  • How to Add a Taskbar to the Desktop in Ubuntu 14.04

    - by Lori Kaufman
    If you’ve switched to Ubuntu from Windows, it may take some time to get used to the new and different interface. However, you can easily incorporate a familiar Windows feature, the Taskbar, into Ubuntu to make the transition easier. A tool called Tint2 provides a bar at the bottom of the Ubuntu Desktop that resembles the Windows Taskbar. We will show you how to install it and make it start every time you log into Ubuntu. NOTE: When we say to type something in this article and there are quotes around the text, DO NOT type the quotes, unless we specify otherwise. Press Ctrl + Alt + T to open a Terminal window. To install Tint2, type the following line at the prompt and press Enter. sudo apt-get install tint2 Type your password at the prompt and press Enter. The progress of the installation displays and then a message displays saying how much disk space will be used. When asked if you want to continue, type a “y” and press Enter. When the installation has finished, close the Terminal window by typing “exit” at the prompt and pressing Enter. Click the Search button at the top of the Unity bar. Start typing “startup applications” in the Search box. Items that match what you type start displaying below the Search box. When the Startup Applications tool displays, click the icon to open it. On the Startup Applications Preferences window, click Add. On the Add Startup Program dialog box, enter a name for the startup application. This name displays in the list on the Startup Applications Preferences window. Type “tint2” in the Command edit box, enter a description in the Comment edit box, if desired, and click Add. Tint2 is added as a startup program and will start every time you log into Ubuntu. Click Close to close the Startup Applications Preferences window. Log out and log back in to make the Taskbar available on the desktop. You do not need to reboot the computer for this change to take effect. Now, when you minimize a program, an icon for it displays on the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, just like the Taskbar in Windows. If you decide that you don’t want the Taskbar to display every time you log into Ubuntu, you can uncheck the Tint2 startup program on the Startup Applications Preferences window. You don’t need to delete it from the list.

  • Box2D Difference Between WorldCenter and Position

    - by Free Lancer
    So this problem has been brothering for a couple of days now. First off, what is the difference between say Body.getWorldCenter() and Body.getPosition(). I heard that WorldCenter might have to do with the center of gravity or something. Second, When I create a Box2D Body for a sprite the Body is always at the lower left corner. I check it by printing a Rectangle of 1 pixel around the box.getWorldCenter(). From what I understand the Body should be in the center of the Sprite and its bounding box should wrap around the Sprite, correct? Here's an image of what I mean (The Sprite is Red, Body Blue): Here's some code: Body Creator: public static Body createBoxBody( final World pPhysicsWorld, final BodyType pBodyType, final FixtureDef pFixtureDef, Sprite pSprite ) { float pRotation = 0; float pCenterX = pSprite.getX() + pSprite.getWidth() / 2; float pCenterY = pSprite.getY() + pSprite.getHeight() / 2; float pWidth = pSprite.getWidth(); float pHeight = pSprite.getHeight(); final BodyDef boxBodyDef = new BodyDef(); boxBodyDef.type = pBodyType; //boxBodyDef.position.x = pCenterX / Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO; //boxBodyDef.position.y = pCenterY / Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO; boxBodyDef.position.x = pSprite.getX() / Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO; boxBodyDef.position.y = pSprite.getY() / Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO; Vector2 v = new Vector2( boxBodyDef.position.x * Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO, boxBodyDef.position.y * Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO ); Gdx.app.log("@Physics", "createBoxBody():: Box Position: " + v); // Temporary Box shape of the Body final PolygonShape boxPoly = new PolygonShape(); final float halfWidth = pWidth * 0.5f / Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO; final float halfHeight = pHeight * 0.5f / Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO; boxPoly.setAsBox( halfWidth, halfHeight ); // set the anchor point to be the center of the sprite pFixtureDef.shape = boxPoly; final Body boxBody = pPhysicsWorld.createBody(boxBodyDef); Gdx.app.log("@Physics", "createBoxBody():: Box Center: " + boxBody.getPosition().mul(Constants.PIXEL_METER_RATIO)); boxBody.createFixture(pFixtureDef); boxBody.setTransform( boxBody.getWorldCenter(), MathUtils.degreesToRadians * pRotation ); boxPoly.dispose(); return boxBody; } Making the Sprite: public Car( Texture texture, float pX, float pY, World world ) { super( "Car" ); mSprite = new Sprite( texture ); mSprite.setSize( mSprite.getWidth() / 6, mSprite.getHeight() / 6 ); mSprite.setPosition( pX, pY ); mSprite.setOrigin( mSprite.getWidth()/2, mSprite.getHeight()/2); FixtureDef carFixtureDef = new FixtureDef(); // Set the Fixture's properties, like friction, using the car's shape carFixtureDef.restitution = 1f; carFixtureDef.friction = 1f; carFixtureDef.density = 1f; // needed to rotate body using applyTorque mBody = Physics.createBoxBody( world, BodyDef.BodyType.DynamicBody, carFixtureDef, mSprite ); }

  • Creating a Yes/No MessageBox in a NuGet install/uninstall script

    - by ParadigmShift
    Sometimes getting a little feedback during the install/uninstall process of a NuGet package could be really useful. Instead of accounting for all possible ways to install your NuGet package for every user, you can simplify the installation by clarifying with the user what they want. This example shows how to generate a windows yes/no message box to get input from the user in the PowerShell install or uninstall script. We’ll use the prompt on the uninstall to confirm if the user wants to delete a custom setting that the initial install placed in their configuration.  Obviously you could use the prompt in any way you want. The objects of the message box are generated similar to the controls in the code behind of a WinForm. At the beginning of your script enter this: param($installPath, $toolsPath, $package, $project)   # Set up path variables $solutionDir = Get-SolutionDir $projectName = (Get-Project).ProjectName $projectPath = Join-Path $solutionDir $projectName   ################################################################################################ # WinForm generation for prompt ################################################################################################ function Ask-Delete-Custom-Settings { [void][reflection.assembly]::loadwithpartialname("System.Windows.Forms") [Void][reflection.assembly]::loadwithpartialname("System.Drawing")   $title = "Package Uninstall" $message = "Delete the customized settings?" #Create form and controls $form1 = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.Form $label1 = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.Label $btnYes = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.Button $btnNo = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.Button   #Set properties of controls and form ############ # label1 # ############ $label1.Location = New-Object System.Drawing.Point(12,9) $label1.Name = "label1" $label1.Size = New-Object System.Drawing.Size(254,17) $label1.TabIndex = 0 $label1.Text = $message   ############# # btnYes # ############# $btnYes.Location = New-Object System.Drawing.Point(156,45) $btnYes.Name = "btnYes" $btnYes.Size = New-Object System.Drawing.Size(48,25) $btnYes.TabIndex = 1 $btnYes.Text = "Yes"   ########### # btnNo # ########### $btnNo.Location = New-Object System.Drawing.Point(210,45) $btnNo.Name = "btnNo" $btnNo.Size = New-Object System.Drawing.Size(48,25) $btnNo.TabIndex = 2 $btnNo.Text = "No"   ########### # form1 # ########### $form1.ClientSize = New-Object System.Drawing.Size(281,86) $form1.Controls.Add($label1) $form1.Controls.Add($btnYes) $form1.Controls.Add($btnNo) $form1.Name = "Form1" $form1.Text = $title #Event Handler $btnYes.add_Click({btnYes_Click}) $btnNo.add_Click({btnNo_Click}) return $form1.ShowDialog() } function btnYes_Click { #6 = Yes $form1.DialogResult = 6 } function btnNo_Click { #7 = No $form1.DialogResult = 7 } ################################################################################################ This has also wired up the click events to the form.  This is all it takes to create the message box. Now we have to actually use the message box and get the user’s response or this is all pointless.  We’ll then delete the section of the application/web configuration called <Custom.Settings> [xml] $configXmlContent = Get-Content $configFile   Write-Host "Please respond to the question in the Dialog Box." $dialogResult = Ask-Delete-Custom-Settings #6 = Yes #7 = No Write-Host "dialogResult = $dialogResult" if ($dialogResult.ToString() -eq "Yes") { Write-Host "Deleting customized settings" $customSettingsNode = $configXmlContent.configuration.Item("Custom.Settings") $configXmlContent.configuration.RemoveChild($customSettingsNode) $configXmlContent.Save($configFile) } if ($dialogResult.ToString() -eq "No") { Write-Host "Do not delete customized settings" } The part where I check if ($dialog.Result.ToString() –eq “Yes”) could just as easily check the value for either 6 or 7 (Yes or No).  I just personally decided I liked this way better.   Shahzad Qureshi is a Software Engineer and Consultant in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA His certifications include: Microsoft Certified System Engineer 3CX Certified Partner Global Information Assurance Certification – Secure Software Programmer – .NET He is the owner of Utah VoIP Store at http://www.utahvoipstore.com/ and SWS Development at http://www.swsdev.com/ and publishes windows apps under the name Blue Voice.

  • Styles for XAML (Silverlight &amp; WPF)

    - by GeekAgilistMercenary
    This is a quick walk through of how to setup things for skinning within a XAML Application.  First thing, find the App.xaml file within the WPF or Silverlight Project. Within the App.xaml file set some default styles for your controls.  I set the following for a button, label, and border control for an application I am creating. Button Control <Style x:Key="ButtonStyle" TargetType="Button"> <Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="Arial" /> <Setter Property="FontWeight" Value="Bold" /> <Setter Property="FontSize" Value="14" /> <Setter Property="Width" Value="180" /> <Setter Property="Height" Value="Auto" /> <Setter Property="Margin" Value="8" /> <Setter Property="Padding" Value="8" /> <Setter Property="Foreground" Value="AliceBlue" /> <Setter Property="Background" > <Setter.Value> <LinearGradientBrush EndPoint="0.5,1" StartPoint="0.5,0"> <GradientStop Color="Black" Offset="0" /> <GradientStop Color="#FF5B5757" Offset="1" /> </LinearGradientBrush> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> Label Control <Style x:Key="LabelStyle" TargetType="Label"> <Setter Property="Width" Value="Auto"/> <Setter Property="Height" Value="28" /> <Setter Property="Foreground" Value="Black"/> <Setter Property="Margin" Value="8"/> </Style> Border Control <Style x:Key="BorderStyle" TargetType="Border"> <Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="4"/> <Setter Property="Width" Value="Auto"/> <Setter Property="Height" Value="Auto" /> <Setter Property="Margin" Value="0,8,0,0"/> <Setter Property="CornerRadius" Value="18"/> <Setter Property="BorderBrush"> <Setter.Value> <LinearGradientBrush EndPoint="1,0.5" StartPoint="0,0.5"> <GradientStop Color="CornflowerBlue" Offset="0" /> <GradientStop Color="White" Offset="1" /> </LinearGradientBrush> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> These provide good examples of setting individual properties to a default, such as; <Setter Property="Width" Value="Auto"/> <Setter Property="Height" Value="Auto" /> Also for settings a more complex property, such as with a LinearGradientBrush; <Setter Property="BorderBrush"> <Setter.Value> <LinearGradientBrush EndPoint="1,0.5" StartPoint="0,0.5"> <GradientStop Color="CornflowerBlue" Offset="0" /> <GradientStop Color="White" Offset="1" /> </LinearGradientBrush> </Setter.Value> </Setter> These property setters should be located between the opening and closing <Application.Resources></Application.Resources> tags. <Application x:Class="ScorecardAndDashboard.App" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" StartupUri="MainWindow.xaml"> <Application.Resources> </Application.Resources> </Application> Now in the pages, user controls, or whatever you are marking up with XAML, for the Style Property just set a StaticResource such as shown below. <!-- Border Control --> <Border Name="borderPollingFrequency" Style="{StaticResource BorderStyle}"> <!-- Label Control --> <Label Content="Trigger Name:" Style="{StaticResource LabelStyle}"></Label> <!-- Button Control --> <Button Content="Save Schedule" Name="buttonSaveSchedule" Style="{StaticResource ButtonStyle}" HorizontalAlignment="Right"/> That's it.  Simple as that.  There are other ways to setup resource files that are separate from the App.xaml, but the App.xaml file is always a good quick place to start.  As moving the styles to a specific resource file later is a mere copy and paste. Original post is available along with other technical ramblings.

  • Collision detection problem in XNA

    - by Fantasy
    I'm having two problems with my collision detection in XNA. There are two boxes, the red box represents a player and the blue box represents a wall. The first problem is when the player moves to the upper side or bottom side of the wall and collides with it, and then try to go to the left or right, the player will just jump in the opposite direction as seen in the video. However if I go to the right side or the left side of the wall and try to go up or down the player will smoothly go up or down without jumping. The second problem is that when I collide with the box and my key is still pressed down the blue box goes half way through red box and and goes back out and it keeps doing that until I stop pressing the keyboard. its not very clear on the video but the keeps going in and out really fast until I stop pressing the key. Here is a video example:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKLJsrPviYo and Here is my code Vector2 Position; Rectangle PlayerRectangle, BoxRectangle; float Speed = 0.25f; enum Direction { Up, Right, Down, Left }; Direction direction; protected override void Update(GameTime gameTime) { // Allows the game to exit if (GamePad.GetState(PlayerIndex.One).Buttons.Back == ButtonState.Pressed) this.Exit(); KeyboardState keyboardState = Keyboard.GetState(); if (keyboardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Up)) { Position.Y -= (float)(Speed * gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalMilliseconds); direction = Direction.Up; } if (keyboardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Down)) { Position.Y += (float)(Speed * gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalMilliseconds); direction = Direction.Down; } if (keyboardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Right)) { Position.X += (float)(Speed * gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalMilliseconds); direction = Direction.Right; } if (keyboardState.IsKeyDown(Keys.Left)) { Position.X -= (float)(Speed * gameTime.ElapsedGameTime.TotalMilliseconds); direction = Direction.Left; } if (PlayerRectangle.Intersects(BoxRectangle)) { if (direction == Direction.Right) Position.X = BoxRectangle.Left - PlayerRectangle.Width; else if (direction == Direction.Left) Position.X = BoxRectangle.Right; if (direction == Direction.Down) Position.Y = BoxRectangle.Top - PlayerRectangle.Height; else if (direction == Direction.Up) Position.Y = BoxRectangle.Bottom; } PlayerRectangle = new Rectangle((int)Position.X, (int)Position.Y, (int)32, (int)32); base.Update(gameTime); }

  • TreeViewItem - Use ControlTemplate and HierarchicalDataTemplate together

    - by CrownJ
    I'm using HierarchicalDataTemplate in my TreeView, and I wanted to also overwrite the default template for the TreeViewItem so that when an item is selected, it only highlights the text, not including the icon next to it. <TreeView.ItemTemplate> <HierarchicalDataTemplate ItemsSource="{Binding Children}"> <TreeViewItem Style="{StaticResource TreeViewItemStyle}" Header="{Binding </Setter> </Trigger> </Style.Triggers> </Style> </TreeView.Resources> I couldn't find a way to use both the HierarchicalDataTemplate and ControlTemplate together so I can specify the ItemsSource and also change parts of the control's behavior. When I do the above code, it won't select the treeviewitem at all.

  • Asp controls Id generation inside repeater

    - by toraan
    I define some controls inside repeater itemtemplate, the problem is with the Id that are generated automatically. This is my page: <asp:Repeater ID="rptThreads" runat="server" onitemcreated="rptThreads_ItemCreated"> <HeaderTemplate> <table cellpadding="0px" cellspacing="0"> </HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <tr style="height:50px"> <td> <asp:PlaceHolder ID="plcItemTitle" runat="server"> <asp:Panel id="titleContainer" runat="server" style="position:absolute;"> <asp:HyperLink ID="lnkTitle" runat="server" style="float:left;padding-right:10px;" Text='<%# Container.DataItem%>'/> <asp:Panel id="pnlEditButtons" runat="server" Visible="false" style="vertical-align:middle;z-index:100;display:none;float:left;" > <asp:ImageButton ID="imgbtn1" runat="server" ImageUrl="~/Images/misc/edit.png" /> <asp:ImageButton ID="imgbtn2" runat="server" ImageUrl="~/Images/misc/Rename.png" /> </asp:Panel> </asp:Panel> </asp:PlaceHolder> </td> </tr> </ItemTemplate> <FooterTemplate> </table> </FooterTemplate> </asp:Repeater> Now I will try to describe the problem: code-behind: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { int [] array = {1,2,3,4,5}; rptThreads.DataSource = array; rptThreads.DataBind(); } protected void rptThreads_ItemCreated(object sender, RepeaterItemEventArgs e) { if (e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.Item || e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.AlternatingItem) { Panel editButtonsPanel = e.Item.FindControl("pnlEditButtons") as Panel; editButtonsPanel.Visible = true; Panel containerPanel = e.Item.FindControl("titleContainer") as Panel; //Point of Interest!!!! containerPanel.Attributes.Add("onmouseover", "ShowEditButtons('" + editButtonsPanel.ClientID + "');"); } } If I run the page as is, the generated html will be the following (I show only the first 2 items): <table cellpadding="0px" cellspacing="0"> <tr style="height:50px"> <td> <div id="titleContainer" onmouseover="ShowEditButtons('pnlEditButtons');" style="position:absolute;"> <a id="lnkTitle" style="float:left;padding-right:10px;">1</a> <div id="pnlEditButtons" style="vertical-align:middle;z-index:100;display:none;float:left;"> <input type="image" name="imgbtn1" id="imgbtn1" src="Images/misc/edit.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> <input type="image" name="imgbtn2" id="imgbtn2" src="Images/misc/Rename.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> </div> </div> </td> </tr> <tr style="height:50px"> <td> <div id="titleContainer" onmouseover="ShowEditButtons('pnlEditButtons');" style="position:absolute;"> <a id="lnkTitle" style="float:left;padding-right:10px;">2</a> <div id="pnlEditButtons" style="vertical-align:middle;z-index:100;display:none;float:left;"> <input type="image" name="imgbtn1" id="imgbtn1" src="Images/misc/edit.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> <input type="image" name="imgbtn2" id="imgbtn2" src="Images/misc/Rename.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> </div> </div> </td> </tr> As you can see all divs get the SAME ID, THIS I DONT WANT!!! But If I omit this line form the ItemCreated event: containerPanel.Attributes.Add("onmouseover", "ShowEditButtons('" + editButtonsPanel.ClientID + "');"); The generated HTML will be the following: <table cellpadding="0px" cellspacing="0"> <tr style="height:50px"> <td> <div id="rptThreads_ctl01_titleContainer" style="position:absolute;"> <a id="rptThreads_ctl01_lnkTitle" style="float:left;padding-right:10px;">1</a> <div id="rptThreads_ctl01_pnlEditButtons" style="vertical-align:middle;z-index:100;display:none;float:left;"> <input type="image" name="rptThreads$ctl01$imgbtn1" id="rptThreads_ctl01_imgbtn1" src="Images/misc/edit.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> <input type="image" name="rptThreads$ctl01$imgbtn2" id="rptThreads_ctl01_imgbtn2" src="Images/misc/Rename.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> </div> </div> </td> </tr> <tr style="height:50px"> <td> <div id="rptThreads_ctl02_titleContainer" style="position:absolute;"> <a id="rptThreads_ctl02_lnkTitle" style="float:left;padding-right:10px;">2</a> <div id="rptThreads_ctl02_pnlEditButtons" style="vertical-align:middle;z-index:100;display:none;float:left;"> <input type="image" name="rptThreads$ctl02$imgbtn1" id="rptThreads_ctl02_imgbtn1" src="Images/misc/edit.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> <input type="image" name="rptThreads$ctl02$imgbtn2" id="rptThreads_ctl02_imgbtn2" src="Images/misc/Rename.png" style="border-width:0px;" /> </div> </div> </td> </tr> All divs get unique IDs, and this I do want My questions are: 1)why it happens? why this line of code messup the ids? 2)how can have the unique ID's and assign javascript in codebehind? I can add this on aspx (it will wotk and I will get unique ids): onmouseover='<%# "javascript:ShowEditButtons(\""+ Container.FindControl("pnlEditButtons").ClientID+ "\");" %>' But I must do it in codebehind because I need to set the javascript only if server validate some things.

  • JavaScript functions broke my page jumps?

    - by Mark
    Hi everybody, I'm trying to develop a personal website and running into some issues. At the top of my page I had a horizontal table that contained 6 different images (buttons) that linked to different sections of the page. I wanted to spice up the buttons with JavaScript and make the image of the button change onMouseOver and onMouseOut so I found a way to do so online with some JavaScript but the problem now is that the buttons no longer jump to the appropriate section of the page when using Google Chrome or Safari, but in IE 9 they still do work correctly... Here is my old code that worked properly: <html> ... <body> <center> <table border="1" style="color:#D80000;text-align:center"> <tr> <td> <a href="#about"><img src="images/aboutMe.png" alt="About Me"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#courses"><img src="images/courseList.png" alt="Courses"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#work"><img src="images/workHistory.png" alt="Work History"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#places"><img src="images/placesBeen.png" alt="Places I've Been"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#games"><img src="images/gamesPlay.png" alt="Games I Play"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#contact"><img src="images/contactMe.png" alt="Contact"></a> </td> </tr> </table> </center> ... </body> </html> Here is my new code that is now broken: <html> <head> ... <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- if (document.images) { <!-- Preload original Images --> var about_init= new Image(); about_init.src="images/aboutMe.png"; var courses_init= new Image(); courses_init.src="images/courseList.png"; var work_init= new Image(); work_init.src="images/workHistory.png"; var places_init= new Image(); places_init.src="images/placesBeen.png"; var games_init= new Image(); games_init.src="images/gamesPlay.png"; var contact_init= new Image(); contact_init.src="images/contactMe.png"; <!--Preload images for mouseover --> var about_new= new Image(); about_new.src="images/aboutAlt.png"; var courses_new= new Image(); courses_new.src="images/courseAlt.png"; var work_new= new Image(); work_new.src="images/workAlt.png"; var places_new= new Image(); places_new.src="images/placesAlt.png"; var games_new= new Image(); games_new.src="images/gamesAlt.png"; var contact_new= new Image(); contact_new.src="images/contactAlt.png"; } function change_it(the_name) { if (document.images) { document.images[the_name].src= eval(the_name+"_new.src"); } } function change_back(the_name) { if (document.images) { document.images[the_name].src= eval(the_name+"_init.src"); } } //--> </script> </head> <body> ... <center> <table border="1" style="color:#D80000;text-align:center"> <tr> <td> <a href="#about" onMouseOver="change_it('about')" onMouseOut="change_back('about')"><img src="images/aboutMe.png" name="about" id="about" border="0" alt="About Me"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#courses" onMouseOver="change_it('courses')" onMouseOut="change_back('courses')"><img src="images/courseList.png" name="courses" id="courses" border="0" alt="Courses"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#work" onMouseOver="change_it('work')" onMouseOut="change_back('work')"><img src="images/workHistory.png" name="work" id="work" border="0" alt="Work History"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#places" onMouseOver="change_it('places')" onMouseOut="change_back('places')"><img src="images/placesBeen.png" name="places" id="places" border="0" alt="Places I've Been"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#games" onMouseOver="change_it('games')" onMouseOut="change_back('games')"><img src="images/gamesPlay.png" name="games" id="games" border="0" alt="Games I Play"></a> </td> <td> <a href="#contact" onMouseOver="change_it('contact')" onMouseOut="change_back('contact')"><img src="images/contactMe.png" name="contact" id="contact" border="0" alt="Contact"></a> </td> </tr> </table> </center> ... </body> </html> The images properly switch when the mouse is moved over/off them, but the jump to the corresponding page sections seems to be broken, it seems like they're all jumping to the #about section now. Once again, the weirder thing is that this is only the case when I'm using Google Chrome on my laptop running Windows 7 or Safari using my iPhone 4 but when I use the new Internet Explorer 9 on my laptop running Windows 7 all the buttons still link correctly. Any idea what's breaking the links?

  • updating/refereshing dojo datagrid with new store value on combobox value changes

    - by Raj
    hey all, I have a combo box and a datagrid in my page. when the user changes the combo box value i have to update the grid with children details of newly selected parent. How can I achieve this using Dojo combo box and datagrid. the following code snippet not working for me. when I use setStore method on the grid with new json data. <div dojoType="dojo.data.ItemFileReadStore" jsId="store" url="/child/index/"></div> // grid store <div dojoType="dojo.data.ItemFileReadStore" jsId="parentStore" url="/parent/index/"></div> // combo box store //combo box <input dojoType="dijit.form.ComboBox" value="Select" width="auto" store="parentStore" searchAttr="name" name="parent" id="parent" onchange="displayChildren()"> //MY GRID <table dojoType="dojox.grid.DataGrid" jsId="grid" store="store" id="display_grid" query="{ child_id: '*' }" rowsPerPage="2" clientSort="true" singleClickEdit="false" style="width: 90%; height: 400px;" rowSelector="20px" selectionMode="multiple"> <thead> <tr> <th field="child_id" name="ID" width="auto" editable="false" hidden="true">Text</th> <th field="parent_id" name="Parent" width="auto" editable="false" hidden="true">Text</th> <th field="child_name" name="child" width="300px" editable="false">Text</th> <th field="created" name="Created Date" width="200px" editable="false" cellType='dojox.grid.cells.DateTextBox' datePattern='dd-MMM-yyyy'></th> <th field="last_updated" name="Updated Date" width="200px" editable="false" cellType='dojox.grid.cells.DateTextBox' datePattern='dd-MMM-yyyy'></th> <th field="child_id" name="Edit/Update" formatter="fmtEdit"></th> </tr> </thead> </table> //onchange method of parent combo box in which i am trying to reload the grid with new data from the server. function displayChildren() { var selected = dijit.byId("parent").attr("value"); var grid = dojo.byId('display_grid'); var Url = "/childsku/index/parent/" + selected; grid.setStore(new dojo.data.ItemFileReadStore({ url: Url })); } But its not updating my grid with new contents. I don know how to refresh the grid every time users changes the combo box value. Could anyone help me to solve this issue... I would be glad if I get the solution for both ItemFileReadStore and ItemFileWrireStore. Thanks Raj..

  • ASP.Net Web Farm Monitoring

    - by cisellis
    I am looking for suggestions on doing some simple monitoring of an ASP.Net web farm as close to real-time as possible. The objectives of this question are to: Identify the best way to monitor several Windows Server production boxes during short (minutes long) period of ridiculous load Receive near-real-time feedback on a few key metrics about each box. These are simple metrics available via WMI such as CPU, Memory and Disk Paging. I am defining my time constraints as soon as possible with 120 seconds delayed being the absolute upper limit. Monitor whether any given box is up (with "up" being defined as responding web requests in a reasonable amount of time) Here are more details, things I've tried, etc. I am not interested in logging. We have logging solutions in place. I have looked at solutions such as ELMAH which don't provide much in the way of hardware monitoring and are not visible across an entire web farm. ASP.Net Health Monitoring is too broad, focuses too much on logging and is not acceptable for deep analysis. We are on Amazon Web Services and we have looked into CloudWatch. It looks great but messages in the forum indicate that the metrics are often a few minutes behind, with one thread citing 2 minutes as the absolute soonest you could expect to receive the feedback. This would be good to have for later analysis but does not help us real-time Stuff like JetBrains profiler is good for testing but again, not helpful during real-time monitoring. The closest out-of-box solution I've seen is Nagios which is free and appears to measure key indicators on any kind of box, including Windows. However, it appears to require a Linux box to run itself on and a good deal of manual configuration. I'd prefer to not spend my time mining config files and then be up a creek when it fails in production since Linux is not my main (or even secondary) environment. Are there any out-of-box solutions that I am missing? Obviously a windows-based solution that is easy to setup is ideal. I don't require many bells and whistles. In the absence of an out-of-box solution, it seems easy for me to write something simple to handle what I need. I've been thinking a simple client-server setup where the server requests a few WMI metrics from each client over http and sticks them in a database. We could then monitor the metrics via a query or a dashboard or something. If the client doesn't respond, it's effectively down. Any problems with this, best practices, or other ideas? Thanks for any help/feedback.

  • CSS - changing the font color for a from select option in firefox

    - by Mick
    I'm building a website for my church, and I'm teaching myself all about web design along the way. http://www.wilmingtonchurchofgod.org/contact_us.html is the link where you can see my issue. If you look at that page in firefox, and you click the select part of the form (next to, "Who would you like to contact?") you will see that when you hover over a choice, the font is white. I have tried various things to fix this, but can't find a solution. This seems to be specific to Firefox. Here is the relevant CSS. input, textarea, select, option{ padding: 6px; border: solid 1px #E5E5E5; outline: 0; font: normal 13px/100% Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif; width: 200px; background: #FFFFFF url(images/from-grad.jpg) left top repeat-x; background: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left 25, from(#FFFFFF), color-stop(4%, #EEEEEE), to(#FFFFFF)); background: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #FFFFFF, #EEEEEE 1px, #FFFFFF 25px); box-shadow: rgba(0,0,0, 0.15) 0px 0px 8px; -moz-box-shadow: rgba(0,0,0, 0.15) 0px 0px 8px; -webkit-box-shadow: rgba(0,0,0, 0.15) 0px 0px 8px; } option{ padding:0px; } textarea { width: 400px; max-width: 400px; height: 150px; line-height: 150%; } input:hover, textarea:hover, input:focus, textarea:focus{ border-color: #C9C9C9; -webkit-box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15) 0px 0px 8px; -moz-box-shadow: rgba(0,0,0, 0.15) 0px 0px 8px; } option:hover, option:focus, select:hover, select:focus { color: black; border-color: #C9C9C9; -webkit-box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15) 0px 0px 8px; -moz-box-shadow: rgba(0,0,0, 0.15) 0px 0px 8px; } Another side note is that I can't get any background gradient at all to show up on Google Chome (yet it does on Safari and they are supposed to use the same kit?) Any help with these two things would be greatly appreciated.

  • nivo slider and drop down menu doesnt work in IE

    - by venom
    Does anyone has any idea why drop down menu in IE disappear under nivo slider? tried to play with z-index, didn't help, i also know that drop down menus dissappear under flash content, but this is not the case(wmode=transparent) as far as i know the nivo slider uses just jquery, no flash. here is the html: <table> <tr height="50"><td colspan="2" align="right" class="bottom_menu"> <ul id="nav" class="dropdown dropdown-horizontal" > <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.logout" class="dir" style="border:0 !important;" >Çikis</a></li> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.list_basket" class="dir">Sepetim</a></li> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.me" class="dir">Sirketim</a> <ul> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.list_opportunities">Firsatlar</a></li> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.form_add_partner">Sirkete Kullanici Ekle</a></li> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.form_upd_my_company">Kullanici Yönetimi</a></li> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.list_analyses">Analizler</a></li> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.list_extre">Hesap Ekstresi</a></li> <li><a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.popup_add_online_pos" target="_blank">Sanal Pos</a></li> </ul> </li> </ul> </td></tr> </table> <div id="banner"> <img src="/documents/templates/projedepo/l_top.gif" style="z-index:1;position:absolute; left:0; top:0;" width="24px" height="24px" border="0" /> <img src="/documents/templates/projedepo/r_top.gif" style="z-index:1;position:absolute; right:0; top:0;" width="24px" height="24px" border="0" /> <img src="/documents/templates/projedepo/l_bottom.gif" style="z-index:1;position:absolute; left:0; bottom:0;" width="24px" height="24px" border="0" /> <img src="/documents/templates/projedepo/r_bottom.gif" style="z-index:1;position:absolute; right:0; bottom:0;" width="24px" height="24px" border="0" /> <div class="banner_img"> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/nivo-slider.css" type="text/css" media="screen" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen" /> <div id="slider" class="nivoSlider"> <img title="#1" src="/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/canon.jpg" alt="" /> <img title="#2" src="/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/indigovision.jpg" alt="" /> </div> <div id="1" class="nivo-html-caption"> <a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.detail_product&product_id=612&stock_id=612"><img src="/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/daha_fazlasi.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div> <div id="2" class="nivo-html-caption"> <a href="/index.cfm?fuseaction=objects2.detail_product&product_id=630&stock_id=630"><img src="/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/daha_fazlasi.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div> <script type="text/javascript" src="/JS/jquery.nivo.slider.pack.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(window).load(function() { $('#slider').nivoSlider({ effect:'random', //Specify sets like: 'fold,fade,sliceDown' slices:15, animSpeed:1000, //Slide transition speed pauseTime:10000, startSlide:0, //Set starting Slide (0 index) directionNav:true, //Next & Prev directionNavHide:true, //Only show on hover controlNav:true, //1,2,3... controlNavThumbs:false, //Use thumbnails for Control Nav controlNavThumbsFromRel:false, //Use image rel for thumbs controlNavThumbsSearch: '.jpg', //Replace this with... controlNavThumbsReplace: '_thumb.jpg', //...this in thumb Image src keyboardNav:true, //Use left & right arrows pauseOnHover:true, //Stop animation while hovering manualAdvance:false, //Force manual transitions captionOpacity:1.0, //Universal caption opacity beforeChange: function(){}, afterChange: function(){}, slideshowEnd: function(){}, //Triggers after all slides have been shown lastSlide: function(){}, //Triggers when last slide is shown afterLoad: function(){} //Triggers when slider has loaded }); }); </script> </div> </div> Here is css for dropdown menu: http://www.micae.com/documents/templates/projedepo/default.css http://www.micae.com/documents/templates/projedepo/default.advanced.css http://www.micae.com/documents/templates/projedepo/dropdown.css and for nivo slider: http://www.micae.com/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/style.css http://www.micae.com/documents/templates/projedepo/banner/nivo-slider.css and for banner divs: #banner { position:relative; width:980px; height:435px; background:#fff; margin-bottom:20px; margin-top:-1px; color:#000; z-index:60; } .banner_img { padding:8px;position:absolute;z-index:2; } and the javascript by default, jquery and nivo slider http://www.micae.com/JS/jquery.nivo.slider.pack.js

  • Need help getting DIV inside DIV to stretch to width of contents in Firefox

    - by bj.
    I am using a layout similar to the one from Dynamic Drive here: http://www.dynamicdrive.com/style/layouts/item/css-right-frame-layout/ The main content area (white) has overflow set to auto. I have given the innerTube inside this main content area a border. However if the contents within this innerTube are greater than the width of the main content area, a horizontal scroll bar will appear as expected, but in Firefox these contents will 'overlap' the border and go off screen (can be retrieved by scrolling horizontally). In other words, the right hand border remains in place, and the content just goes over the op of it, and disappears behind the right hand column. In IE it behaves exactly as I want - the content pushes the border off screen to be visible only once you scroll over there. I guess the easiest thing is to paste the source code here. If you copy it into a blank file you'll see what I mean. I've just used one really long word to replicate what happens if a wide image is there instead. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out. <!--Force IE6 into quirks mode with this comment tag--> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" /> <style type="text/css"> body{ margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 0; overflow: hidden; height: 100%; max-height: 100%; } #framecontent{ position: absolute; top: 0; bottom: 0; right: 0; width: 200px; /*Width of frame div*/ height: 100%; overflow: hidden; /*Disable scrollbars.   Using R to Analyze G1GC Log Files   Using R to Analyze G1GC Log Files Introduction Working in Oracle Platform Integration gives an engineer opportunities to work on a wide array of technologies. My team’s goal is to make Oracle applications run best on the Solaris/SPARC platform. When looking for bottlenecks in a modern applications, one needs to be aware of not only how the CPUs and operating system are executing, but also network, storage, and in some cases, the Java Virtual Machine. I was recently presented with about 1.5 GB of Java Garbage First Garbage Collector log file data. If you’re not familiar with the subject, you might want to review Garbage First Garbage Collector Tuning by Monica Beckwith. The customer had been running Java HotSpot 1.6.0_31 to host a web application server. I was told that the Solaris/SPARC server was running a Java process launched using a commmand line that included the following flags: -d64 -Xms9g -Xmx9g -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200 -XX:InitiatingHeapOccupancyPercent=80 -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:+PrintGC -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC -XX:+PrintGCDateStamps -XX:+PrintFlagsFinal -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions -XX:ParallelGCThreads=8 Several sources on the internet indicate that if I were to print out the 1.5 GB of log files, it would require enough paper to fill the bed of a pick up truck. Of course, it would be fruitless to try to scan the log files by hand. Tools will be required to summarize the contents of the log files. Others have encountered large Java garbage collection log files. There are existing tools to analyze the log files: IBM’s GC toolkit The chewiebug GCViewer gchisto HPjmeter Instead of using one of the other tools listed, I decide to parse the log files with standard Unix tools, and analyze the data with R. Data Cleansing The log files arrived in two different formats. I guess that the difference is that one set of log files was generated using a more verbose option, maybe -XX:+PrintHeapAtGC, and the other set of log files was generated without that option. Format 1 In some of the log files, the log files with the less verbose format, a single trace, i.e. the report of a singe garbage collection event, looks like this: {Heap before GC invocations=12280 (full 61): garbage-first heap total 9437184K, used 7499918K [0xfffffffd00000000, 0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff40000000) region size 4096K, 1 young (4096K), 0 survivors (0K) compacting perm gen total 262144K, used 144077K [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff50000000, 0xffffffff50000000) the space 262144K, 54% used [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff48cb3758, 0xffffffff48cb3800, 0xffffffff50000000) No shared spaces configured. 2014-05-14T07:24:00.988-0700: 60586.353: [GC pause (young) 7324M->7320M(9216M), 0.1567265 secs] Heap after GC invocations=12281 (full 61): garbage-first heap total 9437184K, used 7496533K [0xfffffffd00000000, 0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff40000000) region size 4096K, 0 young (0K), 0 survivors (0K) compacting perm gen total 262144K, used 144077K [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff50000000, 0xffffffff50000000) the space 262144K, 54% used [0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff48cb3758, 0xffffffff48cb3800, 0xffffffff50000000) No shared spaces configured. } A simple grep can be used to extract a summary: $ grep "\[ GC pause (young" g1gc.log 2014-05-13T13:24:35.091-0700: 3.109: [GC pause (young) 20M->5029K(9216M), 0.0146328 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:35.440-0700: 3.459: [GC pause (young) 9125K->6077K(9216M), 0.0086723 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:37.581-0700: 5.599: [GC pause (young) 25M->8470K(9216M), 0.0203820 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:42.686-0700: 10.704: [GC pause (young) 44M->15M(9216M), 0.0288848 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:48.941-0700: 16.958: [GC pause (young) 51M->20M(9216M), 0.0491244 secs] 2014-05-13T13:24:56.049-0700: 24.066: [GC pause (young) 92M->26M(9216M), 0.0525368 secs] 2014-05-13T13:25:34.368-0700: 62.383: [GC pause (young) 602M->68M(9216M), 0.1721173 secs] But that format wasn't easily read into R, so I needed to be a bit more tricky. I used the following Unix command to create a summary file that was easy for R to read. $ echo "SecondsSinceLaunch BeforeSize AfterSize TotalSize RealTime" $ grep "\[GC pause (young" g1gc.log | grep -v mark | sed -e 's/[A-SU-z\(\),]/ /g' -e 's/->/ /' -e 's/: / /g' | more SecondsSinceLaunch BeforeSize AfterSize TotalSize RealTime 2014-05-13T13:24:35.091-0700 3.109 20 5029 9216 0.0146328 2014-05-13T13:24:35.440-0700 3.459 9125 6077 9216 0.0086723 2014-05-13T13:24:37.581-0700 5.599 25 8470 9216 0.0203820 2014-05-13T13:24:42.686-0700 10.704 44 15 9216 0.0288848 2014-05-13T13:24:48.941-0700 16.958 51 20 9216 0.0491244 2014-05-13T13:24:56.049-0700 24.066 92 26 9216 0.0525368 2014-05-13T13:25:34.368-0700 62.383 602 68 9216 0.1721173 Format 2 In some of the log files, the log files with the more verbose format, a single trace, i.e. the report of a singe garbage collection event, was more complicated than Format 1. Here is a text file with an example of a single G1GC trace in the second format. As you can see, it is quite complicated. It is nice that there is so much information available, but the level of detail can be overwhelming. I wrote this awk script (download) to summarize each trace on a single line. #!/usr/bin/env awk -f BEGIN { printf("SecondsSinceLaunch IncrementalCount FullCount UserTime SysTime RealTime BeforeSize AfterSize TotalSize\n") } ###################### # Save count data from lines that are at the start of each G1GC trace. # Each trace starts out like this: # {Heap before GC invocations=14 (full 0): # garbage-first heap total 9437184K, used 325496K [0xfffffffd00000000, 0xffffffff40000000, 0xffffffff40000000) ###################### /{Heap.*full/{ gsub ( "\\)" , "" ); nf=split($0,a,"="); split(a[2],b," "); getline; if ( match($0, "first") ) { G1GC=1; IncrementalCount=b[1]; FullCount=substr( b[3], 1, length(b[3])-1 ); } else { G1GC=0; } } ###################### # Pull out time stamps that are in lines with this format: # 2014-05-12T14:02:06.025-0700: 94.312: [GC pause (young), 0.08870154 secs] ###################### /GC pause/ { DateTime=$1; SecondsSinceLaunch=substr($2, 1, length($2)-1); } ###################### # Heap sizes are in lines that look like this: # [ 4842M->4838M(9216M)] ###################### /\[ .*]$/ { gsub ( "\\[" , "" ); gsub ( "\ \]" , "" ); gsub ( "->" , " " ); gsub ( "\\( " , " " ); gsub ( "\ \)" , " " ); split($0,a," "); if ( split(a[1],b,"M") > 1 ) {BeforeSize=b[1]*1024;} if ( split(a[1],b,"K") > 1 ) {BeforeSize=b[1];} if ( split(a[2],b,"M") > 1 ) {AfterSize=b[1]*1024;} if ( split(a[2],b,"K") > 1 ) {AfterSize=b[1];} if ( split(a[3],b,"M") > 1 ) {TotalSize=b[1]*1024;} if ( split(a[3],b,"K") > 1 ) {TotalSize=b[1];} } ###################### # Emit an output line when you find input that looks like this: # [Times: user=1.41 sys=0.08, real=0.24 secs] ###################### /\[Times/ { if (G1GC==1) { gsub ( "," , "" ); split($2,a,"="); UserTime=a[2]; split($3,a,"="); SysTime=a[2]; split($4,a,"="); RealTime=a[2]; print DateTime,SecondsSinceLaunch,IncrementalCount,FullCount,UserTime,SysTime,RealTime,BeforeSize,AfterSize,TotalSize; G1GC=0; } } The resulting summary is about 25X smaller that the original file, but still difficult for a human to digest. Is that too much? To find the percentage of time spent in garbage collection, divide the number above by total_elapsed_time*CPU_count. In this case, there are a lot of CPU’s and it turns out the the overall amount of CPU time spent in garbage collection isn’t a problem when viewed in isolation. When calculating rates, i.e. events per unit time, you need to ask yourself if the rate is homogenous across the time period in the log file. Does the log file include spikes of high activity that should be separately analyzed? Averaging in data from nights and weekends with data from business hours may alias problems. If you have a reason to suspect that the garbage collection rates include peaks and valleys that need independent analysis, see the “Time Series” section, below. Q: How much garbage is collected on each pass? The amount of heap space that is recovered per GC pass is surprisingly low: At least one collection didn’t recover any data. (“Min.=0”) 25% of the passes recovered 3MB or less. (“1st Qu.=3072”) Half of the GC passes recovered 4MB or less. (“Median=4096”) The average amount recovered was 56MB. (“Mean=56390”) 75% of the passes recovered 36MB or less. (“3rd Qu.=36860”) At least one pass recovered 2GB. I’m including this image because it is an example of idle periods followed by busy periods. It would be uninteresting to average the rate of garbage collection over the entire log file period. More interesting would be the rate of garbage collect in the two busy periods. Are they the same or different? Your production data may be similar, for example, bursts when employees return from lunch and idle times on weekend evenings, etc. Once the data is in an R Time Series, you can analyze isolated time windows. Clipping the Time Series data Flashing back to our test case… Viewing the data as a time series is interesting. You can see that the work intensive time period is between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM. Lets clip the data to the interesting period:     par(mfrow=c(2,1)) plot(g1gc.z$UserTime, type="h", main="User Time per GC\nTime: Complete Log File", xlab="Time of Day", ylab="CPU Seconds per GC", col="#1b9e77") clipped.g1gc.z=window(g1gc.z, start=as.POSIXct("2014-05-12 21:00:00"), end=as.POSIXct("2014-05-13 03:00:00")) plot(clipped.g1gc.z$UserTime, type="h", main="User Time per GC\nTime: Limited to Benchmark Execution", xlab="Time of Day", ylab="CPU Seconds per GC", col="#1b9e77") box(which = "outer", lty = "solid") Cumulative Incremental and Full GC count Here is the cumulative incremental and full GC count. When the line is very steep, it indicates that the GCs are repeating very quickly. Notice that the scale on the Y axis is different for full vs. incremental. plot(clipped.g1gc.z[,c(2:3)], main="Cumulative Incremental and Full GC count", xlab="Time of Day", col="#1b9e77") GC Analysis of Benchmark Execution using Time Series data In the following series of 3 graphs: The “After Size” show the amount of heap space in use after each garbage collection. Many Java objects are still referenced, i.e. alive, during each garbage collection. This may indicate that the application has a memory leak, or may indicate that the application has a very large memory footprint. Typically, an application's memory footprint plateau's in the early stage of execution. One would expect this graph to have a flat top. The steep decline in the heap space may indicate that the application crashed after 2:00. The second graph shows that the outliers in real execution time, discussed above, occur near 2:00. when the Java heap seems to be quite full. The third graph shows that Full GCs are infrequent during the first few hours of execution. The rate of Full GC's, (the slope of the cummulative Full GC line), changes near midnight.   plot(clipped.g1gc.z[,c("AfterSize","RealTime","FullCount")], xlab="Time of Day", col=c("#1b9e77","red","#1b9e77")) GC Analysis of heap recovered Each GC trace includes the amount of heap space in use before and after the individual GC event. During garbage coolection, unreferenced objects are identified, the space holding the unreferenced objects is freed, and thus, the difference in before and after usage indicates how much space has been freed. The following box plot and bar chart both demonstrate the same point - the amount of heap space freed per garbage colloection is surprisingly low. par(mfrow=c(2,1)) boxplot(as.vector(clipped.g1gc.z$Delta), main="Amount of Heap Recovered per GC Pass", xlab="Size in KB", horizontal = TRUE, col="red") hist(as.vector(clipped.g1gc.z$Delta), main="Amount of Heap Recovered per GC Pass", xlab="Size in KB", breaks=100, col="red") box(which = "outer", lty = "solid") This graph is the most interesting. The dark blue area shows how much heap is occupied by referenced Java objects. This represents memory that holds live data. The red fringe at the top shows how much data was recovered after each garbage collection. barplot(clipped.g1gc.z[,c("AfterSize","Delta")], col=c("#7570b3","#e7298a"), xlab="Time of Day", border=NA) legend("topleft", c("Live Objects","Heap Recovered on GC"), fill=c("#7570b3","#e7298a")) box(which = "outer", lty = "solid") When I discuss the data in the log files with the customer, I will ask for an explaination for the large amount of referenced data resident in the Java heap. There are two are posibilities: There is a memory leak and the amount of space required to hold referenced objects will continue to grow, limited only by the maximum heap size. After the maximum heap size is reached, the JVM will throw an “Out of Memory” exception every time that the application tries to allocate a new object. If this is the case, the aplication needs to be debugged to identify why old objects are referenced when they are no longer needed. The application has a legitimate requirement to keep a large amount of data in memory. The customer may want to further increase the maximum heap size. Another possible solution would be to partition the application across multiple cluster nodes, where each node has responsibility for managing a unique subset of the data. Conclusion In conclusion, R is a very powerful tool for the analysis of Java garbage collection log files. The primary difficulty is data cleansing so that information can be read into an R data frame. Once the data has been read into R, a rich set of tools may be used for thorough evaluation.

  • Simple image editor to select area of image as wallpaper

    - by Kevin
    I've spent way to many hours looking for software to do the following simple task, so now I'll ask. I need software that will open an image and put a 'crop box' on it. You can set the 'crop box' to standard screen resolutions (1024x768) or define a custom one. You can move the 'crop box' around on the image to select the area you want. You can re-size the 'crop box' (selecting a corner and dragging w/mouse) and it maintains the correct aspect ratio. You can save the area in the 'crop box' to use as the Windows background. (The software doesn't need to set it as the background, I can do that myself in Windows XP.) The free software sites (CNET.com, etc.) have lots of image editing software that do things much more complicated than this simple task. I've spent too many hours downloading them to see if they will do this particular task. The ones I've tried would require manual trial and error to get the part of an image that I want saved as an image, with the correct aspect ratio so Windows doesn't screw with it (stretch, tile, crop) when I select it as the wallpaper.

  • Replicate / SYNC / Copy thousands of files

    - by rihatum
    Windows 32BIT Box (Server OS) 4GB RAM a 800GB LUN Mapped to the above box as a local drive Around 700GB of text files (Yes text files and a few thousand word documents) nested in thousands of directories. I need to move this to a new storage and map another server to it. What would be the best way to go about it ? What I did was mapped the existing LUN to our new box and mapped a LUN from the New storage to the new box too, and tried copying (windows copy) but that wasn't good / fast enough considering the downtime. I am now looking for either a script which will do this or a utility (prefer opensource / free) to move this size of data at a good speed. 2 x 1GB Nics teamed ether channel 2GBPs Any suggestions or pointers would be off great help Thanks !

  • Apache times out after 2 minutes, when Apache TimeOut is 1200

    - by Robert Gowland
    We have a set up where the browser makes an http request to Box A which in turn makes an http request to Box B. What we're encountering is that Box A waits for Box B to respond for two minutes then the users sees: The page cannot be displayed Explanation: There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed. Try the following: * Refresh page: Search for the page again by clicking the Refresh button. The timeout may have occurred due to Internet congestion. * Check spelling: Check that you typed the Web page address correctly. The address may have been mistyped. * Access from a link: If there is a link to the page you are looking for, try accessing the page from that link. Technical Information (for support personnel) * Error Code: 404 Not Found. The requested item could not be located. (12028) Watching the logs on Box B we see that it takes 5 minutes to do the work requested. The problem is that the apache time outs on both boxes are set 1200 (20m), not 120 (2m). Any ideas where to look?

I have an A/V setup at home that has something like the following: Five Components (actually a few more, like a CD player, but they don't really relate to this question): Older Pioneer Receiver Digital Set Top Box Sony BluRay Player Samsung Plasma TV Speakers The reason for the receiver is so that all the sound can go through the speakers, rather than some going to the TV speakers and some to the external speakers. They are connected as follows: Digital Set Top Box connects via component video to Samsung TV directly via Component 2 (audio goes to Older Pioneer Receiver). Sony BluRay player is connected via HDMI 1 to TV, but audio goes to the receiver. Now, the problem I'm having is that when I have the digital set top box connected, there are times when the Netflix or Hulu streams I watch through the Sony BluRay player (it's connected to a router for internet access) will lose video. What I mean by this is that the sound of the episode will keep playing, but the screen will go black. If I jiggle the component cables, it will often come back. If I disconnect the component cables, it will always come back. I've noticed that one of the connections (the red component cable) doesn't like to sit very well in the component socket in the back of the digital set top box. It seems like there is a bad connection here, but it doesn't seem like this should be affecting the HDMI input at all. What I've noticed, though, is that when I disconnect the digital set top box completely (i.e. remove the component cable from the back of the TV), the problem seems to resolve itself. I'm not talking about actually removing the cable physically, because I thought perhaps the cables were mashing against one another, and possibly jiggling each other loose. To correct this possible problem, I took the component cable completely out of the cable ties it was in in the back of my entertainment center, as well as pulled the digital set top box out from the entertainment center altogether. It's now connected directly to the TV, without any other cables touching it to cause some kind of weird interference or just physical pulling on the cable. Same problem. If, however, I disconnect the component cable and just leave it sitting behind the TV, then the problem goes away. So, my question is this - what could be causing this? Is it a case where it's an improperly shielded component cable that's causing interference with the HDMI input, or something that's wrong with the TV? It's an intermittent problem, so it's difficult to track down. The TV isn't that old, so it's probably still under warranty. I'm just wondering if there is something else I can do that might reduce this problem without having to haul a massive television set out of my house to get repaired/replaced.

  • Gre tunnel Linux Cisco

    - by mezgani
    I've created a GRE tunnel between LAN A and LAN B. LAN A is behind a router, and LAN B is behind a Linux box and this box has a pppoe interface. When i do tcpdump on Linux box i see that the traffic is routerd to Linux box (tunnel end), so my need is routing the tunnel traffic to internet. I've added these rules to my iptables script, and i stay unable to connect to internet from LAN A Permitting Linux to act as router (necessary to forward packets) echo "1" /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward iptables -A INPUT -p 47 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o gre0 -j MASEQUARADE What i've forgot to set in this case?

  • Apache times out after 2 minutes, when Apache TimeOut is 120
