• MySQL - Configuration

  Having previously detailed how to install MySQL Server, the next step is configuring MySQL. The MySQL configuration wizard can either be run immediately following installation from the MySQL installation wizard or manually from the Start Menu. Following the splash screen you can then choose whether to run a detailed or standard configuration. The detailed configuration allows you to create the optimal configuration for your specific machine, whereas the standard configuration creates a general configuration that can then be manually tuned. I chose detailed.   You are then asked to choose the type of server instance that is being configured. In this case it is a developer machine. Following this you are asked to choose the type of database usage that you expect on the server. I opted for multifunctional. You must then specify the location of the InnoDB tablespace.   Next specify the number of concurent connections to the server.   Now you must configure the networking options. I left the Strict mode enabled as this is the recommended option, but I disabled TCP/IP networking as I wanted to restrict this MySQL installation to the local machine only.   Set the character set that is best suited to your use - for me this was the default standard character set. Next up is the option to run MySQL as a service and whether or not to include the mysql dircetories in the windows PATH. I kept the install as a windows service option enabled, but unchecked the Launch MySQL server automatically option. This is because I only wanted MySQL running when I specifically want to use it. I also enabled the include in windows PATH option.   You can then change the security settings for the mysql installation. I opted to change the root password, disable root from local machines and disable annoymous access.   You are now ready to execute the configuration.   Once completed you should hopefully see the completed screen with lots of nice ticks against the various configuration tasks.

• Booting Error while using 12.04 booting from GRUB

  my name is Paul. I have encountered an issue relating to GRUB booting and the booting process in general. I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my machine for quite a while. Before that, i had (before) 10.04, 11.04, 11.10, etc. I have been running Ubuntu, in general, but more specifically 12.04 for a long time with little to no problems. The problem: Earlier today, i was using my machine and then decided to take a little break. I shut down my machine (laptop, in case anyone was wondering) and left. Later, I came back ready to start it up and continue. I started it up and it took me to the Toshiba screen (like normal) then to the GRUB screen. I guessed that nothing was truly wrong, and chose the first option (something around the lines of: Ubuntu, with linux 3.22.0-35-generic). I waited for a bit and it still displayed the same purple screen. I restarted it and now chose the option like the first but with recovery at the end. Same result. Later, I waited longer and found that my computer came up with a bunch of lines of script. I waited longer but nothing new happened. What are your suggestions as to fix this problem? I will let my computer run overnight with the recovery setting and will let you know what the result is. Until then, please help. Thank you, your time and effort is greatly appreciated!

• Using EC2 instance as main development platform

  My problem I am working as a consultant for various companies. Each company provides me with a laptop where with their software on and I also have my own where I have my development environment. I tend to buy a new laptop every second year and find myself spending lots of time configuring and installing software. I also sometimes spend a lot of time waiting for my laptop to process things. To solve all these issues, I am now considering using EC2 (running windows instances) as my main development platform and just access this from any PC I happen to be at. I calculated that running the High-CPU On-Demand Instances (medium) for 8 hours a day for a year costs me 580$, which is acceptable. I imagine that when I approach the workplace each day, I will make a single click my phone to fire up the instance, so it is ready when I get to work. I should have different icons on my phone to fire up the various instance types. The same software should of course automatically be loaded on the various hardware (sometimes I would even need their instance with 68.4 GB of memory). Another advantage is that if I am having a specific problem with my instance, I could fire up another instance and have someone look into the problem and update the image. My question: Does anyone have experience with such a setup on EC2? What kind of problems do you forsee?

• Problems with wired ethernet connection Ubuntu 11.10

  After some partition shuffling, I've got a problem on my 11.10 system. The wired ethernet interface fails to come up, although the wireless interface is working. I'm using NetworkManager. I thought this may be a problem with NetworkManager, so I checked the config files, which look ok. I then tried re-installing the package, but this didn't resolve the issues. I'm not sure at this point if the problem is due to software configuration, or a hardware problem. I've also tried the cable in other router ports, but same problem.   After the introduction of the Recommended Patch Collections (RPCs) in late 2012, Fixed Assets development has released an RPC about every six months.  You may recall that an RPC is a collection of recommended patches consolidated into a single, downloadable patch, ready to be applied.  The RPCs are created with the following goals in mind: Stability:  Address issues that occur often and interfere with the normal completion of crucial business processes, such as period close--as observed by Oracle Development and Global Customer Support. Root Cause Fixes:  Deliver a root cause fix for data corruption issues that delay period close, normal transaction flow actions, performance, and other issues. Compact:  While bundling a large number of important corrections, the file footprint is kept as small as possible to facilitate uptake and minimize testing. Reliable:  Reliable code with multiple customer downloads and comprehensive testing by QA, Support and Proactive Support.  There has been a revision to the RPC release process for spring 2014.  Instead of releasing product-specific RPCs, development has released a 12.1.3 RPC that is EBS-wide.  This EBS RPC includes all product-recommended patches along with their dependencies. • What is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System?

  In order to understand what an Enterprise Resource Planning System is let us look at a classic American kids snack, the Rice Krispy Treat if we conceptually view the treat as a company’s internal applications as a whole.  Furthermore we can view a company’s departmentalized software applications as the theoretical Rice Krispies in the treat. In addition, the Rice Krispies consist of a combination of ingredients that be broken down into data, user interfaces and business logic. Next, we have the margarine or butter that is used to help the marshmallows bind with the Rice Krispies; this role in our conceptual view is taken by a data source typically as a relational database management system. Finally we have the melted marshmallows which act as the ERP software that connects all of the individual departmental software applications in to one unified system that allows all user one unified system to interact with all of the individual dispersed systems. An example of this would be if a customer places an order with a telephone operator and once the orders is processed an employee in the shipping department can see the order ready for fulfillment on his order screen. The ERP acts a go between for various independent departmental systems so that they can integrate with one another.

• How do I backup my customer's data?

  If you run a SaaS app, or work on one, I would love to hear from you. Where the safety and security of your customer's data is paramount, how do you secure it and back it up? I would love to know your main host (e.g. Heroku, Engine Yard, Rackspace, MediaTemple, etc.) and who you use for your backup. Be as detailed as possible - e.g. a quick overview of your service and the data you store (images for instance), what happens with the images when the user uploads them (e.g. they go to your Linode VPS, and posted to the site for them to see - then they are automatically sent to AWS or wherever, then once a week they are backed up to tape by the managed hosting provider, and you also back them up to your house/office). If you could also give some idea as to what the unit cost (per GB/per user/per month) of storage is - on average, I would really appreciate that. Getting ready to launch my app, and I would love to get some more perspective on the nitty gritty details involved. Thanks!

• Oracle Tutor - Is Anyone Reading Your Documentation?

  If you are responsible for documenting your business practices, wouldn't it be nice to know if anyone is using the documentation? If the employees find it useful? You might want to consider surveying the users of the documentation on a regular basis. There are a number of free survey tools online (search for "free survey tools"), and you can have a survey ready in a matter of minutes. It's as simple as gathering a list of questions and a list of email addresses. For the questions, here are some suggestions. How often do you access the policy and procedure site? How useful is the site? How easy is it to navigate the site? How often are your questions answered on the site? What suggestions do you have to make the site more useful? You may want to consider just asking a few questions each month so that employees can complete the survey in less than 5 minutes (you'll get more responses). Make sure you have several comment boxes in the survey so that the employees can give suggestions. As the users of your documentation, the employees may have some terrific ideas that will enhance the usability of your policy and procedure site. • Does Agile force developers to work more?

  Looking at common Agile practices it seems to me that they (intentionally or unintentionally?) force developer to spend more time actually working as opposed to reading blogs/articles, chatting, coffee breaks and just plain procrastinating. In particular: 1) Pair programming - the biggest work-forcer, just because it is inconvenient to do all that procrastination when there are two of you sitting together. 2) Short stories - when you have a HUGE chunk of work that must be done in e.g. a month, it is pretty common to slack off in the first three weeks and switch to OMG DEADLINE mode for the last one. And with the little chunks (that must be done in a day or less) it is exact opposite - you feel that time is tight, there is no space for maneuvering, and you will be held accountable for the task pretty soon, so you start working immediately. 3) Team communication and cohesion - when you underperform in a slow, distanced and silent environment it may feel ok, but when at the end of the day at Scrum meeting everyone boasts what they have accomplished and you have nothing to say you may actually feel ashamed. 4) Testing and feedback - again, it prevents you from keeping tasks "99% ready" (when it's actually around 20%) until the deadline suddenly happens. Do you feel that under Agile you work more than under "conventional" methodologies? Is this pressure compensated by the more comfortable environment and by the feeling of actually getting right things done quickly?

  I am not completely sure if this is the right place to put this question, but since it's the programming thread I guessed that there's many experienced programmers here. :) Ok, hello! My name is Andreas and I am a 16 years old guy from Norway. For some time now I've wanted to learn a programming language. Six months ago I started learning C++, but quit withing a week due to lack of motivation. The same thing happend only 2 months ago when I tried to learn Lua. I wanted to program mods to the game Garry's mod, and was really motivated. Then I stopped playing the game, and the programming stopped with it. Today though I am ready again. The only difference is that I am not completely sure what I want to do with the language. I only want to create something, and I miss the progress of failing and enduring hard work until I finally solve the problem I've worked on for hours. What I am trying to say is; Is there any program out there that allows me, a complete noob (I didn't learn that much in a week, so I like to call myself a beginner), to create apps, mods or something similar but at the same time being qualified as a first time language? I was thinking of Java, because Android, Minecraft and many other applications and games use it. But I've heard that it is going to be replaced by a program called HTML 5 (whatever that is), is this true? I certainly don't want to spend many hours of my life on something that is useless in a year or two. Hopefully I didn't make this too complicated. I know that it is hard to recommend something when I don't have a goal, but I really don't know what to say.   Printing has become an application aware feature in Metro applications. This makes the outcome of a print job different from application to application, but the question remains, how do you print? Using the Keyboard Not all apps support printing in Windows 8, a good example of one that does is Mail. So fire up the default Mail app select an email you want to print. When you are ready, go ahead and press the ctrl + P keyboard combination. This will bring up a list of available print devices on the right-hand side, you can use the up and down arrows to select a printer. You will get most of the options you are use to when printing, so once you have set up your preferences go ahead and hit the print button. Using the Mouse If you would rather use your mouse, move it to the bottom right hand corner of your screen, which will bring up the Charms bar, from here you will need to click on the devices charm. • RPi and Java Embedded GPIO: Hooking Up Your Wires for Java

  So, you bought your blue jumper wires, your LEDs, your resistors, your breadboard, and your fill of Fry's for the day. How do you hook this cool stuff up to write Java code to blink them LEDs? I'll step you through it. First look at that pinout diagram of the GPIO header that's on your RPi. Find the pins in the corner of your RPi board and make sure to orient it the right way. The upper left corner pin should have the characters "P1" next to it on the board. That pin next to "P1" is your Pin #1 (in the diagram). Then, you can start counting left, right, next row, left, right, next row, left, right, and so on: Pins # 1, 2, next row, 3, 4, next row, 5, 6, and so on. Take one blue jumper wire and connect to Pin # 3 (GPIO0). Connect the other end to a resistor and then the other end of the resistor into the breadboard. Each row of grouped-together holes on a breadboard are connected, so plug in the short-end of a common cathode LED (long-end of a common anode LED) into a hole that is in the same grouping as where the resistor is plugged in. Then, connect the other end of the LED back to Pin # 6 (GND) on the RPi GPIO header. Now you have your first LED connected ready for you to write some Java code to turn it on and off. (As, extra credit you can connect 7 other LEDs the same way to with one lead to Pins # 5, 7, 11, 13, 15, 19 & 21). Whew! That wasn't so bad, was it?   Oracle OpenWorld Shanghai 2013 was held July 22nd – 25th at the International Expo Center in Shanghai, China. The conference drew over 19,000 attendees from 44 countries. In addition, 580 CxOs attended the Executive Edge program, and 430+ partners attended the Oracle Partner Network Exchange. The conference included a number of sessions on Big Data, Business Analytics, Business Intelligence and Enterprise Performance Management delivered by Oracle, our partners and customers.  I had the pleasure to attend the conference and delivered three sessions focused on Oracle’s Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) applications. Each of my sessions was well-attended, and in a few cases was standing room only, so there is clearly a lot of interest in the China market in EPM. The EPM and BI demo pods in the DemoGrounds at the conference also received a lot of traffic. In addition to the conference sessions I delivered, I had several meetings with customers and partners in Shanghai.These sessions and meetings I attended made clear the interest that customers in China have in improving their planning, management reporting, financial reporting, and profitability management processes. In fact, with the China Ministry of Finance now standardizing on XBRL for annual reporting across multiple agencies in China, there is a great opportunity here for our disclosure management application. • How can I making Twitter, Facebook and Reddit share buttons load last?

  I have a website with a number of pages that sport twitter, facebook and reddit share buttons. They take forever to load and until they do the rest of the page doesn't load. So how I can make them load last? The buttons load where ever the script code is placed. As far as I know, I can't place the script code at the bottom of the page and move the resulting buttons after the fact. I want them to appear near the top, which right now means they are stopping everything below them from loading for several seconds. I tried loading them using javascript, but using JQuery's $(document).ready(), but that failed. It seems to leave the page in some sort of loading loop from which it never emerges. Are there other ways to get these to load last?

• starting up with VPS or cloud hosting? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? Summary: I want to start hosting my product. I'd like to register domains (at some point). I'm a linux beginner. Thinking about scalability and price, I'm thinking am I better off on a VPN to get started or would some form of cloud hosting be better (not being familiar with either). Full question: I'm creating a product where people can create their own 3D representations of whatever data / info they have, and (re)organise that data. The product is coming along beautifully on my local environment, but it's about time I start getting some form of hosting ready, and I could really use some advice where / how to get started: I'd like people to be able to move/register their own domains on my server. I could start without this just to demo the product, but it would be the very first on the todo list. I'd like to automatically copy some files / install databases etc for each domain. I probably want to see if I can let users manage their own subdomains at some points, but for now: I'd like start as simple as possible. I've always on a windows machine, so my linux experience is quite basic. I really don't mind getting into it, but I'm thinking it's better to get my product out first of all and see where to go from there. Although... I'd like things to be scalable. If I set up some reseller VPN now which only scales to 100 domains or so, which means I have to set up something else / move again when I pass that level, or which means that I'm in trouble if I suddenly get lots of new customers... hmm. Finally, I need to start cheap. I'm putting all I have into starting this company, and live on very little. So before I have any customers, 50 dollars a month is a fair bit and 100 dollars a month may be too much. If anyone has some tips to help get me started I'd be really grateful.

  I'm using a Java JOGL wrapper called processing.org. I have coded some enviroment on it and I'm quite proud of it even if it has some ready stuffs that I didn't know anything about it (==LIGHTS). Then, for some geometry, I've decided to use a VBO. I had to pass in the hard way and recode all lights. But I can't achieve the same result. I am also interested in the latest edition of Windows which nothing but our Windows 7. Next to Vista I like this version very much. Out of curiosity I have installed the prebuild version of Windows 7. I tried installing the express edition here and it failed making me disappointed. I tried two or three times and finally I decided to download the trial version of Windows 7. After that I can install the Visual Studio 2010 express edition easily. • Per-vertex animation with VBOs: Stream each frame or use index offset per frame?

  Scenario Meshes are animated using either skeletons (skinned animation) or some form of morph targets (i.e. per-vertex key frames). However, in either case, the animations are known in full at load-time, that is, there is no physics, IK solving, or any other form of in-game pose solving. The number of character actions (animations) will be limited but rich (hand-animated). There may be multiple characters using a each mesh and its animations simultaneously in-game (they will be at different poses/keyframes at the same time). Assume color and texture coordinate buffers are static. Goal To leverage the richness of well vetted animation tools such as Blender to do the heavy lifting for a small but rich set of animations. I am aware of additive pose blending like that from Naughty Dog and similar techniques but I would prefer to expend a little RAM/VRAM to avoid implementing a thesis-ready pose solver. I would also like to avoid implementing a key-frame + interpolation curve solver (reinventing Blender vertex groups and IPOs). Current Considerations Much like a non-shader-powered pose solver, create a VBO for each character and copy vertex and normal data to each VBO on each frame (VBO in STREAMING). Create one VBO for each animation where each frame (interleaved vertex and normal data) is concatenated onto the VBO. Then each character simply has a buffer pointer offset based on its current animation frame (e.g. pointer offset = (numVertices+numNormals)*frameNumber). (VBO in STATIC) Known Trade-Offs In 1 above: Each VBO would be small but there would be many VBOs and therefore lots of buffer binding and vertex copying each frame. Both client and pipeline intensive. In 2 above: There would be few VBOs therefore insignificant buffer binding and no vertex data getting jammed down the pipe each frame, but each VBO would be quite large. Are there any pitfalls to number 2 (aside from finite memory)? Are there other methods that I am missing?

• Serious error on first attempts to dual boot Ubuntu 14.04 with Win7

  I downloaded Ubuntu 14.04 from the website which I saved to my desktop with WinRar. My trial with winrar had expired so I have now tried it with Active@Isoburner but I'm getting no further. I eventually got it burnt onto a DVD(4.7gb) and tried to boot from DVD and normally. Neither way works. It looks like its about to boot but then a message appears saying that a serious error has occurred...the disk drive for /tmp is not ready yet or not present...press I to ignore, s to skip or m for manual... At this point I'm lost and unsure what to do. My laptop Toshiba Equium A210-17I is over 5 or 6 years old. Available space on the Hard Drive is 24gb. 2gb RAM. It originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium edition but about a year ago or more a friend wiped it clean for me as I was having no end of problems with Vista. He installed Windows 7 Ultimate(which I don't have a disc for). How can I resolve this issue and get Ubuntu to boot up? Do I have to install a previous version of Ubuntu first? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards. Beetle.
