• vihostupdate, many patches at once

  Hi, i have ESXi 4.0 installed so i want to install all patch bundles available using vihostupdate.pl script from vm perl sdk. I can install it by typing: vihostupdate.pl -server 192.168.1.177 -b "C:\Documents and Settings\dawids\Pulpit\patche\ESXi-4.0.0-update01.zip" -i then patch 2,3 etc. But I would like to install them all at once, is there such possibility? Maybe there is possible to use vihostupdate patch1 then vihostupdate patch2... and after all patching reboot instead rebooting after 1 patch bundle. How is it working?

  So, I am new to Applescript editor and I am trying to write code to automatically update computers. For some odd reason I can not seem to get Adobe to update successfully. I tried using Accessibility Inspector, but nothing appeared like AXButton So is there even a way of writing code for Adobe when there is not an AXButton option? • Secure Server Distro

  Hello, I have a root-server (i7/24GB/1TB) running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as my OS. After some security audits (OpenVAS, Retina etc) I see that Ubuntu isn't the most secure system for a semi-corporate environment. Its updated from many sources, ofc from the Ubuntu security repo too. But nevertheless I could exploit my OpenSSL install with an exploit from August/September. There are some critical updates needed which Ubuntu does not provide. I was using Debian and Ubuntu for almost 5 years but now I doubt. What distro is secure and up to date from your point of view? How can I make the server more secure? Outsourcing of every software-module to a VM? I am not new to server-hardening, my packages are up to date I read Ubuntu Security Notices and I have no unneeded services installed on my server. • Is there anyway to stop Windows 8 from restarting for an update?

  My Windows 8 machine is going to restart shortly... I have tried a few techniques such as shutdown /a which is not having much luck. Short of pausing the Windows Update service, is there anyway to stop this restart from happening? ---update--- Looks like the "restart" is all talk and no action! The time has gone and I am presented with this: So, it goes along with the top answer here (which I shall shortly accept) --- update again--- It did reset!!! My battery went critical and it turned itself off, I turned it back on (out of suspend) when it was plugged in, I logged in and the first thing it did was automatically restart - closing my open tabs in Chrome :( Oh well...

  What's the best way to keep packages up-to-date (ie with the last security fixes) without worried about major version update ? For instance, apache2 for squeezeis is 2.2.16 (https://packages.debian.org/source/squeeze/apache2) However, last apache2 version for the 2.2.x branch is 2.2.27 Test repository can't be used since they use the 2.4.x versions and I'd like to stick on the 2.2.x (to avoid migration issues) How would you handle this situation and how can I update to 2.2.27 ?

• Automatic driver search & update on Windows?

  I have a Dell laptop issued by my employer, and I always find it a real pain to search for, download and maintain their drivers. It baffles me that there does not seem to be a nice way (product, website, ...) to just download the stuff you need, without hassle. The same goes for the other Windows based laptops in my direct environment. Are there any (preferably free) automated solutions available? Or do you have a nice workflow - other than searching the manufacturers website - to help smoothing this process?

• Is it important to reboot Linux after a kernel update?

  I have a few production Fedora and Debian webservers that host our sites as well as user shell accounts (used for git vcs work, some screen+irssi sessions, etc). Occasionally a new kernel update will come down the pipeline in yum/apt-get, and I was wondering if most of the fixes are severe enough to warrant a reboot, or if I can apply the fixes sans reboot. Our main development server currently has 213 days of uptime, and I wasn't sure if it was insecure to run such an older kernel.

• X200 Tablet notebook won't start after BIOS Update

  I have LENOVO X200 Tablet and I ran the BIOS Update and the computer won't start after the BIOS update. When I ran the BIOS update utility it ran everything fine and asked to restart the computer but it wont start screen is blank. I unplugged the power and took of the battery and put them back and still not starting. Now it has [Power On] indicator light on and screen is not starting. I tried pressing F1 button while trying to start the computer but it doesn't do react to anything. Please help how I can start my Tablet. The update utility is http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-70651 Does any body know if X200 have any kind of hardware switch to reset the BIOS or any thing? • Why does HP Update at remote system trigger RDP printing at local system?

  This is obscure. When connected with RDP to another system that has HP Update installed on it, either directly running the HP Update or having the notification pop up to ask if you want to run HP Update causes the local system to try to print something to peculiarly-chosen-local-printer. Case 1: Desktop Win 7 Ult system RDP connected to HP Laptop Win 7 Ult system. When HP Update runs on the laptop a dialog for XPS Writer Save As... appears on Desktop system. Even if you put in a name, nothing gets generated and the dialog repeats. And repeats. Until you (a) close the RDP connection and (b) clean out the queued entries. If the HP Update pops up the request to run the update and you are not at the desk when this happens, there can be dozens of queued requests for this bogus printing. NOTE: the XPS Writer is not selected as a default printer on either system. Case 2: (Different) HP Laptop Win 7 Ult system RDP connected to XP Pro "brand X" desktop system but with HP printer drivers installed. If the request to run HP Update notification pops on the XP system, dozens of attempts to print, in this case to a Versa Check Printer driver, are queued. Dismissing the HP request, closing RDP, and cleaning out the queue are required to stop this. NOTE: the Versa Check Writer is not selected as a default printer on either system. THE QUESTION: What the heck is going on here? Some kind of scripting or COM activity that is misdirected?

  Yesterday on a computer of a friend a strange thing happened. after booting the ports fo http, https and ftp are closed but e-mail is still working. in the control panel the windows firewall seems active even if he tries to deactivate it. I have a suspision that it is the faul of norton internet security 2010, we have tried to uninstall it, but the uninstallation did not work. when using the removal tool from symantec it just goes to 23% and then it crashes. the process ccSvcHst.exe is still running. How can I safely remove the rest of Norton Internet Security? Edit: Norton Internet Security 2010 is sucesfully removed, but still no connectivity...

• Do I need to update some of my Debian Squeeze software?

  I have installed Debian 6, and LAMP stack from squeeze repository (default). After upgrading Apache 2.2.16 from unstable repository to 2.2.22, thanks to this post - how to upgrade already installed apache2 on debian (lenny) I'm thinking to upgrade all other software packages that I've previously installd from squeeze repository. Should I upgrade them to the ones from unstable repository? Should I upgrade all of them or just selected ones? • AD reset user passwords for a security group

  I'm not quite sure if this is possible or not, but I need to force a certain security group's users to have their passwords expire so they'll be forced to change them on next login. The reason for this is because I applied a FGPP (password policy) to this particular group in order to enforce strong passwords. Well, many users have really weak passwords and they won't be changed unless they're forced. Is there a way to do this without forcing everyone to a single password?

  I just restarted my laptop to finish installing a Windows update and now it is stuck on please wait. I have tried a system restore but there is only one restore point in the list and it does not work for some reason... I also tried to do a refresh but it asks me for media. I plug in the usb I used to install windows 8 a while and go and says that the media failed to load. I'm kind of stuck on options now. I can't boot and I can't restore and it seems I cant format either! Is there anything anything else I can do to get things going?! I'm running Windows 8 on a dell xps 14 ultrabook. Win 8 is installed on an msata drive and booting using EFi.

  I've been asked to update some computers running Windows XP (without any service packs) to Windows XP SP3. The computers don't have an internet connection (only a small intranet) and have never been updated since first install. Do I need to install SP1a first, then SP2, then SP3, or can I install SP3 immediately? And where do I find the right files, that don't require an internet connection during installation? I researched on how to do that, like changing host files, but none of them worked for me. • Debian/Ubuntu: Enabling "dist-upgrade" behavior for unattended-upgrades?

  We've got a customized distribution of Ubuntu, a repository with some custom packages and we run unattended-upgrades on a number of systems. What we want to be able to do is supply an update of one of our packages which might have a new dependency which is not yet installed. I understand apt normally prevents that from happening automatically, and using dist-upgrade would permit it. How can I get that behavior so our unattended upgrades work the same way? Ideally we'd only want new packages installed if one of our packages causes it to be needed (either as a direct dependency or a child, etc.) Should I be aware of any potential problems or increased risk of breakage. The systems are generally not easily accessed via the console so anything causing a problem requiring manual intervention would be very bad!

• Can I Exit my SSH Client After Starting an Update?

  I just ran sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade through PuTTY (SSH Client) on my Laptop, which was directed at my fresh Ubuntu server. Unfortunately I just realized I need to be out of the house with my Laptop and I'm worried that by exiting my SSH client or having my Laptop disconnect form the internet that the server won't continue updating! What will happen if I turn my Laptop off now that the server is updating?!

• Reinstall default apps on Galaxy S3 before updating to Jelly Bean [migrated]

  I want to update my Galaxy S3 to Jelly Bean but after downloading the firmware using Kies, it starts updating, but then it stops with a "dead" Android with a red triangle icon. I think it's because I have removed some default apps like ChatOn and Yahoo widgets. Is there any way to get them back or to install the official Jelly Bean update without a factory reset? I don't want to reinstall my apps again and lose my settings each time I need to update the OS (I also don't want bloatware apps that are pre-installed). Any ideas?

• Logins with only HTTP - are they as insecure as I'm thinking?

  Recently I was thinking about how websites like gmail and amazon use HTTPS during the login process when accessing your account. This makes sense, obviously, since you're typing in your account username and password and you would want that to be secure. However, on Facebook, among countless other websites, their logins are done with simple HTTP. Doesn't that mean that my login name and password are completely unencrypted? Which, even worse, means that all those people who login to their facebooks (or similar sites) at a wifi hotspot in public are susceptible to anyone getting their credentials using a simple packet sniffer (or something similar)? Is it really that easy? Or am I misunderstanding internet security? I'm a software engineer working on some web related stuff, and although at the current time I'm not too involved with the security aspect of our software, I knew I should probably know the answer to this question, since it's extremely fundamental to website security. Thanks!

• How to auto-update a website mirror with exceptions to certain pages?

  I'm currently mirroring a website on my server. The site itself is rarely updated, but it is updated enough that info can become outdated quickly. I mirrored it first with wget, and this worked fine, but I made some changes: The original index.html used frames, but the site also provides a main.html which is essentially index.html but without frames. I deleted index.html and renamed main.html. I did not want to mirror the webchat, blog or forum, so I deleted those files and directories and made directories "blogs" "forum" and "chat" and placed a php redirect in each of those, redirecting visitors to the orignal site. I'd like to auto-update the mirror (maybe once every 24-72 hours), but preserve the changes I made. Is this possible? How would I go about doing it? I am completely clueless as to how. Thanks for any and all help! :)
