the system in the future(scalability issues). I wouldn’t say it was completely successful. I know of one other catalog building software called Catalog Builder by Computer Pundits. I'm just looking for any suggestions from someone who might have gone through this process on what software I should use.

    Designing forms has always been fun, but getting them to send email on the server side is another story. I have used various email scripts (dynaform,phpmailer, etc), and have experienced a ton of problems. So here is the site I am working on: Contact On the Right. It is very basic: no validation, no required fields. I simply need anything that is entered to be sent back to me. Does anyone know of any BASIC PHP form processing scripts, or have a few lines of code that would work here? I'm not a PHP guy, so I am struggling! Thanks in advance.
