• Group Policy processing and autologon on Windows 7

  I'm trying to accomplish a few things via Group Policy on Windows 7. Software Installation, map drives, map printer, etc. I've got these computers set to autologon. The problem I'm running into is that the computers logon before DHCP has done its thing. Therefore, they don't apply any group policies properly. How do I fix this? I've already set a policy to "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon". I've read up a bit and this doesn't actually mean that it waits for DHCP. So it's a little pointless. Anything that would delay logon would work. Or if I can somehow make the computer wait for DHCP.

• Who moved this PC here aka Locate which port on switch a PC is plugged into

  The catch is you have no SNMP access, not even public. The end vision is locate a PC in building easily even if PC's are moved around. The MAC address of the PC is known and the software would run as client on each desktop, reporting back which port the PC was plugged into. Well from a programmer perspective, my network skills are not the best. Yes I could use SNMP, download the MAC port table, load it into SQL, match it to the PC name. Seems alot of work. Lets say I ping a single point from the PC. Would the echo have some thing unique for each device on the same switch? All I need to identify some thing unique for each PC plugged into each port. If the PC was moved from location A to a different location then the unique response would change.

• Google Reader offline sync (Gears) not syncing, stuck at 0%

  I'm using Google Chrome, and for some reason starting over the weekend or Friday, I haven't been able to get Google Reader to sync for offline reading. When I hit the sync button, it just starts spinning and says: "Status: Downloading 2000 items...0% completed. Please wait..." There's no CPU, network, or disk activity on my machine, and it remains in this state indefinitely. I tried going to Chrome Settings, uninstalling Reader, navigating to Reader, and reinstalling Reader as a Gears app, to no avail. Any hints? Thanks in advance.

• SQL SERVER – Concurrancy Problems and their Relationship with Isolation Level

  Concurrency is simply put capability of the machine to support two or more transactions working with the same data at the same time. This usually comes up with data is being modified, as during the retrieval of the data this is not the issue. Most of the concurrency problems can be avoided by SQL Locks. There are four types of concurrency problems visible in the normal programming. 1)      Lost Update – This problem occurs when there are two transactions involved and both are unaware of each other. The transaction which occurs later overwrites the transactions created by the earlier update. 2)      Dirty Reads – This problem occurs when a transactions selects data that isn’t committed by another transaction leading to read the data which may not exists when transactions are over. Example: Transaction 1 changes the row. Transaction 2 changes the row. Transaction 1 rolls back the changes. Transaction 2 has selected the row which does not exist. 3)      Nonrepeatable Reads – This problem occurs when two SELECT statements of the same data results in different values because another transactions has updated the data between the two SELECT statements. Example: Transaction 1 selects a row, which is later on updated by Transaction 2. When Transaction A later on selects the row it gets different value. 4)      Phantom Reads – This problem occurs when UPDATE/DELETE is happening on one set of data and INSERT/UPDATE is happening on the same set of data leading inconsistent data in earlier transaction when both the transactions are over. Example: Transaction 1 is deleting 10 rows which are marked as deleting rows, during the same time Transaction 2 inserts row marked as deleted. When Transaction 1 is done deleting rows, there will be still rows marked to be deleted. When two or more transactions are updating the data, concurrency is the biggest issue. I commonly see people toying around with isolation level or locking hints (e.g. NOLOCK) etc, which can very well compromise your data integrity leading to much larger issue in future. • Problems with Xen installation

  Hello, I have CentOS 5.4 installed. Now I'm trying to install Xen with out connecting to Internet (I have any driver for modem, so I search on Inernet only from Windows). All I have are 7 installation disks. First I done was to find kind of some add/remove programs wizard but it needed connection to Inernet. Second I try was to find Xen rpm on all disks and install it. But I fell on some dependency of some dependency. Third I attempted was to boot from first disk and do upgrade, but also it was unsuccessfully... So my question is: is there some way to install Xen from CentOS installation disks with out network? • Will new Acer Revo (with Atom 330) be fast enough to be MythTV client/server?

  As a geek I really like Atom CPUs but can't find a reason to buy one yet :( Although I was thinking about making my own DVR with NAS and media center functionality. Unfortunately, even today's Acer Revo, built on ION platform is not fast enough for streaming Full HD videos. So what do you think, will new two core CPU make it better, will it be able to show Full HD videos, store them to disk and transfer something over the network at the same time? Will it be able to scale videos from Hulu and YouTube to fullscreen?

• SQL Server: Is it possible to prevent SQL Agent from failing a step on error?

  I have a stored procedure that runs custom backups for around 60 SQL servers (mixes 2000 through 2008R2). Occasionally, due to issues outside of my control (backup device inaccessible, network error, etc.) an individual backup on one or two databases will fail. This causes this entire step to fail, which means any subsequent backup commands are not executed and half of the databases on a given server may not be backed up. On the 2005+ boxes I am using TRY/CATCH blocks to manage these problems and continue backing up the remaining databases. On a 2000 server however, for example, I have no way to prevent this error from failing the entire step: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot open backup device 'db-diff(\PATH\DB-DIFF-03-16-2010.DIF)'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. I am simply asking if anything like this is possible in SQL 2000 or if I need to go in a completely different direction.

• How does I/O work for large graph databases?

  I should preface this by saying that I'm mostly a front end web developer, trained as a musician, but over the past few years I've been getting more and more into computer science. So one idea I have as a fun toy project to learn about data structures and C programming was to design and implement my own very simple database that would manage an adjacency list of posts. I don't want SQL (maybe I'll do my own query language? I'm just having fun). It should support ACID. It should be capable of storing 1TB let's say. So with that, I was trying to think of how a database even stores data, without regard to data structures necessarily. I'm working on linux, and I've read that in that world "everything is a file," including hardware (like /dev/*), so I think that that obviously has to apply to a database, too, and it clearly does--whether it's MySQL or PostgreSQL or Neo4j, the database itself is a collection of files you can see in the filesystem. That said, there would come a point in scale where loading the entire database into primary memory just wouldn't work, so it doesn't make sense to design it with that mindset (I assume). However, reading from secondary memory would be much slower and regardless some portion of the database has to be in primary memory in order for you to be able to do anything with it. I read this post: Why use a database instead of just saving your data to disk? And I found it difficult to understand how other databases, like SQLite or Neo4j, read and write from secondary memory and are still very fast (faster, it would seem, than simply writing files to the filesystem as the above question suggests). It seems the key is indexing. But even indexes need to be stored in secondary memory. They are inherently smaller than the database itself, but indexes in a very large database might be prohibitively large, too. So my question is how is I/O generally done with large databases like the one I described above that would be at least 1TB storing a big adjacency list? If indexing is more or less the answer, how exactly does indexing work--what data structures should be involved?

• Which kerberos flavor?

  So I'm setting up a small network with all the standard stuff (files, email, etc.) and I've decided to go with a Kerberos+LDAP solution. Any ideas or recommendations on Heimdal vs. MIT? I've used MIT before, and tangentially Heimdal, but I don't really know of any real reason for using one over the other. I just know that I'd prefer not to realize I'd rather be running MIT after getting the whole Heimdal up and running with a full user database. If any other info'd be useful, I'm happy to provide.

  When you encounter shortened URLs there is always that worry in the back of your mind about where they really lead to. Now you can get a “sneak peak” at the real links behind those URLs with the View Thru extension for Google Chrome. The URL Shortening services officially supported at this time are: bit.ly, cli.gs, ff.im, goo.gl, is.gd, nyti.ms, ow.ly, post.ly, su.pr, & tinyurl.com. Before When you encounter a shortened URL you are pretty much on your own in deciding whether to trust that link or not. It would really be nice if you could just hover your mouse over those links and know where they will lead ahead of time. After Once you have the extension installed you are ready to access that link viewing goodness. Please note that you will need to reload any pages that were open prior to installing the extension. For our first example we chose a shortened URL from “bit.ly”. As you can see the entire link behind the shortened URL is displayed very nicely…no hidden surprises there! Note: There are no options to worry with for the extension. Another perfect result for the “goo.gl URL” shown below. View Thru will certainly remove a lot of the stress related to clicking on shortened URLs. Bonus Find Just out of curiosity we looked for a shortened URL not listed as being officially supported at this time. We found one with the “http://nyti.ms/” domain and View Thru showed the link perfectly…so be sure to give it a try on other services too. Conclusion If you worry about where a shortened URL will really lead you then the View Thru extension can help alleviate that stress. • Help with IPTables - Masquerading + Forwarding, 1-to-1?

  I've got a clean Ubuntu Server 10.10 with OpenSSH, OpenVPN and vsFTPd installed. The server is running as a VM on the Hyper-V server (hypervisor), has two network interfaces mapped to physical adapters (eth0 and eth1), and a virtual interface with a direct connection to the hypervisor (eth2). The VPN will create a tun0 interface when a client connects. What I want is the remote user, connecting over VPN to be able to connect to the hypervisor (all ports, ping etc). The initial idea was to make the VPN create a tap0 interface, and bridge eth2 to tap0, but this didn't work, unfortunately, as it seems that the adapters don't want to go into promiscuous mode (partially confirmed by MS) At the same time, both the hypervisor and the remove client over VPN can successfully ping/connect to the ubuntu server with no problems. So my plan right now is to try doing some 1-1 masquerading, if possible. Basically, I want every request sent from the VPN client to the ubuntu server to be redurected to the hypervisor instead (with IP translation ofc), and every request from the hypervisor to the ubuntu machine sent to the VPN client (IP translated too). Only 1 client will be connected at a time to the VPN, so I can force limit it to a single IP at all times, if necessary. Is this the right way to go, and if true, how can this be achieved? It's almost like a special case of port-forwarding, except every single port on tun0 is forwarded to a machine in eth2, and every port on the eth2 side forwards to an ip on tun0 I guess it could be done with iptables, but I'm rather new in linux, so I can't do it myself... help? :(

  Some of this question would be highly application-specific, but what approaches do you take when looking to migrate applications from one server/platform to another and servers form one network segment to another? For applications that can't be re-IP'd (many exist in this category), the general answer is to nuke and pave (or extend a clusterable application, then remove the segment that needs to be "moved"). For "normal" applications (httpd, mail, directory services, etc), what are the checks ou perform before, during, and after a move to ensure the health of the migrated app/server? • Thomson TG585v7 router - promiscuous mode

  I have a TG585v7 as a router with several machines plugged into it. In the default setup, the packets are only delivered to the specific machine but I want to be able to setup to monitor all network traffic on one of the machines, i.e. I need those packets to be picked up when my ethernet card is in promiscuous mode. Is this possible? Guide here has this "mcastpromisc Make the IP interface multicast promiscuous. OPTIONAL", is this what I am looking for? Does it mean I need to manually add all my machines by their MAC addresses to be able to receive packets destined for them? Or am I out of luck and I need to get a better router?

• Force10 S60 remote management

  We've got a Force10 S60 switch to replace an older Cisco. I can't find a way to give the switch itself an IP address on the local VLAN so I can ssh to it. The config guide talks about using either a management interface on a separate management network or dedicating e.g. a gigabit port as a management port with a dedicated IP address. Ideally I would like to do what we do currently with the Cisco switches, which is in effect give the entire switch an IP so it can be reached from any host on the same VLAN without having to use up a physical port on the switch or physically connect the management port to another device. Is this possible with the S60 and if so, how would you give it, say the address 10.0.1.1 in vlan 10 (10.0.1.1/24)? Thanks!!!

Oracle Database Firewall is a network-based software solution that monitors database traffic, and can detect and block SQL injection and other attacks from reaching Oracle and non-Oracle databases. • what causes drops in apache throughput?

  i was poking around in the windows task manager, and i found this cool network throughput graphing thing. so i wanted to see it max out, so i started downloading a 1.8gb image (from the localhost to a remote system). but, much to my surprise, it looked like this: i count 16 dips, so i divided the 1.8gb into 16 and i got 115mb. then i looked up the mtu of ip, and i knew the mtu of ethernet from my reading, both far smaller than 115mb. and since tcp is connection orientated, it doesn't have an mtu.

• OSX: Why does an uninstalled program ask for inbound connections on login? How do I fix this?

  I uninstalled an application using AppZapper called PdaNet. It is a tethering application for my phone. Now every time I login, I am asked if I would like to allow inboud connections from PdaNet by the firewall. A search for PdaNet with spotlight does not return any results. PdaNet creates its own Ethernet in network preferences. This hung around after uninstall. I deleted it but it did not make a difference. Any ideas? Mac OS X 10.6.4

• Adding a virtual directory IIS 7.5 Windows 7 Ultimate x64

  Trying to get my IIS 7.5 playing nice with VS 2008 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I'm getting this error: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. This happens when accessing a virtual directory outside C:\inetpub\wwwroot. I'd like to be able to create virtual directories outside the root if I can. I've added the NETWORK SERVICE to the folder hosting the virtual directory, still no luck. This folder is on my C: drive, not a share. TIA

• Multiple PXE server same subnet

  I've been struggling with this for some time. I have a few test machines that boot from the network, they receive the boot data from the DHCP server, this tells them who is the boot server where is the file they'll boot etc. However, I need to add a second PXE server in the same subnet (create another Vlan is not an option right now). I read somewhere that I may be able to send certain parameters to certain machines based on their MAC address (this way choosing what computers boot from what server) however I cannot find how to do this, anyone knows how? this will be my solution but I cannot find the answer. My DHCP is a windows server 2003 I have 2 servers running custom flavors of Linux server as TFTP servers. Some machines use data to boot from server 1, and the others must bu able to boot from server 2. Thx

• Configure Nginx On Separate Server For Zimbra Webmail

  How do I properly configure a server with nginx to front for a Zimbra server with multiple domains? I run a small SOHO network. I NAT/port forwarding on my Comcast router to get traffic to my handful of servers. I setup a server with Zimbra, call it host1.internal.local. The server currently has two domains, call them domain1.com and domain2.com. Both offer webmail access at webmail.domain1.com and webmail.domain2.com. I have a separate server with nginx. I want to configure nginx to reverse proxy, such that I can direct all HTTP/HTTPS, and send webmail traffic via matched host address/headers to the Zimbra server. If possible, I'd like to know how to map IMAP, POP and SMTP traffic too. How would I do this?

  I'm trying to load Exchange Management Shell and it gives me a big 'ol red error that says: Import-Module : There were errors in loading the format data file: Microsoft.PowerShell, , %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Exchange\RemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml : File skipped because of the following validation exception: File %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Exchange\RemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml cannot be loaded. The file %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\ExchangeRemotePowerShell\DOMAINNAME\DOMAINNAME.format.ps1xml is not digitally signed. The script will not execute on the system. Please see "get-help about_signing" for more details... The %APPDATA% is stored on an external server on my network (that I can ping to without problems). I am missing a ton of PS cmdlets too, which I'm presuming are stored in '*.format.ps1xml' I tried finding the directory in which format.ps1xml is supposed to reside on the external server and it's not even created. Can someone tell me where to start?

• Connect to virtual host computer from within virtualbox

  I'm currently developing on an ubuntu karmic. For this I've installed lampp with a virtual host on apache so http://myproject/ is mapped to my project's root directory. Now to test the website in IE I've installed an XP machine on a virtualBox OSE. Ive managed to get the virtual host working on the XP by adding its to the hostfile, like this: 255.255.255.255 myproject where 255.255.255.255 is the ip adress of the host computer (my ubuntu). Now every day when I come to work and plug in my computer to the network, my IP has changed. so When i boot the XP I have to change the IP in the hostfile to my new IP. Is there any way where I can set the ip to somthing the XP will recognise as the host machine? I've tried replacing the IP in the hostfile by the host computer name, but that does not seem to work... This would make my like a bit easier :)

  To share the latest information with the community we use the SOA Community Workspace (SOA Community membership required). At the workspace you can find training material, product presentations in ppt format, product roadmaps, sales kits, market kits, training calendar and many additional information. Please use this content in the spirit of our partnership, and do not share external confidential material (be aware of the OTN NDA). The workspace is organized by product categories in folders e.g. SOA or Business Process Management or Applications & Fusion Middleware. You can also use tags to navigate within the workspace. For large downloads we do recommend to map the workspace as a network drive or to use the ftp functions. Please be very careful when you use the workspace, as we granted everybody full access including to add and delete documents. Please do NOT delete any content. Each action creates e-mail alerts for subscribed users. You can unsubscribe these alerts at the admin page à navigate to the All Workspaces tab à click on the workspace à switch the subscription off.
