• Enumerating .NET assembly resources at runtime

  I have a resource assembly with image files in it that are built using Resource or Content build action. This makes these files accessible using the Uris. However I cannot find the way to enumerate such resources. If I set the build action to Embedded Resource it becomes possible to enumerate the files with the following code: string[] resources = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetManifestResourceNames(); but it in turn makes these files inaccessible using Uris. The question is - how to enumerate resources that are compiled with either Resource or Content build action? NOTE: As Thomas Levesque pointed out it is possible to enumerate such resources by leveraging the AssemblyAssociatedContentFileAttribute, but it seems to only work for WPF Application assemblies and not for class library ones. So the question is still open.

• Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document. What can I do to make it run as well on the Windows machine with emacs 21.3? (defun remove-line-breaks () "Remove line endings in a paragraph." • ASP.NET login control - can I add the FailureText as an item in a ValidationSummary?

  I'm currently working with the ASP.NET login control. I can set a custom failure text and I can add a literal on the page where the failure text is displayed if the login fails. I also have a validation summary on the page in which I collect all errors that can occur (for the moment it just validates that the user has entered a login name and a password. It would be really nice if I could add the failure text of the login control as an item in the validation summary, but I'm not sure if this is even possible? Hoping that the massive brainpower of stackoverflow can give me some pointers? Thanks! /Thomas Kahn PS. I'm coding in C#.

  I have been trying to get Ruby on Rails to migrate a database for the good part of today, the problems all seem to result with this issue, can someone please help! If its a radrails specific problem I guess Ill take this to their forums. • Round prices up to nearest 5 after conversion in oscommerce

  Hi there, A conversion question relating to prices in oscommerce: I am needing for a custom currency conversion to round the USD prices up to the nearest 5$ to avoid prices being displayed at silly prices such as $263. I am trying to convert to an int and round the following line : $curr-display_price($listing['products_price'], tep_get_tax_rate($listing['products_tax_class_id'])); ( as for some reason the price is displayed as a string, im guessing to include the currency sign) However not having much luck. Does anybody know where the root conversion takes place as it might be easier for me to round() or ceil() from there when it is a raw integer Or any other ideas of how I can round the conversion? Now I'm looking to search for a given winner X in the table, and find out what position he is in, when the table is ordered by points. • Make is more OOPey - good structure?

  Hi, I just want advice on whether I could improve structure around a particular class which handles all disk access functions The structure of my program is that I have a class called Disk which gets data from flatfiles and databases on a, you guessed it, hard disk drive. I have functions like LoadTextFileToStringList, WriteStringToTextFile, DeleteLineInTextFile etc which are kind of "generic methods" In the same class I also have some more specific methods such as GetXFromDisk where X might be a particular field in a database table/query. Should I separate out the generic methods from the specialised. Should I make another class which inherits the generic methods. At the moment my class is static as there is no need to have an internal state of the class. I'm not really OOPing am I? Thanks Thomas

I m having a ID column in that table. Now suppose after inserting this record the value of the ID corresponding to this record is 100. Now how this 100 value came to know? Does the previous value of ID ie 99 (Suppose) is stored somewhere in some variable/file in the ORM layer or before inserting this value a query was fired to know about the last inserted value or database is itself doing that or anything else???

  I am putting in the samle date and i am supposed to do something similar what i am asking. I want to run a query that would pull values in any two columns out 3 if it has a 1 or if any one column has a 1 it will return just those results. However it should search all three columns and in any of the three columns where it found value as 1 it should return that result. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks in advance. • Configuring DSVL to show camera images from Logitech9000 webcam

  I am trying to view camera feed from a Logitech9000 camera using DSVL(DirectShow Video Library) http://sourceforge.net/projects/dsvideolib/. I tried changing the flip_v value to true in the config above but it did not make any difference. Any suggestions?

• Looking for easy way to analyze var_dump (PHP) on large objects

  I know (PHP's) var_dump is supposed to be "human readable" and all, but analyzing large objects is just a pain in the neck. I am struggling to make sense of a few of the large objects that are being passed around in a script that we are running. (I know that using xdebug with and IDE is a good idea, but I have not been able to get xdebug to run on this project for some reason - several days lost, ugh). Any ideas on how I can easily digest the contents of a really big var_dump? Any ideas are welcome... Although I am hoping that there is something similar to Thomas Frank's JSON tool (where you just put some code in and it gives a nice graphical representation).

Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

  Hi. In my application the user can defines search-conditions. He can choose a column, set an operator (equals, like, greater than, less or equal than, etc.) and give in the value. After the user clicks on a button and the application should do a search on the database with the condition. I use NHibernate and ask me now, what is the efficientest way to do this with NHibernate. Should I create a query with it like (Column=Name, Operator=Like, Value=%John%) var a = session.CreateCriteria<Customer>(); a.Add(Restrictions.Like("Name", "%John%")); return a.List<Customer>(); Or should I do this with HQL: var q = session.CreateQuery("from Customer where " + where); return q.List<Customer >(); Or is there a more bether solution? • ASP.NET Asynchronous Pages and when to use them

  There have been several articles posted about using  asynchronous pages in ASP.NET but none of them go into detail as to when you should use them. I finally found a great post by Thomas Marquardt that explains the process in depth. He addresses a key misconception also: So, in your ASP.NET application, when should you perform work asynchronously instead of synchronously? Well, only 1 thread per CPU can execute at a time.  Did you catch that?  A lot of people seem to miss this point...only one thread executes at a time on a CPU. When you have more than this, you pay an expensive penalty--a context switch. However, if a thread is blocked waiting on work...then it makes sense to switch to another thread, one that can execute now.  It also makes sense to switch threads if you want work to be done in parallel as opposed to in series, but up until a certain point it actually makes much more sense to execute work in series, again, because of the expensive context switch. Pop quiz: If you have a thread that is doing a lot of computational work and using the CPU heavily, and this takes a while, should you switch to another thread? No! The current thread is efficiently using the CPU, so switching will only incur the cost of a context switch. Ok, well, what if you have a thread that makes an HTTP or SOAP request to another server and takes a long time, should you switch threads? Yes! You can perform the HTTP or SOAP request asynchronously, so that once the "send" has occurred, you can unwind the current thread and not use any threads until there is an I/O completion for the "receive". Between the "send" and the "receive", the remote server is busy, so locally you don't need to be blocking on a thread, but instead make use of the asynchronous APIs provided in .NET Framework so that you can unwind and be notified upon completion. Again, it only makes sense to switch threads if the benefit from doing so out weights the cost of the switch. • Good Scoop: The PeopleSoft/IBM Backstory

  Sometimes you're searching for something online and you find an unrelated, bonus nugget. Last week I stumbled across an interesting blog post from Chris Heller of a PeopleSoft consulting shop in San Ramon, CA called Grey Sparling. I don't know these guys. But Chris, who apparently used to work on the PeopleTools team, wrote a great article on a pre-acquisition, would-be deal between IBM and PeopleSoft that would have standardized PeopleSoft on IBM technology. The behind-the-scenes perspective is interesting. His commentary on the challenges that the company and PeopleSoft customers would have encountered if the deal had gone through was also interesting: ·         "No common ownership. It's hard enough to get large groups of people to work together when they work for the same company, but with two separate companies it is much, much harder. Even within Oracle, progress on Fusion applications was slow until Thomas Kurian took over Fusion applications in addition to Fusion middleware." ·         "No customer buy-in. PeopleSoft customers weren't asking for a conversion to WebSphere, so the fact that doing that could have helped PeopleSoft stay independent wouldn't have meant much to them, especially since the cost of moving to whatever a "PeopleSoft built on WebSphere" would have been significant." ·         "No executive buy-in. This is related to the previous point, but it's worth calling out separately. If Oracle had walked away and the deal with IBM had gone through, and PeopleSoft customers got put through the wringer as part of WebSphere move, all of the PeopleSoft project teams would be put in the awkward position of explaining to their management why these additional costs and headaches were happening. Essentially they would need to "sell" the partnership internally to their own management team. That's not a fun conversation to have." I'm not surprised that something like this was in the works. But I did find the inside scoop and Heller's perspective on the challenges particularly interesting.   How ironic to be in Washington, DC on April 15 - TAX DAY! Fortunately, I avoided IRS offices and attended the much more enjoyable 2010 Life Insurance Conference, presented by LIMRA, LOMA SOA and ACLI. This year's conference offered a variety of tracks focused on the Life Industry including Distribution/Marketing Marketing, Administration, Actuarial/Product Development, Regulatory, Reinsurance and Strategic Management. President and CEO of the ACLI, Frank Keating, opened the event by moderating a session titled "Executive Viewpoint on new Opportunities." Guest speakers included Ted Mathas, President and CEO of NY Life, and John Walters, President and CEO of Hartford Life. Both speakers were insightful as they shared the challenges and opportunities each company faces and the key role life insurance companies play in our society and the global economy. There were several key themes that were reiterated in multiple sessions throughout the conference - the economy is on the rebound, optimism is growing, consumer spending is up and an uptick in employment is likely to follow. The threat of a double dip recession has seemed to passed. Good news for our industry, and welcomed by all in attendance. Of special interest to me, given my background, was some research shared by both The Nolan Group and Novarica in separate sessions. Both firms indicate that policy administration upgrades/replacement projects remain a top priority in 2010. Carriers continue to invest in modern technology. Modern ultra-configurable systems enable carriers to switch from a waterfall to an agile project methodology, which often entails a "culture change" within an organization. Other themes heard throughout the two-day event: Virtually all sessions focused on People, Process and Technology! Product innovation, agility and speed to market are as important as ever. Social Networks and Twitter are becoming more popular ways of communicating with both field and dispersed staff. Several sessions focused on the application, new business and underwriting process. Companies continue looking for ways to increase market agility, accelerate speed to market, address cost issues and improve service levels across the process. They recognize the need to ease the way to do business with both producers and consumers. Author and economic futurist Jeff Thredgold presented an entertaining, informative and humorous general session on Wednesday afternoon that focused on the US and global economies, financial markets and retirement outlook. Thredgold did not disappoint anyone with his message! The Thursday morning general session was keynoted by Therese Vaughan (CEO - NAIC) and Thomas Crawford (President of C2 Group). Both speakers gave a poignant view of the recent financial crisis and discussed "Putting the Pieces Back Together." Therese spoke of the recent financial turmoil and likely changes to regulations to the financial services sector. Tom's topics focused on economic recovery and the political environment in Washington, and how that impacts our industry. Next year's event will be April 11-13, 2011 in Las Vegas.
