• Can I make a business in teaching home users Ubuntu [on hold]

  I was thinking about a way to bring Ubuntu to the bigger public, since it has great advantages for people in the lower income class that only use a PC for basic usage. They pay for a windows licence without actually needing windows because 95% of what they do is in a browser and the other 5% is typing a word document or making a simpel Excel sheet. So for these people something like Ubuntu is ideal, they can prolong the life of their old PC or laptop with Ubuntu and thus saving extra money. And as we all know, saving money is not only interesting for the lowest of income but for most of us. But when I talk to people they don't want to use Ubuntu because they know Windows and they don't know this, they'll complain about having to adapt to windows 8 but adapting to Ubuntu seems a bridge too far. But what if someone in the neighborhood gave simple Ubuntu courses. Teaching people about Ubuntu, stuff like: What is an OS What is Ubuntu How do I obtain Ubuntu How do I install Ubuntu How do I set up my email in Ubuntu How do I make a text document in Ubuntu How do I update my facebook wall in Ubuntu ... Simple basic PC usage, but within Ubuntu. But as much as I would like to work for free all day, I can't do this for free for people outside of my social circle. So I was wondering if it is possible to make a business and make money with giving Ubuntu courses, or are their steps to be taken before this is possible. However... Do I need an Ubuntu or Canonical license? Do I need to get a certificate? Do I have to make some kind of deal or contract with Canonical? Just to be clear this is all just an idea in my head at this point, I'm just gathering information. I'm not a teacher at a school, just a programmer that is thinking about options in life. • Java and .NET cost of use [on hold]

  I work with .NET technology stack for about 4 years. I am learning and enjoy working with ASP MVC framework and I never did anything serious in other languages. This is not the question like what is better (I read all similar questions). What interest me is the cost of switching. For example: If you are about to start a start-up company today and you are in my situation not too much money, some good idea that you think others will use and have a knowledge of .NET. In my head I have a few questions that I can't answer and I know that somebody with experience can: 1) Java & .NET hosting. Suppose shared hosting is not good enough anymore, your site has grown and you need more resources. How much Java services is cheaper compared to .NET? 2) I didn't follow hype about ORACLE will kill java long time. Does oracle show interest in investing in java. I mean is is safe to bet on java as a technology when starting start-up (basically did oracle show some will to destroy java platform)? 3) I am not sure what I am asking here. When you use Java you can use JEEE stack or Java with third party stack (spring, hibernate, maven etc.). I saw a lot of project that work with second option if web application is not enterprise level but social networking site for example which stack is best pick? Summary of this question is is it safe to jump in to Java learn it and build product based on it. It's not too hard for me to learn it. But how much can I get from it.

• Customized Computer Science Degree - What other field would mesh well with computer science?

  So here's my situation: I have seven years of experience with web development. I can do PHP, MySQL, OOP, all of that stuff. I would like to make the argument that I have enough technical experience to go out in the real world and get a well-paying, full-time job if I were to drop out right now (I've had a number of job offers recently, and I have already gotten a lot of actual job experience), but I would like to stay in school and get a degree for a number of reasons ranging from the social aspects to the fact that I just want to have a BS in one thing or another as it seems to be important to have one for a lot of jobs, even when it doesn't have anything to do with the job. With that said, it makes little sense for me to major in Computer Science, because that would be like studying everything I already know. I don't want to major in something COMPLETELY different, because that would be contrary to my career goals. I am considering trying to find some interdisciplinary, customized degree of sorts that allows me to combine my current skills with a new education. I'm thinking maybe buisness or even psychology (interface design?). Could I get some ideas for what to major in and tips on who I might talk to? Thanks!

• SEO Blog Indexing : Dot Wordpress Versus a Registered Domain?

  I've used Wordpress for a few of my client's sites, mostly small businesses and ecommerce sites. I have found through Google Analytics as well as the All in One Webmaster plugin that when it comes to social media, using Wordpress is a surefire way of getting your site indexed by Google and occasionally Bing and Yahoo. Since I am a heavy WP user, I'd like to contribute by registering a dot Wordpress domain for my portfolio. When using a WP installation concurrently with a WP domain, e.g. myportfolio.wordpress.com, will the site be more or less likely to be indexed rather a generic myportfolio.com domain? I've seen mixed opinions where people seem to favor a WP domain for URL output where others say that it's a moot point, and that Google will not favor a WP domain over a dot com domain as long as your meta tags are updated and content is keyword optimized. I tend to disagree and believe a WP domian would more likely be indexed and output more URLs over an individual, laconic domain like myportfolio.com. Am I wrong? Thanks in advance!

  I am building a social network, and I need a simple internal search engine that will display a list of all website users starting with the ones that have the specific keyword in their username. So here is what i need: a search engine that will take a keyword. the search engine will open a new page with a list of all website users, displaying first the users that have the specific keyword in their username. display your username in the placeholder. • Why most people change from being a contractor to full time at my companies, but not the other way around?

  I have seen most people changed from being a contractor to being a full time employee, but not the other way around. And that happened in startups that had maybe 20% chance of IPO or being acquired, and another that had maybe a 50% chance. As far as I know, the rate (even for a 3 year experience graphics designer, or a programmer), can be $75 to $80 an hour. While a programmer with 15 years of experience may get $120,000 per year. So, the programmer with 15 years of programming experience earns $10,000 per month. At the same time, the programmer with 3 year of experience or the graphics designer will get $14,000 per month ($80 x 22 days x 8 hours). I know I have to buy my own insurance, but I can't imagine buying those for $4,000 each month... maybe $200, $300 at most. I probably need to pay Social Security (FICA) both way (myself and as self-employed = $210 x 2), but still, each month there will be extra $3,000 of income. So is the above calculation correct? But most often, I do see contractors wanting or becoming full time, but not full time employees becoming a contractor. Does somebody know what the reason is?

• Getting "Comment post not allowed (400)" when using Django Comments

  I'm going through a Django book and I seem to be stuck. The code base used in the book is .96 and I'm using 1.0 for my Django install. The portion I'm stuck at is related to Django comments (django.contrib.comments). When I submit my comments I get "Comment post not allowed (400) Why: Missing content_type or object_pk field". I've found the Django documentation to be a bit lacking in this area and I'm hoping to get some help. The comment box is displayed just fine, it's when I submit the comment that I get the above error (or security warning as it truly appears). • Calling Model Functions from a Library

  Hello all, I have turned a normal PHP class into a library so I can use it in Codeigniter as a library. I can load it and call the functions I need in that class. Here is that class to help with the question. However, there are quite a few points where I have to call functions in my class. These functions reside in the model that instantiated my class. How can I do this as currently normal calls don't work. • Mathematics for Computer Science Students

  To cut a long story short, I am a CS student that has received no formal Post-16 Maths education for years. Right now even my Algebra is extremely rusty and I have a couple of months to shape up my skills. I've got a couple of video lectures in my bookmarks, consisting of: Pre-Calculus Algebra Calculus Probability Introduction to Statistics Differential Equations Linear Algebra My aim as of today is to be able to read the CLRS book Introduction to Algorithms and be able to follow the Mathematical notation in that, as well as being able to confidently read and back-up any arguments written in Mathematical notation. Aside from these video lectures, can anyone recommend any good books to help teach someone wishing to go from a low-foundation level to a more advanced level of Mathematics? Just as a note, I've taken a first-year module in Analytical Modelling, so I understand some of the basic concepts of Discrete Mathematics. EDIT: Just a note to those that are looking to learn Linear Algebra using the Video Lectures I have posted up. Peteris Krumins' Blog contains a run-through of these lecture notes as well as his own commentary and lecture notes, an invaluable resource for those looking to follow the lectures too.

  I already have Java code to display and process data from a database. I would now like to implement the code as modules, and incorporate as a whole into a CMS system. The CMS MUST support Spring, Hibernate, etc. The CMS MUST not be GPL, and preferably open source (lGPL, BSD,etc). The CMS MUST have good documentation and support The CMS MUST be secure (safe from XSS and injection) and support different levels of authorizations, (built-in or module) The CMS MUST have good navigation and tab, (built-in or module) +1, for having a good ajax paginated table module to display data +1, for using ajax to change pages with support for bookmarks and history.back() +1, for using jquery or prototype +1, for being easy to deploy, and easy to add modules +1, for supporting dynamically add/remove and drag-dropping of modules Please recommend a CMS best for the job. Thank you! EDIT: I don't need blogs or wikis or etc. I just want a framework where I can display paginated lists and time series graphs and log files. I will also host some pages for configuration. All of these code are already implemented.

  Hello All, does anyone have a VBA code to create a bookmark into the first column of an MSWord table? Let's say I have a table looking like this .-----.----------------. . ref . Title . .-----.----------------. . 1 . Title 1 . .-----.----------------. . 2 . Title 2 . .-----.----------------. . foo . Title 3 . .-----.----------------. . bar . Title 4 . .-----.----------------. and I want a VBA code fragment that creates a bookmark named "T1_1" on the string "1" in row 2 / column 1, and bookmarks named "T1_2", "T1_foo" and "T1_bar" on the strings in the other cells of column 1. I don't mind to hardcode the prefix "T1" (and substitute for other tables each time). I don't mind to select tables before running the macro, I don't mind giving those cells a special format, and I don't mind to get a superfluous bookmark "T1_ref" from the first row - so the code doesn't need to distinguish between table title and table row. • Selectively allow unsafe html tags in Plone

  I'm searching for a way to put widgets from several services (PicasaWeb, Yahoo Pipes, Delicious bookmarks, etc.) on the community site I host on Plone (currently 3.2.1). I'm looking for a way to allow a group of users to use dangerous html tags. There are some ways I see, but I don't know how to implement those. One would be changing safe_html for the pages editors own (1). Another would be to allow those tags on some subtree (2). And yet another finding an equivalent of "static text portlet" that would display in the middle panel (3). We could then use some of the composite products (I stumbled upon Collage and CMFContentPanels), to include the unsafe content on other sites. My site has been ridden by advert bots, so I don't want to remove the filtering all together. I don't have an easy (no false positives) way of checking which users are bots, so deploying captcha now wouldn't help either. The question is: How to implement any of those solutions? (I already asked that on plone mailing list without an answer, so I thought I would give it another try here.)

• association of more than one model to a listview

  I have 3 Tables in my database. Each table has 3 fields each, excluding the ID field. out of which 2 fields are of type nvarchar. None of the tables are related. My ListView in the application helps the user to search my database, the search being incremental. The search includes the nvarchar fields of the 3 tables ie, 6 fields in total. Eg: PhoneBook: Name, PhoneNo Notes: Title, Content Bookmarks: Name, url I've the models generated for the 3 tables. Now the ListBox should display the Ph.Name, Title and the Bo.Name fields. ie, It should be bound to them. But they are from different models. I also should be able to perform CRUD operation on the item searched. How would i do that? P.S: Separate ViewModels are created for each Model which are used for their respective views for handling those tables individually. But this is an integrated view where the user should be able to search everything. Also please somebody suggest me a better Title for this question:)

• How can I introduce a regex action to match the first element in a Catalyst URI ?

  Background: I'm using a CRUD framework in Catalyst that auto-generates forms and lists for all tables in a given database. For example: /admin/list/person or /admin/add/person or /admin/edit/person/3 all dynamically generate pages or forms as appropriate for the table 'person'. (In other words, Admin.pm has actions edit, list, add, delete and so on that expect a table argument and possibly a row-identifying argument.) Question: In the particular application I'm building, the database will be used by multiple customers, so I want to introduce a URI scheme where the first element is the customer's identifier, followed by the administrative action/table etc: /cust1/admin/list/person /cust2/admin/add/person /cust2/admin/edit/person/3 This is for "branding" purposes, and also to ensure that bookmarks or URLs passed from one user to another do the expected thing. But I'm having a lot of trouble getting this to work. I would prefer not to have to modify the subs in the existing framework, so I've been trying variations on the following: sub customer : Regex('^(\w+)/(admin)$') { my ($self, $c, @args) = @_; #validation of captured arg snipped.. my $path = join('/', 'admin', @args); $c->request->path($path); $c->dispatcher->prepare_action($c); $c->forward($c->action, $c->req->args); } But it just will not behave. I've used regex matching actions many times, but putting one in the very first 'barrel' of a URI seems unusually traumatic. Any suggestions gratefully received.

  So, I've got this huge XML file (10MB and up) that I want to parse and I figured instead of using SimpleXML, I'd better use XMLReader. Since the performance should be way better, right? But since XMLReader doesn't work with XPath... The xml is like this: <root name="bookmarks"> * <dir name="A directory"> <link name="blablabla"> <dir name="Sub directory"> ... </dir> * </dir> * <link name="another link"> </root> With SimpleXML combined with Xpath, I would simple do like: $xml = simplexml_load_file('/xmlFile.xml'); $xml-xpath('/root[@name]/dir[@name="A directory"]/dir[@name="Sub directory"]'); Which is so simple. But how do I do this with just using XMLReader? Ps. I'm converting the resulting node to DOM/SimpleXML to get its inner contents. Like this: $node = $xr-expand(); $dom = new DomDocument(); $n = $dom-importNode($node, true); $dom-appendChild($n); $selectedRoot = simplexml_import_dom($dom); Is this ok? ... Thanks!

  I recently upgraded from KDE 3.5 to KDE 4, and I have been having weird issues with my keyboard. In one of the virtual consoles e.g. when I press ctrl + alt 1 , I can type perfectly, but in KDE, several of the number keys don't work, the left and right arrows don't work either. I'm slowly beginning to wade through the mountains of documentation about the X keyboard model, but there has to be a better way. Does anyone no what it is? Edit: 1234567890 ! after deleting the entire .kde folder. but only until I change the Keyboard settings from the "system settings" applet, then its hosed full time. Regardless of what I set the settings too. (restore to default settings doesn't) 2nd Edit: I'm using Gentoo AMD64, I was upgrading from KDE 3.5 KDE 4.2. I think I had manual settings before, although I didn't change anything. I was originally running KDE without HAL until that stop working a year or so ago.
