• Puppet's automatically generated certificates failing

  I am running a default configuration of Puppet on Debian Squeeze 6.0.4. The server's FQDN is master.example.com. The client's FQDN is client.example.com. I am able to contact the puppet master and send a CSR. I sign it using puppetca -sa but the client will still not connect. Date of both machines is within 2 seconds of Tue Apr 3 20:59:00 UTC 2012 as I wrote this sentence. • iphone - mutableArray cannot store nil objects

  I have a mutable array that is retained and storing several objects. At some point, one object may become nil. When this happens the app will crash, because arrays cannot have nil objects. Imagine something like [object1, object2, object3, nil]; then, object2 = nil [object1, nil, object3, nil]; that is not possible because nil is the end of array marker. So, how can I solve that? thanks for any help.

  There is a strong tendency of making web apps and even seems that very soon a lot of features will be available online so that for every day use people will have all necessary software free online and they will not need to install any software locally. Only specific (professional) tools that usually people don’t use at home will not be available as a web app. So my question, how do you imagine selling software that was necessary for everyday use and was not free (seems they can't make money any more by selling their product – no need of those products). And what disadvantages have web apps, that is to say, what is bad to use software online compared with having the same software locally (please list)? Please do not consider this question not connected with programming, as I would like to have a little statistics from professional programmers who are aware from nowday’s tendency of software and programming.   With CSS selectors a query string body > h1.span subscribes to a specific type of nodes in the tree. Does anyone know how this is done? Selectors for transformations, how does the browser select the result set? And is there a trick to making it efficient? I imagine there being some sort of hierarchical type-tree for the entire structure to which the nodes subscribe and which is what is used when doing the selector queries — but this is only a guess. Does anyone know the real answer? Or even more interesting, what would be the best way to do dynamic lookups on a tree based on jQuery/CSS search queries?

• How does TransactionScope guarantee data integrity across multiple databases?

  Hey guys, Can someone tell me the principle of how TransactionScope guarantees data integrity across multiple databases? I imagine it first sends the commands to the databases and then waits for the databases to respond before sending them a message to apply the command sent earlier. However when execution is stopped abruptly when sending those apply messages we could still end up with a database that has applied the command and one that has not. Can anyone shed some light on this? Edit: I guess what Im asking is can I rely on TransactionScope to guarantee data integrity when writing to multiple databases in case of a power outage or a sudden shutdown. But i can't figure out how he passes an object between the different modelViews. And as you can imagine that step is quite crucial.. In the example he uses an CupOfCoffee Object in the main wizardviewmodel and somehow manages to adjust it throughout the wizard. But i cant see anywhere how he does that. I've already tried to recreate a project like he has but no success. Could anyone tell me how he passes the objects between the different viewModels?

• Why does Silverlight 4 Tools only give partial intellisense?

  I finally got Silverlight 4 Toolkit installed , referenced and working after the difficulty of finding the right namespace described in this question. But intellisense doesn't work fully: after I type "tk:", it doesn't pop up the various controls I have available, but if I type a control name out, e.g. DockPanel, then it works, as shown below. It will even give me intellisense after I type tk:DropPanel, which is odd. How can I get intellisense to work in all cases for the Silverlight 4 Toolkit? I can imagine I need another namespace, but this site says that this reference: is now all you need (and will be automatically used by both Visual Studio and Blend)

  I am a web developer for a Django-based site for a student organization, and I have the opportunity to make the website temporarily absurd for a day of general campus-wide debauchery and chaos (long story, doesn't matter.) What are your best ideas for web development practical jokes (that you could never use in the real world)? For example, one idea we had was to use a client-side script to convert each character to its upside down equivalent in Unicode, si?? ??i? ?ui????os. I'm not necessarily looking for Django-specific solutions. I imagine most of these things would happen on the front-end. I am also quite aware that usability will suffer considerably--the point is to be fun for a day, and there will always be a link to the normal version of the site. Also, everything must be relatively cosmetic and easily reversible--I'm happy to swap out static CSS/JS/HTML/templates/images, and even temporarily add a django view, but no messing with the data level!

  Hi all. Imagine a simple model. class Service belongs_to :user validates_associated :user accepts_nested_attributes_for :user end Nothing special right? The validations on the associated User model trigger correctly in development mode. But don't do anything in production. I've added a validates_on_presence :user just like the docs say. This triggers when there's no User associated with the Service, but fill in one thing on the User model and nothing happens! It's driving me up the walls. Am I overlooking something? • [Cocoa] CoreData bindings for NSPopupButton

  I'm looking to use a dropdown menu (possibly an NSPopupButton object) to represent the hierarchical results of two Core Data entities (Genre and Movie) and their relationships. In my current data model, my Genre entity has a one-to-many relationship with my Movie entity. What I'm now looking to do is generate the contents of an NSPopupButton to show a hierarchical list of Genres and the Movies associated with them, like so: Genre 1 Film 1 Film 2 Genre 2 Film 3 Film 4 Note that, in the above example, only Movie objects are to be selectable by the user (Genre objects will appear, but be unselectable). Also, to complicate matters slightly, I have an additional NSPopupButton which lists Movie Rental locations. The location selected by the user ultimately impacts on the genres and films available in the second dropdown. I imagine that bindings will only take me so far with this problem and that, ultimately, I'll have to populate the contents of the dropdown menu myself. I'm posting here for thoughts and opinions on the best way to go about this.

  I am developing a Cocoa application which involves a chat element. One approach I've considered is using Websockets to handle client-server communication. This would be particularly desirable because chats will also be displayed on a website, and using Websockets could make the implementation very simple. So: would it be possible to use a WebView element, and use Websockets within it? (I know Safari doesn't support Websockets yet, so I imagine this is not possible?) Failing that, are there any Websocket client libraries for C, Objective C, or any other language I could successfully embed within my application? Suggestions welcomed.

• Alpha transparent PNGs not displaying correctly in Mobile Safari

  I'm using some semi-transparent PNGs as background-images on various websites. These are usually something like a 1x1 image with a 30-percent opaque white layer. I've noticed that Mobile Safari does not display them correctly, giving them a darker/grayish tint. I've created a couple test pages to illustrate. View them both in your normal browser, and then on Mobile Safari, and you should see what I mean. The submit url is "post_data.php" The posted data is: id=8&name=Denis The PHP verifies if variables id and name are POSTED and their data type. If this is ok it proceed to do some stuff on a database. My question is, how can i prevent someone from creating his own html form, outside my web site, or whatever, and posting false data to my PHP script? • Dynamics CRM 4.0 Campaign Response Workflow issue

  Hi I am pretty novice when it comes to CRM so hopefully someone can help me. I am trying to create a workflow that triggers when the campaign response is set to closed and then updates a few fields within the related 'Customers' record. I would have imagined that this would have been straight forward. However, when creating my workflow it appears that the 'Customer' is not in the related entitities list and therefore I cannot set the fields I require updating. I imagine that the issue is to do with the 'Customer' attribute being similar to the 'To'/'From' attributes on an email/phone call activity, whereas I need the attribute to resemble the 'Regarding' attribute. I presume I could create an attribute to replace 'customer' and apply all the appropriate relationships, but I dont really want to do this. Is there a simple way to get around this and/or am I missing something? Cheers

• Avoiding the Controller with Routing Rules in ASP.NET MVC

  I've created a website with ASP.NET MVC. I have a number of static pages that I am currently serving through a single controller called Home. This creates some rather ugly URLs. example.com/Home/About example.com/Home/ContactUs example.com/Home/Features You get the idea. I'd rather not have to create a controller for each one of these as the actions simply call the View with no model being passed in. Is there a way to write a routing rule that will remove the controller from the URL? I'd like it to look like: example.com/About example.com/ContactUs example.com/Features If not, how is this situation normally handled? I imagine I'm not the first person to run in to this.

• Legal uses of setjmp and GCC

  Using GCC (4.0 for me), is this legal: if(__builtin_expect(setjmp(buf) != 0, 1)) { // handle error } else { // do action } I found a discussion saying it caused a problem for GCC back in 2003, but I would imagine that they would have fixed it by now. The C standard says that it's illegal to use setjmp unless it's one of four conditions, the relevant one being this: one operand of a relational or equality operator with the other operand an integer constant expression, with the resulting expression being the entire controlling expression of a selection or iteration statement; But if this is a GCC extension, can I guarantee that it will work under for GCC, since it's already nonstandard functionality? I tested it and it seemed to work, though I don't know how much testing I'd have to do to actually break it. (I'm hiding the call to __builtin_expect behind a macro, which is defined as a no-op for non-GCC, so it would be perfectly legal for other compilers.)

The first approach fails on the very first validation error, whereas the second one builds up a list of failures and presents it. I'm wondering about this in the context of both server-side and client-side data validation. Which method is appropriate in what context, and why? My personal preference for data-validation on the client-side is the second method which informs the user of all failing constraints. I'm not informed enough to have an opinion about the server-side, although I would imagine it depends on the business logic involved.

  Hi! I want to populate a star schema / cube in SSIS / SSAS. I prepared all my dimension tables and my fact table, primary keys etc. The source is a 'flat' (item level) table and my problem is now how to split it up and get it from one into the respective tables. I did a fair bit of googling but couldn't find a satisfying solution to the problem. One would imagine that this is a rather common problem/situation in BI development?! Thanks, alexl

  I just finished to read "coders at works", a brilliant book by Peter Seibel with 15 interviews to some of the most interesting computer programmers alive today. Well, many of the interviewees have (co)invented\implemented a new programming language. For example: * Joe Armstrong: Inventor of Erlang * L. Peter Deutsch: implementer of Smalltalk-80 * Brendan Eich: Inventor of JavaScript * Dan Ingalls: Smalltalk implementor and designer * Simon Peyton Jones: Coinventor of Haskell * Guy Steele: Coinventor of Scheme Is out of any doubt that their minds have something special and unreachable, and i'm not crazy to think i will ever able to create a new language; i'm just interested in this topic. So, imagine a funny\grotesque scenario where your crazy boss one day will come to your desk to say "i want a new programming language with my name on it..take the time you need and do it", what will you start to study? What kind of knowledge do you need to model, design and implement a brand new programming language?

• What is the best way to set up a PHP development environment on a Mac?

  When I do PHP, I use XAMPP to set up a development environment on Windows, then upload to Linux servers, works very well. I'm now passing on a PHP project to a person who has a Mac so he needs a local PHP dev environment. I noticed XAMPP has a version for Mac which I will recommend. But knowing that Mac is always a bit different, has anyone used any other easy PHP environment setup tool for the Mac, or I could even imagine that Mac solves this issue more elegantly by e.g. having a web server ready to go upon first boot etc. What is the best way to set up a PHP development environment on a Mac?
