• Finding the closest grid coordinate to the mouse onclick with javascript/jQuery

  What I'm trying to do is make a grid of invisible coordinates on the page equally spaced. I then want a <div> to be placed at whatever grid coordinate is closest to the pointer when onclick is triggered. Here's the rough idea: I have the tracking of the mouse coordinates and the placing of the <div> worked out fine. What I'm stuck with is how to approach the problem of the grid of coordinates. First of all, should I have all my coordinates in an array which I then compare my onclick coordinate to? Or seeing as my grid coordinates follow a rule, could I do something like finding out which coordinate that is a multiple of whatever my spacing is is closest to the onclick coordinate? And then, where do I start with working out which grid point coordinate is closest? What's the best way of going about it? Thanks!

• Excel validation range limits

  When Excel saves a file, it attempts to combine identical Validation settings into a single rule with multiple ranges. This creates one of three issues, depending on the file type you choose to save: When saving as a standard Excel file (Office 2000 BIFF), a maximum of 1024 non-contiguous ranges that can have the same validation setting. When saving as a SpreadsheetML (Office 2002/2003 XML) file, you are limited to the number of non-contiguous ranges that can be represented, comma-delimited in R1C1 format, in 1024 characters. When saving as an Open Office XML (Office 2007 *.xlsx), there is a maximum of 511 non-contiguous ranges that can have the same validation setting. (I don't have Office 2007, I'm using the file converter for Office 2003). Once you bust any of these limits, the remaining ranges with the same Validation settings have their Validation settings wiped. For (1) and (3), Excel warns you that it can't save all of the formatting, but for (2) it does not.

• can lapply not modify variables in a higher scope

  I often want to do essentially the following: mat <- matrix(0,nrow=10,ncol=1) lapply(1:10, function(i) { mat[i,] <- rnorm(1,mean=i)}) But, I would expect that mat would have 10 random numbers in it, but rather it has 0. (I am not worried about the rnorm part. Clearly there is a right way to do that. I am worry about affecting mat from within an anonymous function of lapply) Can I not affect matrix mat from inside lapply? Why not? Is there a scoping rule of R that is blocking this?

• Release a retain UIImage property loaded via imageNamed?

  In my class object i've defined a (nonatomic, retain) property for UIImage. I assigned this property with an image loaded via [UIImage imageNamed:@"file.png"]; If at some point I want to reassign this property to another image, should I have to release the prior reference? I am confused because by the retain property I know i should release it. But because imageNamed is a convenience method (does not use alloc), im not sure what rule to apply here. • Should a given URI in a RESTful architecture always return the same response?

  This is kind of a follow-up question to this one. So is having a unique response for any given URI a core tenant of RESTful architecture? A lot of discussion here tends that direction, but I haven't seen it anywhere as a "hard and fast" rule. I understand the value of it (for caching, crawling, passing links, etc), but I also see things like the twitter API violate it (A request to http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/friends_timeline.xml will vary based on the username given), and I understand there are times when it may be necessary--not to mention that a chronologically paged resource will also change as new elements are added. Should I strive for varied responses from the same URI to be eliminated altogether, or do I just accept that sometimes it isn't practical, and as long as I minimize its occurrence, I'll be in decent shape.

• Seam page navigation with includes

  Hello, I'm using seam page navigation rules. and did not experience any problem with adding rules which redirect from one page to another. But since I designed my page views using those redirection simply don't happen anymore for those pages. Tried to define the rule to the view that gets included, then to the view that includes the others (which to me was making more sense) but none work. Is there anything special about page navigation in seam using included view-id ? I'm using jsf, xhtml as my page views. Thanks

  Hey all, I'd like to do the following: If a user gets to a url or types it in, and it is along the lines of any the following: /path/path/path /path /path/path/ I would like htaccess to forward them to that url + /index.htm before triggering a 404. Also, I would like to ignore this rule for certain paths. • VB6: Question about version numbers of dependent OCXs

  Is it important for a VB6 app to refer to certain OCX versions? I have noticed that if I put my VB6 app code through the IDE on one machine then the form files will refer to different version of some OCXs than if I use another machine. What is the rule of thumb with this? Is it safe to assume that most of these old OCX versions will be compatible with each other and so I shouldn't worry? Some of the OCXs in question are: RICHTX32.OCX v1.1 and v1.2 COMCTL32.OCX v1.2 and v1.3

  Am rather new to this world of htaccess redirects.Am trying to force all redirects in my Zend MVC to my https but I get a requested URL not found error on requests that dont go though the index controller Example https://www.example.com/auth/register gives a requested URL /auth/register not found error. However if I remove the https redirect rule it works fine over http. If I adjust the URL to https://www.example.com/index.php/auth/register it works fine. The URL https://www.example.com/index/faq works just fine since it goes through the index controller. • Can a binary tree or tree be always represented in a Database as 1 table and self-referencing?

  I didn't feel this rule before, but it seems that a binary tree or any tree (each node can have many children but children cannot point back to any parent), then this data structure can be represented as 1 table in a database, with each row having an ID for itself and a parentID that points back to the parent node. That is in fact the classical Employee - Manager diagram: one boss can have many people under him... and each person can have n people under him, etc. This is a tree structure and is represented in database books as a common example as a single table Employee.

• ICalendar parser in PHP that supports timezones

  I am looking for a PHP class that can parse an ICalendar (ICS) file and correctly handle timezones. I already created an ICS parser myself but it can only handle timezones known to PHP (like 'Europe/Paris'). Unfortunately, ICS file generated by Evolution (default calendar software of Ubuntu) does not use default timezone IDs. It exports events with its a specific timezone ID exporting also the full definition of the timezone: daylight saving dates, recurrence rule and all the hard stuff to understand about timezones. This is too much for me. Since it was only a small utility for my girlfriend, I won't have time to investigate further the ICalendar specification and create a full blown ICalendar parser myself. So is there any known implementation in PHP of ICalendar file format that can parse timezones definitions?

  I'm trying to do url rewriting with Lighttpd. I have what I need partially working. Right now I have this: http://domain.com/name/a/123 which rewrites to http://domain.com/name/a.php?pid=123 I do this with this rewrite-once rule: "^/name/a/([^/]+)"= "/name/a.php?pid=$1" That php page has external resources that are not getting rewritten such as the JavaScript and CSS files. • Integrating Drools with JBossESB

  In recent weeks I've been researching Drools amongst other CEP/Rule Engines and I believe I would like to use Drools. I also have an JBossESB which is responsible for routing of messages between different services. Unless I am totally missing the boat, I can't for the life of me see how I would get data into Drools via JBossESB. Inside of my ESB I have data (facts) that needs to be monitored and routed correctly (some of the data properties also needs to be modified based on other properties in each of the facts, I figured using Drools (a combination of Fusion and Expert) would be the best way to handle this, however, I don't really see in any of the JBoss (or other) documentation how I would get that done. Is this a cart-before-the-horse situation? Am I totally missing the boat somewhere? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Why is django admin not accepting Nullable foreign keys?

  Here is a simplified version of one of my models: class ImportRule(models.Model): feed = models.ForeignKey(Feed) name = models.CharField(max_length=255) feed_provider_category = models.ForeignKey(FeedProviderCategory, null=True) target_subcategories = models.ManyToManyField(Subcategory) This class manages a rule for importing a list of items from a feed into the database. The admin system won't let me add an ImportRule without selecting a feed_provider_category despite it being declared in the model as nullable. The database (SQLite at the moment) even checks out ok: >>> .schema ... CREATE TABLE "someapp_importrule" ( "id" integer NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY, "feed_id" integer NOT NULL REFERENCES "someapp_feed" ("id"), "name" varchar(255) NOT NULL, "feed_provider_category_id" integer REFERENCES "someapp_feedprovidercategory" ("id"), ); ... I can create the object in the python shell easily enough: f = Feed.objects.get(pk=1) i = ImportRule(name='test', feed=f) i.save() ...but the admin system won't let me edit it, of course. How can I get the admin to let me edit/create objects without specifying that foreign key?

• What build param(s) to use so VS 2010 can gen .obj & link .objs but NOT create an .exe?

  Question title pretty much asks it all. I know I could set the project to be a .lib build and have it fail to build/link a .lib .... and the .objs tend to be in the appropriate config dir That seems like a shi*-a** backdoor way to get VS to gen objs Is there a flag/param I can set somewhere in the property sheet properties/options for Visual Studio so it links what it needs to & gens the respective objs for each source file? It's so freaking easy to just gen object files using gcc (and link in appropriate lib routines WITHOUT creating an executable) ... I'm sure I could also hack up a custom build rule but that seems like overkill [and since I'm not up to speed on the build rules for whatever version of make VS 2010 is using it's easier to ask someone else here for the simple solution]

For example, assuming the following knowledge base: cat(tom). animal(X) :- cat(X). , is there a way to obtain every possible information about tom (or at least all the facts that are explicitly stated in the base)? I understand that a query like this is not possible: ?- Pred(tom). so I thought I could write a rule that would deduce the correct information: meta(Object, Predicate) :- Goal =.. [Predicate, Object], call(Goal). so that I could write queries such as ?- meta(tom, Predicate). but this does not work because arguments to call are not sufficiently instantiated. So basically my question is: is this at all possible, or is Prolog not design to provide this kind of information? And if it is not possible, why?

  I'm working on an InfoPath form that's going to be run with InfoPath Forms Services on a SharePoint server. For a number of reasons -- mostly so that the customer can update the form without involving an administrator -- this can't be a form containing .NET code. The form has a repeating group, and we have users who are a bit confused as to how to add and delete items from the repeating section. I've looked all over the Internets, but haven't been able to find a way to do this without adding a code project to the form. Is there any way to write a rule or do something else to make a button that adds an item to a repeating section?

• Will the URL /nosuchpage get routed via my ASP.NET MVC application?

  [I'm trying to figure out the reason why I'm having another problem, and this question is part of the puzzle.] I have an MVC 2 website that has routing set up so that URLs such as /Customer/23/Order/47 get handled by various controllers. I do not have a rule that would match, for example, /nosuchpage and in my Cassini environment a request for that URL will trigger my Application_Error code, which lets me log the error and show a friendly response. However, when I deployed this website on IIS7 using integrated mode, my Application_Error is not triggered, and IIS shows its own 404 message. No matter what I've tried, I can't get Application_Error to fire. Now I'm thinking: is the reason it doesn't fire because the request is not getting routed via my application? Either because I didn't explicitly set up a catch-all route, or because the file-extension fools it into thinking it should use the "static file handler" (whatever that is)? Should I expect my Application_Error to be invoked?

• How to name an event handler of a private variable in Vb.Net following FxCop rules and Vb.Net standa

  Hello, On one side, in Vb.Net when you add an event handler to an object the created method is named: <NameOfTheObject>_<NameOfTheMethod>. As I like to have consistent syntax I always follow this rule when creating event handlers by hand. On the other side when I create private variables I prefix them with m_ as this is a common thing used by the community, in C# people use to put _ at the beginning of a variable but this is no CLS compliant. At the end, when I create event handlers for events raised by private variables I end with Subs like m_myVariable_MyEvent. Code Analysis (Fx Cop) is complainig about this way of naming because the method does not start with uppercase and because the _, so the question is: What naming standards do you follow when creating event handlers by hand that follow the Fxcop rules if any?   Hi Folks, I'm complaining about the growth of jQuery tagged questions at stackoverflow. There are so many people who ask, 'How to implement a specific plugin?' or 'How to use that plugin?' which makes me kinda sick. IMO: If you Tag a question to jQuery, javascript or C, it should be a question about the language itself and not some 'goofy' little plugin. Best case scenario, Tag those questions with jquery-plugins. I know I'm breaking my own rule along with this post, but I just realized that trend and I'm really interested in other opinions about that. Kind Regards --Andy
