  • SQLCMD Syntax error when running script that runs fine in management studio

    When I run the this select '$(''test'')' in SQL Management Studio 2008 it returns $('test') When I run sqlcmd -S SERVER -E -d DATABASE -q "select "$(''test'')" on the command line it returns Sqlcmd: Error: Syntax error at line 1 near command '''. If I remove the dollar sign it works. Is the "$" a special character? Is this a sqlcmd bug? How can I change the script to get the desired result.

    So it seems like a lot of people are playing the blame game around where I work, and it brings up an interesting question. Knowns: Requirements team writes requirements for product. Developers create their own unit tests out of requirements. Testing team creates their general tests out of requirements and past customer issues. Product released if and only if X% of testcases from Testing team passes Customer response team gets bugs from the field, and lets the testing team know about these issues. Question: If the customer ends up filing a lot of defects, who is to blame? Is it the Testing team for not covering those? Or is it the requirements team for not writing better requirements? And how does one improve upon the system?

  • Convincing Management to use WCF

    Hi All, I asked another question, stating that the I am unable to use WCF in a new Web Service project and have come to see that it seems to be the technology to use in regards to extensibility and security. My question is a simple one: How can I persuade management (and developers for that matter) to move over to using WCF as opposed to other web service technologies (ASMX/CFC)? They won't be concerned with a comparison between the types (especially with regard to ASMX), simply what there is to gain. Thanks for your time, Kyle

  • WCF 3.5 - Remove SVC Extension - Special Case

    I have several RESTful endpoints like such: System.Security.Role.svc System.Security.User.svc etc. This is meant to be a namespace so our RESTful URL's would look like: /rest/{class namespace}/{actions} I have tried a few examples to get the SVC extension removed when my endpoint has multiple periods in it, however, nothing seems to work. I have tested with the WCF REST Contrib package (http://wcfrestcontrib.codeplex.com/), this example (http://www.west-wind.com/weblog/posts/570695.aspx), and another StackOverflow post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/355165/how-to-remove-thie-svc-extension-in-restful-wcf-service). This works great when my endpoint is something like this: Echo.svc It will properly remove the SVC extension. Any ideas on how to handle endpoints with multiple periods in the endpoint name? EDIT: After some further testing, I found out that it is failing because whenever you do: string path = HttpContext.Current.Request.AppRelativeCurrentExecutionFilePath; If the endpoint contains multiple periods, it strips off everything after the endpoint causing all of the standard IHttpModule's to fail. Example: If I call http://localhost/services/Echo/test, my relative app file path has a returned value of: ~/echo/test However, if I make a call as http://localhost/services/System.Security.User/test, then my relative app file path has a returned value of: ~/system.security.user I am missing the '/test' on the end in that situation.

  • SQLCMD Restore works in Management Studio but not from DOS prompt

    Any idea why my Restore command works fine when run in Management Studio 2008 but not when run from the dos prompt? Shown below is the error when running from the dos prompt.   • Special case when calling InvokeScript with the winforms WebBrowser control does not work

    I am trying to use InvokeScript method on the WebBrowser control to execute a script on the web page that has been loaded into my WebBrowser control. If I am calling just a simple javascript function, this works properly. However, the javascript function that I am trying to call is nested within a variable like this: var holder = { DoA: function() { .... }, DoB: function() { ..... } } Calling holder.DoA works fine when called from within the javascript, but the function is not called successfully when I try to call it from within my C# code like this: object obj1 = m_webBrowser.Document.InvokeScript("holder.DoA"); Any ideas?

  • Better Alternative to Case Statement

    Hi All, I currently have a switch statement that runs around 300 odd lines. I know this is not as giant as it can get, but I'm sure there's a better way to handle this. The switch statement takes an Enum that is used to determine certain properties that pertain to logging. Right now the problem sets in that it is very easy to leave out an enumeration value and that it will not be given a value as it is not in the switch statement. Is there an option one can use to ensure that every enumeration is used and given a custom set of values it needs to do its job? Thanks, Kyle

    Rails appears to not be loading any fixtures for unit or functional tests. I have a simple 'products.yml' that parses and appears correct: ruby: title: Programming Ruby 1.9 description: Ruby is the fastest growing and most exciting dynamic language out there. I also added the explicit fixtures load (seen above). I did come across the other Rails test fixture question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1547634/rails-unit-testing-doesnt-load-fixtures, but that leads to a plugin issue (something to do with the order of loading fixtures). BTW, I am developing on Mac OS X 10.6 with Rail 2.3.5 and Ruby 1.8.7, no additional plugins (beyond the base install). Any pointers on how to debug, why the magic of Rails appears to be failing here? Is it a version problem? Can I trace code into the libraries and find the answer? There are so many "mixin" modules I can't find where the fixtures method really lives.

    Hi guys, i have installed TFS 2010 in a 2 server setup with an App Tier server and a SQL Server and am not 100% happy with the performance. Both are running in VM's on SAN disks and have been given the following virtual hardware each: Windows 2008 R2 1 CPU @ 2.8Ghz 2gb RAM what should i lift - neither machine is hammered but both do go up to 80% when people are doing things on them - should i add another CPU to each - usually this is now required in a VMWARE setup but i don't know if TFS 2010 takes advantage of an extra core??? thank you in advance :-)

There are two development teams/divisions within our company who each maintain public websites on these same servers. Is there a way through ACLs or some sort of rights management (e.g. individual logins) that I would only be able to see and maintain only my public sites and the other development team could only see and maintain their sites? I'm trying to come up with a SQL query that lists all of these cases ordered by their creation date, so ideally the result should be something like this: username jan01 useRnAme jan02 Username jan03 john feb01 John feb02 jOhn feb03 Any suggestions will be much appreciated

Obabikon, ON 49°10'N 94°10’W 2278 km N69°W I have a regex search as follows: String LongPattern = @"(~)?([0-9\?])+°([0-9\?])*'[EWO]"; return FindPattern(source, LongPattern); It should be finding the <94°10’W But is it not. This regex is working for the rest of my data with out any problems. Any clues?

    Our product consists of multiple applications, All using Lucene. 2 of the applications I am involved with have Lucene indexes of about 3 GB and 12GB. Another team is building an application, for which they estimate the LUCENE INDEX size to be close to 1 Terabyte. New documents are added to the indexes every 15 days approx. We do not have any apparent performance issues with the current applications. So my question is SHould we be using Solr now? When should one stop using Lucene and graduate to Solr? Any disadvantages/problems for using Solr? The client applications are made in ASP.Net, but I assume they will be able to use a solr server using solrnet

    Hi, I just started with VS2010 and the feature I was really looking forward too was the new Intellisense, and the Camel casing matching in particular. But I must say I'm pretty dissapointed with the way it works and am wondering if this is just a setting, or not. When I type 'OIE' I get the following results: OrderItemBackerEntity (OIBE) OrderGarmentActionGroupItemEntity (OGAGIE) OrderItemClothingEntity (OICE) OrderItemEntity (OIE) << GOOD These indeed do match in some way, but why does it match so broad, and not only the fitting one, the last one. Are these settings, or is this by design?
