• cannot get upstart to run user job

  I am trying to get upstart start a user job during the boot of my machine. I have my conky.conf upstart config file in my $HOME/.init directory. Wenn I run "start conky" I get this error: dre@dre-laptop:~$ start conky start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.76" (uid=1000 pid=2843 comm="start conky ") interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init") dre@dre-laptop:~$ I (think I) know that this error has to do with the d-bus system (authentification). • Showing Egde Shaped Event Duration in StreamInsight using Debugger

  Whilst writing some courseware I wanted to be able to see the start and end times of Edge shaped events from within the debugger.  A quick recap on Edge events At the start of the event you do not know the end time and most probably cannot work it out or you should be using one of the other shapes. You enqueue an event (Start Edge) with the start time and payload of the event.  The end time of the event is set to infinity When you see the end edge come through, you enqueue another event (End Edge) with the previous start time and payload and restate the event’s end time.  This is the Retract Event All seems simple enough.  The problem is the debugger is a little shy about showing you what you need but you can get it to show you everything by also reading this article Here’s what I mean. Here is what the Event Debugger looks like by default when viewing 2 complete edge events.  Notice how all the end times are set to infinity   The above does not tell you for how long an event was valid.  I then add the “NewEndTime” column to the debugger output and there I can now see the duration of events.  You will see the Retract events (End Edge) have the same start time and payload as their respective start events (Start Edge)   You can follow the exact same logic when looking at Interval shape events.  They look a little different on the output adapter but using this article you can easily see what is happening.

• C# Process.Start() on an executable on a remote system - security warning?

  I've created a Windows Service that accepts commands from remote machines via WCF. One of those commands is to run a specified executable (let's ignore the security implications of such functionality). In my Service I am using Process.Start() to run the executable. All works well if the executable is local to the machine, but if it is on a remote file share it is failing with no error (or more accurately just hanging). I suspect the problem is that it is triggering the standard Windows 'Unverified Publisher' warning that one would see if they double click an exe on a remote system. Is there any way I can bypass this from my service so that I can truly run any executable? As I said I understand the security implications of allowing it to run any executable, but this is really what I need. I would have thought this warning was only a user mode concept, but it really does seem to be getting in the way of my Service. Ideas?

I currently have my custom cms, but i wanna go for opensource cms solution from now on. and as i researched Drupal is COOL for any kind of project from small scope to most complex ones. I have never used Drupal before, I know nothing about it yet. Would it worth to work on Drupal 6 for now, or better to wait for Drupal 7? is there any big difference about the way it works. i would feel silly to spend days-weeks to learn Drupal 6 now and after few months when Drupal 7 beta is out, a new learning curve and having troubles to upgrade to Drupal 7 my current Drupal 6 projects? • SIP and Java, where to start and with what?

  I want to implement the SIP protocol in java and would want to be able to create different clients (5 or more) and make them connect to a proxy server. This is all for testing purposes so I would like to be able to see well what's happening on a rather low level. The clients should first be able to communicate trough text and later on maybe also by audio. (If I ever get that far) I already read a bit about the JAIN libraries and what I understood from that is that they are not really well suited for the server side? I also didn't really find any proxy server examples, tutorials, using JAIN. I also found this SIP Servlet Tutorial book, I used HTTP servlets in the past but should I prefer servlets or JAIN or ...? I'm quite new to SIP so I don't really know where to start or what to choose in combination with java.

• rake jobs:work working fine. problem with script/delayed_job start.

  I am calling function with LoadData.send_later(:test). LoadData is my class and test is my method. It's working fine while i am running rake jobs:work. • applet does not load

  We have a legacy program that was ported from Java 1.3 to Java 1.5. This application involves applets which worked fine before. After porting however, the applet would not load. However there are no errors or exceptions. The app would just try to load it forever. We tried to run it with Java 1.6 and poof! No problems whatsoever. Isn't Java 6 backwards compatible? • What does the EC2 command line say when a machine won't start?

  When starting an instance on Amazon EC2, how would I detect a failure, for instance, if there's no machine available to fulfill my request? I'm using one of the less-common machine types and am concerned it won't start up, but am having trouble finding out what message to look for to detect this. I'm using the EC2 commandline tools to do this. I know I can look for 'running' when I do ec2-describe-instance to see if the machine is up, but don't know what to look for to see if the startup failed. Thanks!

  I have general academic knowledge of the various design patterns that are discussed in GoF and Head First Design Patterns, but I have a difficult time applying them to the code that I am writing. A goal for me this year is to be able to recognize design patterns that are emerging from the code that I write. Obviously this comes with experience (I have about 2 years in the field), but my question is how can I jumpstart my ability to recognize design patterns as I am coding, maybe a suggestion as to what patterns are easiest to start applying in client-server applications (in my case mainly c# webforms with ms sql db's, but this could definitely be language agnostic).

I want to get the unix timestamp for the start of the next day. $current_timestamp = time(); $allowable_start_date = strtotime('+1 day', $current_timestamp); As I am doing it now, I am simply adding 1 whole entire day to the unix timestamp, when instead I would like to figure out how many seconds are left in this current day, and only add that many seconds in order to get the unix timestamp for the very first minute of the next day.   I am writing a windows batch script to uninstall some software. However I need to wait after the uninstaller has finished for a service to be restarted before continuing with the next uninstall.   Hi, I have been investigating how My ASP.NET MVC application can log unsuccessful / incomplete downloads. I have a controller handling the file requests which currently returns a FileResult. What I need to record is the IPAddress, filename and when the download started, then the same data and when it completed. I have looked at intercepting the request start and end with an HttpModule and also IIS7 failed request tracing but am not sure which route would be best and have this feeling that maybe I am missing an obvious answer to the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any alternatives as this seems like something many people would want to know from their web server? Thanks for your help

• How to start a process from another application and then open a terminal to that process in gnu scre

  I'd like to be able to launch a process from a GUI application (right now I'm thinking specifically of letting an eclipse user -- possibly via a plugin -- click a button to launch a build using my organization's build system). I don't want this process to stop when I stop the parent application, and I want to be able to "switch into it" later, as though I launched it from a command line. I've seen GNU screen described as good for most of what I'm asking for, but I'm not sure about the "launch the process from another application" part. Can this be done if the GUI application was itself launched from within screen? Can this be done if it wasn't? I'd be very interested in seeing how! Update: Prepending "screen" to a command line looks like a good way to start a process in screen from a shell, but I'm trying to find a way to do this without being taken straight into that session. I want to "send" the command to a screen session, where it will be started in a new window in that session.

  Hello, I was wondering, when is the right time or the correct project size to start using project management applications ( like Redmine or Trac ). I have a serious project, for now it's only me developing, but I use redmine to set my project versions, issues, and estimations. I think it's a good idea, because you never know when somebody else is going to join the team, and also allows me to organize myself effectively. I ask this question because I was Teaching Assistant at my university for one year in a row for a course, and I got questions about this very very often. While I'm a believer of the KISS principle, I think that learning to use this tools early is a win-win most of the time. I really believe that we can avoid this question to become argumentative, and that there's somewhat of a consensus about this issue, which I consider quite important in todays software development world. So, when is the right time ? what is the correct project/team size ?

• How do I start a XUL Runner application maximized?

  I've started developing my first app with XUL and I've run into a problem that I can't seem to solve. All I want to do is have my app start maximized. I've set the sizemode attribute to maximized on my top level window element but that has no effect. My prefs.js file has the following line: pref("toolkit.defaultChromeFeatures", "chrome,centerscreen,menubar,resizable,status,toolbar,scrollbars"); This also does not work. My window appears and it only has a close button (X) and does not have a minimize or maximize button. Any ideas???

• How to find control points for a BezierSegment given Start, End, and 2 Intersection Pts in C# - AKA

  Hi, I've been struggling looking for an understandable way to do this. I have four points, a StartPt, EndPoint, and Intersection points to represent the peak and valley in the bezier. The BezierSegment in C# requires start, controlPoint 1, controlPoint 2, endpoint - however I don't have any control points I only have these two points that lie along the bezier curves (i'm calling them intersection points above)... how can I calculate the two control points? Thanks in advance, this has been driving me crazy. There's some kind of explanation here: http://www.tinaja.com/glib/nubz4pts1.pdf but it's written in postscript and that language makes no sense to me at all - it's over my head.

• Can a signed Java Applet/Web Start manipulate content in a cross-site IFRAME?

  Is it possible for a signed Java Applet or Web Start app to write to the DOM of an IFRAME under a different domain? Does the fact that they're a signed applet/javaws allow them to ignore browsers' standard cross-browser security? If this does work, how well is it supported across the major browsers? Thanks! • Why do Lua arrays(tables) start at 1 instead of 0?

  Hi, I don't understand the rational behind the decision of this part of Lua. Why does indexing start at 1? I have read(as many others did) this great paper. It seems to me a strange corner of a language that is very pleasant to learn and program. Don't get me wrong, Lua is just great but there has to be an explanation somewhere. Most of what I found(on the web) is just saying the index starts at 1. Full stop. It would be very interesting to read what its designers said about the subject. Note that I am "very" beginner in Lua, I hope I am not missing something obvious about tables.
