  • High quality / high speed dvd reader for Mac Pro

    I have a high end Mac pro, but one thing in is that I'm unhappy with is a DVD drive. It's a Hitachi GH41N. Apple calls it a "superdrive", but it's anything but. The damn thing makes an amazing amount of noise, and isn't too fast either. What I want is a state of the art, fast, quiet DVD reader, preferably not even a burner. What should I get?

  • iPod Shuffle (3G) - USB adapter cables

    The iPod shuffle (3G) seems to have a proprietary connector that is different than the previous one for iPod shuffle (2G). I have tried the cable that comes with the 2G, and even a 3rd party charger, and their connectors are physically keyed so you cannot plug them in. Is anyone using a 3rd-party cable (besides the one Apple provided)?

  • Mac Text Editor (with function list)

    So I've got a Mac in the post coming to me, and will probably be doing quite a bit of development on it so I am looking for a text editor (PHP + HTML mainly). I curently use Notepad++ on Windows and I simply cannot live without the function list plugin (It displays all functions in the current PHP file in a box on the right). Do any Mac text editors have this functionality? I am fairly sure that Notepad++ isn't available on an Apple. Thanks!

  • LaunchDaemon causing Lion to hang on boot

    I've got a Mac Mini 2011, which I intend to use for a few tasks such as Plex and running a few VM's. I've installed virtualbox, along with XAMPP and phpvirtualbox, which all worked fine. However, getting this to run on startup is proving a real PITA! I'm at the moment trying to get vboxwebsrv running on boot. I've created a launchd plist within /Library/LaunchDaemons to run it and it works fine... well sort of. Lion when booting will show the spinning wheel and stop, never showing a GUI - however if I remote in via screen sharing or SSH, I can login fine and see that vboxwebsrv has launched successfully. Setting this plist to disabled makes lion boot up fine again. Initially I thought it was due to it staying open, so tried to add -b which causes it to run in the background, this just caused launchd to constantly spawn new processes and didn't even fix my problem of Lion being stuck at the spinning wheel. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm losing my mind here!   • Sirius Satellite Radio Streaming via XBOX 360

    Anyone have any luck with this? I've found a number of articles which point to an application uSirius which is apparently discontinued (bought out by Apple or something it looks like) but it is nowhere I have found. Basically I know media center has some baked in functionality for XM radio streaming, but nothing for Sirius radio. Anyone have any luck with this? Thanks, Kyle

    I've created a sparsebundle just as suggested at http://www.readynas.com/?p=253; however, Time Machine fails to recognize the mounted image. The sparseimage is stored on an external drive, and I already executed: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 I have also verified that the naming format of the sparsebundle is: MachineName_.sparsebundle. I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.7).

  • Kinesis Advantage OS X media keys

    I recently started using a Kinesis Advantage with my MacBook and one of the things I've really missed since switching from my Apple keyboard is having the functionality of the OS X media keys. I know the Advantage keyboards are pretty customisable but having Googled for quite a while I haven't been able to find any sources saying that it's possible to map the function keys on the Advantage to the appropriate OS X function. Has anyone had any success in getting something like this to work? Any tips would be hugely appreciated.

  • Install iphone sdk DMG file on iMac but I can't find where any of the programs are located

    I just download the iPhone DMG file from apple and installed in on my new iMac (by following these directions: link text). The problem is, I can't seem to find where any of the programs got installed. I can't find XCode or Interface Builder in the applications list and everytime I click on the "iPhone SDK" icon in the applications list, it re-opens finder with the same packages that I am trying to install. P/S: I am completely new to the the Mac world so I might be doing everything completely wrong.

  • Why has my zoom feature stopped working in OSX 10.6?

    For the life of me I can't get the zoom feature to work on OSX 10.6 on my Max Mini. It's a fresh install, I have the wireless mighty mouse with the small grey scroll ball and the small wireless Apple metal keyboard. I've tried enabling "Zoom using scroll ball whilst holding ^Control" mouse System Preference. I also tried enabling Zoom in "Universal Access" in the System Preferences. This did work in OSX 10.5, but seems to have stopped since I installed 10.6.

In the firewall section it states that ipfw has a default allow rule: 65535 allow ip from any to any And if you enable the firewalls 'stealth mode' via the settings the following rule should be added: 33300 deny icmp from any to me in icmptypes 8 The funny thing is: I have stealth enabled and I do not see this rule when doing sudo ipfw print Any idea where stealth mode is enforced if not in the ipfw ruleset?

    I have a legal copy of Snow Leopard on DVD (retail) which I am attempting to use to create a bootable flash drive. The software I have been directed to use requests a .iso file (as I am familiar with from other os installs), but when inserting the DVD into either Windows 7 or Ubuntu 9.10 the disk is recognized only as a "Windows Support" DVD, with materials to "support Apple hardware with Windows." This is eventually intended for a hackintosh attempt on an ASUS EEEPC 1000HE netbook. This is an install disk. Thanks

The configuration seems to work fine for both even though i am required to specify for the first one, host= i686-apple. When i get to the make part of the installation, the output is as follows.     I have a MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,2 / 2.8 GHz) with 4 GB of ram (2x2GB). I'm looking to upgrade to 8GB. The memory in it now is DDR3 PC3-8500 1067. Checking out prices for 4 GB sticks of PC3-8500 there is about $100 difference for "apple certified" ram. Will any DDR3 PC3-8500 module work or is there really a difference?
