• Design for a plugin based application

  I am working on application, details of which I cannot discuss here. We have core framework and the rest is designed as plug in. In the core framework we have a domain object. This domain object is updated by the plugins. I have defined an interface in which I have function as DomainObject doProcessing(DomainObject object) My intention here is I pass the domain object, the plug in will update it and return it. This updated object is then passed again to different plugin to be updated. I am not sure if this is a good approach. I don't like passing the DomainObject to plugin. Is there a better way I can achieve this? Should I just request data from plugin and update the domain object myself?

• Unable to install flash plugin in Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit). The upgrade went smoothly (far more than I expected). Unfortunately, I cannot seem to install the flash plugin in either Firefox or Chrome. chrome://plugins does not show flash. I tried 19:17farhat ~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done flashplugin-installer is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Yet, I cannot seem to find anything related to flash on the system. 19:17farhat ~$ sudo updatedb [sudo] password for farhat: 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflashplayer.so 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflashplayer 19:17farhat ~$ locate libflash /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/libflashlo.so 19:17farhat ~$ I am at the end of everything I know. • How do I enable Flash 11.2 in Chrome?

  I'm trying to force Chrome to use Flash 11.2 rather than the packaged Pepper version because it doesn't support DRM and I want to be able to use Amazon Instant Video/HBO GO. I followed Adobe's instructions to a tee but when I restart Chrome and view the plugins, the Pepper flash version is still the only one available. I have expanded the details and am certain I have not just missed the other version. I checked the directories where the files were being copied to verify that it worked and it appears that they successfully copied without issue. Unfortunately, since I didn't run into any problems until finding that it just didn't work, I don't have many other details that might help shed some light on this. I'm crossing my fingers though and hoping that someone else might have had some experience with this. Thanks in advance.   I'm redesigning the website for my academic library and am examining other sites to determine to identify the technologies used. Things like: Web frameworks Javascript frameworks Server-side technology Content management system Now I've had some real success in Firefox using plugins like Wappalyzer, Firebug, and the DOM Inspector. But some sites just don't display any of the info. I'm looking for using these tools, especially it seems it an enterprise-level CMS is being used. Does anyone know of any other tools to detect this kind of data? Also with Firebug & the DOM Inspector, there is a lot of info. displayed and I wondered if there was a way to derive the presence of server-side technologies, CMS's, etc. within certain elements of a web page?   Use case: When I install Ubuntu on another computer, I need to: install all the packages that I use; make some config changes; svn checkout some projects; git clone some projects; setup .ssh/config; download a custom Eclipse build; download some additional Eclipse plugins; make many other tweaks. So, I want to run a script, like sudo install-everything-needed, that would execute these predefined actions. Is there any package that provides the backbone for such system?

• Improve efficiency of web building setup and processes - Wordpress on Mac

  Can anyone see any ways in which I can improve my speed and efficiency with the following setup? Or if there are any obvious holes in my building process? This is for building Wordpress websites on Mac: 1) I have a standard Wordpress setup that I work from which includes various plugins that I tend to use across all setups - thus cutting out the step of having to download them all the time! 2) My standard WP files are copied into a Dropbox folder - thus creating backups of the files. 3) I then open up MAMP and setup a local version. 4) I open up Coda and setup the FTP details so files can be uploaded to the live domain by using the publish button. If anyone has any advice on how to improve this process then please let me know!

• tail-like view on HTML logfiles

  I'm working on an application that creates HTML log files. I'm tired of having to manually reload and scroll to the bottom in the browser to see the latest entries. A solution that does not really satisfy me is using the Firefox plugins ReloadEvery and ScrollyFox. In many situations reloading frequency and scrolling speed are just to slow. Of course I could actually use tail, but I would prefer a rendered HTML page. Do you have any suggestions? Firefox extensions are preferred, but any other tip is appreciated, too.

• Why doesn't compiz show the outline when I use the grid?

  When I drag windows, instead of getting an outline like I would on a clean install, I get nothing, so I don't know what function the plugin will use before releasing the mouse, other than what I guess it will do. Is there something known to cause this to happen, and what can I do to get back the outline? (NB: I have the outline enabled in the plugin settings, so please do not ask me to enable it :D (lol)!) EDIT: Now I have reinstalled the compiz plugins cleanly and still noting :(. What can I do?

  I have been trying to get Unity to work in 3D and hardware wise there should be no problem. I have the 310.14 NVIDIA driver and am using a GTX660-Ti card.   Just out of curiosity, I want to know opensource tools or projects that can add some interesting features to indie games, preferably those that could only be found on big-budget games. EDIT: As suggested by The Communist Duck and Joe Wreschnig, I'm putting the examples as answers. EDIT 2: Please do not post tools like PyGame, Inkscape, Gimp, Audacity, Slick2D, Phys2D, Blender (except for interesting plugins) and the like. I know they are great tools/libraries and some would argue essential to develop good games, but I'm looking for more rare projects. Could be something really specific or niche, like generating realistic trees and plants, or realistic AI for animals.

• Best wiki engine to use?

  Hi, I'm looking to set up a wiki as a simple CMS for a resource page. Mostly just pdfs and word documents will be hosted, but the two main features I'm looking for is the ability to restrict pages based upon user privileges and for blog-style comments between the users. From what I've researched, mediawiki can easily do the first part with restricting users, but I haven't had much luck finding any plugins for comments. I'm trying to avoid the discussion style pages from wikipedia, and have more of a comments just under the article. So far I'm leaning towards trying Tiki out, any other recommendations?

• Drupal accounts with dead addresses: how to de-activate?

  Hi, on my drupal website, there are a lot of users with an invalid email address. I know because, either they have never logged in or their mails bounce. But I have to check manually, which is not good. When a user signs up with an email address, they receive a confirmation email. Is there a way to automatically disable an account if the user does not log in within the first day after receiving this confirmation mail? Alternatively, it would be OK to keep the accounts disabled until the user clicks a link on the confirmation mail. Are there plugins or settings in Drupal to do this?

  With Jason Lee's NetBake plugin (https://bitbucket.org/jdlee/netbake), when you've installed JRuby and then the Asciidoctor gem, you're good to go to use Asciidoctor with NetBeans IDE. New Asciidoc files can be created, which have a Source view... ...and a Visual view. The current content of the text editor is parsed by the Asciidoctor gem and the resulting HTML is displayed in a JEditorPane: Awestruct support is also part of the NetBake plugin, with a new project type and other related features. An Options window is included for configuring the plugin: I've been in touch with Jason and we're discussing separating the Asciidoctor parts from the Awestruct parts and then putting them seperately as plugins on the NetBeans Plugin Portal.

  I am busy writing a WordPress plugin. Now most users have cache plugins installed, they cache the pages. I know also some webservers as nginx have php caching and whatnot. There are also things like memcached. Now I have to admit I do not know exactly how they work, if anyone have some good links on how they work I would be glad. Some links where it's explained simple, not to technical. Now the question. My plugin displays different statistics on posts, they are always different, will this break the caching of the page. To take is a step further, sometimes the statistics of the post needs updating, and there is a small javascript snippet added to the page. Now will these two action result in the page not caching, or am I ok.

• Translating error messages from an external API?

  If I am localizing a piece of software that uses an external API, how should I handle error messages that originate in this API? I do not control the API, I only consume it. The error responses are not very structured: some contain error codes, some contain verbose details in the text, others almost nothing. Some errors can be fixed by the user (incorrect configuration), some are caused by the external service (server overload), some could be caused by a bug in my software (of course, this would be very unlikely...). I would like to provide a smooth experience to my end-users, so they know what went wrong and what they can do to fix it. What is the best strategy to use here? (This is a generalization of a question from the WordPress Stack Exchange. I thought it would be worth re-asking here, because it is not limited to WordPress plugins.)

  So I recently installed Ubuntu on this computer, I just started using it today for the 2nd time, I needed to install some video plugins to use for the web and it asked me for a password. I do not remember ever setting a password during installation, and I am not asked for a password to login either. As far as I knew I never had a password before, is there a way to recover the user password from within ubuntu without entering into recovery mode? I do not see why I need to restart as I never need a password to start up the computer and log in...

  Our hosting company is complaining that both our Drupal and Wordpress websites running in a shared server are consuming too many CPU resources. The traffic for each site is not more than 100 users per day and, at a first glance, we don't have very many plugins/add-ons. Is there any tool or resource to analyse what is causing that high CPU load? Thanks Update: We decided to suspend our accounts while the problem was being debugged but still our hosting (Site5) said that they saw unacceptable activity on our sites so we had to move to a dedicated server... asked them several times to provide us with more information and they always came back saying that we had to purchase a higher account.   Possible Duplicate: Subdomain versus subdirectory We have two sites, one is mainly a portfolio site (built with Yii framework) and the other is a digital shop (built with open cart) where we sell plugins and themes. The url's look like www.mydomian.com and www.store.mydomain.com. But of these sites are in the same server. We use google analytics tools and have no problem getting traffic to our store. But we have very little to our portfolio site and we want to increase our Google ranking for this site. Assuming increased traffic to our site will increase our google ranking, we were thinking to use URl masking so the link will be www.mydomain.com/shop and this will load www.store.mydomain.com. Will this count as hits for our portfolio site? Because the .htaccess rules will ensure the subdomain is served. So I dont know if these hits will count on our store or our portfolio site...

• Can the overuse of custom taglibs disrupt the outsourcing of html designers?

  Yesterday me and a friend were talking about the overuse of custom taglibs! We create taglibs for everything! We create taglibs in order to wrap jQuery UI elements (tabs, button, etc), and other plugins elements as well. We often wrap them together in a single component. We use taglibs in a point that we almost have no pure html within the body tag. Our question is: is this a healthy habit??? Imagine two situations: 1) We hire an html designer and have the cost of a month for him to learn all this stuff. 2) We want to outsource the html development but no company would get our taglib library to learn, OR it become more expensive. We love taglibs as its been a lovely shortcut for javascipt development as we write it only once. What would be the best practices in this sense, and what would you suggest? We are looking for a future-proof solution (or an argument that agrees with ours).
