• Windows SBS 2003 Remote Desktop Problem

  Hi, I used to remote access the SBS 2003 server through RDC and it has been working all the time but now I am unable to connect to the server. Whenever I pressed the "Connect" button on the Remote Desktop Connection dialog, a dialog with messages like "Connecting to: xx.xx.xx.xx" and "Configuring remote session..." appeared and then disappeared quickly, leaving the Remote Desktop Connection dialog there. How to fix the problem? Is the any way to reinstall the Remote Desktop on the server. Thank you.

• How to effectively draw on desktop in C#?

  I want to draw directly on the desktop in C#. From searching a bit, I ended up using a Graphics object from the Desktop HDC (null). Then, I painted normally using this Graphics object. The problem is that my shapes get lost when any part of the screen is redrawn. I tried a While loop, but it actually ends up drawing as fast as the application can, which is not the update rate of the desktop. Normally, I would need to put my drawing code in a "OnPaint" event, but such thing does not exist for the desktop. How would I do it?   I am trying to monitor an application available on remote machine using VisualVM & Visual GC. I have enabled the jmxremote on the remote side as follows: -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=8888, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false, -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false While monitoring through VisualVM, everything runs fine but VisualGC doesn't displays any stats (getting Not Supported for this JVM error). While tried to monitor one local application, VisualGC runs fine... Got success with the remote app once started jstad on the remote jvm. Is this a known issue with VisualGC...? • Need help with executing and deleting remote bash script via a local bash script

  I am trying to create a bash script that will scp a script to a remote server, ssh (using an ssh key that is already installed) to the remote server, execute the uploaded script, and then delete the remote script when it is finished. I'm not clear how to run an ssh session inside a bash script. Here are the commands I use to do it from the command line: scp my_script.sh [email protected]:/usr/home/user/ ssh [email protected] >sh my_script.sh >rm myscript.sh >exit How do I script the ssh portion of my command list?   Hi All, Quick question - I run two linux boxes, one my own desktop and the other my VPS. For security reasons on the VPS end I opted for socket connections to MySQL (/var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock). I know I can tunnel like this: ssh -L 3307:127.0.0.1:3306 [email protected] if I set up the remote sql server to listen on some port, but what I want to know is can I do something like: ssh -L /path/to/myremotesqlserver.sock:/var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock thereby tunnelling two sockets, as opposed to two ports? A perfectly acceptable solution would also be to forward a local port to the remote socket file, but where possible I'm trying not to have tcp servers running on the remote box. • Setup Linksys 3200 remote access

  I'm trying to setup remote access for my linksys 3200 so that I can configure it through the WAN port. I have turned on remote access, however when I try to connect I get a 404 error. The settings I have are: When I try to access xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9999 I just get a 404 error. I have allowed RDP access to a computer behind the router and this works fine on the same IP address. Any idea's on what else I have to do to allow remote management access? UPDATE: I tried changing the port to 80 and it works. Change it back to any other number and it doesn't work. Modem is setup with a DMZ to the router's IP. Why does it only work on port 80? BTW I can't use port 80 because there is a website hosted behind the router.

  I'm trying to enable permissions for a user on a Windows7 machine to use the built in feature called "Offer Remote Assistance" or "Windows Remote Assistance". This feature works fine if the user is added to the "domain admins" security group, but for security reasons, I cannot leave him in that group. This is within a SBS2003 Domain. I have added the user and also a group that he is apart of to the Small Business Server Remote Assistance Policy, after following some documentation I was able to find, but this has not worked. • Expired Windows Server 2008 trial remote activation

  I have a remote server which has an expired license. I can't currently add the new license because of a licensing server error so I need to reboot the machine. My question is will I be able to remote desktop onto the machine and apply the new license or do I have to be physically at the server. I know an activation wizard usually appears and doesn't let you go any further but does this same wizard appear over remote desktop? I don't really want to reboot the machine only for it to not come up again.

I am trying to remote connect to the MySQL server however get the simple error "Can't connect to MySQL server on {IP}" I have already done the follow: * commented out the bind-address within the /etc/mysql/my.cnf * commented out skip-external-locking within the same my.cnf * "ufw allow mysql" * "iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT" * setup an AZURE endpoint for mysql * "sudo netstat -lpn | grep 3306" does indeed show mysql LISTENING * "GRANT ALL ON *.* TO remote@'%' IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; * "GRANT ALL ON *.* TO remote@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; * "/etc/init.d/mysql restart" * I can connect via SSH tunneling, but not without it * I have spun up an identical ubuntu 13.04 server on rackspace and SUCCESSFULLY connected using the same procedures outlined here. NONE of the above works on my azure server however. I thought the creation of an endpoint would work, but no luck. Any help please? Is there something I'm missing entirely?

• Should I get a desktop PC if I will move abroad

  Hello, This is probably a bit of a personal opinion style question - should I buy a desktop or a laptop? Generally I would prefer a desktop, since it's generally cheaper for the same specs, but it's about 50% likely that I will have to move to Japan (from UK) for a couple of years in two years or so. I have never heard of anyone travelling with a desktop - is it even possible without getting it destroyed? If anyone have experience in this area, could you suggest me if It's better to choose a laptop just for this reason? I don't really care about mobility on daily basis that much as I already have a netbook. Thanks for all the help and sorry if it's a bit off topic.

• Can't connect disk management to remote XP PC from local Win7/Server 2008

  Scenario as follows: support technicians using Windows 7 PC's or Server 2008 terminal server are unable to connect Disk Management MMC snap in to a remote PC when the remote device is running Windows XP. "Disk management could not start Virtual Disk Service (VDS) on ". This can happen if the remote computer does not support VDS, or if a connection cannot be established because it was blocked by Windows Firewall." Connecting from another XP machine or 2003 server to the same XP machines works fine. Even connecting from XP/2003 to the Win7 or 2008 server works fine. Windows firewall disabled on all devices. I'm guessing this is something to do with the fact that XP uses logical disk manager service whereas Win7/2008 use Virtual disk manager service. But there doesn't seem to be any way to use logical disk manager service from 7/2008 to connect to XP...

I would expect such an application to have these features: choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record zoom in an area, and camera move save the recorded movie to a compressed format have basic editing tools have the mouse highlighting feature (either a sonar blip or something similar) highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does) So the question is: Which free desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend on windows? It doesn't have to have all those features, just tell me your favorable experiences. Please suggest tools that would do mouse/keys/areas highlight tricks. I'm open to commercial software too, but I would prefer a free one. Thank you!

• Windows 7: Open File - Security Warning box appears for every app on the desktop

  Whenever I double-click to open an executable on the desktop (.exe, .bat, etc.), or a shortcut on the desktop that points to an executable, the "Security Warning" pops up and asks me "Are you really sure you want to open that? Stuff from the Internet is dangerous!" I don't usually mind this warning and don't want to disable it globally, but now I'm getting it for any executable on the desktop, even ones that I didn't download from the Web and don't have the Mark of the Web alternate data stream. (That is, streams -d * shouldn't and doesn't help.) This started fairly recently, but I can't really point to anything I did that triggered it. It only occurs in one user account on the machine; the other account doesn't have this problem. Running System Restore didn't help. How can I fix the problem and make the pop-up warning appear only when it's supposed to?

• Howto print from dumb terminals with local print server and remote hosted RDP

  We have essentially a remote office with about 5 dumb terminals. The terminals are connecting to our office directly over a wireless link. What I want to do is connect all their printers onto a print server. But since the remote office is not actually allowed to see our LAN (since they are actually another company) we don't want a full on open VPN tunnel set up. Naturally the RDP traffic passes through a firewall. Is there an easy way to set up the RDP server so that it can see a print server on a remote LAN?

We are looking at approximately 1000 remote PC's that our organisation owns, geographically scattered and with varying bandwidths available from a central site. The PC's are not manned, they are used as server machines. The tool needs to have some scripting facilities too. The tool needs to be able to push software to the remote site in an automated way.   I have a bunch of remote computers that must be updated to the most recent packages for RedHat 4 and RedHat 5. I am using mrepo to mirror the RHN packages, however the remote computers do not have an internet connection. Because of this I have to update the mirror server that is part of the remote computers with a dvd. This is to cut down shipping costs to just a dvd. I am attempting to script this so I can fit all of the new packages on a CD or a DVD. I send updates about once or twice a month depending on package requirements. So my question is, is their a good method to do this so that the only things transferred are the new packages? I wish I could just use rsync. Thanks.

• Notepad Automatically Launches Upon Boot Up of my Windows 7 64-Bit Desktop PC

  Around 12 months ago, When my Windows 7 PC boots up, Notepad started to appear automatically on the desktop (as a duplicate ie one on top of the other), both displaying the same writing inside, and the name of the Notepad was: desktop-Notepad. [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787 I cant remember the exact details as its been so long now but a friend told me, this was due to a "hidden attribute" belonging to notepad becoming "unhidden"and therefore showing itself on the desktop at startup. He showed me a series of steps to either hide the attribute again or to delete it ( telling me that upon restart of my computer it would be recreated/regenerated.) I did indeed follow his guidance however after trying to hide it or delete it (it was never recreated after restart which supposedly it should have done) One notepad still is autolaunched with the text as shown above everytime I startup my PC. As I found this forum I thought I might try again for a solution to prevent notepad from launching. Thankyou

  I want to create a custom Xmonad session that loads an .xsession script in my home folder. This is the original file I copied. This one works: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=xmonad Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession This is my modified file, xmonad-custom.desktop. When I logout, then login choosing this "xmonad-custom", the screen just flashes and sends me back to the ubuntu login screen (as if it briefly logs in and out of the session): [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Name=XMonad Custom Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/{username}/.xsession Icon=xmonad.png Type=XSession X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gdm I also tried without the last line. • Windows 7 Computer Maintenance - Restore removed Desktop Shortcuts

  I'm aware about the inbuilt nightmate 'tool' of Microsofts which is making every network administrators job a nightmare (if left turned on). In short it'll happily delete every desktop shortcut to a network resource. We have it disabled by default. My question is related to recovering these shortcuts, Windows doesn't seem to dump them into the Recycle Bin and although you can 'restore previous versions' of the Desktop folder, you are unable to do it with the user logged in... Rather a problem if you only have the 1 user account. We have a user who (although the 'Computer Maintenance' tool is turned off) had it come up in 'Action Centre' and chose to run it. I've been unable to reproduce it, but the tool has certainly run (and removed 24 shortcuts from her desktop) although it is still saying 'Windows is not checking your system for maintenance problems'. ?! Very fustrating! Any ideas if these shortcuts are backed up/moved elsewhere so i can easily find and restore them?

• Laptop connected to external monitor results in desktop overflow

  I have a laptop (MSi FX600) connected to an external monitor (Toshiba 19AV500U) with the screen resolution set to the monitors recommended setting of 1440x900. The problem is the desktop is overflowing the display, meaning all edges of the desktop are cut off, so I cannot see the close, minimize buttons on the top and I only see half of the taskbar at the bottom. I have tried many different resolutions but none of them solve the problem. I have had this same problem when connecting to other external monitors in the past, but not all of them, it seems to be fairly random. I have tried to find a way to manually adjust the resolution but I cannot see a way to do this in my settings. All windows updates are up to date, I am connecting through an HDMI cable and I have it set to display only on the external monitor and not extended desktop.

  We have a php application running on Linux which sends emails to there users. Currently its setup like php.ini is configured to send via local sendmail server but we have separate mail server for our organization for this domain. I want to send the php application emails via that remote smtp server so these emails can have the correct SPF records and sign via DKIM. But I could not see such option in php.ini to specify the remote host address to forward emails to that, its for windows only. I saw some post which suggest phpMailer but I could not find how to configure that so all our php application could send via our remote SMTP.

• IIS web service responds on server, not from remote client

  I have installed a web service on a server running IIS (v6, as far as I can tell). There is another service installed, which responds as expected. My service responds correctly when a browser is pointed to localhost, but there is no response when a remote client tries to query the service. Fiddler on the remote client simply reports a timeout. Wireshark on the remote client shows no response at all from the server, no NACK, nothing. Wireshark on the server detects no query at the relevant port (the service is installed on port 8080). There are no relevant entries in the event viewer. Obviously there is some issue of permissions or authentication. I have tried to compare my service to the service that works, but I have not been able to locate relevant parameters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
