• Setting primary internet connection and network on notebook

  I have installed Ubuntu on a notebook that I have configured to connect to the internet using an Iburst USB modem. This works 100% after a bit of configuring. I now have a desktop pc that I have installed ubuntu on, and would like to connect the two with a router. I bought a router with wifi, and would like to connect my notebook to the other computer using wifi, while still keeping the internet working with the usb modem. The problem is that as soon as the wifi connect, the internet connection dies. Is there a way to force ubuntu to get internet access through the usb modem, but use wifi to connect to the network? I am pretty new to ubuntu so any help would be appreciated. I also have a samsung galaxy tab that I would like to connect to the internet through usb modem via the wifi, so is there also a way to share that internet connection with the other computers on the network?   Possible Duplicates: How to explain programming to a non-programmer? Getting non-programmers to understand the development process I was asked a question today that made me think. Here's a middle age person who apparently knows nothing about computers besides this specific application they use (I actually suggested to use Calculator, rather than hunt around the whole office for a hand-held one which had mysteriously vanished, and the fact that the computer could be used for such tasks was apparently news), asking me to explain what programming is about. In general. I tried, but am not sure I managed very well. But it got me thinking. What would be a good way to describe programming, or more generally speaking systems development, to a person like that? How have you responded being put in a similar situation?

• host and share files in my hosting

  I currently have a domain+hosting with unlimited hosting space for our website. On the other hand, I use Dropbox to share our organizational files and photos between about 10 users. The thing is that sharing photos uses too much space for what a free Dropbox account offers. So I am thinking of taking advantage of my hosting space, but using FTP seems not to be ideal for users who are not too skilled with computers. In addition, it doesn't handle versions in case some user makes a mess of it. And using a public FTP to upload and giving them only download permission doesn't seem a good idea as I am only the CTO. So what I want is basically to implement a local Dropbox for a few users, but I'd prefer something that is not too complex to install/mantain. Thank you a lot.

• How to control an Ubuntu PC from another Ubuntu PC over Internet?

  There are two Ubuntu PCs called A and B. A and B are connected to the Internet using two separated Internet connections. (In my case, two mobile broadband connections ppp0 x2 ) Each connection has a unique & static public IP address. What I need is to control A computer's cursor, using B computer's mouse, over the Internet. In both computers, I have allowed other users to control my computer in Desktop Sharing preferences, as below: When I try to connect to A from the B using Remmina Remote Desktop Client, it refuses to connect after trying for a while. These are my settings: I expect this to be done from an available open source software, not from TeamViewer. I found this guide harder to understand. Please provide me clear instructions... • Broadcom BCM4313 working, but terribly slow

  Hi all, I've installed ubuntu on a Asus 1015 netbook. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless adapter, which i had to install with the Additional Drivers application. It apparently installed fine and connects to our wireless network, but it only works at a "funny" speed range that goes from 367Bytes to a peak of 3Kb in its best moments. I know for sure the problem is neither the network nor the hardware. Network speeds are normal under windows on this laptop and in other computers with ubuntu aswell. lspci says the card is a BCM4313 model, but the Addittional Drivers Manager says these packecege contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322 based hardware seems like it installed the wrong driver... Is there anything I can do? I'm not concerned about compiling the driver or stuff like that, but I'm not sure on where to start... any help or guidance will be very, very appreciated.

• Synaptics touchpad stops working randomly

  I have two laptops. One dell Vostro and other Vaio Z. Both have Synaptics (Yes, I have checked, and the original drivers were from Synaptics as well). On both laptops, the touchpad scrolling stops working at some arbitrary time and nothing seems to solve it except a reboot. Sometimes, it randomly starts working again. I have downloaded all latest drivers from OEM. Interestingly, when I run a program as Administrator, scrolling works in that window only. This problem is very odd. It happens without any reason and I've not been able to find a fix for more than a year. I have seen some unusual suggestions on forums (e.g., to "restore windows to a previous working state") but never any fix that solves this issue properly. I have tried installing latest drivers and I DO NOT want to restore windows to a previous working configuration. OS: Windows 7 64 bit Professional (Sony Vaio Z - VPCZ128GG) Windows 7 32 bit Professional (Dell) Edit: Temporary solution is to uninstall the synaptics driver and let Windows 7 use its default built in one. However, I really prefer the Synaptic driver because it activates the scroll button rather than the mouse wheel (useful in some apps such as MS Photo Editor)

• Text reverses on remote gnome session

  I have two computers running 10.4 . The first machine is a wired desktop with sshd. The second is a wifi connected laptop with the ssh client. When I use my laptop to bring up a remote gnome session to my desktop all the text gets reversed. Steps: 1) login as a user on the laptop to activate the wifi with a stored key. 2) goto a console Ctrl-Alt F1 3) do a xterm -- :1 to bring up a blank graphic session 4) ssh -Y user@desktopmachine gnome-session This shows reversed text and messes up the keyboard so I can't type

• Dell XPS 15 L502X hard drive Partition

  I have a situation here. I got my new Dell XPS 15 Laptop. The configuration of hard drive is as below : Volume 1: (OEM Partition): 133MB Volume 2: OS (C:): 685.25 GB Volume 3: Recovery : 13.25 GB Now, I am trying to re-partition my C Drive to have a C: drive with 100 GB and a new drive with 585 GB. Earlier, I tried using the Windows 7 Disk Management to shrink and extend the volume. That lead to the OS and hard drive not working. Dell Tech support tried to fix the issue, but they were not able to fix the issue online. Later a Dell Technician arrived my place, and replaced the hard drive with a new hard drive. Please help me re-partition the C: Drive with 100 GB, and new D drive with 585 GB. I don't want to lose my Recovery Partition. SOLUTION As Suggested by KCotreau below , I have done exactly. I have resized the C drive to 100 GB. And then applied the changes. Windows got restarted. On the boot screen, the partition was taking place. It took around 30 mins ( approx. ). Once after restart, I can see my C drive is 100 GB. Now opened the Easeus again. And created a new partition for the free space ( 585 GB ) this took 10 seconds to create. • How do I use apt-get to update to the latest kernel?

  My current kernel is 3.2.0-26 (my main computer) while on another of my Ubuntu computers, with which I didn't fiddle with unofficial updates, it's 3.2.0-30. Yet the Update manager on my main computer doesn't show available kernel updates. It shows other updates though. I suspect is due to the fact that in the past I installed multiple mainline kernel versions (not recommended versions), up to 3.5* series. What I'm after: Either: Fix automatic kernel updates. Or: Learn about a way to check for the latest official ubuntu kernel version and get it manually (I know how to install kernels from debs) What I have already tried: Uninstalled unused kernels including "the generic one without a number" as per http://askubuntu.com/a/103875/29347 and then also https://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/ubuntu-cleanup-how-to-remove-all-unused-linux-kernel-headers-images-and-modules/

  Im thinking strongly about starting to use Ubuntu. I am tired of windows and how every computer i get/have runs with it. I'm not real good with computers, but I'm good enough for my needs. Ive used Ubuntu in the past of a friends computer and always pretty impressed with what he could make it do, look like, and the fact that was able to run windows along with it. His computer never crashed or got viruses. That sounds like something i could get used to. Id like to here what some of you think.Also I keep reading about a live cd that allows you to run Ubuntu with windows to basically try it and not have to commit. If so how can I get that. i havent been able to find it anywhere.

• How to create Windows Vista/Windows 7 Startup disk or Rescue disk or system restore points on a CD?

  Hello, I have two laptops, one having Windows-Vista home premium and other one having Windows-7 professional. Both versions of OS are OEM installs(pre-installed when I bought the laptop) and I do not have the Windows Installation disks for them. usually the installation disks provide a repair option in case one needs to repair/rescue a improper windows installation. But since I dont have the installation disks, I want to create rescue disks/startup disks for these. My questions are : 1] How to create a system rescue disk/startup disk on a CD from these two versions of Windows? 2] Doesn't the system restore points which Vista/Windows-7 create, cannot be created on a CD disk instead of hard-disk? 3] If I have a manual backup of my windows registry, in which I have exported all the registry to a file and I have that file on a CD, how to restore that registry back to the windows installation which might not be booting up properly due to bad registry problem. EDIT: 4]Is there any way to use these system restore points directly during bootup of the laptop, if windows does cannot boot properly due to problem. First laptop is HP Pavillion dv6646 and second one is Sony VAIO VCPEE series. thank you. -AD

  --All this is about terminal-- I know some of you will laugh, but I'm trying to install Arch Linux, since I want to learn as much as I can about linux system and how it works. I want to be an expert (maybe in 1000 years, but that's okay :)). The problem is that even tho I know how to do some stuff under linux I'm having a hard time with those names about hard drives, usb, cd, blah blah and how to access them. Big introduction and no question yet, but the purpose is for you to see where I'm standing and give me as many details as possible. And here's the question: How can I put the .iso file in a usb that will run on computers startup and allow me to install Arch linux? I obtained my associates degree as a programmer/analyst a couple years ago and I know a good amount about programming on the .NET framework. I'm even certified on the .NET 4 framework as a web application developer. However, since I was only able to obtain my associates degree, I was deprived at my college on the low-level basics and operations of computers and basic computer science information. I'm really interesting in learning about the low-level operations of a computer and in programming (bytes, bits, memory management, etc.) Can anyone recommend any good computer science books for someone who is decently experienced in programming? • Best way to do large XNA animations?

  What's the best way to have large animations in XNA 4.0? I have created a spritesheet with the sprite being 250x400 (more of an image than a sprite but hey ho) and there are approximately 45 frames in the animation. This causes problems for XNA as it says that the maximum filesize for Reach is 2048. I'd rather not change to hidef as I heard that means that your game is less compatible with some computers and systems so does anyone have any idea what the best thing I could do is? The only thing I could come up with is to have a list of textures to flick through but that's not ideal.

• Connection manager detects network but won't connect

  I've just installed 12.04 on my home desktop. Because of where it's located, in order not to have my children tripping over cat5 cable, I've got a cheap 802.11n USB device plugged in, which uses a Realtek 8192CU chip. The house wifi is protected with WPA2. Ubuntu's Network Manager detects the network, but connecting to it just times out and asks for the password again. I'm sure I'm using the correct password. No other computers on the house network are having any difficulty. This device previously worked correctly with both Windows 7 and OpenBSD in the same machine. The linux-firmware package is installed (from the disc) at version 1.79, and /lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8192cufw.bin is present. dmesg|grep rtl only shows the "loading firmware" message. I've tried Google, but I apparently can't find the right set of words to plug in, because I haven't found anything related (lots of "doesn't work at all," but nothing matching my circumstances). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How to sync calendar with android without google?

  Hi folks, is there a way to sync an Ubuntu calendar application like Thunderbird Lightning or Evolution with an Android device without using google-calendar? At the moment I am syncing my Thunderbird-Lightning calendars on different computers via Dropbox, what is much more reliable than google-calendar. Another big advantage over google-calendar is, that I can access my appointments offline as well, since the calendar files are synced onto the harddrive of each computer by Dropbox. I'd like to access those calendars via my android device as well. The Dropbox-app for android does not support automatic syncing yet, so it seems like I have to use another service. Apart from that I guess I need to know an android app, that can access a calendar-file stored in ics-format. Thanks in advance YSN

• All video players display black screen.

  I'm working in 10.04 Lucid. All my video players (Movie Player and VLC) and the preview windows in editors (OpenShot and Pitivi) will only display a black screen when playing a video. The sound is fine and the videos work fine on other computers. I have tried multiple formats from varying sources .MOV taken from old ffmpeg projects, .AVI straight from a camera, .MP4 using h.264 from OpenShot on another system, .OGV from a gtk-recordmydesktop session on this very computer. I even get a pure black screen in the viewer when starting a remote session in VNC. This box has a GeForce 8400 GS using the Nvidia drivers in case it may be a card problem or setting.

• Help with Kodak esp 3250 printer driver on Lubuntu 12.1 SOLVED!

  First my system: pentium 4 -don't remember the speed-, 1g ram, dual boot to separate physical drives, Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 second my lan: I have four computers operating for the same printer. 1. Intel quad core i5, 4g ram, running Windoze 7 64 bit, printer connected and shared from here. Kodak ESP 3250 2. Gateway 17" laptop running Windoze 7 32bit 3. Asus tablet (small laptop) running Lumbutu 12.1 4. My dual boot system running Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 The problem: I downloaded c2esp_25c-1_i386.deb, tried to install it using DEBI Package Installer, it loads the files, looks for cups driver and ends with an error: "Dependancy is not satisfiable: libcupsdriver1 (=1.4.0)" What do I do now? Is there some place that I can get the correct cups driver? further information: The Asus tablet was running Ubuntu 12.1 (very slowly and with a few crashes) and could print from the lan printer with no problems. • MAAS. Adding nodes

  Can anybody help me with MAAS installation? I installed it on 1 of my computers, configured DHCP server and now 3 PCs are in their own private network. I tried to add node via PXE image, but "Can not apply stage final, no datasource found! Likely bad things to come!" error comes after giving me option to log in. Then I tried to add node via web interface, but after adding it node's status is always "commisioning". So what should I do know? Any help is appreciated. Thank you P.S.
