• How to generate a random alpha-numeric string in Java

  I've been looking for a simple java algorithm to generate a pseudo-random alpha-numeric string. In my situation it would be used as a unique session/key identifier that would "likely" be unique over 500K+ generation (my needs don't really require anything much more sophisticated) . Ideally I would be able to specify a length depending on my uniqueness needs. For example, a generated string of length 12 might look something like "AEYGF7K0DM1X". Answers: I like @Apocalisp and @erickson's answers equally well. The only downside to @Apocalisp's answer is it requires an apache class. Thanks to both for the help!

• Checking server load with PHP and taking appropriate action

  Hi, I'm creating a project in which a server receives operations from clients to apply to a local server document. The server and client both share the same document and therefore each message the client sends contains an MD5 hash, which the server compares to after generating its own hash to ensure the server and client documents are synchronized. My question is, if the server is overloaded, could I somehow detect this in PHP, which would in turn let me decide whether I want to execute the hash generation function or not? Perhaps in the scenario defined, this is not a perfect use-case, but I'm interested in this approach in general.

• CIE XYZ colorspace: do I have RGBA or XYZA?

  I plan to write a painting program based on linear combinations of xy plane points (0,1), (1,0) and (0,0). Such system works identically to RGB, except that the primaries are not within the gamut but at the corners of a triangle that encloses the entire gamut. I have seen the three points being referred to as X, Y and Z (upper case) somewhere, but I cannot find the page anymore (I marked them to the picture myself). My pixel format stores the intensity of each of those three components the same way as RGB does, together with alpha value. This allows using pretty much any image manipulation operation designed for RGBA without modifying the code. What is my format called? Is it XYZA, RGBA or something else? Google doesn't seem to know of XYZA. RGBA will get confused with sRGB + alpha (which I also need to use in the same program). Notice that the primaries X, Y and Z and their intensities have little to do with the x, y and z coordinates (lower case) that are more commonly used.

• New instruction sets in CPU

  Every new generation of CPU introduces some sets of new instruction, ie.: MMX,3DNOW,SSE and so on. I've got few general questions about them: 1) If some program uses for example SSE instruction can it be run on CPU that doesn't support SSE? 2) If yes , does it mean that those instuction will be changed to some greater number of simpler instuctions? 3) If not, does it mean that the real perfomance impact of such new instructions will be after few years when most CPU will support such technology (so there won't be any incompatibilities)? 4) When I compile a C++ program with optimizations does it mean that it'll use some of this new instructions? (I know that it depends on many factors, especcialy on the code, but I want some general answer) Or are they reserved mostly for programs written in asm?

• Evaluation of jQuery function variable value during definition of that function

  I have a large number of rows in a table within which I wish to attach a unique colorpicker (jQuery plugin) to each cell in a particular column identified by unique ids. Given this, I want to automate the generation of instances of the colorpicker as follows: var myrows={"a","b","c",.....} var mycolours={"ffffff","fcdfcd","123123"...} for (var i=0;i<myrows.length;i++) { $("#"+myrows[i]+"colour").ColorPicker({flat: false, color: mycolours[i], onChange: function (hsb, hex, rgb) { $("#"+myrows[i]+"currentcolour").css('backgroundColor', '#' + hex); } }); Now this doesn't work because the evaluation of the $("#"+myrows[i]+"currentcolour") component occurs at the time the function is called, not when it is defined (which is want I need). Given that this plugin javascript appends its code to the level and not to the underlying DOM component that I am accessing above so can't derive what id this pertains to, how can I evaluate the variable during function declaration/definition?   I'm using testng to run selenium based tests in java. I have a bunch of repeated tests. Generally they do all the same except of test name and one parameter. I want to automate generation of it. I was thinking about using factory. Is there a way to generate tests with different name? What would be the best approach to this? • Most efficient approach for multilingual PHP website

  I am working on a large multilingual website and I am considering different approaches for making it multilingual. The possible alternatives I can think of are: The Gettext functions with generation of .po files One MySQL table with the translations and a unique string ID for each text PHP-files with arrays containing the different translations with unique string IDs As far as I have understood the Gettext functions should be most efficient, but my requirement is that it should be possible to change a text string in the original reference language (English) without the other translations of that string automatically reverting back to English just because a couple of words changed. Is this possible with Gettext? What is the least resource demanding solution? Is using the Gettext functions or PHP files with arrays more or less equally resource demanding? Any other suggestions for more efficient solutions?

As some needed plugins are generated using GMF and EMF, the build workflow must be something like this: SVN Check-out Invoke Generation Run Tests Build all Publish update-site Over the last couple of weeks, i played around with PDE Headless Build and Buckminster. Anyhow i still got problems with both and can't decide on which i should spent my effort. So what would you prefer? What experience you made? To control sequence generation I have added the following entry to the hibernate.reveng.xml: ... <primary-key> <generator class="sequence"> <param name="sequence">SEQ_FOO_ID</param> </generator> </primary-key> ... This results in the following annotation: @SequenceGenerator(name = "generator", sequenceName = "SEQ_FOO_ID") However I need to set the "allocationSize" like this: @SequenceGenerator(name = "generator", sequenceName = "SEQ_FOO_ID", allocationSize = 1) Is it possible to set this somehow in the hibernate.reveng.xml?

• Word 2010 for writing invoices, starting with XML

  Hello, we are doing quite some invoice generation, and so far it is based on some pretty awful word automation that is now in for a review with Word 2010. I would love to move to a XML based format for storing / presenting invoices, only going to a word document in the last stage. This means I can use easily othermeans to present an invoice internally from the XML. We use Word as "last stage" because Word is a lot better than anything else ever discovered for formatting - our invoices have quite some text sometimes, in the invoice item table, and word is smartest with handling page breaks in the "correct" way. Now, here my question: is there any proper way by now to do this with XML easily? I remember Word having (had) in 2007 some XML field mapping mechanism, but it did not handle tables in the XML. Was anything changed? What would be the proposed approach for generating an .docx document (starting with a .dotx templace) for an invoice, if the relevant data is available in XML form?

• Thread Local Memory for Scratch Memory.

  I am using Protocol Buffers and OpensSSL to generate, HMACs and then CBC encrypt the two fields to obfuscate the session cookies -- similar Kerberos tokens. Protocol Buffers' API communicates with std::strings and has a buffer caching mechanism; I exploit the caching mechanism, for successive calls in the the same thread, by placing it in thread local memory; additionally the OpenSSL HMAC and EVP CTX's are also placed in the same thread local memory structure ( see this question for some detail on why I use thread local memory and the massive amount of speedup it enables even with a single thread). The generation and deserialization, "my algorithms", of these cookie strings uses intermediary void *s and std::strings and since Protocol Buffers has an internal memory retention mechanism I want these characteristics for "my algorithms". So how do I implement a common scratch memory ? I don't know much about the rdbuf of the std::string object. I would presumeably need to grow it to the lowest common size ever encountered during the execution of "my algorithms". Thoughts ?

• How to test the XML sent to a web service in Ruby/Rails

  I'm looking for the best way to write unit test for code that POSTs to an external web service. The body of the POST request is an XML document which describes the actions and data for the web service to perform. Now, I've wrapped the webservice in its own class (similar to ActiveResource), and I can't see any way to test the exact XML being generated by the class without breaking encapsulation by exposing some of the internal XML generation as public methods on the class. This seems to be a code smell - from the point-of-view of the users of the class, they should not know, nor care, how the class actually implements the web service call, be it with XML, JSON or carrier pigeons. For an example of the class: class Resource def new #initialize the class end def save! Http.post("http://webservice.com", self.to_xml) end private def to_xml # returns an XML representation of self end end I want to be able to test the XML generated to ensure it conforms to what the specs for the web service are expecting. So can I best do this, without making to_xml a public method?

• Matab - Trace contour line between two different points

  Hi, I have a set of points represented as a 2 row by n column matrix. These points make up a connected boundary or edge. I require a function that traces this contour from a start point P1 and stop at an end point P2. It also needs to be able trace the contour in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. I was wondering if this can be achieved by using some of matlabs functions. I have tried to write my own function but this was riddled with bugs and I have also tried using bwtraceboundary and indexing however this has problematic results as the points within the matrix are not in the order that create the contour. Thank you in advance for any help. Btw, I have included a link to a plot of the set of points. It is half the outline of a hand. The function would ideally trace the contour from ether the red star to the green triangle. Returning the points in order of traversal.

• Tuning JVM (GC) for high responsive server application

  I am running an application server on Linux 64bit with 8 core CPUs and 6 GB memory. The server must be highly responsive. After some inspection I found that the application running on the server creates rather a huge amount of short-lived objects, and has only about 200~400 MB long-lived objects(as long as there is no memory leak) After reading http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/hotspot/gc/gc_tuning_6.html I use these JVM options -Xms2g -Xmx2g -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:NewRatio=1 -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC Result: the minor GC takes 0.01 ~ 0.02 sec, the major GC takes 1 ~ 3 sec the minor GC happens constantly. How can I further improve or tune the JVM? larger heap size? but will it take more time for GC? larger NewSize and MaxNewSize (for young generation)? other collector? parallel GC? is it a good idea to let major GC take place more often? and how?

• awk / sed script to remove text

  Hi, I am currently needed of way to programmatically remove some text from Makefiles that I am dealing with. Now the problem is that (for whatever reason) the makefiles are being generated with link commands of -l<full_path_to_library>/<library_name> when they should be generated with -l<library_name>. So what I need is a script to find all occurrences of -l/ and then remove up to and including the next /. Example of what I'm dealing with -l/home/user/path/to/boost/lib/boost_filesystem I need it to be -lboost_filesystem As could be imagined this is a stop gap measure until I fix the real problem (on the generation side) but in the meantime it would be a great help to me if this could work and I am not too good with my awk and sed. • How to automatically email customers registration keys?

  I've written a bit of software that I'd like to share with others (a Mac Dashboard widget, specifically), but I'd also like to be compensated a bit for the time I spent on it. I've devised my own simple registration key algorithm, which takes a customer's email address and creates a 12-character alphanumeric key. The software itself is finished, demo limitations, key validation & all. I just need to get the keys to customers. How do I simply alert a key generation script to automatically email a customer a key, upon notification that they paid my account? Can I use PayPal IPN & JavaScript? The simplest solution will do - this is a five dollar widget. :)

  For one specific client I have to use PHP. This and this question were 2 years old. I'd like to know is there any update of opinion for year 2010? My background on web development is mainly rails. I can code in PHP (for example, write a module for Drupal) but never used any PHP framework for any project. • iOS - playing a youtube video from a webview thumbnail

  Was about to finally submit an app when I realized that the youtube videos I'm playing play from the iPhone, but not the iPad. • How to load images and fragments dynamically in LiveCycle Designer forms?

  Hi there. I've created a couple of shared templates (.xdp) which will be shared among several clients. Obviously, each client has their own logo and I'd like to set the logo upon form generation. I've managed to change the logo dynamically although I'm not sure if my approach is good. In the xml datasource I've got this element: <ClientID>SomeNumber</ClientId> In the form itself I set the image href with this javascript code: SomeHiddenTextField::calculate HeaderLogo.value.image.href = $record.ClientID + "_logo.jpg"; I've got the logos stored on the server in the same folder as the shared templates. Is this an alright approach to load logos dynamically? I've been trying to achieve the same dynamic behaviour with each client's footer fragment, but I have been unable to figure out how to load these on demand. I could make each footer fragment in to an image but I'd like to avoid it if possible.

• Script Speed vs Memory Usage

  I am working on an image generation script in PHP and have gotten it working two ways. One way is slow but uses a limited amount of memory, the second is much faster, but uses 6x the memory . There is no leakage in either script (as far as I can tell). In a limited benchmark, here is how they performed: -------------------------------------------- METHOD | TOTAL TIME | PEAK MEMORY | IMAGES -------------------------------------------- One | 65.626 | 540,036 | 200 Two | 20.207 | 3,269,600 | 200 -------------------------------------------- And here is the average of the previous numbers (if you don't want to do your own math): -------------------------------------------- METHOD | TOTAL TIME | PEAK MEMORY | IMAGES -------------------------------------------- One | 0.328 | 540,036 | 1 Two | 0.101 | 3,269,600 | 1 -------------------------------------------- Which method should I use and why? I anticipate this being used by a high volume of users, with each user making 10-20 requests to this script during a normal visit. I am leaning toward the faster method because though it uses more memory, it is for a 1/3 of the time and would reduce the number of concurrent requests.

I don't have control over the JSON generation in this instance and would like the solution to work with the Silverlight subset of .NET. It would be great if the solution could perform the reverse for serialization as well.

• Verifying serialisation streams when used for messaging

  I want to add distributed messaging to some applications. One target would be embedded and the other applications would be running on Windows. I'm thinking of having a connection manager, to which all of the applications would connect and communicate. I only need some simple kind of RPC mechanism. I've looked at Google Protocol Buffers, but I don't really like the idea of code generation. I'd rather use serialisation and somehow verify the format of the serialised stream. I.e. Perhaps send metadata about what the stream would contain so that each endpoint can verify it is reading the correct version. Does anyone know of any examples of this? Perhaps the message format could be read from a file which all the applications read to verify the stream format?

• dojo 1.4: difference in tree html rendering

  Hi, I have written an application using dojo 1.3 in which i have used the dijit tree. I am loading the tree with json data specified in the store which is in turn used by the tree model. In the 1.3 version the tree elements pick up the id directly from the json data.However in 1.4 the tree elements have their own id which is something like dijit__treenode_4. The id's that I have specified in json are unique and im not able to understand why these are not being used anymore. Please help me understand how this functionality has changed and how I can override the automatic id generation.. Thanks in advance, Fell

• Problems persisting Core Data structures on iPhone/iPad

  I have an iPhone/iPad app using Core Data to keep my application data. Sometimes, even though I don't get any error messages, the data is not really saved so when the app starts anew, it's all gone. This problem seems to disappear after physically rebooting the device, but otherwise it's pretty random and hard to track. Has anyone seen a similar issue? Also, it seems to happen more often in the iPhone 1st generation, less so in the 3G/3GS, and seldom in the iPad. Very strange...
