• Simple script - execute command on selected file

  I want to make a script that will execute .jar file on selected file. Later I will add that script to right-click menu via the tool Nautilus Actions or just place it into nautilus-scripts folder. I have a problem creating script. When I am in a usual console screen and want to execute this jar file on any other file, I use this syntax myfile.jar ./someotherfile.xml and the jar file will write the output to the console screen. So I created a file script.sh, added lines in it #!/bin/bash /home/username/myfile.jar $1 But it does not output anything. I know I am doing something wrong. Please help. To sum, I need a script that will use selected file as a parameter, open the gnome-terminal, inside that terminal it will start JAR file and pass it the selected file. I am confident that this is a very simple procedure, but I am total newbie with shell scripting.

I wanted to rethink on this and need your expert advice and suggestions. • How do I tell my boss he made the wrong choice? [migrated]

  Recently, our biggest product failed majorly because we'd only used outsourced labor to do it, and they never tested anything, etc. Finally, our CEO decided that the US team should learn the code and fix it up. (Not a total rewrite, but lots of formatting/style changes, refactoring, etc). However, he knows next to nothing about programming (thankfully, he admits it). He had been grooming me to take on the project manager position, but I had to go back to college. Now he gave it to another programmer who is naive and inexperienced. I don't feel the naive programmer will do nearly as well. The CEO's reasoning is that the naive programmer can work full time and I can only do part time, so the less senior programmer could put more work into it. How can I convince him that 15 hours of my time is worth more than the other guy's 40?

  My service has a large ongoing number of user events, and we would like to do things like "count occurrence of event type T since date D." We are trying to make two basic decisions: What to store? Storing every event vs. only storing aggregates (Event log style) log every event and count them later, vs. (Time-series style) store a single aggregated "count of event E for date D" for every day Where to store the data In a relational database (particularly MySQL) In a non-relational (NoSQL) database In flat log files (collected centrally over the network via syslog-ng) What is standard practice / where can I read more about comparing the different types of systems? Additional details: The total event stream is large, potentially hundreds of thousands of entries per day But our current need is only to count certain types of events within it We don't necessarily need real-time access to the raw data or aggregation results IMHO, "log all events to files, crawl them at a later time to filter and aggregate the stream" is a pretty standard UNIX Way, but my Rails-y compatriots seem to think that nothing is real unless it's in MySQL.

I'm trying to segment my incoming traffic by page-type such that i can find out what percentage of traffic is going to zip code pages exclusively and what percentage is going to city/state level pages. I basically want to filter by URL structure to find out what percentage of total traffic zip code pages account for. The reason for doing this is to find out if Does Google Tag Manager help with this? • Convincing Upper Management the need of larger monitors for Developers

  The company I work for has recently hired on several developers, and there are a limited number of monitors to go around. There are two types in the office - a standard 15" (thankfully flatscreen) and a widescreen 23". No developer has a machine capable of a dual monitor setup, and the largest monitors went to the people who got here first. Three or four new senior level developers only have a 15" monitor to work on. To make matters worse, there are perhaps a total of 25-30 DBAs/Testers/Admin types in the company who all have dual screen 23" setups. We have brought the issue to management, and they refuse to take away large monitors from people who have been here for years for the sake of new employees, even if they are senior level. We have pitched the idea of testers sacrificing a large monitor for one of our small ones, but they won't go for that either. What can I say to management to illustrate the need of monitors for developers?

• Results stored in a session - good idea?

  To give a bit of background, lets say it's a generic results page, which is paginated so there are X results per page. Generally to do this, I have two queries on the page: to get the total number of results to get the results, limiting by the correct page's resultset However, recently I've been trying to cut down on the queries the site is making, and I thought one way to do this would be to only do the query if any parameters to the page have changed (except of course the page number)? This would then cache all the result id's in a session, which can be sliced when I need to return the correct resultset for that page. I was trying to look around the net to see if there are downsides of this method, but I've found very little information about it. Has anyone done this before? Is it a good idea?

  Situation: I've some scripts that simulate user-activity on desktop. Therefore I've defined a few cases (workflows) and implemented them in Python. I've also written some classes for interacting with the users' software (e.g. web browser etc.). Problem: I'm a total beginner in software design / architecture (coding isn't a problem). How could I structure what I described above? Providing a library which contains all the workflows as functions, or a separate class/module etc. for each workflow? I want to keep the the workflows simple. The complexity should be hidden in the classes for interacting with the users' software. Are there any papers / books I could read about this, or could you provide some tips? Kind regards, B

• Alternatives to sql like databases

  Well i was wondering these days computers usually have 2GB or 4GB memory I like to use some secure client server model, and well an sql database is likely candidate. On the other hand i only have about 8000 records, who will not frequently be read or written in total they would consume less then 16 Megabyte. And it made me wonder what would be good secure options in a windows environment to store the data work with it multi-client single server model, without using SQL or mysql Would for well such a small amount of data maybe other ideas better ? Because i like to keep maintenance as simple as possible (no administrators would need to know sql maintenance, as they dont know databases in my target environment) Maybe storing in xml files or.. something else. Just wonder how others would go if ease of administration is the main goal. Oh and it should be secure to, the client server data must be a bit secure (maybe NTLM files shares https or...etc)

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer, but at the end of the installation it gave me an error and it didn't install grub2. Installing GRUB there could result in FILESYSTEM DESTRUCTION if valuable data is overwritten by grub-setup (--skip-fs-probe disables this check, use at your own risk). • how to modify another user's .profile from the recovery console?

  Pretty much everything is in the title, really! ;) I installed a few components to compile go programs, and the last step was to add the go directory to the path. Being a total ubuntu noob, I added the line PATH="Path/To/Folder", after the one that was already there. After the first reboot I can no longer log into ubuntu (the screen black-out for a while and then I'm back to the login screen, and the same chime greets me.) I've been able to boot in recovery mode, open the root's profile with vi, but I cant find my other user's profile, nor pretty much anything.. Any hint would be greatly appreciated! Pascal

• Unity session goes to lock on app launch, and won't unlock with password

  Has been happening on every Ubuntu machine I've used to date, which is a total of 4. Started in 12.10 as far as I know, but it might have happened with 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, 13.10 and now 14.04. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, but what always seems to trigger it is opening a web browser or some other application first from the sidebar. Firefox was was the most recent trigger. Instead of opening my browser, which it acts like it's going to do... the session locks, goes to the login screen, and won't unlock with the correct password. By 'won't unlock' I mean it unlocks then immediately locks again without first restoring unity, it does not produce 'incorrect password' I suspect this is a virus or password snooping software because of the fact it won't unlock with correct password information and I think if this IS a security issue, it should be fixed asap considering it's widespread throughout multiple versions. It's probably not a virus, but it is certainly suspicious behaviour to see your pc do that... wouldn't you think?

• Where can I find statistics / figures on how long testing should / could take?

  I'm trying to convince management that testing/QA takes considerably longer than non-developers think. Some smaller shops don't have budgets for testers and phbs automatically assume the developer will spend a few minutes after every build "testing" and deliver a perfectly functional system. Can someone point me to some numbers? e.g. Testing should be XX% of your total man hour count , etc etc? Or perhaps some real world experience? My goal is to have some numbers that are grounded in real life so I can make time/effort allocation justifications for "proper" testing when preparing estimates and timelines for applications. Maybe not full blown 100% TDD, but pragmatically close to it. I apologize if I seem vague.

• Reading Partition Start and End in TestDisk

  I'm using TestDisk in an attempt to recover a partition gone terribly awry. Identifying the partition in question should simply be a matter of simply recognizing the location in the disk that it occupies. Since I know the location of the partition in question from GParted, I need to translate that over to the format that TestDisk uses, which I can't quite figure out. GParted gives the First and Last sectors as follows: First Sector: 1708032 Last Sector: 54637719 Total sector: 52929688 Test Disk gives the partitions in the following way: Start: 1691 110 20 End: 4986 39 5 Size in Sectors: 52929688 My question is: how do I translate the location specified in GParted to that in TestDisk?   14.04 / Firefox 29.0 I've been using Bleachbit to clear usage/file history, and for the most part it works great. However, it doesn't seem to clear the website hostnames out of the URL, at all. These addresses are not bookmarked. Also, the total URL isn't preserved, just the hostname. Visit site http://www.bluesnews.com/some_random_URL_string Exit Firefox Run Bleachbit, with ALL Firefox options selected Restart Firefox Check history: completely empty, other than bookmarked sites. www.bluesnews is NOT bookmarked Type "blue" which is Firefox automatically completes as "http://www.bluesnews.com/" Alternate Step #3: Use Firefox's built-in "Clear History" and select ALL entries with a time frame of "Everything". Same result as above. My inquiry in BB forums hasn't been responded to. I found Dan's proposed solution, however changing autocomplete in about:config only turns off the function, it doesn't actually stop storing URLs.
