  • PC doesn't POST with a certain model of PSU

    I have this PC with an Asus P5N32-E SLI motherboard and an Intel Q6600 CPU. I got a new RX-5300 PSU, but it didn't work. The motherboard power LED is on fine When I switch power on, the PC powers up briefly (0.5-1 sec) then shuts down From there on out when I switch power on, it stays on, all fans and components seem to be receiving power, but the motherboard won't POST. No video output, no PC speaker beeps, nothing If I turn the hard switch on the PSU off and then back on again, go to step 2; The PC turns on and then off immediately again, and on subsequent power-ups it stays on but won't POST I disconnected every component but the motherboard, CPU and PSU. Still nothing. I tried three other models of PSU on this PC, both of higher (600) and lower (<300) wattage than the 530 on the RX-5300 and they all work fine. At this point I was convinced the PSU was faulty so I returned it. When the replacement arrived, it behaved exactly the same. So two different units of RX-5300 both with the same symptoms, neither working with this motherboard + CPU. Yet, three other models of PSU work perfectly fine. The PC store couldn't reproduce my problem with the returned PSU. I tried resetting the CMOS with the jumper. I tried with both the 4 and 4+4 (with and without the extra +4 connected) CPU connectors (curiously the RX-5300 comes equipped with both). Could it be a statistical probability that I get two units of the same model of PSU that are faulty in the exact same manner? Could the RX-5300 model itself be somehow incompatible with this motherboard? I was under the impression that PSUs were pretty much universal so long as you have the wattage. Could the motherboard be broken in some such a way as to work with certain PSUs but not others? What's going on here?

    recently I found a video on the net ( a .mp4 file), and when I had it on my computer with Windows7, I noticed its thumbnail was not the average windows 7 video thumbnail (which looks like a piece of video film with a random picture from the movie), but a custom thumbnail! Looking in the file properties did not help find the correct button to change the thumbnail...so I just wonder how he did it!   • Type 1 Hypervisor on the desktop

    I have a powerful home PC, and I've used VirtualBox to run Linux distros in Windows (and vice versa). I'm interested in trying out a lightweight type 1 hypervisor to run all my operating systems (Windows 7, Debian, Arch) and was looking for suggestions of which to pick and how to implement this. From what I gather, a type 1 hypervisor is a lightweight OS which simply provides VM management functionality. Will I get reasonable performance under each guest OS? Can all the guest OSs have access to a shared data drive, or is is best to have a storage server in another guest OS and mount it over the virtual network? What about gaming, is this feasible, or will I realistically need to run Win7 on bare metal? I'd appreciate any input.

  • Project not publishing start/finish date for custom TFS work items

    I've got a TFS 2012 project set up with custom work items, that include Start and Finish date read-only fields (Microsoft.VSTS.Scheduling.StartDate and FinishDate). When I publish one of those custom work items from within Office Project, it does not populate those fields the same way as when I publish a Task work item (builtin TFS work item). I've looked at the transitions in the work items, and also the TFS project field mapping XML file but can't find anything that explains the difference in behaviour. What am I missing?

    I need help pointing me in the right direction for setting the ContentType returned by Apache for content produced by WordPress. I'm having trouble figuring out why WordPress is returning incorrect headers. Issue The specific problem is that our Wordpress blog pages are being downloaded as a file rather than displayed by Internet Explorer and Chrome v21. Content-Type: application/x-gzip is being returned by the server. I'm told that I should expect Content-Type: text/html. Background The URL is http://www.bitesizeirishgaelic.com/blog/.

  • Turn 2 USB type A ports (receptacles) into an extension cable with 2 type A receptacles using Linux?

    I'm currently trying to connect 2 USB devices together, but both ends are type A plugs. Before I buy a physical extension cords with 2 type A receptacles, I'd like to know if I can connect these 2 devices together at all by passing data "transparently" through a Linux box with = 2 USB ports. I'm actually trying to connect a keyboard to an Android phone, and I want to first try if it can work by using a Linux box as a "virtual" USB extension cord. Has anybody done something like this before? Thanks!

  • Feedback on iterating over type-safe enums

    In response to the earlier SO question "Enumerate over an enum in C++", I came up with the following reusable solution that uses type-safe enum idiom. I'm just curious to see the community feedback on my solution. This solution makes use of a static array, which is populated using type-safe enum objects before first use. Iteration over enums is then simply reduced to iteration over the array.   • Can web apps allow fast data-typists to "type-ahead"?

    In some data entry contexts, I've seen data typists, type really fast and know so well the app they use, and have a mechanic quality in their work so that they can "type ahead", ie continue typing and "tab-bing" and "enter-ing" faster than the display updates, so that in many occasions they are typing in the data for the next form before it draws itself. Then when this next entry form appears, their keystrokes fill the text boxes and they continue typing, selecting etc. In contexts like this, this speed is desirable, since this persons are really productive. I think this "type ahead of time" is only possible in desktop apps, but I may be wrong. My question is whether this way of handling the keyboard buffer (which in desktop apps require no extra programming) is achievable in web apps, or is this impossible because of the way web apps work, handle sessions, etc (network latency and the overhead of generating new web pages ) ? Edit: By "type ahead" I mean "keyboard type ahead" (typing faster than the next entry form can load), not suggets-as-you-type-like-google type ahead. Typeahead is a feature of computers and software (and some typewriters) that enables users to continue typing regardless of program or computer operation—the user may type in whatever speed he or she desires, and if the receiving software is busy at the time it will be called to handle this later. Often this means that keystrokes entered will not be displayed on the screen immediately. This programming technique for handling user what is known as a keyboard buffer.

    I bought a branding new Galaxy Note II and I tried to mount its storage to my ubuntu laptop. As you know, Android 4.0+ uses MTP by default. Android 4.1 doesn't support USB Mass Storage anymore! So I have to use MTP to open my files via USB. I followed this article to get it work.   • How can I include my derived class type name in the serialized JSON?

    Sometimes working with the js Serializer is easy, sometimes its not.   When I attempt to serialize an object that is derived from a base, the serializer decided whether or not to include the type name. When its present, the type name is represented by a ___type attribute in the serialized json like this: {"d":{"__type":"Commerce.Integration.Surfaces.OrderCreationRequest","RepId":0}} The missing type name is a problem if I intend to ship the object back into a web method that needs to deserialize the object.   Without the Type name, serialization will fail and result in a ugly web exception. The solution, which feels more like a work-around, is to explicitly tell the serializer to ALWAYS generate the type name for each derived type.  You make this declaration by adding a [GenerateScriptType())] attribute for each derived type to the top of the web page declaration.   For example, assuming I had 3 derivations of OrderCreationRequest; PersonalOrderCreationRequest, CompanyOrderCreationRequest, InternalOrderCreationRequestion, the code-behind for my web page would be decorated as follows: [GenerateScriptType(typeof(PersonalOrderCreationRequest))] [GenerateScriptType(typeof(CompanyOrderCreationRequest))] [GenerateScriptType(typeof(InternalOrderCreationRequest))] public partial class OrderMethods : Page { ... } With the type names generated in the serialized JSON, the serializer can successfully deserialize instances of any of these types passed into a web method.     Just today I've started using Drupal for a site I'm designing/developing. For my own site http://jwm-art.net I wrote a user-unfriendly CMS in PHP. My brief experience with Drupal is making me want to convert from the CMS I wrote.   • Why does the page posts take so long?

    Hi! I am having some problems with some page post backs that take a loooong time to execute. If I do a "appcmd list requests" I can get something like this: REQUEST "79000001800004e3" (url:POST /dir/file.aspx, time:87219 msec, client:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, stage:ExecuteRequestHandler, module:ManagedPipelineHandler) REQUEST "8600000080002f82" (url:POST /dir/file.aspx, time:61391 msec, client:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, stage:AcquireRequestState, module:Session) REQUEST "5e00010280000420" (url:POST /dir/file.aspx, time:21047 msec, client:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, stage:AcquireRequestState, module:Session) It's one particular file that causes the problem (dir/file.aspx in this case). It comes from the same IP-adress. And the first on is from ManagedPipelineHandler module and the two after that from Session module. I do not have any details about the web browser, or anything more about the client for that matter. I have looked for sql dead locks and did not find any. There are no long running sql queries at all. Do you have any idea of what can be the problem? Regards.

  • Accessing a dictionary value by custom object value in Python?

    So I have a square that's made up of a series of points. At every point there is a corresponding value. What I want to do is build a dictionary like this: class Point: def __init__(self, x, y): self._x = x self._y = y square = {} for x in range(0, 5): for y in range(0, 5): point = Point(x,y) square[point] = None However, if I later create a new point object and try to access the value of the dictionary with the key of that point it doesn't work.. square[Point(2,2)] Traceback (most recent call last): File "<pyshell#19>", line 1, in <module> square[Point(2,2)] KeyError: <__main__.Point instance at 0x02E6C378> I'm guessing that this is because python doesn't consider two objects with the same properties to be the same object?   • Should I use Drupal or Kohana-type framework for a web "application"

    The debate is that I need a PHP Framework/Drupal with the flexibility to add custom features to a potentially large application (web and with an api). However, with a framework, like Kohana, I see myself tackling and re-inventing the wheel with the simple stuff like account management and cms stuff. Account management and quick data collection, like fast form creation, are tedious in Kohana but appear incredible simple in Drupal. On the other hand, based on my limited Drupal experience, I doubt building rapid custom "features" and allowing users to create "groups" and to manage their own roles within those groups is something Drupal can easily accomplish. To simplify, is Drupal capable of true Web Applications; where the application is a service and provides custom results to each user? Can it provide a dashboard-like interface for users to change their settings or preferences? Can it aggregate data from particular users to provide better results/info to others? If so, please point me to some knowledge :-)

  • Writing a custom auth system (like the default django auth system), use it to generate tables in DB

    Hay all, I've been reading up on middleware and how to use it with a context object. I want to write a simple middleware class which i can use on my own applications, it will essentially be a cut down version of the django one. The problem i seem to have is that if i have INSTALLED_APPS = ('django.contrib.my_auth') in the settings file, all is well. I've also added MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES = ('django.contrib.my_auth.middleware.MyAuthMiddleware') in it and everything is fine. My question is, how would i make my middleware automatically generate tables from a models.py module, much like how the django auth does when i run manage.py syncdb? thanks

    Hello I am using MOSS with ADS. I want to display Terms of Use page before the user can login into SharePoint with two button i.e. "Accept","Decline". If user select "Accept" he will be directed to sharepoint site, if not to our companies intranet front page. This will be applicable for the current session. ie. If the user has signed off, then it should prompt the terms of use again when user hits the MOSS site but once accepted user should not get this page again until he/she signs off. Please advise.   • Why does Firefox + My code Destroys FireFox refresh

    I am soo angry right now. I lost hours and i dont know why this happens. Its a semi rant but i'll try to keep it short My code would not work, even after refreshing it was broken I fixed my code or so i thought because it stops working without me changing anything (you would think i am imagining this...) I somehow decide to make a new window or tab i run my code and verifies it works. I write more code and see everything is broken again I write test in a new window and see my code does work I see my code doesnt work and firebug DOES NOT HELP I notice when i create a new tab everything works I realize refreshing does not work and i MUST make a new tab for my code to work. Then i knew instantly what the problem was. I modify a display:none textbox but i set the values incorrectly. I cant see it because it is hidden. Now some of you might say its my fault because when doing a refresh all of the data may be cache. But here is the kicker. I was using POST data. I posted in between of the refresh each and everytime. Whats the point of using POST when the same data is cached and use anyways? If theres no chance for a search engine to follow a block user get link then why should i bother making anything post when security or repeat actions are not an issue? POST didnt seem to do anything.
