• Can't start mysql server in xubuntu

  Hey all i am using Xampp version 1.7.1 in xubuntu 10.10. I have installed it in /opt/lampp but problem is that whenever i try to start the server using sudo ./lampp start it shows: Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.7.1... XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)... XAMPP: Starting MySQL... Warning: World-writable config file '/opt/lampp/etc/my.cnf' is ignored Warning: World-writable config file '/opt/lampp/etc/my.cnf' is ignored XAMPP: Starting ProFTPD... XAMPP for Linux started. • How to disable all window borders from the VLC playback window

  Is there a way to make the VLC playback window completely borderless (no title bar, no other borders)? Ideally, I would like the playback window to be completely borderless and then a separate window that has the controls (play, pause, timeline control, etc). UPDATES: I cannot use full screen mode, I would like playback window to be sized the same as the video, which is usually about 300x300 px. Also, I need to be able to position the window anywhere on the desktop. I'm using the Windows version of VLC.

• How can I disable logging in Tomcat 7?

  I have a Tomcat 7 server running in a VM that has very little disk space (20G). Over the course of a few days Tomcat will fill the space with logging info (usually about 15G before it runs out). I've tried turning down the log level (from INFO to SEVERE) in the logging.properties file, I've also tried sending the log info to /dev/null. It doesn't seem to work as I still get a full log directory after no time at all. Can I put a file size limit on the log files? Is something overriding the properties I'm setting? Where can I find this information? My Google Fu just returns information about logging from within an application using JULI.

• How to Disable secondary drive from booting upon restart - Windows

  I had a Windows 2003 Hard Drive on my server and it went bad so I installed a new clean hard drive and installed Windows 2008 R2 on the new clean drive. I moved the old 2003 drive to be used only for general storage on the same computer. It usually boots into Windows 2008 upon a restart, but just sometimes it starts trying to boot the old 2003 drive and causes boot issues(NTDLR Bootloader, and other errors), even though the order of boot preference is set to boot 2008, and NOT 2003. I need to know how to remove any old code that keeps this old drive as a bootable drive. I still want to use it as a secondary drive just dont want to have any boot code on it. hopefully my situation is clear for everyone to get a good response. Thank you...

• supervisord failed to start nagiosapi after reboot, need to run reload manually

  I have supervisord to start nagiosapi everytime the server starts. The API created a status dump file called status.dat, which will get updated periodically. The following is the conf file that starts the api. [program:nagapi] directory = /home/nagapi user = api command = /bin/bash -c "source /home/nagapi/.virtualenvs/nagapi/bin/activate; /home/nagapi/nagios-api/nagios-api" stdout_logfile = /home/nagapi/supervisor_nagios-api_stdout.log stderr_logfile = /home/nagapi/supervisor_nagios-api_stderr.log Everytime i restart the server, supervisord cannot start the api. stderr.log claims that it cannot find the status.dat file located in /var/cache/nagios3. It seems like the files was not created yet when supervisor tried to run the api the first time. I'm saying this because if i do a supervisorctl reload, everything would reload just fine, and the api would run ok about 50 seconds after the reload command completes. should i change the command option of the conf file to check for

  I have a strange problem on Windows Vista (Automatic updates). Long time ago I had installed Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari and Opera and they all worked well. Once upon a time, after Windows restart, Firefox, Thunderbird and Safari won't start. [Opera (USB) works fine]. When I start the browser, program name is listed on the processes list, but it is not activated, doesn't show any window. I tried crating new profiles with -ProfileManager, restarting Windows, reinstalling the browsers. I scanned the system for suspected programs and it looks clean. There is 45GB of free HDD space. WTF?

• Disable mouse hotkeys in Chrome

  Does anyone know how I can get Chrome to stop using my mouse buttons as hotkeys for a Logitech MX518 gaming mouse? I have the mouse driver and software suite (SetPoint) installed. Unfortunately, SetPoint does not provide per-application settings, so that route is not an option. No matter what I do in SetPoint, Chrome captures my side mouse buttons and uses them as a forward/back hotkey. I want to turn this off because I use those buttons for my push-to-talk in Mumble/Ventrilo. Any idea how I can do this? edit: my set-point does not have a way to create per-application settings.

• Apache will not start after IP change

  I'm running CentOS 5.8 and I had to change my server's IP address. Afterwards, I'm unable start Apache. I am also running virtualmin. The error I'm receiving is: Failed to start service Starting httpd: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 184.106.146.125 for ServerName (99) Cannot assign requested address: make_sock: could not bind to address 50.56.33.100:8080 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs I edited my httpd.conf to point to the new IP address like such: #Listen 12.34.56.78:80 Listen 184.106.146.125:80 And looking at the error it still seems to be referring to the old ip address (50.*).

• Intel Rapid Start Driver Reinstallation doesn't work?

  I recently had to reformat my entire drive and reinstall Windows 7. Something that bothers me is that when I was downloading the Intel Rapid Start driver (I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y480, and it comes standard with the Rapid Start) and tried to install it, the installer claimed that my system did not meet the requirements in order to install, when it was previously installed by the OEM. My startup times have increased from 21 seconds to log-in screen to 50 seconds. Please help...   I understand that when windows caches user credentials, these can sometimes be used by malicious parties to access other machines once a machine containing cached credentials is compromised, a method known as "pass the hash"[1]. For this reason I would like to get control over what's cached to reduce the risk of cached credentials being used maliciously. It is possible to prevent all caching by zeroing HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CachedLogonsCount, but this is too indiscriminate: laptops users need to be able to login when away from the network. We are currently having a problem in which the page seem to be sent twice sometime. Upon checking, we found out that those who have this problem are coming from big organisation, so it was suggested that their server might cache the file for some reason.   Iam trying to install one version of mysql in a LINUX machine. The system contain already another version of mysql installation. I prefer manual installation. Copy the exctracted tarball into a location and create symbolic link to that. I wish to install my mysql version without affecting already installed mysql version in the system. I created mysqld as service. But It couldn't start. When Iam trying to start this mysqld process, it shows an error like: Starting MySQL............................................................ ......................................... ERROR! The server quit without updating PID file (/var/lib/mysql/Test.pid). Please help me, is any wrong with my installation??? • Windows: disable remote access of local drive, even by domain admin

  We have a network of Windows 7 PCs that are managed as part of a domain. What we want is for the domain admin to be unable to view the PC's local drive (C:) unless he is physically at the PC. In other words, no remote desktop and no ability to use UNC. In other words, the domain admin should not be allowed to put \\user_pc\c$ in Windows Explorer and see all the files on that computer, unless he is physically present at the PC itself. Edit: to clarify some of the questions/comments that have come up. Yes, I am an admin---but a complete Windows novice. And yes, for the sake of this and my similar questions, it is fair to assume that I am working for someone who is paranoid. I understand the arguments about this being a "social problem versus a technical problem", and "you should be able to trust your admins", etc. But this is the situation in which I find myself. I'm basically new to Windows system administration, but am tasked with creating an environment that is secure by the company owner's definition---and this definition is clearly very different from what most people expect. In short, I understand that this is an unusual request. But I'm hoping there is enough expertise in the ServerFault community to point me in the right direction.

  How do I get the websites that I visit to stop localizing the language probably according to my IP location? This is an website specific issue because, for example economist.com and superuser.com do not do it, but Google Checkout and craigslist.org are doing it. Is there a way to setup Ubuntu and Firefox so that English will always be used for all web pages displayed? Edit: Of course many webpages have a link to an English version, but sometimes they don't. For example I believe such links usually appear on the root resource but sometimes I see non-English languages on child resources where such links do not appear. Example: most Blogger.com blogs appear in English but when I go to the blogger's profile ("view my complete profile"), it appears in another language that matches my geographic location.

  My coworkers started yelling at me today because apparently I started screaming in their ears during a Google hangout. And sure enough, when I go to the Microphone settings dialog, I can see the level being auto-adjusted constantly; sometimes way too high. I don't think this has happened previously; at least nobody ever complained. Can I find out who is doing that auto-adjusting, and more importantly, can I turn it off? I couldn't find any related setting in the recording device settings.   I currently have a FreeBSD 8.2 media server set up on my LAN that I use to stream my music from. I also have an SSH login that I use to do file transfers to and from this server remotely. I would like to set up ALTQ (and have gotten this working) to limit my outgoing bandwidth from the server for SSH traffic. However, configuring ALTQ this way is also limiting my internal traffic (and thus interfering with my music streaming) since I am only using a single network interface. • How to disable auto-assume in Google Chrome

  I've noticed that whenever I sign in in Google Chrome version 21.0 it automatically assumes and it automatically knows what I want to search. I basically use the address bar to search(my default search engine is Google) I don't go type Google.com on the address bar and then search from there. So what happens is that when I type something for example "vernier" for vernier caliper I'm automatically redirected to my facebook account which has a user account name of vern.ancheta. It's really getting annoying, this happens for every search term that I used maybe even ones that I haven't used before in my entire search history in Google. It always assumes as if it knows what I'm really thinking. What's the solution for this? Is this a bug in Google Chrome or just one of its annoying features. Please enlighten me on this.

  I need to change the log retention for apache, currently is seems to be running on the default from logrotate.conf which is weekly. It creates 'access_log.1' 'access_log.2' and so on for each week. The problem is it deletes the last log file every week, 'access_log.5', I need the logs to keep going infinitely instead of the last log being deleted every week. It seems to be running on the default value from logrotate.conf - I don't want to change the default values held in that file, so I assume there is a way to change the retention using the /etc/logrotate.d/httpd file? the contents are as follows: /var/log/httpd/*log { missingok notifempty sharedscripts postrotate /sbin/service httpd reload > /dev/null 2>/dev/null || true endscript } what can I add/change to stop the last log being deleted every week?

What I want to do is have the calling script finish and exit while the screen session stays active. I've tried daemonising the screen -x lines and adding an & to the end of the screen -x lines neither of which work properly. Ideas?
