  • Keep local MS SQL 2008 DB table and remote SQL Azure DB table in sync

    Hi there, I have a dedicated server which hosts a Windows Service which does a lot of very heavy load stuff and populates a number of SQL Server database tables. However, of all the database tables it populates and works with, I want only one to be synchronised with a remote SQL Azure DB table. This is because this table holds what I called Resolved data, which is the end result of the Windows Service's work. I would like to keep a SQL Azure database table in sync with this database table. As far as I understand, my options are: Move everything onto Azure (but that involves a massive development overhead and risk) Have another Windows Service on the dedicated server which essentially looks at changed records since the last update and then manually update the SQL Azure table

  • SQL Server 2008 GUID column is all 0's

    I'm hoping this is a simple goof I did on my end ... I have a table in my database set up like so: column name: widget_guid data type: uniqueidentifier allow nulls: false default value: newid() identity: false row guid: true When records are created (via LINQ to SQL) that the values in this field are formatted as a GUID but contain all 0's My assumption was that when a new record was created, that a guid would be autogenerated for that column, much like an auto-incrementing row id. Is this not true? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I am creating a widget that will be installed on several websites and blogs. The widget will analyse the remote webpage title and content, then it will return relevent articles/links on my website. The amount of traffic we expect will be very huge roughly 500K queries a day and up from there. I need the queries to be returned very quickly, so I need the candidate to be high performance, similar to google adsense. The remote title can be from 5 to 50 words and the description we will use no more then 3000 words. Which of these two do you think can handle the load.

  • VS 2008 unstable after "Stop Debugging"

    This was on Windows Server 2003 X86, VSTS 9.0.30729.1 SP I used "Attach to process" to debug the program, but recently when I "Stop Debugging" by "shift + f5", I was prompted with an error saying "VS has an internal error and will be unstable". After that all the debug related menu items were disabled e.g. "Start debugging" and "attach to process" etc., even when I forcibly closed the program the situation remained, leaving me the only option to restart the solution. The only reason I can think of causing this is that I forcibly kill the process a lot, in order to able to rebuild it quickly, other than that I didn't do anything abnormal to VS. another sympton: when I tried to close the VS normally, I was prompted with "source file [] does not belong to the project being debugged" for all the files I opened inside of IDE, but the file does belong to the project.     I've created a user control that contains a table layout control with various other standard controls like buttons and labels. Yet when I add the user control to one of my forms the control is blank. I've tried building the solution and a see the user-control flicker as if it's being updated, but it remains blank. Also if I actually run the program the usercontrol can not be see on the form. I've used usercontrols like this in the past. Is there something I'm missing?

  • Visual Studio 2008 awful performance

    Hi, I have ported a piece of C++ code, that works out of core, from Linux(Ubuntu) to Windows(Vista) and I realized that it works about 50times slower on VS2008! I removed all the out of core parts and now I just have a piece of code that has nothing to do with the hard disk. I set compiler parameters to O2 in Project Properties but still get about 10times slower than g++ in linux! Does anybody have an idea why it is this much slower under VS? I really appreciate any kind of hint! Thanks,

    I am planning to use py2exe to make an application developped with Python 2.6. It seems that my app need the VC redistribuables : http://www.py2exe.org/index.cgi/Tutorial#Step5 I've read this tutorial and the redistribuables license agreement and I am not sure if I can freely redistribute these files with my program. (I don't have VS2008 license) Can I bundle the redistribs into an installer and make the installation transparent for the user or do they have to download the files by their own from Microsoft website? Every record of checkin_flight contains a flightnumber and desknumber where passengers need to check in for this destination. The tables checkin_destination and checkin_company contain information about companies and destinations restricted to certain checkin desks. When adding a record to checkin_flight i need information from the flight table to get the destination and flightcompany with the inserted flightnumber. This information needs to be checked against the available checkin combinations for flights, destinations and companies. I'm using the trigger as stated above, but when i try to insert a wrong combination the trigger allows it. What am i missing here?

I have added a new parameter and bound it to a dataset to return a dropdownlist of resource names.   • Visual Studio 2008 Navigate Forewards/Backwards Buttons Don't Work As Expected

    I just installed VS2008 on my new Win7 box. I have Navigate Backwards and Navigate Forwards buttons on my tool bar. When I change between documents, I do NOT see a list drop down for each of the buttons like should be seen here after opening multiple documents and switching between their methods: How it should work. Instead, I just see the buttons without drop downs. I find that navigating forwards and backwards doesn't work as it should. I should be able to click in different lines of the code and press the nav back/forwards buttons to jump between lines. This is not the case. Any suggestions? Thanks in advanced. PS - I installed SP1 just to see and nothing changed.

    I’m having some problems understanding some particular file permissions behaviour. Here are the steps to reproduce: Log into the server using the default Administrator account Create a text file (testfile.txt) in C:\ProgramData containing some arbitrary text Create a new user account and make it a member of the Administrators group Log in using new account and open C:\ProgramData\testfile.txt Edit the text and try to save Upon clicking save I’m presented with the save as dialog, which indicates that i do not have the necessary permissions to edit the file. This seems odd considering that the new user account is a member of Administrators. When I view the permissions of the file I can see the there are three groups listed, System, Administrators and Users. SYSTEM and Administrators have full permissions, however, Users only has the Read & Execute and Read permissions checked. It would appear that when I open the testfile.txt from the new users account, it opens in the context of the Users group, despite being a member of Administrators, is this correct? It would certainly explain the behaviour. The reason that this is an issue for me is that if I deploy an application via 'Run as Administrator', will normal users be able to edit the text files I install to ProgramData. Is this behaviour confined to Windows server or is it the same in Vista and Win7.

    Above is how my report looks, the part in yellow in hidden, and is only shown when the user clicks the + icon on the [name]. the result is basically the percentage difference from the Past [X] - [TERM] i.e there is a dropdown with, [weeks, months, days, hours] and a textbox of qty. so choosing qty = 4 and term = weeks will delivery a result set spread over 4 weeks based on the parent result sets date range and name ID I wish to populate here the number of rows, dependant on the value set by the user and the data will be from a dataset. Is it possible to dynamically add more sub rows ( like on row data bound ) if my first row is ID 123 [name], is it possible to send this value [123] to a dataset in order that all subrows are only relevant to the name with ID of 123? this is my first bash at SSRS so please no half cut answers, that just lead to more questions about the answer given :-) if this makes sense.   • C# VS 2008 Build Configurations - using different classes for different builds

    I'm writing an application which has two classes that provide basically the same functionality but for different situations. I'd like to have three versions of the software - one where the user can change an ini file to configure the program to use one of the two classes, and then one version that only uses one of the two classes. Right now I have it working via an ini file, but I'd like to be able to build versions that don't include the code for the unneeded class at all. What is the best way to go about this? My current line of thinking is that since both classes derive from a common interface I'll just add a compile time conditional that looks at the active build configuration and decides whether to compile that class. What is the syntax to do that? Thanks in advance for your help and input!

  • Wierdness debugging Visual Studio C++ 2008

    I have a legacy C++ app, that in its most incarnation we've been building with makefiles and VS2003's command-line tool. I'm trying to get it to build using VS2008 and MsBuild. The build is working OK, but I'm getting errors where I'd never seen errors, before, and stepping through in VS2008's debugger only confuses me. The app links a number of static libraries, which fall into two categories: those that are part of the same application suite, and those that are shared between a number of application suites. Originally, I had a .csproj file for each static library, and two .sln files, one for the application suite (including the suite-specific libraries) and one for the non-suite-specific shared libraries. The shared libraries were included in the link, their projects were not included in the application suite .sln. The application instantiates an object from a class that is defined in one of the shared libraries. The class has a member object of a class that wraps a linked list. The constructor of the linked list class sets its "head" pointer to null. When I run the app, and try to add an element to the linked list, I get an error - the head pointer contains the value 0xCCCCCCCC. So I step through with the debugger. And see weirdness. When the current line in the debugger is in a source file belonging to the static library, the head pointer contains 0x00000000. When I step into the constructor, I can see the pointer being set to that value, and when I'm stepped into any other method of the class, I can see that the head pointer still contains 0x00000000. But when I step out into methods that are defined in the application suite .sln, it contains 0xCCCCCCCC. It's not like it's being overwritten. It changes back and forth depending upon which source file I am currently debugging. So I included the shared library's project in the application suite .sln, and now I see the head pointer containing 0xCCCCCCCC all the time. It looks like the constructor of the linked list class is not being called. So now, I'm entirely confused. Anyone have any ideas?
