• Infected Win XP disk not openable on a Vista computer

  How can I read a WinXP partioned disk that is infected and shows up on a USB connection to Win Vista computer as a single partition that Vista cannot see the contents? The XP computer HDD is partioned into 4 partitions. It became infected, and all attempts to clean it have failed. Applications begin to launch, but are then shut down by the infecting agent. Using a major Anti-virus Co. boot disk (which was unable to connect to the Web, probably because the infecting agent stopped it) with virus definitions dated after the disk became infected, the resultant scan showed no infection. I bought a USB cable to connect the IDE drive to my Vista computer, but when I open Win Explorer, it sees the disk, but does not show any contents. It indicates it is a single partition that is valid. However in all the ways I have tried it does not show drive contents. Any suggestions on what to do next?

• Domain only responding to certain locations?

  I have a client who's been having problems with his site. The server doesn't seem to want to load hes site in certain countries, though other sites are fine. But this site [link removed] only seems to load in the US and Canada. In Europe, the UK, Asia etc, the site seems to be blocked (been like this for a week now). I've looked over the server and it seems fine. Other sites work fine, and the NS are set up properly, pointing to my main server, at http://puu.sh/MIGF Any ideas?

  I need to learn how to configure Cisco ASA/PIX boxes within my network. I have the task to impliment a new ASA 5505 into a new site we purchased. I have over 9 devices linking my sites together and with no support from the previous IT company im finding it hard to get to terms with what they can do and what they are currently doing. I know there are hundreds of guides how to configure them but into an existing environment? can anyone recommend courses within the UK that can help me? Im not much of a book reader, i would need to be able to manage my network after. also, should i seek external contracts to support these devices? as they are critical for our work. thanks

• Are changes to the date and time logged in Windows Server?

  We've recently gone into British Summer Time in the UK. One of our techs, anticipating the move, decided to change the time on one of our servers. Bad move. This server happens to have a number of time-based incidents logged to it, and as a result of this change, the times are unreliable. I'm trying to build a concrete timeline of when the clock was changed so I can apply corrective action to our time-based records. My question is:- Does Windows record date and time changes anywhere so I can get hard, actual data? Thanks

• Multiple Graphics Cards on Fedora 15 (Gnome 3)

  I have the (delightful) misfortune of having 3 graphics cards. They are XFX Radeon 5750s. Each drives 2 monitors via dvi. I am having a really hard time getting these running on fedora 15 (gnome 3). So my setup is 3 columns of 2 monitors (the upper monitor is mounted upside down in each column to reduce the bezel between monitors). When the (graphical) login screen comes up all 6 have the blue stripey background that must be the default, but then when I login, things get interesting. In the xorg.conf below, you will see only 2 of the screens in the serverlayout while the other 4 are commented out. Logging in with only 2 of the screens active works well (and it even remembers that the top one is upside down, and should be considered above the lower, i am not sure where it stores this info, but i set it using the graphical "Displays" settings) However, as soon as I uncomment a third screen, or more, it gives me an error message when I login. It's one of those friendly, less helpful messages (Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again). If i do not use an xorg.conf, then the "Displays" prefs pane shows only the two monitors on one of my graphics cards Thanks to anyone who can help me get going! • Is there any way of preventing .csv files being converted into excel format

  I'm trying to work with an automated testing tool which can use .csv files as its data sourse. After saving a notepad file containing a number of fields and data seperated by commas as .csv it appears to have been converted to an excel file. When I run the test, only the first line of values is identified and can be run within the automated test. Not sure if this is expected with the testing product (www.badboy.co.au), but just wondered if there was a way of preventing excel from taking control of the .csv file? Any helpfull feedback would be great.

• How to fix windows new line character on sftp synchronization in eclipse (pdt)

  Hello, I have a problem with windows new line characters being introduced into text files on eclipse sftp synchronization (via jcraft's sftp plugin). I've set "New text file line delimiter" to Unix and have even sanitized the file with "fromdos" but every time i upload using the sftp plugin, windows new line characters can be seen in the remote file as "^M" characters (when viewed in vi). A point to note is that if i upload using an external sftp client, it's all fine. Eclipse Version: PDT (Helios) SFTP: jcraft sftp plugin Local Environment: Ubuntu 10.04 Remote Environments: FreeBSD 6.4, Debian 4.0 What am i missing? • Big Excel File Freezing/Running Slowly

  Hi, My co-worker has a very large Excel file (over 7 MB) that suffers from the problems of (A) running slowly (B) taking forever to open/save/close and (C) freezing the computer, requiring a restart. I set the calculations to Manual, and I repaired the file, but the file didn't change in file size and it is still having these problems. My questions are: (1) Is there any way around this problem or is Excel just bad at handling ~7MB files? (2) Would upgrading RAM make a big difference? (3) It's possible that we can't afford to spend the money on a RAM upgrade. Are there are any other ways of mitigating the problem? Thanks.

  We have a fully working domain in UK and around the world we have user who use VPN ( checkpoint) to connect to or domain. One of the user in USA has a laptop which he never logged on to before ( it does caches the user login details). Does anyone know how to cache user login information on this laptop. I have tried netdom trust to add this user to the laptop but i was not able to do this. At the moment user is logging in with a local administrator account and then using VPN to log on to our domain but when it comes to accessing files on domain user get access deieded. When user try to login it gets There are currently no log on servers available to service the logon request Does anyone know how to add user.

• Win Server 2008 R2 - Mapped shared folder hanging?

  I have recently built a windows 2008 server R2 machine. This is purely for file server purposes and is very much a basic build. All windows updates installed and part of domain. I have setup a shared folder on the C:Drive and added permissions for domain users as co-owners. The client machines run XP SP3 and are part of the domain also. We have a few servers running the same setups on a few of our sites but this one is particular crashes users machines (explorer.exe hangs for at least a few mins) when attempting to access the shared folder. I have turned off the option on the network card for power save aswell still no change. Any help with this is very much appreciated and i look forward to hearing from you ;)

  As a junior technician I've had to deal with (or will have to deal with) some problems in the past and only being a junior technicain I don't have the confidence or respect from management staff to speak up. For instance, we're having a entirely new system. From Server 2003/XP going to Sevrer 2008 R2/Win7/VMWare/Digital Signage and the current amount of time dedicated to the training of the IT support department currently stands at 0. They seem to think that all it systems are the same and are going to get a bit of shock when I can't help them. I think there;s some UK legislation saying a school/business have to put money and time aside for training, but I'm not sure. What have you had to deal with?

• Connect macbook to my LAN through a VPN - best solution? [closed]

  So I have a LAN connected via a ADSL/PPPoA, this is using a bog-standard DLink router supplied by my ISP (talktalk UK). I have a NAS within the LAN that is running FreeNAS and I want to be able to connect to it when I'm out and about. It's running an atom so it's quite low on juice consumption but I don't want to have it on all day and night so I've been waking it via a magic packet and booting it down from the web admin when I need it. So I want to connect to the LAN, I presume via a VPN, to be able to send a magic packet. But what is the best method to accomplish this, or is there an easier way? I've been looking at the cisco 857 integrated router and the Netgear prosafe 318(behind modem) but not sure If I'm on the right track with what I want to achieve as I've not much experience or knowledge with VPN's or networking (software engineering student). I have tried port forwarding but to no avail, either with magic packets or even connecting outside the LAN via DYNDNS. Thanks,

  Hi all, Recently our organization got a couple of server boxes which are I guess present in some data-center in UK. The problem is that for some reason the default Locale representation in Java on that server returns en_US instead of the expected en_GB (I confirmed this by running a code on that server which simply outputs Locale.default()). I am pretty sure this has got something to do the way in which the boxes were set up. My question is: what would be the approach to fix this issue now that the OS has been installed? Is there any way I can for a given SSH session set the locale as en_GB instead of the current en_US? TIA, sasuke

• Could not use domain name instead of static IP

  Hi, I'm working with some partners in the UK. My office is in Vietnam. We are having a network problem: My partner can access an internal website using the domain name, e.g. http://website.name, but I can only access that website using the direct IP, e.g. 192.168.1.85. I can not ping that web server using "ping website.name" but it works if I using "ping 192.168.1.85". I want to use the domain name. Please help.

  It seems to me that our server freezes every 30 days around noon due to the huge utilization of xvda data transfer partition - writes are 50 times higher than normally (according to the health monitor in plesk). This seems to me as the reason why the apache & co becomes instable as (for example) all apache's processes are waiting to write their log (according to the service's full status). I am, however, unable to find any scheduled task that would be executed during that period. I have checked both cron and anacron setup and there is only one monthly anacron task which is not executed (according to the /var/log/cron - and there is nothing unusual) around noon. Are there any other places where to look for periodical processes? (I am just about to ask server's provider the same question about any external maintenance run around this time but I don't expect them to run anything time/resource consuming during the day.)

• Disable CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] to produce accented variations

  After an unknown config change, CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] has started producing common accented versions of [LETTER]. I'm not a big fan of this arrangement, seeing as I've memorized all my favourite ALT + [NUMPAD SEQUENCE] references and was used to using CTRL + ALT + [LETTER] for various other application-specific commands in my text editor. The prominent result from my searching suggests that this has something to do with a switch to an 'international keyboard', and says this can be removed in the control panel or toggled by hitting ALT + SHIFT, but I can't get my system to confirm this, and the solutions (or close approximations thereof) don't work. Specifically, I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Advanced settings and switched the override for default input method from 'language list' to English and I've been to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Language options and made sure that I only have my one input method (UK). Other than that I'm not quite sure where to look. Any ideas?

RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller While the other machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Atheros Communications Inc AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet The two machines are connected via a switch (Edimax ES-3205P). Unfortunately I still cannot connect the two machines together. Can somebody please show me what to do and how to go about solving this issue?

• How can I get Google to re-point its search entries to new domain?

  My main .com domain registration lapsed and when I went to re-register it, I found that a domain reseller service squatted it and I've lost access to it. As I wasn't terribly keen on spending money on funding scammers and the like, I registered a .co.uk domain under the same name. Is there any way of getting Google to re-point all its indexed links to the new domain? It's been indexing my blog for a couple years now and while it's not too big a deal, I'd like to not have to start all over again. Also, searching for my site results in an old entry which is currently pointing at a "Apply for a Tax Break NOW!!!" page.

• OpenBSD: Gateway outside subnet (works in Linux)

  We need to set up an OpenBSD host to use a default gateway that's outside of it's subnet. This is all I need to do on Linux (not the actual IPs) to achieve it: ifconfig eth0 33.33.33.33/31 up route add 33.33.33.254 dev eth0 route add default gw 33.33.33.254 The problem is that we don't know the proper equivalent of the middle command in OpenBSD. The man page says: If the destination is directly reachable via an interface requiring no intermediary system to act as a gateway, the -iface modifier should be specified; Sadly we can't seem to figure out how to make it work with that.   Hello, I'm attempting to get a redirect which is failing, and for some reason I can't think today. I have a vHost file within HTTPD that listens on standard port 80 and port 443. I'm attempting to redirect https://domain.com/(.*) to https://www.domain.com/$1 so that the URL remains intact. My config is as follows: ServerName www.domain.com ServerAlias tempdomain.testdomain.co.uk ServerAlias domain.com My rerwrite rule I'm using is. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.com$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.domain.com$1 [R=301,L] I've also tried removing the . and $ but nothing.. When I visit the url https://domain.com/secure.page?action=comp it doesn't redirect to https://www.domain.com/secure.page?action=comp I do also have other SSL pages, the above was just an example.. Can anyone point out my stupidity.

• Would a switch be covered by a router's firewall

  So... Hopefully; this is the right place for this question. I need more Ethernet ports on my home network. Sadly, we already have an old router connected to the main router and we still need more ports. I feel dumb for asking; but, I just would like to double check. Would the devices connected to the switch be "protected" by the Main router's firewall? ? Up to this point I have assumed that was the case; but, a co-worker is convinced that is not the case [ I believe he is thinking of a situation in which the switch (un-managed) is before an access point]. [It would go modem to main router; main router then has the switch and old router connected to it.

• Enable (or work around) Administrative shares in Windows 8

  So in using Windows 8, I've discovered that the administrative shares are disabled. There seems to be no easy way to get them re-enabled. Is anyone aware of a work around, or solution? I did not have this issue with Windows 7 After disabling UAC. However in Windows 8 this still doesn't work. • Device that connects to a switch via RJ45, that emulates a PC

  One of my co-workers once saw a device that plugged into a RJ45 jack, that emulated a PC. It could be configured with an IP address, and respond to pings. I was wondering if anyone knew about these, or even what they are called? This will be used to simulate a PC in a classroom environment. Thanks in advance. Edit: This is a CCNA classroom, we are looking to simulate a PC connected to an ethernet port on a router. These will be on different subnets, etc. This might be doable with a VM through VLANs and virtual switches, but then we are getting away from configuring the physical ports on the router the way we want to.
