• Removing entity bug

  hello, I am trying out the ria services and I am experiencing this problem that seems very strange to me. I am creating a new entity of type "House" and add it to context without saving the context so the id of the new entity is 0, after i remove this entity and add another new entity of type "House" again and again without saving the context, here comes the weird part, now I have an entity of type "City" which holds entityset of all "Houses" in that city, so to put the newly created entity "House" into the city i do something like this - house.City = city, where house is type "House" and city is type "City", afte this step a check the context and suddenly there are 2 entities of type "House" with id 0, one of them is the one I have deleted at the beginning. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?? thank you Greg

• Mysql stored procedures

  Hello, I have a unique issue that I need advice on. I've been writing asp.net apps with SQL Server back ends for the past 10 years. During that time, I have also written some PHP apps, but not many. I'm going to be porting some of my asp.net apps to PHP and have run into a bit of an issue. In the Asp.net world, it's generally understood that when accessing any databases, using views or stored procedures is the preferred way of doing so. I've been reading some PHP/MySQL books and I'm beginning to get the impression that utilizing stored procedures in mysql is not advisable. I hesitate in using that word, advisable, but that's just the felling I get. So, the advice I'm looking for is basically, am I right or wrong? Do PHP developers use stored procedures at all? Or, is it something that is shunned? Thanks in advance.

• IoC from start to finish

  I'm quite sure that IoC is the way to go for my application. There are a ton of articles and even questions here on SO that discuss the different containers. I've read several blogs today with partial examples. I am personally leaning towards starting with the CommonServiceLocator and Unity as two way to solve the same problem -- I just need a bunch of assemblies to get data from a database, which I assume is what needs to be injected everywhere. I've yet to find any sites that really take a problem from beginning to end, with concrete code examples. For example, I've yet to find one that discusses an IServiceLocator and how to actually register it (or do whatever is required to make it known). What are your favorite posts / articles / SO questions that can take a noob from start to finish with the implementation?

• Real-time data on webpage with Django and jQuery

  I would like a webpage that constantly updates a graph with new data as it arrives. Regularly, all the data you have is passed to a Django view at the beginning of the request. However, I need the page to be able to update itself with fresh information every few seconds to redraw the graph. Background The webpage will be similar to this http://www.panic.com/blog/2010/03/the-panic-status-board/. The data coming in will temperature values to be graphed measured by an Arduino and saved to the Django database (I've already done this part).

• Iterating Oracle collections of objects with out exploding them

  I'm using Oracle object data types to represent a timespan or period. And I've got to do a bunch of operations that involve working with collections of periods. Iterating over collections in SQL is significantly faster than in PL/SQL. CREATE TYPE PERIOD AS OBJECT ( beginning DATE, ending DATE, ... some member functions...); CREATE TYPE PERIOD_TABLE AS TABLE OF PERIOD; -- sample usage SELECT <<period object>>.contains(period2) FROM TABLE(period_table1) t The problem is that the TABLE() function explodes the objects into scalar values, and I really need the objects instead. I could use the scalar values to recreate the objects but this would incur the overhead of re-instantiating the objects. And the period is designed to be subclassed so there would be additional difficulty trying to figure out what to initialize it as. Is there another way to do this that doesn't destroy my objects?

• glibc backtrace - can't redirect output to file

  Hi, I'm in the process of debugging a C program (that I didn't write). I have all of the internal debugging tools (a whole bunch of printf's) enabled, and I wrote a small PHP script that uses proc_open() and just grabs both stdout and stderr, and time-coordinates them in one file. At the moment, the binary is dieing with a realloc() error that's caught by glibc, and a glibc backtrace is printed, beginning with: *** glibc detected *** /sbin/rsyslogd: realloc(): invalid next size: 0x00002ace626ac910 *** Here's the thing I don't understand: I've confirmed that the PHP script is catching both stdout and stderr from the binary's process and writing them to the correct files, but this backtrace is still printed to the console. Where is this coming from? Is there some magical output channel other than stdout and stderr? Any ideas on how I go about capturing this backtrace to a file, or sending it out with stderr? • source control when starting up a new project

  when starting with a project and using source control i find it hard to separate the things people are working on so they don't either write duplicate code or think it should be named one thing and so on. this problem diminishes over time because the general foundation is in place and it's easier to separate the tasks so they don't overlap as much how do you manage working with source control in the beginning phase? EDIT: I can see that it don't really have anything to do with source control, but it gets more apparent when you have source control too. so the question becomes more along the lines of "how do you manage to separate the tasks so they don't overlap too much. I think it's really hard and i haven't really seen much about how to do it.

• Why don't stacks grow upwards (for security)?

  This is related to the question 'Why do stacks typically grow downwards?', but more from a security point of view. I'm generally referring to x86. It strikes me as odd that the stack would grow downwards, when buffers are usually written to upwards in memory. For example a typical C++ string has its end at a higher memory address than the beginning. This means that if there's a buffer overflow you're overwriting further up the call stack, which I understand is a security risk, since it opens the possibility of changing return addresses and local variable contents. If the stack grew upwards in memory, wouldn't buffer overflows simply run in to dead memory? Would this improve security? If so, why hasn't it been done? What about x64, do those stacks grow upwards and if not why not?

• Getting started with writing a desktop app that talks to an iPhone

  I'm thinking of writing an app to selectively transfer photos/music to and from my iPhone, mostly for fun and personal convenience. However, I'm stuck at the very beginning -- where do I look to find information on how to do this? Pretty much every link I see talks about developing applications that run on the iPhone, but nothing about desktop app for interfacing with an iPhone. I'm on Windows (no access to a Mac, but I'll take suggestions for that for when I eventually acquire one), and I'm most familiar with C#, but other languages are definitely an option. Can anybody offer me a few pointers on getting started? Thanks.

• How to refresh an activity? Map View refresh fails

  Hi Guys, after implementing some Android Apps, including several Map activities, I try to refresh the activity when the GPS listener's onLocationChanged() mehtod is called. I have no idea how to tell the map activity to refresh on its own and display the new coords... the coords to store will have to be in global values, so that the location listener will have access to it. In my sample GPS-class (see code below) I just changed the text of a text view....but how to do that in map view? private class MyLocationListener implements LocationListener { @Override public void onLocationChanged(Location loc) { final TextView tv = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.myTextView); if (loc != null) { tv.setText("Location changed : Lat: " + loc.getLatitude() + " Lng: " + loc.getLongitude()); } } I think the solution of this Problem won't be very difficult, but I just need the beginning ;-) This whole app shall work like a really simple navigation system. • Binding jQuery UI plugin after $.load

My problem comes in when I load form elements using $.load(). I cannot attach the DatePicker to any of the loaded elements. For example: $("#id").load("urlToLoad", function() { bindDatepicker($("input.date")); }); Loads the form elements into a div just fine, but will not attach the DatePicker. Why is this? • Move entire line up and down in Vim

  In Notepad++, I can use ctrl + shift + up/down to move the current line up and down. Is there a similar command to this in Vim? I have looked through endless guides, but have found nothing. If there isn't, how could I bind the action to that key combination? Edit: Mykola's answer works for all lines, apart from those at the beginning and end of the buffer. Moving the first line up or the bottom line down deletes the line, and when moving the bottom line up it jumps two spaces initially, like a pawn! Can anyone offer any refinements?

• understanding silverlight resource file format

  I'm trying to understand the format of silverlight resource files. There are 4 bytes of the data comes after PAD. I'd like to know what these values are, and how they are generated. here is the hex dump of a .g.resources file. Here is what I know: there is 0xbeefcace at the beginning, then there is dependancies, then padding. after that is the great unknown (but I really like to know). After 4 null bytes, are the file name and size of the resource. and After that is content of the said file. I'm not that familiar with .Net and silverlight resource management. would someone please tell me what the mystical 4 bytes are, or point me the url to the specification doc or something. Any help would be appreciated!

• What would you like to see in an beginner's ASP.NET security book

  This is a shameless information gathering exercise for my own book. One of the talks I give in the community is an introduction to web site vulnerabilities. Usually during the talk I can see at least two members of the audience go very pale; and this is basic stuff, Cross Site Scripting, SQL Injection, Information Leakage, Cross Site Form Requests and so on. So, if you can think back to being one, as a beginning web developer (be it ASP.NET or not) what do you feel would be useful information about web security and how to develop securely? I will already be covering the OWASP Top Ten (And yes this means stackoverflow will be in the acknowledgements list if someone comes up with something I haven't thought of yet!) • elisp newbie question: Can't find 'filename' function definition in org.el?

  I really love org-mode in emacs and want to customize a few things. While reading thru org.el, I'm finding several references to filename but can't find filename using describe-function? I'm sure there's a simple answer, but I'm just learning elisp and it's not obvious. Any insight into where filename is defined? And/or if it's not a function, what is it? • Is a successor for TeX/LaTeX in sight?

  TeX/LaTeX is great, I use it in many ways. Some of it's advantages are: it uses text files, this way the input-files can be diffed and many tools exist to work with text it is very flexible it has a stable layout: if I change something at the start of the document, it doesn't affect other things at the end of the document it has many extensions to reach different goals (a successor would start without extensions, but would have a good extension-system) you can use standard build control tools to support complicated documents (thanks dmckee) you can encapsulate solutions and copy&paste them to new documents or send them to others to learn from (thanks dmckee) But on the other hand some little things are not so good: it is hard to learn at the beginning it is complicated to control position of images a few things are a little counter-intuitive sometimes you have to type too much (begin{itemize} ... \end{itemize}) So, does there exist a successor/alternative to LaTeX or at least is some hot candidate for an alternative in development. A real successor/good alternative would keep the advantages and fix the disadvantages, or at least some of them.

• Is it safe to catch an access violation in this scenario?

  I've read a lot, including here on SO that suggests this is a very bad idea in general and that the only thing you can do safely is exit the program. I'm not sure that this is true. This is for a pooling memory allocator that hands off large allocations to malloc. During pool_free() a pointer needs to be checked it it belongs to a pool or was allocated with malloc. By rounding the address down to the nearest 1MB boundary, I get a pointer to the beginning of a block of memory in the pool, or undefined if malloc was used. In the first case I can easily verify that the block of memory belongs to the pool, but, if it does not I will either fail this verification, or I will get an access violation (note that this is a read-only process). Could I not catch this with SEH (Windows) or handle the signal (POSIX) and simply treat it as a failed verification? (i.e. this is only possible if malloc was used, so pass the ptr to free())

• Visual Studio 2010 Formatting

  I have plenty of experience with Eclipse, and now I'm trying out Visual Studio 2010. I find its formatting somewhat counter-intuitive. Here are some things I'm trying to figure out: Is there a way to select all text and format/indent it properly, like SHIFT+A SHIFT+I in Eclipse? Why is it that when I type a line like if (n == 0) {, as soon as I type the opening brace, the text cursor is moved to the beginning of the line? Is this some productivity speedup I'm failing to see? When I hit ENTER after the aforementioned line, I'd like the closing brace to be put in place automatically for me. How can I do this? I've looked for hotkey documentation, and it's helped a bit, but this still feels clunky to me.

• GXT/GWT html content reloads when switching tabs

  I am working on a GXT/GWT project. I have two tabs in which content is set based on selections from a drop down menu. The content in one tab is an embedded video (Google Video or youtube video) The problem is that when switching tabs, the video reloads and starts from the beginning again. What I would like is to be able to switch tabs and have the video continue to play or pause when the focus switches to another tab. Any ideas, as always, are greatly appreciated. Cheers, Ben

• AutoKey - clipboard.get_selection() function fails on certain strings

  I've simplified my script so you can focus on the essence my problem. In AutoKey (not AutoHotKey), I made a Hot-Key (shift-alt-T) that performs this script on any string I have highlighted (like in gedit for example -- but any other gui editor too). strSelectedText = clipboard.get_selection() keyboard.send_keys(" " + strSelectedText) The script modifies the highlighted text and adds a space to the beginning of the string. It works for most strings I highlight, but not this one: * Copyright © 2008–2012 Lonnie Best. Licensed under the MIT License. It works for this string: * Add a Space 2.0.1 but not on this one: * Add a Space 2.0.1 – At the python command prompt, it has no problem any of those strings, yet the clipboard.get_selection() function seems to get corrupted by them. I'm rather new to python scripting, so I'm not sure if this is an AutoKey bug, or if I'm missing some knowledge I should know about encoding/preparing strings in python. Please help. I'm doing this on Ubuntu 12.04: sudo apt-get install autokey-qt

• A realistic and usable (VS2010) MVC2 project template?

  Hello. everybody. The default MVC2 web project template which VS2010 creates when you select "ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application" is quite a nice start... but nowhere near a realistic app framework. E.G.: user accounts without such features as password recover easily customizabile (and maybe multilingual) error messages an interface to manage users, such a searcheable user list, user edit and so on which an admin can use and these are just the beginning of the usual, mandatory basic features a web site of any size may use. Searching through the online projects templates doesn't seem to help, ehiter. Are there any project template sites or else that you are aware of, that gives such features? thanks a lot!

• QScrollBar Snap to value

  Hi all, I'm wanting to implement a scroll bar that snaps to particular values (like windows can snap to the edge of a screen). The idea is that as I drag the scrollbar down it snaps the bar to values as it approaches them. My scenario is displaying 3 chapters of text. I would like to be able to snap to the beginning or end of a chapter. Of course, to go to the start of the first chapter the scrollbar one can just scroll to the top and likewise with the end of the third chapter. So I'd like to draw two lines on the scrollbar to represent the start of the second and third chapters and then have the top and bottom of the scrollbar snap to those lines. So I'm really actually wanting to use this within a QTextBrowser but I can control a QTextBrowser with a "QSnapScrollBar" I just don't really know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I have an UIScrollview that is zoomable, the subview is one UIView (viewTexto) that contains an UILabel inside (messageLabel). I need that the width of the UILabel adopts to the scrollView width again as at the beginning. I have read any question about UIScrollViews in SO and having found exactly what I need.

  I've been trying to solve this problem for a number of days now but I must be missing something. Known Variables: vi = Initial Velocity t = Animation Duration d = Distance The function I'm trying to create: D(t) = the current distance for a given time Using this information I want to be able to create a smooth animation curve with varying velocity (ease-in/ease-out). The animation must be able ease-in from an initial velocity. The animation must be exactly t seconds and must be travel exactly d units. The curve should lean towards the average velocity with acceleration occurring at the beginning and the end portions of the curve. I'm open to extra configuration variables. The best I've been able to come up with is something that doesn't factor in the initial velocity. I'm hoping someone smarter can help me out. ;) Thank you! p.s.   I'm a beginner at Maven and I've played with it from a command line point of view a little, so now I was trying to use it in Eclipse; I installed the m2eclipse plugin to do so. But I'm stumped from the very beginning! Apparently I've missed a bit of terminology somewhere along the line. I can't keep track of all these new Maven terms... What is a Maven Project, and what is a Maven Module? These are my options when creating a new project in the Maven category in Eclipse.
