• How do I correctly display special characters in my Firefox browser?

  (Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP) Every once in a while I notice an odd character on certain web pages when browsing the web. It is a outline of a box with a 4-digit number inside. And example of a page that has these characters is: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/#highlights After each section heading (Elastic, Completely Controlled, ...) I see a box with the number "0096" inside. I looked at the cached version on Google, and google has &ndash; in it's place, so I'm guessing I should be seeing a dash there instead of the box with the numbers in it. I have tried changing the character encoding in Firefox but haven't been able to find one that shows these characters correctly. Is there a way to allow Firefox to view these characters? • Network Path not found while joining Active Directory

  So I have an Amazon EC2 box running Windows Server 2008 with Active Directory installed on it. I also have a Windows 7 virtual machine, which is set to use the Active Directory box as its DNS and WINS server. I'm trying to join the virtual machine to the domain, and I'm asked for authentication. I give authentication, wait a minute, and I get an error saying: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "ad.chigs.me": The network path was not found. How can I fix this so that I'll be able to join the domain? Thanks!

• When load balancing, must all copies of static web page be exactly the same?

  I am used to get answers for everything on the web, but not this time... Yesterday I enable Amazon DNS weight functionally to load balance 7 websites between two different IP addresses (split 50%-50%). Both servers run IIS 8.5, sites runs well on both sides. Today I found out that Google WebMasterTools is reporting fails error with file robots.txt, all close to 50% of access try errors. The robots.txt file is ok and accessible (even via Google testing URL page) on both servers. Lets say current version of static web pages are on the first computer and the updated version of the same web pages are on the second computer. Can it be the problem? When load balancing, can static web pages be slightly different from one host server to the other? Thank you for your help

• Resize image on ViewSonic CD3200-EU

  My ViewSonic CD3200-EU monitor doesn't seem to have an option to scale the image vertically. I've tried all the buttons which look promising and even went as far as browsing the manual (possibly my first time). http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/uk/assets/004/9269.pdf Does anyone know if this can be done? • How can one domain route to an always-changing pool of servers?

  I'm sure this is an easy solution, I'm just not too familiar with how DNS works or if that's even related to this problem. If I'm running a web service on amazon ec2, distributed across many instances, how can I make it so a single domain name can be used to access the entire pool of servers, which will be changing from time to time? Since the instances may be present one second but gone the next (and vice versa), I need a way to randomly pick an active member of the cluster to route to. The updates would have to be instantaneous. Is this even possible, with dns caching and all?

  The Mac Pro has a specific hard drive for sale in the Apple Store for $549.00. The drive has the following specs: Serial ATA 3GB per second 7200 RPM Amazon has a hard drive with the same specs for $169.99. The only difference I can tell is that the Apple hard drive label says it has "Apple HDD Firmware". What exactly is the benefit of this firmware and is there something I am missing that make up for the price difference in these two drives? Update: My initial comparison between the two drive was unfair. Apparently 2TB drives that are 3 GB/S and 7200 RPM are quiet a bit more than $169.99. Dell has a 2 TB SATA Caviar Black from Western Digital that is $319.99, which is closer to Apple's price.

• How to Increase Memory Allocated to IIS .NET Application?

  We are using Windows 2008 R2 and IIS 7 running on Amazon EC2. IIS is running a single .NET application written in C#. We are having performance issues and I want to give the application more memory, but I cannot figure out how to do it. How do I control the amount of memory that the CLR gets? I'm a total newbie with IIS, .NET and the CLR. If I were working with Java, I would just use the -Xmx flag to increase the memory available to the JVM (e.g., -Xmx3000m for 3GB). But, I cannot seem to figure out how to do this in the Windows world.

However, having never done this before I have no idea how to transfer files from my local desktop to the online server. What is the standard convention for transferring files from local machine to the server? As a side note, why can I not download the .NET framework 4 .exe file? Clicking the download link does nothing... (it is already a trusted site)

I'd like to know what are the common ways to configure an Apache and MySQL server that is secure and efficient. For example right now I'm doing everything as root but I doubt that's the best way at all. My whole Apache is configured to serve 1 site when I'd like it to be able to serve multiple sites. • Logins with only HTTP - are they as insecure as I'm thinking?

  Recently I was thinking about how websites like gmail and amazon use HTTPS during the login process when accessing your account. This makes sense, obviously, since you're typing in your account username and password and you would want that to be secure. However, on Facebook, among countless other websites, their logins are done with simple HTTP. Doesn't that mean that my login name and password are completely unencrypted? Which, even worse, means that all those people who login to their facebooks (or similar sites) at a wifi hotspot in public are susceptible to anyone getting their credentials using a simple packet sniffer (or something similar)? Is it really that easy? Or am I misunderstanding internet security? I'm a software engineer working on some web related stuff, and although at the current time I'm not too involved with the security aspect of our software, I knew I should probably know the answer to this question, since it's extremely fundamental to website security. • Hosting solution for sensitive client data

  Hello, We are developing a web application that will deal with highly sensitive (financial) data of clients (audience is medium to large sized businesses). Clients will be under scrutiny from regulators & auditors and, as such, we will be too. More importantly to give clients a level of comfort our application and related hosting arrangement should instill a lot of confidence with them. We are looking into using a cloud based service like Linode, Amazon EC2, etc. To allow for maximum flexibility We are keen on putting everything on virtual servers and avoiding having to buy our own hardware. Does a cloud based service make sense for our particular scenario? If not what type of hosting should we consider? If so what should we look out for? Thanks!

  StackExchange manages it's own servers, as it should, but if SE were to be hosted on a 3rd party "cloud" hosting (like Amazon's), what would it's monthly / yearly expenses be(keeping everything else the same)? A detailed answer comparing it to the bills that Stackexchange boots currently (including power/property/staff) would help. (PS: I know that the blog is a good resource. I also understand that managing your own hosting is almost the same as setting up a hosting company and using it for your own needs. As i made full website in java(JSP + Servlet + mysql + Node.js), its been expensive to host. So i thought that why not to host on own server so that i will be fully dependent on my resources, not on any one else.   I need some help understanding firewalls. I played around with Amazon EC2 and it seems to provide a firewall out-of-the-box. When I say firewall, to me that means the ability to block ports from being accessed from the outside world, or to only specific security groups. I'm looking at a dedicated server hosting provider and they provide a hardware firewall for $50/month and it is limited to 10mbps. Can someone explain to me what kind of traffic this correlates to? Are these usually limited to the number of simultaneous connections also?

• High Availability Clustering and Virtualization

  I'm trying to understand how the various virtualization vendors (specifically Amazon EC2, but also VMware and Xen) enable software vendors to provide a real HA solution in the environment where the servers are virtualized. Specifically, if I'm running any HA application (exchange, databases, etc) I need to ensure that my redundant virtual "servers" aren't located on the same physical server. Using in-house virtualization solutions (VMware, Xen, etc) I can provision accordingly as well as check the virtual - physical arrangement. I could, however, accidentally "vmotion" to the same physical hardware. With EC2, I don't even have the ability at provision time to select different physical servers. Since their Cluster Compute Instances are 1 virtual server per physical server it seems to be the only way to guarantee I don't have a false sense of redundancy. Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. What are others doing about this problem? If the vendors provided an API where I could get something as simple as a unique physical system identifier I could at least know if I'm going to have an issue. -Tim

• Graphics card for dual 2560 x 1440 output

  As the title suggests I want to power two 2560 x 1440 monitors from one graphics card. I am just about to send my second graphics card back to Amazon, so before I purchase a 3rd incorrect card I thought I should get some advice. My latest card has dual DL-DVI output but only supports 2560 x 1440 on one output, the other maxes out at 1920 x 1080. Can graphics cards with two Dual Link DVI adapters (or alternately, one Dual Link DVI and one DisplayPort support the a full 2560 x 1440 on both monitors, or does that depend on the graphics hardware and not only the connectors?

• How to get a remote desktop / X11 with ubuntu 10.04 LTS from mac os x?

  I am running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 and I have X11 installed. I also have ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on a remote machine. I have root privileges. So far I haven't really installed anything besides the operating system. This was done in an amazon aws type of way. I see people talking about getting gnome or a "remote desktop" type of thing working, but I'm not sure how to go about this. I connected and then typed in gnome-session but nothing happened. Maybe I don't have that thing installed yet? Can someone point me in the right direction? Also, is it possible to just start an X11 session with a single app, like notepad or a file and folder browser?

• Can I add right-click options in Google Chrome?

  In Google Chrome, if I select a piece of text and right click on it, I get the option to: 'Search Google for [text]' I find this extremely useful but I'd also like to be able to add my own options. For example, I'd like to add the ability to search amazon.co.uk using the selected text or go straight to Google maps using the selected text (i.e. an address or postcode) and so on. I can sort of add this functionality using PhraseExpress but would rather be able to do it straight from Chrome - is it possible?

• My stereo headphones cable is broken, what can I do?

  I have a pair of stereo headphones, I got them on Amazon. Now, the right headphone stops producing sound. To fix that I need to move/shake the tip of the cable (the one before that part of tip which goes inside the headphone jack on the laptop). But as time goes, this sort of fix helps less and less. It looks that the cable is a bit broken at the place where I shake/move cable. Is that the end of use of my headphones? Is that a reject of the device? Is there a way to fix it, for example, changing the very tip of the cable at the very end of it. Any advice on buying headphones?

  I need to set up a server that will eventually be accessed from an Android application. I don't have experience with how to go about this, but I've seen MySQL servers (Amazon EC2). I would need to store data on the server remotely (again, from a mobile device) and fetch it to display. What would be the best kind of server to use? I'm guessing I would only need around 50 GB of space. Is it possible to use a network drive and set that up as a remote server with an IP address?   I am looking a way to establish dev machine on the cloud. I want to have access for development from different places. I don't want to play with sync brunch and so on. It would be Lubuntu with 1G or 512M memory and I want to have way to setup my image. What I have found in the current moment: Amazon EC2 service Azure Virtual Machines I am pretty sure that there should be more services like this. I hope to find one specified for this purpose. I have experience to work in such way and I like it. Unfortunately it was server of certain company for projects of this company and I can't use it for my private aims.   I am really new to this and am having trouble with how I can store information from a website. I am going to be making a site similar to dropbox for my company and there is gonna be around 40 TB of space that we need to be able to access on the go, for instance pull the file up on the phone or off our laptop using the internet. Obviously using an Amazon S3 server is not the most cost effective way of doing this so how can I make my own server to hold all of the info and communicate to it from a website? Please I need as much help as possible, like a blueprint or something. Thanks and sorry for the noobish question but I can't really find an exact answer to my question.

• Kindle Fire: PopupMenu$OrientationChangeListener leak

  I have a little popup menu that anchors on a button in the action bar. This works well on 3.0/3.1 Xoom and Galaxy tabs, and a 4.1 Nexus 7. However, on a 7" Fire HD (this one), I get an error about a leaked intent receiver when exiting the application. The error occurs only if the menu was not opened during that run. There is no mention of OrientationChangeListener in the one copy of the source I've found; I suspect Amazon has a different implementation. Questions: Has anyone encountered this? Does anyone know of a workaround or a fix? (Where) can I find Amazon's source code? Finally, (shudder) how important is it that I don't leak a receiver on application exit? • Which cloud hosting should I use? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? If anyone wants to get some real life karma by giving a tiny non-profit pointers, please advise! I posted a thread about our website with highly variable traffic (www.WorldOceansDay.org). The event is on June 8th, and the traffic goes from 100-400/day in the off-season, to about 200,000 trying to access the site at any one time on June 8th. It's a Wordpress site hosted on GoDaddy shared hosting and predictably crashed horribly. From the internet's feedback, we've decided to move to a cloud server to handle the traffic, but I'm a huge newbie and I don't have very reliable mentorship, so I'm turning to crowdsourcing. We're trying to decide between Amazon Web Services and RackSpace Cloud servers. Our sys admin consultant also suggested GoDaddy's new 4GH but I have had such incredibly bad experiences with GoDaddy thus far that I am hesitant. From what I've read on the internet, RackSpace might be cheaper? Would AWS totally break the bank? We don't have a ton of money to spend on hosting. We'll also be using CloudFlare to cache and serve the pages since they're dynamic. I've found a few AWS & RackSpace calculators but I am not 100% on how to find those numbers... GoDaddy?   If you want to send an email to a contact or several contacts, you might want to keep some of the recipient email addresses private using the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy) Field. Here’s how to do it in Outlook 2010. It’s not enabled by default, but adding it as a field for all future emails is a simple process. Launch Outlook and under the Home tab click on the New E-mail button. When the new mail window opens click on the Options tab and in the Show Fields column select Bcc. The Bcc field will appear and you can then put the contacts in there who you want to receive the mail secretly or don’t want to show a certain email address.
