Can one have multiple name servers that don't all belong to the same TLD/provider?

In light of the GoDaddy outage we updated our name server list for our domain to include an additional name server provider. The list looks something like this: ns61.domaincontrol.com ns54.domaincontrol.com ns1.dreamhost.com ns2.dreamhost.com Both Godaddy and Dreamhost have zone entries to handle the A and MX records. The idea is that if one provider goes out the other will be a fall-back. However, when I tested my config with http://www.intodns.com/ I am getting a warning about SOA serials not being agreed. Have I misunderstood some fundamentals in name-server config? What can I do to prevent future problems?

AWS forwarding email to a gmail account

So I registered a domain name. I then set up a static webpage using aws (S3 and Rout53). Now what I want to do is forward any email I get from that custom domain name to a personal email address I have set up. I can't seem to figure out how to do this. I have these record sets already: A NS SOA CNAME I believe I have to set up an MX record but not sure how. say I have the custom domain [email protected] and I want to redirect all email to [email protected]. The personal email account is a gmail (google accounts) email address. Thanks.

named-checkzone reports 'ns.example.com.ns' has no address records (A or AAAA)

The first thing I see wrong is that its a recursion problem. But I'm not sure where the problems lie in my reverse lookup file. ns should report back as ns.example.com but instead getting ns.example.com.ns. Of course it wouldn't find any entries for that name because there isn't one, nor is it supposed to. Here's my reverse file: $TTL 86400 @ IN SOA ns.example.com root.example.com. ( 16071990 ; Serial 3600 ; Refresh 1800 ; Retry 604800 ; Expire 86400 ; Minimum TTL ) @ IN NS ns.example.com It's not extraordinarily complicated. What my question is, what other files affect the output for named-checkzone when checking a name against the revers file?

Setup a DNS wilcard and MX record in the same zone

I'd like to know how to configure my DNS to be able to use a wildcard for my domain and an MX record together. Here is what I've done: @ IN SOA dns100.ovh.net. tech.ovh.net. (2012052100 86400 3600 3600000 300) IN NS ns100.ovh.net. IN NS dns100.ovh.net. IN MX 1 mail.gestixi.com. IN A 91.121.39.211 * IN CNAME gestixi.com. www IN CNAME gestixi.com. The problem is that when I check my DNS, I get this error: MX records shall not point to an alias defined by a CNAME Because of this error, it look like I can't send mails from some internet providers.

How can i control how much Authority RRs a DNS answer returns ?

Hello, i quite don't understand Authority RRs. Using dig to resolve some random A records, my caching DNS server sometimes also return Authority RRs and sometimes not. The number and the type of the returned Authority RRs also vary a lot. What does control whether Authority RRs are returned or not on a standard client query ? Is it a client or server setting ? What does control how many Authoriy RRs are returned ? What does control of the type of the Authority RRs records returned ? Sometimes it's multiple NS, sometimes it's a SOA. It's also often comes with Additional RRs of type A about the Authority RRs NS returned. I'm really looking for a RFC or kind of describing this. Thanks.

PowerDNS, updating serial

I recently wrote script that automatically enteres new Sub Domain records into the PDS mySql database. Now if I enter the entry mannually using Zone Admin my sub domain works 100%. Now if I add it using a simply SQL insert string eg "insert into records (domain_id, name,type,content,ttl,prio) values("; it does not work, I got told that I need to update the SOA serial which I do but it just does not want to take effect. I do the following date(Ymd)."01" and this does not work, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Hi All I use Gradwell.com to provide secondary DNS but I keep getting e-mails along the lines of the following saying that it's not working: You have asked us to provide a secondary DNS service for the following domain(s) Unfortunately, the primary DNS server(s) you specified are not permitting the necessary zone transfers from our servers, or they are not answering "SOA" queries for your domain correctly. I have gone through the support procedure and they weren't that helpful. They have suggested the following: Our secondline team have suggested setting the AXFR to use anouther machine. This will ensure that the transfer is not locked down to one machine and should allow any machine to make the request I don't really know what AFXR is and I only have 1 production machine so I can't set the AFXR to use another one! In previous support correspondence we confirmed that I am allowing transfers to the correct IP and that I have the correct ports open on the firewall. I am running Windows Server 2003. What can I do to try and get these zone transfers working? Thanks

When they're different, we need to change the DNS records. When I try to point my blog to my domain name, I came to know about the various types of DNS records - A Records, AAA Records, MX Records, CNAME Records, NS Records, TXT Records, SRV Records, SOA Records, etc. I searched on Google, but would like to know more about these deeply. How do the domain name records work? Is there any difference between NS record and other records in the way they work? Where should the NS record point to when using A record, CNAME record and MX record?

IPV6 causing issue with DNS

I have set up an 'internal' DNS at my work, basically we have ourdomain.com that is for internet, email etc and I have created on one of our linux network servers (debian) a DNS using bind9 with the domain ourdomain.inc. So based on my files below and the symptoms I'm describing; what effect could IPV6 be having on my setup? What can I do to fix this? I assume it is not actually the IPV6 causing the issue, but rather something in my setup. However, periodically (couple of times a day at least), I loose the ability to ping the svn.domain.inc (and all others defined under the internal DNS). What seem to fix the issue temporarily is to disable IPV6 on the network adapter of the client machine and then re-enable it. Then it works for a bit but will always fail again. And i expect a new domain name. So i have addded a new zone called hello.com and checked SOA server (P) is one.hello.local. then added a new host called one, full name is one.hello.com, ip address 192.168.7.3(my address in router) and then add a alias(CNAME) www, full name is www.hello.com, FQDN i choose the host i added before (one.hello.com) i expected that when i type the public ip in browser, can it be changed to domain name automatically. if not set host value www.hello.com, use public ip i can see the web however, after set up host value www.hello.com, browser show bad request invalid hostname

Google Cloud DNS and DNSSEC?

Since Google Cloud DNS does not currently support the record types for DNSSEC, is there any way to begin implementation of DNSSEC using TXT records? If I were using Google Cloud DNS, which I am, and they currently only support record types which include SOA, A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, SPF, SRV, PTR and TXT: am I able to do it while constricted to these record types? Or do I have to wait until support is hard-coded into the service? I am just wondering because I would really like to ensure absolute integrity for my company so that I only convey realness in it's purity. =D

domain works randomly

Hi, I have problem with configuring bind9 on debian (lenny) server. Generaly speaking everything is working ok but sometimes I get 404 on few domains (eg. 4stopnie.com but after few refreshes in browser site loads) or I can't validate site with validator.w3.org (error '500 Can't connect to 4stopnie.com:80 (Bad hostname '4stopnie.com')'). Domains were moved from other server. After moving I changed serial number in zone file. $ttl 600 @ IN SOA ns.wpoznaniu.info. xxx.4stopnie.com. Looking for good open source proxy server software. Preferably for a Windows server based machine. Need it primarily for testing my applications connectivity in a proxy scenario. So something that is dead easy to setup and configure. The proxy will run locally on my LAN, and I want it to emulate as close as possible the type of proxy you might find in corporate networks, because I'm testing an SOA system. Will not be used for its real intended purposes, so scalability is not a huge concern. Thank you

Extended JMS Support

In a previous post I discussed the real time JMS integration we added in FW4.1 and also as patches for FW2.2. There are some additional aspects of this integration I did not mention which may be of interest: JMS Topic Support - In the post I concentrated on talking about JMS Queue support but failed to mention that the MDB and outgoing real time JMS also supports JMS Topics. JMS Queues are typically used for point to point decoupled integration and JMS Topics are used for hub integration that uses Publish and Subscribe. JMS Selector Support - By default the MDB will process every message from a JMS resource (Queue or Topic). If you want to alter this behaviour to selectively filter JMS messages then you can use JMS Selectors to specify the conditions for the MDB to selectively process JMS messages based upon conditions. JMS Selectors allow filters to be specified on elements in the JMS Header and JMS Message Properties using SQL like syntax. Note: JMS Selectors do not support filters on the body elements. JMS Header Support - It is possible to place custom information in the JMS Header and JMS Message Properties for outgoing messages (so that other applications can use JMS selectors if necessary as well). This is only available when installing Patches 11888040 (FW4.1) and 11850795 (FW2.2). These facilities coupled with the JMS facilities described in the previous posts gives the product integration capabilities in JMS which can be used with configuration rather than coding. Of course, the JMS facility I have described can also be used in conjunction with SOA Suite to provide greater levels of traceability and management.

The latest series of ArchBeat podcast programs grew out of another virtual meet-up, held on March 11. As with previous meet-ups, I sent out a general invitation to the roster of previous ArchBeat panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever topic comes up. For this event, Oracle ACE Directors Mike van Alst and Jordan Braunstein showed up, along with Oracle product manager Jeff Davies. The result was an impressive and wide-ranging discussion on the evolution of Enterprise Architecture, the role of technology in EA, the impact of social computing, and challenge of having three generations of IT people at work in the enterprise – each with different perspectives on technology. Mike, Jordan, and Jeff talked for more than an hour, and the conversation was so good that slicing and dicing it to meet the time constraints for these podcasts has been a challenge.
