• Why can't I open programs after watching youtube videos for a while?

  I have recently built a new PC, and it worked fine for a while (1-2 months of no problems whatsoever). However in the recent weeks I noticed that after I watched some youtube videos and closed everything, I can no longer do anything except move the mouse and expand the Startup Menu. If I click on any of the programs on the Start Menu or type a program on the Run text box, it won't open anything. I can't open taskmgr, or windows explorer, or even shut down the PC. I don't have anything else running when I'm watching videos except ZoneAlarm and Avast. The only workaround I can do when this happens is a forced shutdown (holding the power button of my PC), and restart if I wanted to do anything more. But this happens a lot - about 4-5 times a week so I'm worried it would fry up my hardware if I keep on doing this. • Server Overload Due To Log File

  cPanel sent me the following email: IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email. This is cPanel stats runner on ***.***.com! While processing the log files for user ***, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 04:41:14 up 15 days, 22:36, 0 users, load average: 7.66, 7.84, 8.00 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit /var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run /usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes). How can I lower the load?

• How do I stop my IIS App Pool making a request to wpad.mydomain.com?

  As part of some performance troubleshooting, I've monitored the slow startup of a "cold" App Pool (one without an active worker process) in IIS. When using a built-in account, the App Pool starts in sub-second time. When using a custom local account the App Pool takes 30+ seconds to start processing requests. The service appears to be making requests to wpad.mydomain.com, an address it does not have access to, which causes it to wait 30 seconds for a response before eventually timing out. As a workaround, I've added the hostname to the server's hosts file, to direct the traffic to the local machine, which returns much faster (1-2 seconds). What do I need to do to stop IIS making this request when this identity is used for the App Pool?

• Windows 7 ISO not booting from DVD drive?

  I've downloaded Windows 7 x64 Pro Upgrade from the volume license center. I've also downloaded the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. I'll burn it using this tool and while it will show up in Explorer as if the burn worked correctly, when I try to boot to the DVD on startup, I get a "No operating system found" error (this is a newer Lenovo). My Ubuntu Live CD works fine, am I missing something? I read that there's problems if you try to burn a 64bit copy from a 32bit computer, but I'm currently running Win7x64, so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also tried burning with ImgBurn and Windows 7 built ISO burner, no success. Obviously there's a step I'm missing here, what gives?

• How can I disable the guest account on OSX Lion?

  I have 'disabled' the guest account on my macbook pro running Lion via System Preferences Users & Groups. However the guest account still seems to appear as an option to login at start up and when switching users. I have never used the guest account for anything, and I have tried a system restore but the guest user has returned as before. How can I get rid of it? Thanks. edit: I also just enabled and disabled the account again - but the guest option still appears at startup offering a safari only restart for a guest user.

• Clearing the terminal before displaying MOTD

  When I connect to my SSH server, it prompts me for the user name and password. After I have authenticated, it will display my MOTD, then show user prompt, like this: Using username "root". Authenticating with public key "everssh" this is my motd root@debian:~# I want to edit some file so that the screen is cleared before the MOTD prints (so basically calling the clear command would do). I heard that the MOTD is displayed by using cat /etc/motd in a startup file, however after searching around I can't find where it is called from. Does anyone know how I can find it?

• Error when starting Outlook 2007 on Windows 7

  Every time I start Outlook 2007 SP2 on my Windows 7 box Outlook will look like its loading fine, then I get this error message: cannot start microsoft office outlook. cannot open the outlook window and outlook will close. I was able to get outlook to start by using outlook.exe /resetnavpane in the Start-Search box, a nice tip which I got from this social.microsoft.com page. But it didn't fix the problem since outlook is still complaining when it starts after a reboot. What can I do to get outlook to startup normally?

• Boot.ini on Windows Server 2003 R2

  I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 with 48 GB of RAM; server has been running strong for quite some time. Recently our boot.ini was modified causing issues, most likely by our remote administrators. Now the server is only showing 14 GB of RAM. This has caused major performance issues for our end users. Our remote administrators have stated "we don't change the boot.ini settings(switches)". However, I know for a fact that all of the local administrators have not modified the switches (due to lack of permissions). The real question.. Is it possible to "audit" who has modified the boot.ini? If thats not possible, can the boot.ini be set via startup? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is an ongoing issue that I would love to resolve.

  I'm trying to figure out which processes are deleting files from a specific directory, so I want to set up and run auditd on my system. I've set up the following rule in audit.rules: -w S unlink -S truncate -S ftruncate -a exit,always -k cache_deletion -w /home/myfolder/cache Then I type this to start the audit daemon: auditctl -R /etc/audit/audit.rules -e 1 But I get this error message: Error - nested rule files not supported Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here, and how I can resolve this? Also, what do I have to do to get the daemon running at startup?

• Disable RDC Welcome Screen in Windows 2008 R2

  Is there a way to disable or bypass the "Welcome" screen I see when I'm using RDC to log in to a machine using saved credentials? I have startup task which launches an RDP session automatically to localhost when the machine boots. This works, except that the remote desktop window stops and waits for an "OK" on the Welcome screen: MACHINENAME-A.B.C.D(Server ID:Console 0) Welcome [OK] This screen is preventing me from automating this login. • Ctrl-Alt-F1 never gives prompt

  When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 in my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 (Santiago) I get a black screen with a blinking cursor, but I never get a login prompt. I can get back to my desktop with Ctrl+Alt+F7, and things work as normal. However, when I run sudo init 3 I get the same thing, but this time I am stuck at the screen and can't get back without a reboot. I'm not even sure where to start looking for the cause of this problem. Are the startup scripts that might be causing the problem or other system configurations that could lead to this? If this is not an known issue, what steps should I take to debug?

• Setting 'bookmarks' for command prompt on Windows XP

  I know I can change the command prompt to startup on C:\ rather than F:\Documents And Settings or wherever. But I was wondering if it's possible to set bookmarks or some other command that allows me to switch to locations. For example, my Python projects have a long (about 7 subdirectories) address (think that's the word), and as such it takes a while to cd to them. What I would like to do is something like gotodirectory PythonProjects , and have it cd to where I have specified this, be it C:\WINDOWS or F:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\some game\some game data\some more game data.

• Windows xp keeps rebooting itself every morning at 8am?

  Hi, I've got windows xp sp3. It seems to restart itself every morning at 8am (judging by the windows logs, I can see all apps log a startup at 8am every day). Whenever I get to the machine in the morning (around 9 am) I see it's rebooted. I've checked that automatic updates are off, and that the power management settings are set to "always on". I'm not sure what else could be causing the machine to reboot, not sure where to start looking. Any ideas? • Kubuntu guest on Windows 8.1 Hyper-V won't shut down completely

  I've got a Windows 8.1 Professional laptop with Hyper-V installed, and a Kubuntu 14.04 Desktop VM. When I shutdown the Kubuntu VM, most of the time it gets to the logo screen, and just sits there. It's not frozen, because I can see the glow around the logo brighten and fade. I have installed the four Hyper-V modules, and lsmod shows them all running fine before the shutdown. Also, once it's stuck on the logo screen, if I send a CTL-ALT-DEL to the VM, it restarts immediately. Does anyone have any idea where I'd begin troubleshooting this? UPDATE: I've disabled the startup and shutdown screens, and now can see this output when it's stopped. Hopefully this sheds more light on the problem.

• Adding custom script on ESXi 5.0

  I have an ESXi server that I would like to have run a custom script on every boot that contains esxcli and other commands. I have tried adding the script into init.d and creating an rc.local.d folder with a script, but the etc folder gets rebuilt on startup. I've also tried modifying state.tgz and local.tgz in the /bootbank folder in order to force these files to appear, but that does not seem to work either. Is there any way I can run custom commands on boot? Note: I've tried the advice here ESXi boot process / state storage to no avail. Seems the system was changed between 4.1 and 5.0

• random hard disk errors

  For the past 2 years or so (4 year old custom build) I've been getting random moments where everything stops responding (or takes a very long time to respond) followed by I/O and hdd not detected errors on restart. To fix it, all I usually need to do is unplug my SATA cables from the hdd and mobo and plug them back in again and the problem disappears, at least for a little while (it ranges anywhere from a day to a few months time). Sometimes even a startup repair does the job. I've done multiple reformats and have also ran chkdsk more times than I can remember and both do not seem to help in the long run. Both the drives seem to be exhibiting the same problem. Have both my hdds been "dying" for the past couple of years, even though they are fully functional besides these occasional hiccups? Does the issue lie elsewhere? All feedback is appreciated. System specs: Biostar Tpower i45 mobo 2x WD Caviar 640GB hdds Zalman 750w psu Radeon 5870 gpu 2x2gb Gskill DDR2 ram Win7 64

• Windows 8 won't load as it has to

  I have successfully installed Windows 8 about eight months ago, and all went well. Only the last change I made ??is to set Startmenu8, to get a more normal for the Windows look. Yesterday, my computer screen went dark blue and the mouse does not seem to work. I changed the battery and reboot. But all I get is my desktop, taskbar, and not ikony.Programmy not appear at the bottom, but do not open the maximum so I can not use them. I have a Dell desktop and run the diagnostics on the F12 at startup. All right in line with this. I want to return to the previous item, but can not get in Windows, to do it. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Our entire company is cloud based, and I am looking for a good product to manage our remote systems. Currently we do not have on-site AD servers, we are using the Windows Azure AD services, so cannot rely on group policies at this stage. I would like to be able to achieve the following: (they are all laptops) Remote Desktop Support Patch management Lock down software on machines (restrict them) Monitor and manage systems Other benefits would be good, but if I can achieve the ones listed above, it will go a long way. We have a combination of Windows 7 pro & Windows 8 & 8.1 machines. I am currently using Windows Intune, but it is really limited. Really just a glorified patch enforcer. • Provide credentials to process in a safe manner

  On system startup I need to launch a process which requires credentials for other services (database etc.) to interact. I obviously don't want to store those on disk for security reasons. I'm trying to think of a way to provide those credentials to the process on launch - and on launch only. After that they should be only available to the process. Is this possible somehow? The bottom line is to make it as hard as possible for an intruder to get to those credentials.

  I want to run fsck on a disk image before I use it to restore (replace) a corrupted volume. Using Terminal, what would be the proper command, syntax, and options for this operation? I've just recently become acquainted with Terminal and line commands, so syntax and specific options aren't part of my computing vocabulary. I'm using Terminal 2.1.2, bash, OS 10.6.8. Ultimately, I'm trying to restore an image to a secondary startup volume (external drive). The image is mounted on my desktop and I want to check it for errors before I use it. Disk Utility runs "repair disk" successfully but the integrity of the image is suspect.

• hp g7-1070us does not post to windows

  Ok basically my laptop screen is broken and only a small portion of the screen is viewable. When I boot my laptop it gets to a screen where it shows startup/hp.com. That's all I can see because of the screens state. I can enter bios bit again cannot see much. My laptop is an hp g7-1070us and I was thinking of hooking it up to a monitor then going into the bios but that's not possible unless the computer posts to windows. So I don't care about the data all I want is to boot to windows. I'm wondering if I insert a copy of windows,7 and do,a,clean install will,it work. I don't have the cd yet but working on it. I need help please

• Portable VirtualBox with Ubuntu on two machines

  I have VirtualBox Portable installed from vbox.me. I moved it on a USB drive and added a virtual Ubuntu. It works fine on the computer I created it, but moving the usb drive to a different the Ubuntu does not start any more. I already changed location descriptions in <machine>.vbox and the VirtualBox.xml. When pressing Shift while starting the GRUB loader comes up, so I tried the recovery mode. Same here – startup freezes and nothing happens. Any hints for me? • dell E6500 laptop will not hibernate/standby

  I am using a Dell E6500 laptop with windows XP on it, it was originally tagged/installed with Windows Vista. My issue is, when I close the lid, it will not either Hibernate or Standby. If I close the lid with either of these options, I then have to startup from scratch, and anything I had open is not open. I just want to close the lid, have it keep what I have running, not use power util I open the lid again and start it up (with the stuff still open I had open of course). Suggestions?
