• Linq to Entities : using ToLower() on NText fields

  I'm using SQL Server 2005, with a case sensitive database.. In a search function, I need to create a Linq To Entities (L2E) query with a "where" clause that compare several strings with the data in the database with these rules : The comparison is a "Contains" mode, not strict compare : easy as the string's Contains() method is allowed in L2E The comparison must be case insensitive : I use ToLower() on both elements to perform an insensitive comparison. All of this performs really well but I ran into the following Exception : "Argument data type ntext is invalid for argument 1 of lower function" on one of my fields. It seems that the field is a NText field and I can't perform a ToLower() on that. What could I do to be able to perform a case insensitive Contains() on that NText field ?

• WebClient vs. HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse

  It seems to me that most of what can be accomplished with HttpWebRequest/Response can also be accomplished with the WebClient class. I read somewhere that WebClient is a high-level wrapper for WebRequest/Response. So far, I can't see anything that can be accomplished with HttpWebRequest/Response that can not be accomplished with WebClient, nor where HttpWebRequest/Response will give you more "fine-grained" control. When should I use WebClient and when HttpWebRequest/Response? (Obviously, HttpWebRequest/Response are HTTP specific.) If HttpWebRequest/Response are lower level then WebClient, what can I accomplish with HttpWebRequest/Response that I cannot accomplish with WebClient?

• DataGridView row added event

  Hi all, I'm using a DataGridView and I bind a List to the DataSource. I already have the right columns and I map exactly the fields. What I'm trying to do is handling a sort of RowAdded or RowDataBound (like in aspx GridView) event. The only event that I found is RowsAdded but no matter how many items I have, it is fired only 4 times the first time i bound, and twice the other times, with values e.RowCount:1 e.RowIndex:0 e.RowCount:[n-1] e.RowIndex:1 *where n is the number of my items is there a way I can get to a handle for each item?

• IMAP Idle Timeout

  Lets say I am using IMAP IDLE to monitor changes in a mail folder. The IMAP spec says that IDLE connections should only stay alive for 30 minutes max, but it is recommended that a lower number of minutes is selected - say 20 minutes, then cancel the idle and restart. I am wondering what would happen if the mail contents changed between the idle canceling, and the new idle being created. An email could potentially be missed. Given that RECENT is a bit vague, this could lead to getting a message list before the old idle ends, and a new idle starts. But this is almost the same as polling every 20 minutes, and defeats some of the benefit of idle. Alternatively, a new idle session could be started prior to terminating the expiring one. But in any case, I think this problem has already been solved so here I am asking for recommendations. Thanks, Paul

• Error window show modal in MVVM WPF

  Hi guys I have implemented my MVVM error message as a message dialog that subscribes to error messages via a mediator class, so that other viewmodels can notify it if any errors occur. When an error occurs, I set the visibility attribute in the viewmodel to Visible, to display the error window. This is all bound in the Error window from the viewmodel. However, this window is NOT modal! I need to show it as a dialog and not just set the visibility to true - is there any kind of binding I can do, even if I have to extend the functionality of the window? I'd rather not break MVVM if I can avoid it. Thanks!

  I'm building a custom WPF control that derives from TabControl. In the ControlTemplate, I'm using a ItemsControl to display a list that is being bound from the template (an observable collection of type FileMenuItem). During program execution, I'm getting the following error in the output window: ItemTemplate and ItemTemplateSelector are ignored for items already of the ItemsControl's container type; Type='FileMenuItem' The type FileMenuItem is derived from MenuItem. I googled the error and couldn't find anything about it, has anyone run into this while developing custom controls? I can post more code if it would help. Thanks!

What would be the suggested naming convention for button labels while performing the following actions.. User creation (Add User... or Add User or Add user) Event creation (Add Event... or Add Event or Add event) View users button (List All Users or List All users or List all users ) Most of the sites seem to contain the last option (e.g. Add user) where the first alphabet in the word is capitalized and rest all are lower case). • Is the switch to Dvorak worth it?

  To those who were experienced ( 70 WPM, say) typists before the switch to Dvorak -- were you faster after switching? There are a couple good SO threads on Dvorak, but they are more on how to learn or reduction in typing pain than speed before/after. I know it will take me 1-2 months to feel comfortable, but I want to know if I should expect to be faster afterward. I am a programmer and type maybe 90-110 WPM on QWERTY. EDIT: I agree that coding is not typically IO-bound, and that a minimum typing speed is sufficient. This is half from curiosity, but it will be an undertaking to achieve QWERTY parity, so I want to know if I should at least expect some asymptotic improvement.

I am not sure, but it seems that it is not bound to search but rather a hostname resolving. Since entering a single word that might be a hostname redirects to Bing. • Embedding icon in .exe with py2exe, visible in Vista?

  Hello, I've been trying to embed an icon (.ico) into my "compyled" .exe with py2exe. Py2Exe does have a way to embed an icon: windows=[{ 'script':'MyScript.py', 'icon_resources':[(1,'MyIcon.ico')] }] And that's what I am using. The icon shows up fine on Windows XP or lower, but doesn't show at all on Vista. I suppose this is because of the new Vista icon format, which can be in PNG format, up to 256x256 pixels. So, how can I get py2exe to embed them into my executable, without breaking the icons on Windows XP? I'm cool with doing it with an external utility rather than py2exe - I've tried this command-line utility to embed it, but it always corrupts my exe and truncates its size for some reason.

• Neural Network Output Grouping 0.5?

  I tried to write a Neural Network system, but even running through simple AND/OR/NOR type problems, the outputs seem to group around 0.5 (for a bias of -1) and 0.7 (for a bias of 1). It doesn't look exactly "wrong"... The 1,1 in the AND pattern does seem higher than the rest and the 0,0 in the OR looks lower, but they are still all grouped so it's debatable. I was wondering a) if there's some obvious mistake I've made or b) if there's any advice for debugging Neural Nets... seeing as you can't always track back exactly where an answer came from... There,when we jump to any page, you will not find half displayed line(i.e only upper part of the letters visible and lower part will be in the next page) or half images where the other part in the next page. How to push the line to next page if i cannot display it completely in the current page?

  In extension of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1580750/example-code-of-libssh2-being-used-for-port-forwarding I was wondering if there's an "easier" way to connect to the locally binded addr:port. From the link: you bind a remote port and list it locally, you accept incoming data from the port and send it to another socket (namely the local addr:port), after which I'd like to connect to the local addr:port. Is there a way to skip the "send it to another" step and direct the data directly for my "connect to localhost" ? There are two parts to why I want this, first, it seems excessive, and in the spirit of piping, I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible. Second, since I'm trying to connect to a localhost'ed bound port forward, all code is in the same thread, making a continiously getting data-sending data, and polling the sending data from another socket, a bit tricky. • Delphi 2010 Wide functions vs. String functions

  We're currently converting a Delphi 2007 project to Delphi 2010. We were already using Unicode (via WideStrings and TNT Unicode Controls). I was expecting to replace all Wide functions, e.g. WideUpperCase, with their equivalent, e.g. UpperCase, but they do not work the same way. For example, WideUpperCase works differently from UpperCase. WideUpperCase correctly uppercases Campañas, but UpperCase leaves the ñ in lower case. Are there any other differences that I should be aware of? e.g. do WideFormat and Format work the same? Thanks

• Moving a point along a vector

  Hello- I have a point defined by x,y and a vector defined by heading, speed. I am attempting to move the point x,y along this vector, at a distance of 'speed'. Below is the code I am currently using: self.x += self.speed * cos(self.heading); self.y += self.speed * sin(self.heading); Heading can be any angle in a full circle - 0 to 2p (0-360 degrees). The problem is the above code: Only moves along the x or y axis when angle is 0-270 for example, when the avatar is facing the top-right corner (45 degrees relative), it moves straight up. Does not move at all when angle is 270-360 heading, speed, X and Y are all doubles, and heading is reported by the user touching a direction-pad in the lower corner. I know the heading is correct because the avatar rotates to the correct direction, it is just the actual movement I am having problems with. Thanks for any help - Chris

• Winforms checkbox Databinding problem

  Hello everybody! In a winforms application (VB, VS2008 SP1) i bound a checkbox field to a SQL Server 2005 BIT field. The databinding itself seems to work, there is this litte problem: user creates a new record and checks the checkbox, then the user decides to create a new record (without having saved the previous, so there are 2 new records to be submitted) and checks also the second. Now the user decides to save these records: the result is that only the second record keeps the checked value, the first one is unchecked! (i tried the same with 5 records: the result is the same, the first 4 records are unchecked and only the last one keeps the checked state). What do i miss?? Thanks in advance

  Is it possible to specify that multiple roles are required inside the authorization element of the web.config file? I currently have this block in one web.config of my site for a specific directory: <authorization> <allow roles="Global, Region" /> <deny users="*" /> </authorization> I've just identified a special case where a person with two lower-level permissions than Global and Region should also have access to this directory. Roughly, I want something like this: <authorization> <allow roles="GlobalManager, RegionManager, SiteManager && FooSite" /> <deny users="*" /> </authorization> Any ideas? I realize I probably should have a new role for this scenario, but I'd like to avoid that. Thanks!

But the subviews in the main view are flowing out of the mainview in landscape mode. so i forced a "setNeedsLayout for the mainview, making subviews in mainview to fit into the mainview boundary. But the issues is that subviews added in the lower part fo mainview are not responding to touches in landscape mode, but working fine with portrait mode. Any F1 ?

  In ActiveReports, how can I change formatting based on values in the report data? Specifically, I want to show or hide pictures based on a value in the data. The report gets bound to a list of objects via a set to its DataSource property. These objects have a Condition property with values "Poor", "Normal", etc. I have some pictures in the report that correspond to the different conditions, and I want to hide all the pictures except for the one corresponding to the value. Should I subscribe to the Format event for the detail section? If so, how do I get to the "current record" data?

  I have a div that I have bound the jQuery hover event to activate a slideDown using slideToggle: <div class="Square"> <div class="RedSquare"></div> <div class="GraySquare"></div> </div> $("div.RedSquare").hover( function() { $(this).siblings("div.GraySquare").slideToggle("fast"); }, function() { $(this).siblings("div.GraySquare").slideToggle("fast"); } ); It toggles a div '.GraySquare' right below it. Basically making a gray box slide down from the red box. The problem I am facing is that when the mouse moves over the gray div the slide toggles up. I want it to remain down when hovering over the red or gray square. Any help is appreciated.
