• Book recommendation/advice for a future CTO? [closed]

  I'm the current lead developer for a small start-up. I spend the majority of my time coding, while the remainder is split between recruiting more programmers and managing the one I do work with. We just hired two more developers and are waiting to hear back from a third. I have about a month to prepare before they start. Any good book recommendations on developing my leadership skills, especially tech-related? Or advice from those who have been in this situation? Note: I'm less than a year out of college. • Software patents [closed]

  not exactly sure where I should post this but I have a question about filing for software patents. If I have an idea for a UI feature, how do I go about patenting that feature. I don't have any code written and I'm afraid my coding skills aren't up to snuff in order to code the thing I imagined but aside from that, can anyone give me any general guidance and info? I've gone through the CIPO site (Canada's patent office) but haven't come away with enough information on what I'm trying to patent but what I have understood is that I have to very thorough in describing what I'm trying to patent and showing that it could work. If anyone has gone through the process of patenting software, can you tell me about your experience? I would like to hear about US and Canadian experiences Thank you!

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. It just seems so difficult for me right now and I need to read to become smarter. • Programming a trading strategy

  Excuse me if I'm not descriptive enough, as I do not have much of a background when it comes to these things: How would I go about coding a primitive trading strategy and link it to some sort of artificial trading environment? Where do I start, and what are some other essential questions I should be asking? I am interested more in doing this because it interests me than making returns. Ideally it utilizes random/historical market data and doesn't actually execute any real trades. • Ready to Open source the software, but want to make some money out of it.

  I'm an UG Student and an Entrepreneur. I have started a small company with which I'm trying to provide solutions, to various companies in my city, through my software. I put in 30-40 hours of coding and development. I've been a huge fan of Open Source projects and I've also built by software on python. But now when it comes to selling my software to my customers, I expect money. (Am I being a Hypocrite?) Is there any OSS license under which I can make money and also make my source open? Please suggest. Or any other way to make money with my softwares? (I guess I deserve some credit. If not the code, atleast the ideas? :D )

• How to choose between using a Domain Event, or letting the application layer orchestrate everything

  I'm setting my first steps into domain driven design, bought the blue book and all, and I find myself seeing three ways to implement a certain solution. For the record: I'm not using CQRS or Event Sourcing. Let's say a user request comes into the application service layer. The business logic for that request is (for whatever reason) separated into a method on an entity, and a method on a domain service. How should I go about calling those methods? The options I have gathered so far are: Let the application service call both methods Use method injection/double dispatch to inject the domain service into the entity, letting the entity do it's thing and then let it call the method of the domain service (or the other way around, letting the domain service call the method on the entity) Raise a domain event in the entity method, a handler of which calls the domain service. (The kind of domain events I'm talking about are: http://www.udidahan.com/2009/06/14/domain-events-salvation/) I think these are all viable, but I'm unable to choose between them. I've been thinking about this a long time and I've come to a point where I no longer see the semantic differences between the three. Do you know of some guidelines when to use what?

• How to layer if statements when order of logic is irrelevant?

  Basically I have a series of logic in my website that can lead to 5 total outcomes. Basically two different if tests and then a catch all else statement. For example: if cond1: if mod1: #do things elif mod2: #do things elif cond2: if mod1: #do things elif mod2 #do things else: #do things I was thinking about rewriting it like this: if cond1 and mod1: #do things elif cond1 and mod2: #do things elif cond2 and mod1: #do things elif cond2 and mod2: #do things else: #do things Is there any real difference in these two coding options/a better choice for this kind of logic testing?

Now from my understanding if this was all done in hard coding I'd have to go into the code just to add stuff to it. I've looked at things like drupal and I get how those work, but I how would I be able to add this to my site? The same kind of concept? Also, one more thing, what does inc operating php into a website offer? like better looks or general preformence? I don't understand this. Excuse my grammar/spelling. • Duplicate pages indexed in Google

  I did a small coding mistake and Google indexed my site incorrectly. This is the correct form: https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/TENGA-CUP-DOUBLE-HOLE But Google indexed my site like this: https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx First I fixed the problem and made a site map with only the correct link in it. Now I checked webmaster tools and I see this: Total indexed 513 Not selected 544 Blocked by robots 0 So I think this can be caused by double indexes, and it looks like the pages not selected makes the correct pages not indexed. I want to know how to fix the "https://www.foo.com/urunler/171/cart.aspx" links. Should I fix in code or should I connect to Google to re-index my site? If I should redirect wrong/duplicate links to correct ones, how should that be done?

• Motivation for service layer (instead of just copying dlls)?

  I'm creating an application which has 2 different UIs so I'm making it with a service layer which I understood is appropriate for such case. However I found myself just creating web methods for every single method I have in the BL layer, so the services basically built from methods that looks like this: return customers_bl.Get_Customer_Prices(customer_id); I understood that a main point of the service layer is to prevent duplication of code so I asked myself - well, why not just import the BL.dll (and the DAL.dll) to the other UI, and whenever making a change re-copy the dll files, it might not be so 'neat', but is the all purpose of the service layer to prevent this? {I know something is wrong in my approach, I'm probably missing the importance of service layer, I'd like to get more motivation to create another layer, especially because as it is I found that many of my BL functions ALREADY looks like: return customers_dal.Get_Customer_Prices(cust_id) which led me to ask: was it really necessary to create the BL just because on several functions I actually have LOGIC inside the BL?} so I'm looking for more motivation to creating ONE MORE layer, I'm sure it's not just to make it more convenient that I won't have to re-copy the dlls on changes? Am I grasping it wrong? Any simple guidelines on how to design service layer (corresponding to all the BL layer functions or not? any simple example?) any enlightenment on the subject?

• Is JScript dying? If so, where should I go? [closed]

  I recently poked around Google for a little bit, looking for information about coding JScript. It's very sparse, which surprised me -- it took a link to a link to find Microsoft's own reference, which appears to omit most if not all references to console-based scripting that extends past Javascript. I'm working with the console here, not a webpage, so input and output seems very different than what Microsoft explains. If JScript is dying (and it appears to be so), where do I go from here? VBScript? My options are limited because the computers I'm using this on are carefully patrolled for new software. JScript's similarity to JavaScript was the biggest reason I had chosen it for porting over some of my prior work. I'm specifically looking for, at best, a console scripting language that doesn't need any extra software on Windows XP or higher, that at least supports standard input, output, pause, and file manipulation, little else.

  I am in the pre-coding phase of creating a website. I know that it will be account based (users have to register/login to use the features). I also know that the server will have to do certain operations that are timer based, that is to say that user will have events that will trigger at a point chosen by the user and do something. I am searching for a good choice in server-side technology, and was wondering what my options are and what the best choice is. I would prefer open technology and something that doesn't use interpreted languages (Java, .net). My first thought is PHP + PGSQL for serverside and HTML+CSS+JS for clients, but I am still looking at my options.

I have this to secure all my documents: Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 127.0.0.1 <FilesMatch "\.(htm|html|css|js|php)$"> Order Allow,Deny Allow from all Allow from 127.0.0.1 </FilesMatch> Now everything works fine, but only my default page www.mysite.com doesn't work and gives me the notification: You don't have permission to access / on this server. what is normal accroding to my coding. But how can you fix this? If there stands www.example.com/index.php it works but if you surf to www.example.com I get this message.

• Why do I need to republish a file when I update it?

  The story is: I am coding a program and at the same time, i want to share it with my group members using ubuntu. They don't have an Ubuntu One account and what I do is to publish the file and my friends just get the link and the file. But, strangely or not, every time I upload a new version of this file (I add more code and save it), the used link seems to be "outdated" and I need to publish the same file again and to get a new link every time i modify the same file. Couldn't it be possible to save a new version of your file and the same link just "points" to the newer version?

• Get the Windows 7 Start Menu Back in Windows 8 with Classic Shell

  I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones.   What is the best method in PHP for the Error Handling ? is there a way in PHP to Convert all PHP errors (warnings notices etc) to exceptions ? what the best way/practise to error handling ? again: if we overuse exceptions (i.e. try/catch) in many situations, i think application will be halted unnecessary. for a simple error checking we can use return false; but it may be cluttering the coding with many if else conditions. what do you guys suggest ?
