  • Django Development Environment Setup Questions

    Hello, I'm trying to set up a good development environment for a Django project that I will be working on from two different physical locations. I have two Mac machines, one at home and one at work that I do most of my development on. I currently host a Ubuntu virtual machine on one of the machines to host the Django environemnt, install DropBox on it, and edit source code from my Mac. When I save the code file, the changes get synced over DropBox to the Ubuntu VM and the Django development server automatically restarts because of the change. This method has worked well in the past, but I am starting to use DropBox for a lot of other things now and don't want all of that to be downloaded on every virtual machine I use. Plus, I want to start using Eclipse + PyDev to be able to debug code and have code completion. Currently, I use TextEdit which is great, but doesn't support debugging or completion. So what are my options? I thought about setting up a Parallels VM on a thumb drive that has my entire environment on it (Eclipse included), but that has its own problems. Any other thoughts?

  • JavaApplicationStub with SWT causing problems

    I created an application in Eclipse that uses SWT for the GUI. I've attempted to deploy the application using the Eclipse deploy, but it seems that when I do that, LSUIElement is not respected, and I can't force the application to disappear from the dock. Nonwhistanding that issue, the application actually deploys ok and is runnable.     For this assignemnt, I think that I got it right, but when I submit it online, it doesn't list it as correct even though I checked with Eclipse. The prompt: Write a method isPalindrome that accepts an array of Strings as its argument and returns true if that array is a palindrome (if it reads the same forwards as backwards) and /false if not. For example, the array {"alpha", "beta", "gamma", "delta", "gamma", "beta", "alpha"} is a palindrome, so passing that array to your method would return true. Arrays with zero or one element are considered to be palindromes.   • Where should test classes be stored in the project?

    I build all my web projects at work using RAD/Eclipse, and I'm interested to know where do you guys normally store your test's *.class files. All my web projects have 2 source folders: "src" for source and "test" for testcases. The generated *.class files for both source folders are currently placed under WebContent/WEB-INF/classes folder. I want to separate the test *.class files from the src *.class files for 2 reasons:- There's no point to store them in WebContent/WEB-INF/classes and deploy them in production. Sonar and some other static code analysis tools don't produce an accurate static code analysis because it takes account of my crappy yet correct testcase code. So, right now, I have the following output folders:- "src" source folder compiles to WebContent/WEB-INF/classes folder. "test" source folder compiles to target/test-classes folder. Now, I'm getting this warning from RAD:- Broken single-root rule: A project may not contain more than one output folder. So, it seems like Eclipse-based IDEs prefer one project = one output folder, yet it provides an option for me to set up a custom output folder for my additional source folder from the "build path" dialog, and then it barks at me. I know I can just disable this warning myself, but I want to know how you guys handle this. Thanks.

  • Creating UTF-8 files in Java from a runnable Jar

    I have a little Java project where I've set the properties of the class files to UTF-8 (I use a lot of foreign characters not found on the default CP1252). The goal is to create a text file (in Windows) containing a list of items. When running the class files from Eclipse itself (hitting Ctrl+F11) it creates the file flawlessly and opening it in another editor (I'm using Notepad++) I can see the characters as I wanted. +--------------------------------------------------+ ¦ Universidade2010 (18/18)¦ ¦ hidden: 0¦ +--------------------------------------------------¦ But, when I export the project (using Eclipse) as a runnable Jar and run it using 'javaw -jar project.jar' the new file created is a mess of question marks ???????????????????????????????????????????????????? ? I've followed some tips on how to use UTF-8 (which seems to be broken by default on Java) to try to correct this so now I'm using Writer w = new OutputStreamWriter(fos, "UTF-8"); and writing the BOM header to the file like in this question already answered but still without luck when exporting to Jar Am I missing some property or command-line command so Java knows I want to create UTF-8 files by default ?

  • Methods to see result fo a code change faster

    This question came to me when developing using Eclipse. I use JBoss Application Server and use hot code replacement. But this option requires that the 'build automatically' option to be enabled. This makes Eclipse build the workspace automatically (periodically or when a file is saved?) and for a large code base this takes too much time and processing which makes the machine freeze for a while. Also sometimes an error message is shown saying that hot code replacement failed. The question that I have is: is there a better way to see the result of a code change? Currently I have the following two suggestions: Have unit tests - this will allow to run a single test and see the result of a code change. ( But for a JavaEE application that uses EJBs is it easy to setup unit tests?) Use OSGi - which allows to add jars to the running system without bringing down the JVM. Any ideas on above suggestions or any other suggestion or a framework that allows to do this is welcome.

  • How to import 3rd party libraries

    I found some cool android libraries the other day and decided to try some. But I'm having trouble correctly importing the library. This is the URL of the library : https://github.com/dmytrodanylyk/android-process-button I first tried importing the library to eclipse (and move the files in java directory to src directory and set the project as library) and importing the sample to eclipse and set it to use the library project (Properties-Android-Libraries). But it didn't work. The layout files said it failed to instantiate [custom widget class]. The I tried importing the .jar file to libs directory (and update the java build path) but it didn't work either. It showed errors in the java files too. I then tried copying all the java and layout files to the sample project directory and it worked. But I'm guessing that's not the way to work with 3rd party libraries. I first thought it's some error with the library but all the other libraries I tried to import to my projects faced the same problem. Can someone walk me through how to correctly import a 3rd party library to my android project?

  • Strange Puzzle - Invalid memory access of location

    The error message I'm getting consistently is: Invalid memory access of location 0x8 rip=0x10cf4ab28 What I'm doing is making a basic stock backtesting system, that is iterating huge arrays of stocks/historical data across various algorithms, using java + eclipse on the latest Mac Os X. I tracked down the code that seems to be causing it. A method that is used to get the massive arrays of data and is called thousands of times. Nothing is retained so I don't think there is a memory leak. However there seems to be a set limit of around 7000 times I can iterate over it before I get the memory error. The weird thing is that it works perfectly in debug mode. Does anyone know what debug mode does differently in Eclipse? Giving the jvm more memory doesn't help, and it appears to work fine using -xint.     Does anyone know of an updated list of refactoring support for different IDEs? How many of Fowlers refactorings have tool support in popular IDEs? And does any IDE use code smells to any greater extent? I guess one would have to use addons for some IDEs, so even if i did find an updated list of refactoring support for say Eclipse, that would probably not be representative.
