• Best method for Flex to PHP communication?

  What is the best method for communication between Flex and PHP? In the past, we used AMFPHP with AS2, and it worked great for the most part (advantage of AMFPHP is that it also has a JSON mode that can let you seamlessly use the same remote PHP with either Javascript or Actionscript frontends). However, it seems like AMFPHP isn't realy maintained anymore. So what do people recommend to replace it? So far, what I've found is: Zend_AMF (looks too complex for us, we're not using the Zend framework otherwise) AMFPHP (there were some updated made to support Flex, and it seems fairly stable, but not sure on long-term support) XML (AS3 has nice XML handling routines, but it's more of a pain on the PHP side) WebORB (I have no experience with this) Roll-our-own using JSON or some other data-to-text serialization system (php's serialize(), XML, etc etc) Mostly I'm leaning towards AMFPHP, even because of the downsides, since that's what I'm used to. Any reason I should consider switching to something else?

Suppose that I already know the programming language well, but not the web-framework. The OS will be Linux. • Recompile a x86 code with LLVM to some faster one x86

  Hello Is it possible to run LLVM compiler with input of x86 32bit code? There is a huge algorithm which I have no source code and I want to make it run faster on the same hardware. Can I translate it from x86 back to x86 with optimizations. This Code runs a long time, so I want to do static recompilation of it. Also, I can do a runtime profile of it and give to LLVM hints, which branches are more probable. The original Code is written for x86, and uses no SSE/MMX/SSE2. After recompilation It has a chances to use x86_64 and/or SSE3. Also, The code will be regenerated in more optimal way to hardware decoder. Thanks.

  So I was writing a web app with web.py that uses plenty of client-side javascript, and my database is on couchdb so the queries are in javascript too, and eventually I just got to thinking, why not skip the python and go all javascript? Besides, some functions need to run once on the client and again on the server to make sure you're not spoofing, so why translate between javascript and python? So I'm looking for a simple lightweight javascript web framework. All I really need is the url routing, request and response stuff (standard wsgi?), and a way to hook into a big http server like nginx. What do you guys recommend?

• How to geocoding big number of addresses?

  I need to geocode, i.e. translate street address to latitude,longitude for ~8,000 street addresses. I am using both Yahoo and Google geocoding engines at http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/geocoder/, and found out that for a big number of addresses those engines (one of them or both) either could not perform geocoding (i.e.return latitude=0,longitude=0), or return wrong coordinates (incl. cases when Yahoo and Google give different results). What is the best way to handle this problem? Which engine is (usually) more accurate? I would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, ideas from people who had previous experience with this kind of task.

  Now that monotouch is being banned, I was wondering if there is a way to translate C# (or some other modern language for that matter) into objective-C? I won't mind using apple's api as long as I don't have to declare my variables in 3-4 stages (ivar-property-synthesize-dealloc). All I want is a less wordy language to concentrate on my intent and not on the compiler syntax. unfortunately apple in its arrogance thinks objective-c is a "modern" language and if you are looking for an alternative (monotouch) it's because you are incapable of coding. also if you don't find programming in itunes; sorry, xcode enjoyable, it is not because there are better alternatives, it's because you are stupid. anyway back to my original question: can it be done?

  Hi Rails'ers, I encountered some problem while trying to translate my model's names and attributes in a Rails 2.3.5 app. I have the following model: class BillingPlan < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :billing_option_id belongs_to :order belongs_to :user belongs_to :billing_option end When validation fails, my models attributes are translated correctly, but the modelname itself is not.   When I call a SQL statement via JDBC on the DB2 and the statement fails, I catch an SQLException with the following message text: com.ibm.db2.jcc.a.nn: DB2 SQL Error: SQLCODE=-206, SQLSTATE=42703, SQLERRMC=O.METADATENSATZ, DRIVER=3.52.95 I tried an automatic translation of the message according to the error list published by IBM, but there are placeholders inside the messages referencing other elements of the exception. While looking for these elements inside the exception, I found the DB2ExceptionFormatter and tried to use it to access the missing elements. But here I stopped, because the DB2ExceptionFormatter gave me a clue: Error occurred while trying to obtain message text from server. Only message tokens are available. So my question is: What do I have to configure to get the correct messages from the DB2 server? If I can get a human readable message from the server, I could use it directly and wouldn't have to translate it by myself.

• Override the neutral language of a specific resource file within an assembly

  I have an assembly that contains several resource files. Most of them have the neutral language 'nl' (Dutch, specified on the assembly as the neutral language), so I don't specify the 'nl' in their filenames. However, I'm putting strings in the English language in some other resource files (they are internal error messages) and I will never provide Dutch translations of them. If I name those resource files something like 'Errors.en.resx', no designer class is generated (breaks the build) because there is no 'Errors.resx'. This is annoying because now I have to put 'en' strings into a 'nl'-implied resource file and I really don't want to translate those strings to 'nl' or provide empty strings just to satisfy the compiler. Is there a way to override the neutral language on a specific resource file or perhaps somehow have the 'Errors.en.resx' build a designer class?

  I'd like to be able to define lambdas using common Lisp syntax, in Clojure. For example: (lambda (myarg) (some-functions-that-refer-to myarg)) This needs to result in the same as: #(some-functions-that-refer-to %) In my case, I know I'll always have exactly one arg, so perhaps that simplifies things. (But it can be called anything -- "myarg" or whatever.) I suspect a workable solution is to "(defmacro lambda ...". If so, I'm not sure of the best way to proceed. How to cleanly translate the arg name to %? And how to end up with the correct function? Or, is there a simpler solution than writing my own macro that actually re-implements Clojure's... lambda?

  I was just reading this excellent post, and got some better understanding of what exactly object oriented programming is, how Java implements it in one extreme manner, and how functional programming languages are a contrast.   My google Docs Spreadsheet call returns this response in the json format (I only need everything after "rows") please look at the formatted response here : ) I use php's json_decode function to parse the data and use it (Yes, I am awful at php) This code returns NULL, and according to the documentation, NULL is returned "if the json cannot be decoded". $json = file_get_contents($jsonurl); $json_output = json_decode($json); var_dump ($json_output); // Returns NULL Basically, what i want to accomplish is to make a simple array from the first row values of the Json response. like this $array = {'john','John Handcock','[email protected]','2929292','blanc'} You guys are genius, I would appreciate your insight and help on this very much! • How do I trap the ENTER key in WM 6.1 using C++

  Hi,Our barcode scanner application is written in C++ eMbedded V 4.00 and works well on the Motorola MC50 WM5 where the ENTER key is interpreted as an IDOK. We are moving the app to the MC55 with WM6.1 and the ENTER key does not translate to an IDOK. I'm of the impression we will have to programatically trap the key entry (or the value passed on via DataWedge). I have made several attempts to implement either a HOTKEY or something via an Accelerator Table but have been unable to interpret the Microsoft on-line descriptions. If there is a simpler answer that would be good news. If not, a more specific example than the MS samples would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• What are Windows code pages?

  I'm trying to gain a basic understanding of what is meant by a Windows code page. I kind of get the feeling it's a translation between a given 8 bit value and some 'abstraction' for a given character graphic. I made the following experiment. I created a "" character literal with two versions of the letter u with an umlaut. One created using the ALT 129 (uses code page 437) value and one using the ALT 0252 (uses code page 1252) value. When I examined the literal both characters had the value 252. Is 252 the universal 8 bit abstraction for u with an umlaut? Is it the Unicode value? Aside from keyboard input are there any library routines or system calls that use code pages? For example is there a function to translate a string using a given code table (as above for the ALT 129 value)?

• C# WCF/WebService: Interoperable exception handling.

  I understand that WCF will convert an exception into a fault and send it back as a SOAP message, but I was wondering if this is truly interoperable. I guess I'm having a tough time trying to figure out this possible scenario: Client (Java) calls a WCF Service (LoginService). Server checks for proper authorization, user authorization fails. Server throws an UnauthorizedAccessException. WCF converts this into a Fault somehow. (* - See Below As Well) Client has to be able to know how to read this Fault. I guess I'm just having a tough time understanding how this could still be interoperable because it is expecting Java to know how to translate a SOAP Fault that .NET encodes from an UnauthorizedAccessException. Also, how does .NET actually convert the exception to a fault, what goes in as the fault code, name, etc. Some of the things seem to be "duh"s like perhaps the Fault Name is "UnauthorizedAccessException", but I'd rather know for sure than guess.

  Hello everyone, I'm looking for a way to determine if the user switches virtual desktops under X11. I'm using Python with X11 libraries and PyGTK. I found some working examples in C, but I lack the expertise to translate them into Python, and I read the source code of several X11 pager applications (fbpanel, pypanel), but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Do I have to register for a signal? Using X11 or GTK? Do I have to busy-wait? I'm completely new to both X11 and GTK, so any hints/help would be greatly appreciated. • What's going to replace HTML & CSS & JS?

  HTML and CSS are showing their age. SASS generates CSS (because CSS isn't clean enough). Graphic Designers don't work in HTML, they work in graphics tools then have to translate it to HTML/CSS. JavaScript has to have abstractions like jQuery, and CSS has a bunch of hacks to even start approaching consistent predictable user experience. It feels like people are doing some wonderful things despite the technologies, not because of them. Surely there is a better way?!? Something more closely aligned with the task at hand.. of providing a fluid intuitive (consistent) user experience to let users achieve their goals. Thoughts?
