• Word documents very slow to open over network, but fine when opened locally - on one machine

  Windows XP, Word 2003, patched. The issue is happening with several Word documents stored on a network drive. The Word documents are clearly a bit wonky (i.e. one is 675k, but if you copy everything but the last paragraph marker into a new document, the new document is only 30k). But that's only part of the problem. On one weird machine, and one machine only, it takes ~20 seconds to open these Word documents from the network drive. Copy the file to C: on that werid machine? Opens immediately. Go to other machines (that are very similar - same patch level, etc.) and open the same document from the network? Opens immediately. Delete normal.dot? 20 seconds. Login with a different user on the weird machine? 20 seconds. Plug wonky machine into a different network port? 20 seconds. So the problem appears to be hardware related (i.e. wonky internal NIC) or related to a setting that is not profile specific. Any ideas? "Scrubbing" all the documents isn't ideal for several reasons. This is driving me nuts because I swear I ran into this before many years ago and eventually figured it out. But I appear to have lost my notes.

• Why are symbolic links not working in MySQL?

  I'm having an issue, I searched a lot but I'm not sure if it's related to a previous security patch. On the last version of MySQL on Debian Lenny ( 5.0.51a-24 ) I need to share one table between two db, those two db are in the same path ( /var/lib/mysql/db1 & db2 ). I created symbolic links for db2 pointing to the table in db1. When I query the same table from db2 I get this : 'ERROR 1030 (HY000): Got error 140 from storage engine' This is how it looks : test-lan:/var/lib/mysql/test3# ls -alh drwx------ 2 mysql mysql 4.0K 2010-08-30 13:28 . drwxr-xr-x 6 mysql mysql 4.0K 2010-08-30 13:29 .. lrwxrwxrwx 1 mysql mysql 28 2010-08-30 13:28 blbl.frm -> /var/lib/mysql/test/blbl.frm lrwxrwxrwx 1 mysql mysql 28 2010-08-30 13:28 blbl.MYD -> /var/lib/mysql/test/blbl.MYD lrwxrwxrwx 1 mysql mysql 28 2010-08-30 13:28 blbl.MYI -> /var/lib/mysql/test/blbl.MYI -rw-rw---- 1 mysql mysql 65 2010-08-30 13:24 db.opt I really need those symlinks, is there a way to make them working like before ? • Format CD-rom on Windows 7 that Windows 95 can read

  I pulled out my ancient Pentium 100Mhz running Windows 95 to play a game from 1996. This game has a critical bug in it that requires a patch. The problem is, the computer has no way to connect to the Internet or to the LAN. I tried burning a CD-rom on my Windows 7 PC to run on the Win95 PC, but it doesn't even recognize that there's a disc in the drive. I did some research, and apparently Windows 95 can't read UDF format. All the solutions recommend, of course, downloading a driver or fix or somesuch, which is my entire problem in the first place. I tried formatting the CD-rom on my Win7 PC, but all the format choices are versions of UDF. Is there a way to get Windows 7 to format in way that is compatible with Windows 95? EDIT: I think the problem may be that I only have CD-RWs. I think a regular CD-R might work, but I can't find any in the house. I'll see if I can scrounge one up and try that.

• Set default MySQL connect charset for PHP (in RHEL)?

  We're running a hundred or so legacy PHP websites on an older server which runs Gentoo Linux. When these sites were built latin1 was still the common charset, both in PHP and MySQL. To make sure those older sites used latin1 by default, while still allowing newer sites to use utf8 (our current standard), we set the default connect charset in php.ini: mysql.connect_charset = latin1 mysqli.connect_charset = latin1 pdo_mysql.connect_charset = latin1 Specific more modern sites could override this in their bootstrapping code with: <?php mysql_set_charset("utf8", $dsn ); ...and all was well. Now the server is overloaded and we're no longer with that hoster, so we're moving all these sites to a faster server at our standard hoster, which uses RHEL 5 as their OS of choice. In setting up this new server I discover to my surprise that the *.connect_charset directives are a Gentoo specific patch to PHP, and RHEL's version of PHP doesn't recognize them! Now how do I set PHP to connect to MySQL with the latin1 charset? I thought about setting a default in my.cnf but would prefer not to force every app and client to default to latin1. Our policy is to use utf8, and we'd like to restrict the exception to PHP only. Also, converting every legacy site to properly use utf8 is not doable since many are of the touch 'm and you break 'm kind. We simply don't have the time to go fix them all. How would I set a default mysql/mysqli/pdo_mysql connection charset to latin1 for PHP, while still allowing individual scripts to override this to utf8 with mysql_set_charset()?

• Geocaching - World wide treasure hunt

  I'm not quite sure how I came across this topic but actually I find it absolutely interesting, challenging and most of all a great fun for the family and friends. The interesting part is for sure that you can follow other peoples treasures and their preferred locations where a cache might be hidden. Of course, it wont be easy to find a cache after all. Sometimes there are even 'mystery caches' which have either riddles, further instructions or little brain games for you in order to find the actual cache - that's the challenge. And last but not least, those caches are hidden outdoor. A great experience to explore nature either on your own, or your family especially with children, or as a treasure hunting pack with a couple of friends. What is geocaching? It's a high-tech outdoor treasure hunting game that's a great way to explore the world with friends, family or on your own. Participants use GPS-enabled devices to locate hidden containers called geocaches. There are over one million geocaches hidden around the world today, waiting for you to find them. They also provide a video channel on YouTube. Which equipment do I need? Any GPS-enabled device is sufficient to go onto the hunt. I'm going to start our geocaching experience equipped with my Samsung Galaxy Tab. Additionally, I installed a geocaching.com client called c:geo that hopefully assists me soon. Combined with a map app like Google Maps and a nice Compass app you should be fully equipped and ready to go. I guess, that even a car navigation system is perfect for that task. Later on, with more experience and demand for technology (or precision) it might be interesting to opt-in for a pure GPS device, like a Garmin or any other brand on the market. {loadposition content_adsense} What is a geocache and what does it contain? In its simplest form, a cache always contains a logbook or logsheet for you to log your find. Larger caches may contain a logbook and any number of items. These items turn the adventure into a true treasure hunt. You never know what the cache owner or visitors to the cache may have left for you to enjoy. Remember, if you take something, leave something of equal or greater value in return. It is recommended that items in a cache be individually packaged in a clear, zipped plastic bag to protect them from the elements. Finding your first geocache Well, first you have to have interest to pick up the challenge. Then you have to check out the Geocache directory on geocaching.com. They have recommendations for beginner's caches but you are free to choose any. Actually, we have a Mystery Cache very close to our base, and I guess that we are going for that one on our first trip. Anyway, there is a very informative guide on the website which should answer all your questions about starting your new outdoor adventure. For sure, it's going to be rewarding. Team up with friends and family Especially as a beginner there might be misunderstandings in handling the GPS coordinates, the compass, or the map, and even finding the container at the documented position isn't easy in the first place. Luckily, there are logbook reports online from other hunters, and most of the time there are even 'spoiler' images available. But also bear in mind, that a geocache might have been removed or is lost due to unconscious people or whatever other reasons. Don't be disappointed in case that you can't find anything... There be nothing anymore. A general recommendation in this case would be to replace the missing container with a new one, and give feedback to the original owner about the state of that particular location. After all, it's about fun and active participation in a world-wide community. Geocaches in Mauritius? Yes, there are currently about 45 geocaches spread all over the island, and even a single in Rodriguez - that's gonna be a tough one. Hopefully, we will get increasing numbers as Geocaching.com allows, no better, even encourages you to hide new containers at your locations of choice. I think this is going to be real fun for us during the upcoming weeks and months. Especially, when we are travelling to other countries and transfer so-called trackable items between geocaches. On my first impression, Geocaching.com seems to be very mature, open and community-oriented. There are literally hundreds of thousands geocache 'hunters' all over the world. And usually finding a container remote from your home is very rewarding. I'll keep you updated in these matters during the next months to come...

• Apache 2.2, worker mpm, mod_fcgid and PHP: Can't apply process slot

  We're having an issue on an apache server where every 15 to 20 minutes it stops serving PHP requests entirely. On occasions it will return a 503 error, other times it will recover enough to serve the page but only after a delay of a minute or more. Static content is still served during that time. I rebuilt mod_fcgid from source as the packaged version was quite old. It's using current stable version (2.3.6) of mod_fcgid. • netlogon errors

  I have two instances of mssql 2005 and am using CA XOSoft replication. The master is a failover cluster and the replica is a standalone server. They are all running Server 2003 sp2 x64. Same patch levels on all servers. This setup has worked great for several months until we recently restricted the RPC ports on both nodes of the master(5000 - 6000 using rpccfg.exe). We have to implement egress filtering, thus the limiting of the ports. We began receiving login errors for sql windows authentication and NETLOGON Event ID: 5719: This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain due to the following: Not enough storage is available to process this command. This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator. We also see group policies failing to update and cluster file shares go offline at the same time. The RPC ports were set back to default when we started seeing these problems and the servers rebooted, but the problems persist. The domain controllers are not showing any errors. Running dcdiag and netdiag shows everything is fine. We have noticed that the XOSoft service ws_rep.exe is using a lot of handles(8 - 9k), about the same number that sqlserver is using. As soon as xosoft replication is stopped the login errors cease and everything functions correctly. I have opened a ticket with CA for XOSoft, but I'm not sure that the problem is actually xosoft, but that it is the one bringing the problem to light. I'm looking for tips on debugging RPC problems. Specifically on limiting the ports and then reverting the changes.

• How to remove request blocking on apache reverse proxy after failure of backend before asking backen

  I am working on an apache2 reverse proxy vhost. When the server behind apache is down, the first request to apache shows the error page of course. But at subsequent requests it seems apache delays for some time before asking the backend server again. During all this time (which is short but in development I don't want a delay at all) only the apache error page is shown to the browser, although the backend server is already up. Where is this setting in apache, what is this behaviour, and how can I set the delay time to zero? Edit: I am not trying to change the timeout for a single request. I want to change the blocking time. It is my experience that apache blocks further requests for a certain time before asking a backend server again that has failed once. Edit2: This is what apache delivers: Service Temporarily Unavailable The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later. Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.4-2ubuntu5.7 with Suhosin-Patch proxy_html/3.0.0 Server at localhost Port 80 After hitting Ctrl-R in firefox for 60 seconds the page finally appears.

• Recover that Photo, Picture or File You Deleted Accidentally

  Have you ever accidentally deleted a photo on your camera, computer, USB drive, or anywhere else? What you might not know is that you can usually restore those pictures—even from your camera’s memory stick. Windows tries to prevent you from making a big mistake by providing the Recycle Bin, where deleted files hang around for a while—but unfortunately it doesn’t work for external USB drives, USB flash drives, memory sticks, or mapped drives. The great news is that this technique also works if you accidentally deleted the photo… from the camera itself. That’s what happened to me, and prompted writing this article. Restore that File or Photo using Recuva The first piece of software that you’ll want to try is called Recuva, and it’s extremely easy to use—just make sure when you are installing it, that you don’t accidentally install that stupid Yahoo! toolbar that nobody wants. Now that you’ve installed the software, and avoided an awful toolbar installation, launch the Recuva wizard and let’s start through the process of recovering those pictures you shouldn’t have deleted. The first step on the wizard page will let you tell Recuva to only search for a specific type of file, which can save a lot of time while searching, and make it easier to find what you are looking for. Next you’ll need to specify where the file was, which will obviously be up to wherever you deleted it from. Since I deleted mine from my camera’s SD card, that’s where I’m looking for it. The next page will ask you whether you want to do a Deep Scan. My recommendation is to not select this for the first scan, because usually the quick scan can find it. You can always go back and run a deep scan a second time. And now, you’ll see all of the pictures deleted from your drive, memory stick, SD card, or wherever you searched. Looks like what happened in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas after all… If there are a really large number of results, and you know exactly when the file was created or modified, you can switch to the advanced view, where you can sort by the last modified time. This can help speed up the process quite a bit, so you don’t have to look through quite as many files. At this point, you can right-click on any filename, and choose to Recover it, and then save the files elsewhere on your drive. Awesome! Restore that File or Photo using DiskDigger If you don’t have any luck with Recuva, you can always try out DiskDigger, another excellent piece of software. I’ve tested both of these applications very thoroughly, and found that neither of them will always find the same files, so it’s best to have both of them in your toolkit. Note that DiskDigger doesn’t require installation, making it a really great tool to throw on your PC repair Flash drive. Start off by choosing the drive you want to recover from…   Now you can choose whether to do a deep scan, or a really deep scan. Just like with Recuva, you’ll probably want to select the first one first. I’ve also had much better luck with the regular scan, rather than the “dig deeper” one. If you do choose the “dig deeper” one, you’ll be able to select exactly which types of files you are looking for, though again, you should use the regular scan first. Once you’ve come up with the results, you can click on the items on the left-hand side, and see a preview on the right.  You can select one or more files, and choose to restore them. And keep in mind, DiskDigger is a totally free donationware software from a single, helpful guy… so if his software helps you recover a photo you never thought you’d see again, you might want to think about throwing him a dollar or two. • Task Scheduler Crashing MMC

  I've been getting errors whenever I try to run the task scheduler for Windows 2008 R2. Each time that I've tried running it, the task scheduler will crash and report the following: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: CLR20r3 Problem Signature 01: mmc.exe Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385 Problem Signature 03: 4a5bc808 Problem Signature 04: System.Windows.Forms Problem Signature 05: 2.0.0.0 Problem Signature 06: 50c29e85 Problem Signature 07: 151f Problem Signature 08: 18 Problem Signature 09: Exception OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.16.7 Locale ID: 1033 I've been looking online but so far I keep finding mixed results on what could be the fix for this and was wondering if anyone here has ever ran into this issue before. I read that this issue could be because of Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2449742) and that by uninstalling it I would be able to fix this issue, however I was not able to locate this anywhere in the server. Here's the link if interested Patch wise, everything is up to date. Also, I tried running hotfix KB2688730 to see if that would work after doing some research online, however the hotfix is not applicable to the computer. If anyone could provide some information on how to fix this and get the task scheduler running again it would be extremely helpful!

I’ve been contacted various times by friends working in organization telling me that ALM processes in their company were benchmarked when dinosaurs walked the earth. By default the desired state of ALM maturity is set to Standard, it is possible to set a desired state by area, you should strive for Advanced or Dynamic, it always helps by explaining the classification and advantages. • Intermittent PHP error: Undefined function <core function>

  In the last week I've been coming across an incredibly annoying error on one of Slicehost slices. It appears that every now and then PHP will fail with a fatal error, saying a certain function is undefined. The function changes, but is always a core PHP function e.g. defined(), version_compare(), etc. This problem has occurred while using several different PHP applications - PHPMyAdmin, my own custom built apps, etc, leading me to believe that the problem is not specific to the running code. Here are some details: - Debian Lenny - Apache 2.2.9 - PHP 5.2.6-1+lenny4 with Suhosin-Patch (running eAccelerator 0.9.6) Apache and PHP are installed from Debian packages. Error logs show nothing out of the ordinary. I thought memory might be an issue, but free -m reports upwards of 100MB free almost all the time. Another thing I'm trying to investigate is if the problem might be related to eAccelerator, but testing this theory out is incredibly hard because the issue doesn't appear very often and I've been using eAccelerator for months on this install without any problems up until now. Has anyone ever come across anything like this? Why would PHP report undefined core functions?

• Virtual Machines and Automatic Software Updates

  It's obvious that one's main computer should always be have all the latest security patches and most people don't blink an eye when Microsoft Update installs non-security updates. In the land of virtual machines, I've run into 2 problems with automatic updates: The virtual machines are only run when needed. Only Windows virtual machines seem to patch themselves. To elaborate on #1, I generally make a virtual machine with a purpose in mind. For example, when I needed an old copy of Internet Explorer to reproduce a bug in RSS Bandit, I had a Virtual PC named RSS Bandit. The machine only stayed running for a few minutes at a time. Consequently, there is no downtime for the machine to download updates at 3 AM. To elaborate on #2, I've noticed that if I haven't run a Windows virtual machine in a while, then the moment I log in, the computer frantically downloads updates and within seconds, if I click the Start button, there is a little orange shield next to the "Shutdown" button. However, I ran a freshly created Ubuntu VM for several hours today with hundreds of updates pending and it seemed to never download any of them or install any of them. Is there any reason to be concerned about running VMs with dozens of security holes? If I should be concerned, then is there any way to get Ubuntu to download and install updates rather than just advertising a long list of updates to download next century? I've already tried telling Ubuntu to automatically download and install updates.

• Unable to activate Windows XP

  The latest round of Patch Tuesday updates left my Windows XP computer unbootable. ("Fatal System Error: The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly.") After much messing around with the recovery console, an XP CD's repair mode, and manually copying registry files around, I have a system that can boot again. However, I overwrote my OEM XP installation's activation information while trying to run a retail XP CD's setup, so it needs reactivation. Here's my problem: I cannot activate it at all. I log in, Windows tells me I have to activate to continue, I click Yes, and absolutely nothing happens: no windows, no response to keyboard or mouse, no response to Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing. Safe mode works, but I can't activate in safe mode (EDIT: not even safe mode with networking). I read a trick online of pressing [Windows Key]+U to bring up the Microsoft Narrator, and that works, but clicking its Microsoft Web Site link does nothing. My last attempt to resolve this was to reinstall Windows off of the OEM CD. Now I have two parallel Windows installations, both on the same hard drive, one with all of my stuff and no way to activate it, one fully activated with no usable programs. Any ideas? Any way to activate in safe mode? Any way to copy activation information from my activated installation to my unactivated installation (since they're both on the same hard drive)?

• To update or to not update?

  Since starting working where I am working now, I've been in an endless struggle with my boss and coworkers in regard to updating systems. I of course totally agree that any update (be it firmware, O.S. or application) should not be applied carelessly as soon as it comes out, but I also firmly believe that there should be at least some reason if the vendor released it; and the most common reason is usually fixing some bug... which maybe you're not experiencing now, but you could be experiencing soon if you don't keep up with . This is especially true for security fixes; as an examle, had anyone simply applied a patch that had already been available for months, the infamous SQL Slammer worm would have been harmless. I'm all for testing and evaluating updates before deployng them; but I strongly disagree with the "if it's not broken then don't touch it" approach to systems management, and it genuinely hurts me when I find production Windows 2003 SP1 or ESX 3.5 Update 2 systems, and the only answer I can get is "it's working, we don't want to break it". What do you think about this? What is your policy? And what is your company policy, if it doesn't match your own?

• I can't connect new Windows 7 PC to Mac iBook with OS 10.3.9

  Help ! I have an old iBook wired to a router and a new PC linking wirelessly to same router. On the Mac I have 'seen' the PC but not been able to connect to it. On the PC, the Network and Sharing Centre lists 'IBOOK'. When I click on this, 'Windows Security' asks me to 'Enter Network Password', asking for User name and password. I have tried: 1) The user name and password of my admin account on the iBook. This returns a 'logon failure' message but lists the user name as [NAME_OF_PC\User Name], suggesting it was looking for the user name of the PC, not the Mac. 2) The user name and password of my account on the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. 3) The user name of my account on the PC and the 'homegroup password' given to me by Windows when setting up the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. Today I've tried connecting the two machines via a patch cable - still no joy. Can anyone help? It is 20 years since I wrestled with any OS other than Mac, and 10 years since I've done mich wrangling with the Macs, so please assume no knowledge! Thanks in advance,

• Weird connectivity issue wtih USB Wifi stick.

  Hi, all! I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to throw this question out there, but I'll give it a shot. I'm setting up two PCs, and I've been having massive troubles getting a USB wireless dongle working. I have two Sony VAIOs (Windows XP, SP2) that I found second-hand, and since they will be in a location too far to connect by Ethernet (no, can't do patch panels here :p), I need to connect them by wireless. Easiest and cheapest way to do that at the moment is by using two USB wireless sticks that I've had for a while, but never used. One of the computers is using a SMC-manufactured card, whereas the other is using a Belkin F5D7050. The box with the SMC card can see and authenticate with my router just fine, and has no problem obtaining a DHCP lease. The box with the Belkin, on the other hand, isn't so lucky. While it can see my router and associate with it, it will not obtain a DHCP-issued address. Worse, when I assign a static IP address to the NIC, it can ping the entire network and access the internet (meaning it can authenticate with the router), but no computer can ping to it UNLESS that computer pinged the computer that's pinging it first. Confused? Well, so am I. Has anyone had this issue before? Is this just a sign of a bad card? (For the moment, I have it connected by Ethernet, as I haven't moved it yet. However, this will be a problem when I set it up in its new home later.) Thanks! -Carlos Nunez

  I run an Ubuntu test server, and my deployment system is also Ubuntu. I've recently been trying to get ASP.NET to work on my test server so that we can take it live. I managed to get it installed, and configured properly, and my application is installed and running, but I can't get anything to work. Yes, this time I'm writing some lines on my (and my family's) activities during our long weekend stay on Rodrigues. So, please bear with me, it's eventually a bit more personal... Obviously, after their aunty from Germany was around during May, they were really eager to travel again. So, we decided that it might be a great opportunity to book some vacations during their school holidays. And just in time the local hotels and hotel groups started to advertise their special promotions for citizens and residents. After collecting multiple brochures over several days, we got attracted by various hotel packages on Rodrigues - most interestingly the expenses for the stay and flight ticket were less compared to other resorts here on the main island. As we have been to Rodrigues already back in 2008, we followed up on this idea and got in touch with a couple travel agencies. Well, I have to report that you should be really careful about the promotions from some of them. We had a very negative experience with Shamal Travel Agency in Quatre Bornes regarding their adverts and the actual price levels and age definition for children. Please, stay away from them if you are interested in transparent cost and services. Anyway, after some arrangements with two other close families we managed to confirm our stay at the Cotton Bay Hotel in Rodrigues. Given the fact that we already stayed there, and the hotel has been renovated recently, and it is under new management all looked very promising and relaxed for our vacation. Counting the days... As we already booked in July our children were counting down the days. And it got more interesting as soon as they were on school holidays finally. Well, the day arrived and waking them up at 2:30 hrs wasn't a problem after all. Quite the opposite it was fascinating for us parents to watch them waiting for the transport and later on during the airport transfer. Despite the early hours both didn't fall asleep and it was all so exciting. We are taking the plane! Well organised by the Cotton Bay Hotel Honestly, it was a breeze and a smooth ride during our stay at the hotel. From the airport transfer, the cleanliness of our bungalow, the organisation of our day trips, and the SPA - all very well and enjoyable. The children had great fun, and although it was a bit too windy to plunge into the pool they had a lot of fun with other activities on the beach and at the Kid's Club. Oh, and we had our private petting zoo with cows, sheep and goats just close to the terrace. Some of us went to check out the SPA facilities and I have to admit that the services regarding Hammam and Sauna are better than at some other hotels in Mauritius. I don't know after how many months or years I was once again enjoying a very hot sauna. Little draw-back but nothing to worry about... There is no cold water or at least ice cubes to cool down the body, but hey there was a nice breeze coming over the hills. Some day trips to mention Based on a friend's recommendation we walked to a "restaurant" called Chez Solange & Robert. Hahaha, restaurant is widely stretched in this case, as we enjoyed a great BBQ with fresh lobster, whole fish, and pieces of chicken breast in an open cottage. Just some wooden structure covered with dried palm leaves on the roof - island feeling pure! The other day we went to the Giant Tortoise & Cave Reserve Francois Leguat to observe the giant Aldabra turtles and to visit the Grande Caverne. The biggest limestone cave on the island. Compared to our last visit this was a novelty after checking out the Caverne Partate. The formations of stalactites and stalagmites are very impressive and imaginative. Our guide had lots of funny terms and despite the low light conditions the kids had a great time wandering around on the narrow wooden paths and stairs. And last but not least, we decided to check out the Tyrodrig zip lines... Everyone was allowed to join the trip through the air, and our little ones stayed close to our field guides. But finally went on their own on the very last traversal. Puuuh, it was astounishing to glide over the valley, and for sure something to repeat next time. Impressions of our vacation on Rodrigues 2014   Next stay has been discussed already Oh yes, Rodrigues baby! We are going to come again! Tentative dates have been discussed already and now it's up to us to earn enough our next holiday on that wonderful remote piece of paradise. Eventually, a little bit longer than this time. • Is it possible to re-cab an Administrative Install Point?

  We have Acrobat 8 Pro at work, and our media was painfully out of date. Rather than install all of the machines at 8.0.0 and then do the 6 or 7 consecutive reboots adobe expects you to be ok with I decided I'd integrate the .msp files into the installer. • Disabling Skype automatic update

  How to stop skype from searching or at least downloading update without consent? I want that annoying "Update skype now" dialog box that keeps popping up before I log in to Skype and after I log in to Skype from appearing at all. Few months ago this used to work: 1) C:\Users\”YourName”\AppData\Local\Temp folder. 2) Find the file called SkypeSetup.exe, and delete it. 3) Create a text file in the folder, rename it to SkypeSetup.exe 4) Right click on the new file you just created and ask for properties. 5) Next left click the security tab then left click the advanced button. 6) Now left click “Change Permissions” and then “Add”. Enter “Everyone” (without the quotes) where it sez’, “Enter the object name to select (examples):” and click “OK”. 7) Now check the “Deny” box for “Full control” and click “OK”. obtained from HERE, but now it seems this has stopped working. The worst part is Skype seems to download ~30MB of executable setup file without my knowledge before bugging me with the dialog box to update it, and there seems to be no direct way to disable this download. And disabling the skype updater service does not seem to work either. Is there any kind of patch or registry hack I can use to stop skype from auto updating? Or should I start looking for an alternative to Skype altogether?

• Munin with postgresql 9.2

  I am trying to set up Munin to collect stats on a server with postgresql 9.1 and 9.2 (the server is currently running 9.1, have tested on a fresh VM with 9.2 to rule out some weird problem on the running server. I had to patch some of the plugins for 9.2 due to renamed columns (e.g. procpid to pid), but that's no problem). Munin is installed from the EPEL repos, postgres from the official one. Both up to date. When I run the plugin individually via munin-run (e.g. munin-run postgres_size_ALL ), it works completely fine. Looking at /var/log/munin/munin-node.log, this is the output: Error output from postgres_size_ALL: DBI connect('dbname=template1','',...)failed: could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"? at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/Munin/Plugin/Pgsql.pm line 377 Service 'postgres_size_ALL exited with status 1/0. I am now out of ideas... the socket definitely exists, and pg_hba.conf is set to allow all users/databases from localhost with trust.

Being an Ubuntu user I hardly use Windows, but occasionally I do. Like to run Skyrim and other games incompatible with Linux and WINE. The new Sims 3 Seasons patch is also now not supported. When playing these two games and other ones, theoretically. I have also heard others saying that while watching HD movies and video series it also happens. While watching the bluescreen as it happens, I see it is the 'atikmpag.sys' error. I have not installed much and nothing significant. I think I have downloaded Skyrim, Firefox and The Sims 3. I haven't done much more... since Ubuntu is definitely the best in comparison! (No hate, just a joke :P). I can reproduce it easily (just by running a game for less than a minute). It is always there each time, but it's never at a specific time or anything. So far I have found that it may be caused by lack of power to the graphics card, or it may be damaged or fried. Since I've had the computer for a mere 4 months (and have had other problems with it also). I have contacted Dell but they are useless beyond belief. Anyone with any information, solutions or details are encouraged to share your knowledge, as it would be immensely appreciated.

• Has anyone used tools like (Chef, Salt, Puppet, CfEngine) to configure a 2008 Win Server with Sql?

  I have been looking into tools to automate the creation of servers. For two different reasons: Production Development machines I love the idea of the immutable server. I have seen the tools demoed and used successfully on *nix boxes running Rails or Lamp etc. Has anyone found a good way to do this in the Microsoft stack? I would like to get in on the fun and create scripts that will install Windows, patch it according to specification, deploy Sql Server create scripts to build out a database and just for fun deploy SharePoint and configure it, and then deploy a SharePoint solution to it. I can get part of the way, install Windows manually, install Sql Server manually, use Powershell to do all the configuration and setup. Install SharePoint and configure part of it, then powershell for the rest of the configuration and deploying a solution. I would love to have the ability to run one script though, or at least one unified process. I can, and have mostly used VM template images and then instantiated them, but the creation of the template is usually a manual step.
