• GParted wont resize extended partitions

  I have dual booted windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and have decided that I need more space on my Ubuntu partition. I used gparted on a Live CD to shrink my Windows 7 partition (/dev/sda3) but when i try to resize the extended partition (/dev/sda4), which houses my linux partition (/dev/sda6), the right click options are greyed out and there is a key next to the extended partition. I have resized the partitions within the extended partition before to provide room, but now I can go no further with that, and need to grow the extended partition. The free space lies to the left of the extended partition and there is a small amount of free space directly to the right as well. Also, within the extended partition is /dev/sda5 (ntfs) , which I have no idea what is on it, but most of the space (3.42GB) is used, /dev/sda6 (ext4, mount point: /), my partition containing Linux, and /dev/sda7 (linux-swap). I hope you guys can help me with this because I really don't want to screw something up while trying to resize the extended partition.

• Ubuntu - Black Screen After Suspend

  I used Ubuntu with no problems and I upgraded to 11.10 and everything was fine. But when I did my first suspend I was not able to boot again, all I got was a black screen no bios screen, nothing just blank, I tried doing hard reset but when I power on again same happens. I tried ctrl+alt+delete F1-F12 but i think the keyboard is not working, also tried booting from CD but all I got was blank screen, the hard disk light is not blinking at all so i'm assuming it's not trying to boot. My laptop is Toshiba satellite with ATI Radeon graphics. Hibernate was working fine though. I searched the net for solutions but with no luck. Any ideas?

• Backup Windows files using Ubuntu - Unable to find Win partition

  I am using a Dell laptop with Windows 7, all of a sudden the HDD is not recognized by Win7. I wanted to backup the data in Win, so I made a Ubuntu 12.04.1 Live CD, and booted from it. I am using Ubuntu without installing it in my laptop. My problem is that I don’t see the Windows partitions in Ubuntu 12.04.1, b’cos of which I am unable to backup the data. Any suggestion in this regard would be very helpful.. PS: I checked the SMART status of the HDD it says 2 Bad sectors, when I attempted an extended Self-Test, I get a Read Failed message, though the Short test goes through fine. Thank You, Siva

• Custom Russian Phonetic Keyboard

  I tried to custom Russian phonetic keyboard through Terminal. To do this I wrote: cd /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ then: sudo gedit ru The document " ru (/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols) - gedit " appeared on the desktop. I changed all the keys that suited me, saved the file and restarted the computer. However, the changes didn't work out. I checked the document again. The changes are there, but the keys still code for the old layout. I think I am missing some important point. Please help. By the way I get in Terminal this message: ** (gedit:14887): WARNING **: Could not load Gedit repository: Typelib file for namespace 'GtkSource', version '3.0' not found (gedit:14887): IBUS-WARNING **: The owner of /home/roma/.config/ibus/bus is not root! • After upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 Ubuntu doesn't load the splash screen anymore

  I have the problem that Ubuntu doesn't load the splash screen anymore (after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04). After the Grub-bootloader, it takes a few seconds to load and then the monitor turns black. I already tried to boot from a Ubuntu Live CD, but the result was the same error. Furthermore I tried to start the protected mode, but it freezes just after showing me menu. Do you have any solutions for this? And is it possible to switch from Grub to the Ubuntu console?

• USB file transfer preparing to copy, but file count climbs indefinitely

  I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04 to back up my Windows machine that won't boot and am running Ubuntu from the CD. I copied and pasted a volume of about 160GB to my external HDD. The transfer has been stuck in the "preparing to copy" stage for several hours and is displaying a file/GB count about twice as high as the volume of data actually being copied! The number is now larger than the entire partition that's being copied from! However I know it's doing something because occasionally it pops up with a minor I/O error on this or that file which I then have to click through. I've not had this problem before so I can only assume it's a Linux/Ubuntu thing. More importantly what I want to know is is there any other way to copy it across that will actually work?

• Exalogic 2.0.1 Tea Break Snippets - Modifying the Default Shipped Template

  Having installed your Exalogic Virtual environment by default you have a single template which can be used to create your vServers. Although this template is suitable for creating simple test or development vServers it is recommended that you look at creating your own custom vServers that match the environment you wish to build and deploy. Therefore this Tea Time Snippet will take you through the simple process of modifying the standard template. Before You Start To edit the template you will need the Oracle ModifyJeos Utility which can be downloaded from the eDelivery Site. Once the ModifyJeos Utility has been downloaded we can install the rpms onto either an existing vServer or one of the Control vServers. rpm -ivh ovm-modify-jeos-1.0.1-10.el5.noarch.rpm rpm -ivh ovm-template-config-1.0.1-5.el5.noarch.rpm Alternatively you can install the modify jeos packages on a none Exalogic OEL installation or a VirtualBox image. If you are doing this, assuming OEL 5u8, you will need the following rpms. rpm -ivh ovm-modify-jeos-1.0.1-10.el5.noarch.rpm rpm -ivh ovm-el5u2-xvm-jeos-1.0.1-5.el5.i386.rpm rpm -ivh ovm-template-config-1.0.1-5.el5.noarch.rpm Base Template If you have installed the modify onto a vServer running on the Exalogic then simply mount the /export/common/images from the ZFS storage and you will be able to find the el_x2-2_base_linux_guest_vm_template_2.0.1.1.0_64.tgz (or similar depending which version you have) template file. Alternatively the latest can be downloaded from the eDelivery Site. Now we have the Template tgz we will need the extract it as follows: tar -zxvf  el_x2-2_base_linux_guest_vm_template_2.0.1.1.0_64.tgz This will create a directory called BASE which will contain the System.img (VServer image) and vm.cfg (VServer Config information). This directory should be renamed to something more meaning full that indicates what we have done to the template and then the Simple name / name in the vm.cfg editted for the same reason. Modifying the Template Resizing Root File System By default the shipped template has a root size of 4 GB which will leave a vServer created from it running at 90% full on the root disk. We can simply resize the template by executing the following: modifyjeos -f System.img -T <New Size MB>) For example to imcrease the default 4 GB to 40 GB we would execute: modifyjeos -f System.img -T 40960) Resizing Swap We can modify the size of the swap space within a template by executing the following: modifyjeos -f System.img -S <New Size MB>) For example to increase the swap from the default 512 MB to 4 GB we would execute: modifyjeos -f System.img -S 4096) Changing RPMs Adding RPMs To add RPMs using modifyjeos, complete the following steps: Add the names of the new RPMs in a list file, such as addrpms.lst. In this file, you should list each new RPM in a separate line. Ensure that all of the new RPMs are in a single directory, such as rpms. Run the following command to add the new RPMs: modifyjeos -f System.img -a <path_to_addrpms.lst> -m <path_to_rpms> -nogpg Where <path_to_addrpms.lst> is the path to the location of the addrpms.lst file, and <path_to_rpms> is the path to the directory that contains the RPMs. The -nogpg option eliminates signature check on the RPMs. Removing RPMs To remove RPM s using modifyjeos, complete the following steps: Add the names of the RPMs (the ones you want to remove) in a list file, such as removerpms.lst. In this file, you should list each RPM in a separate line. The Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Administrator's Guide provides a list of all RPMs that must not be removed from the vServer. Run the following command to remove the RPMs: modifyjeos -f System.img -e <path_to_removerpms.lst> Where <path_to_removerpms.lst> is the path to the location of the removerpms.lst file. Mounting the System.img For all other modifications that are not supported by the modifyjeos command (adding you custom yum repositories, pre configuring NTP, modify default NFSv4 Nobody functionality, etc) we can mount the System.img and access it directly. To facititate quick and easy mounting/unmounting of the System.img I have put together the simple scripts below. MountSystemImg.sh #!/bin/sh # The script assumes it's being run from the directory containing the System.img # Export for later i.e. during unmount export LOOP=`losetup -f` export SYSTEMIMG=/mnt/elsystem # Make Temp Mount Directory mkdir -p $SYSTEMIMG # Create Loop for the System Image losetup $LOOP System.img kpartx -a $LOOP mount /dev/mapper/`basename $LOOP`p2 $SYSTEMIMG #Change Dir into mounted Image cd $SYSTEMIMG UnmountSystemImg.sh #!/bin/sh # The script assumes it's being run from the directory containing the System.img # Assume the $LOOP & $SYSTEMIMG exist from a previous run on the MountSystemImg.sh umount $SYSTEMIMG kpartx -d $LOOP losetup -d $LOOP Packaging the Template Once you have finished modifying the template it can be simply repackaged and then imported into EMOC as described in "Exalogic 2.0.1 Tea Break Snippets - Importing Public Server Template". To do this we will simply cd to the directory above that containing the modified files and execute the following: tar -zcvf <New Template Directory> <New Template Name>.tgz The resulting.tgz file can be copied to the images directory on the ZFS and uploadd using the IB network. • Lubuntu 12.04 installation trouble

  I have i problem! I can't install the Lubuntu 12.04 on my old pc. I only get to the point where I have entered all the needed information (hard drive, username, password etc). When the installation wizard is starting to copy files from the cd to the hard drive, I get after about one minute a blank sreen with only themouse cursor! I can move the mouse cursor but the whole procegure is stoped! Nothing happens after that! My PC: Compaq Pressario 7000 Pentium III 933 MHz 768 MB RAM Any idea how to solve it?? Thanks!!!

• Double click executable file and nothing happens

  I'm trying to install a game for Linux called Myth 2. Autorun doesn't run when I insert the CD. When I double-click or right-click and the select "Open" on the Setup file, a box appears saying that it's an executable file, and what I want to do. I click on "Run", but nothing happens after that. I checked the permissions, and it allows it running the executable. How do I install this game? Please break down instructions as much as possible, I'm not used to using commands and Terminal. ;)

  I have an old computer which has 512MB RAM and 128MB Graphic card. It has windows 95 currently, it loads fine but it has some issues with Internet connection and pendrive. I am tired of solving problems. I booted live CD of ubuntu 10.10. It loads slow and some diplay problems. But it resolved my internet problem and pendrive. So I want install ubuntu which is equivalent to windows 95 in boot, application load, graphics level. Can anyone suggest unbuntu version? What about xbuntu?

• Grub Won't Boot WIndows 7

  I have a problem with Grub 2. when i hit the Windows 7 (loader) option on the Grub boot screen Windows won't boot. i get a black screen with a white cursor blinking... Here is a log of my Boot options. I just want to delete all the other partitions which i don't know how they 've been made and stay just with the Ubuntu ext4 partition, the swap partition and the WIndows 7 partition. Can someoune help me with my problem? • Switch from encrypted partition to unencrypted (Error: cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available)

  I initially installed Ubuntu 11.04 with an encrypted file system (from the alternate install CD: Guided Partitioning, LVM encrypted). Now I wanted to change this setup to have my root file system on an unencrypted partition. I had the following setup before: /dev/mapper/my-root on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro,commit=0,commit=0) /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw,noatime) I backed up /, reformatted /dev/sda5 (which had contained the encrypted LVM device) to an ext3 partition, and restored / to that partition. I edited /etc/fstab, removed the line /dev/mapper/my-root / ..., and added the line: /dev/sda5 / ext3 noatime,rw,errors=remount-ro,commit=0 0 1 I edited /etc/crypttab, and commented out the single entry. On reboot, I get the grub screen as usual, but then I get the message cryptsetup:evms_activate is not available, waiting for encrypted source device. I tried reinstalling Grub2 using a LiveCD with the ChRoot method, but that didn't make any difference. Why is Ubuntu still searching for an encrypted device?

• Migrate 12.04 Wubi install to new partition with corrupted win7 install and small hard drive

  The move from Win7 to Ubuntu 12.04 has been honestly awesome. But I've come into a snag because my Win7 inevitably broke. I can still boot into Ubuntu even though Win7 is broken (won't boot, can't repair). I'd like to Migrate Wubi to a real partition and forget about windows. Presumably under normal conditions I would run the Ubuntu live CD, create a new partition then log back into my Wubi install and migrate using the script to the new partition. But I'm worried if I do that I'll break my current wubi set-up and be unable to migrate. I have a small hard drive, only 75GB and unfortunately my backup drive recently died so can't migrate there first and transfer over either. Does anybody have any suggestions to solve this?

  after having installed ubuntu 13.04 i can not connect to the internet wirelessly or wired? can only connect to internet by using "try ubuntu" via ethernet cable, ive tried seeking help in so many different ways yet getting no positive outcome at all, will someone please explain why i can only connect with ethernet while i have the cd in the tray? ive also tried downloading b43 drivers to connect to the internet but apparently i dont have enough disk space, what is going on here? i have the disk in the tray now at the screen where you can either try or install, if someone could give me a step by step from here it would probably cut out all this hassle of me not knowing whats going on

  Hi, I am trying to install Lucid from an iso (bios doesnt let me boot from USB and dvd drive is busted). I followed the instructions on the bottom of this page: ´The CD image approach´ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromWindows The ubuntu ALTERNATE iso is in my c: root dir. I even tried a fix that used to work in older versions (found on a forum) but that did nothing. What happens: - boot until the boot.ini menu - select install ubuntu - select install ubuntu again, I´m assuming this is grub - do some country settings,.. - harddrive is scanned for ISO image - not found, not even with thorough search...

• Set nomodeset in usb installation (efi loader with iso)

  I'm working with the studyblast solution (http://studyblast.wordpress.com/2011/08/14/guide-mac-os-x-lion-how-to-boot-a-linux-live-system-from-a-usb-drive-how-to-update-any-ocz-ssds-firmware/) to creating a live usb for osx. I managed to get Ubuntu booted but the screen looks like a corrupt/glitch image. I can just about make out the clock on the bottom right and a few icons. I've been told that this is an easy fix and that nomodeset needs to be set for the graphics card but all the solutions i find are for a hard drive installed Ubuntu where you can cd in and edit the grub file - how do you do this is it's in an iso? • Do I have to completely reinstall Ubuntu now that it won't boot?

  I just tried installing software called Teamviewer. It said there was some kind of error with unresolved dependancies. Then I realized I was trying to install the 32 bit version, but I needed to install the 64 bit version. So I tried that, and I got an error saying that Ubuntu needed to do a partial upgrade. I thought that was weird, so I just wanted to abandon installing anything and get out of this. I exited all programs and rebooted, and now I can't get back into Ubuntu. After the GRUB screen I get a black screen and no login options. If I boot into recovery, I get the following screen: I booted up a live CD of 12.04 to see if that could help, but it seems the only option is to completely reinstall Ubuntu. Can I repair this in any way, or is my only option to make a fresh install?
