• Unity and games don't work on new Thinkpad T420

  Here's my setup: Lenovo ThinkPad T420, brand new NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB of Ram 128GB Solid State Drive Intel Core i5 Processor Given these specs, there's no reason games and Unity shouldn't be working. The strange thing is that both do work when I run from a live USB, but not when Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive. Is there something different with the 3D capabilities of running from the computer as opposed to running from the live USB? Edit: Some more information: When I log in for the first time when running from the hard drive, Ubuntu says "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment."

• Where did my hard drive go?

  I installed XBMCbuntu 11.0 to my Zotac Zbox AD03 with an OCZ Reflex 4 256gb SSK. The install worked fine and I was getting accustomed to the appearance and operation. When I attempted to boot from power-off the BIOS could no longer find the SSD. It refused to boot and when I checked in the BIOS, the SSD was missing from the boot list (it was there prior to the install). I rebooted from the install CD but when the system started it could not find the SSD. I replaced the SSD with a fresh one of the same type and reinstalled XBMCbuntu. This time I rebooted from the system several times successfully but when I shut it down and tried to cold boot, this drive was also gone. Does the installation do something strange to the boot record that could cause a BIOS to lose it? How do I fix this? mike

• Unity launcher autohide leaves "ghost" behind?

  In 12.04 I had the launcher set to autohide, which worked perfectly. However in 12.10 I am getting a strange "ghost" issue. Take this screenshot, with me having a maximised google chrome window, mousing over the back button. As well as this, I also get another ghosting issue when I have the panel set with an opacity, whereby whatever is in approximately the middle left of the screen gets mirrored up to to panel, but only when I move/switch to a window. But that one is not so annoying as the autohide bug, how can I fix that?

• Problem when scaling game screen in Libgdx

  Currently, I'm able to scale the screen by applying this bit of code onto an OrthographicCamera Camera.setToOrtho(true, Gdx.graphics.getWidth() / 2, Gdx.graphics.getHeight() / 2); But something quite strange is happening with this solution, take a look at this picture of my game below Seems fine right? But upon further investigation, many components are rendered off by one pixels, and the tiles all are. Take a closer look I circled a couple of the errors. Note that the shadow of the warrior I circled appears fine for the other warriors. Also keep in mind that everything is rendered at pixel-perfect precision when I disable the scaling. I actually thought of a possible source for the problem as I'm writing this but I decided to still post this because I would assume somebody else might run into the same issue.

• wrong GNOME logo at startup after 12.04 upgrade

  I'm not too expert of Ubuntu, but after a quite painful upgrade to version 12.04 (from 11.10), which first required to reinstall wireless drivers in order to work properly, and after an update from the Update Manager that I ran soon after the upgrade, I have a very strange problem coming up: at login page, where you choose your user among the list of the available ones, I can also see the list of available IDEs (Gnome, Gnome classic, Unity, Unity 2d, etc) but the funny thing is that the classic "foot" logo normally associated to the GNOME selection has now disappeared, and instead the "gear" logo (the one normally related to Unity, is on the side of the "gnome" choice. Note that the foot logo remains associated to the Gnome Classic item, and that the "gear" logo is still associated to the various versions of Unity available. This is not serious, since I can still access my GNOME or Unity environment, but I wonder if I can fix this up.

• How to restart WiFi interface without rebooting (it drops connection)?

  I boot into ubuntu and it connects to the Wifi network fine. After about 10-15min the DNS stop resolving any website and a couple of minutes later network-managers tells me that I'm disconnected and tries to reconnect constantly to my router and fails to do it. Upon Ubuntu restart everything works fine for the first 10-15min again. When I boot into Mac OS X everything is fine with the same connection! How do I restart wifi interface? sudo ifdow wlan0 just tells me that wlan0 is not configured and wlan0 doesn't appear in /etc/network/interfaces either, which I find strange.... (unless network-manager is doing it behind my back).

• Reading cpu temperature Intel Celeron (R) with lm-sensors

  I know there are already a lot of questions like this, but non of the answers provided there could fix my problem. I try to read out my cpu temperature with lm-sensors on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation but I can't get to work. I did try the command sensors-detect several times but still nothing. My computer is an old PC with an Intel Celeron (R) @ 2.60 GHz. The odd thing is that the hdd temp is shown in the applet but when I type in the terminal sensors I get the error: "No sensors found! Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need." I'm not really interested in the hdd temperature but I think it is strange that these sensors do work in the applet and not in the terminal. • problem with template: negative margins on float

  hi, i'm having a very strange problem with the wordpress template. i'd like to place 2 divs besides each other like this: <div style='float:left;'> left div </div> <div style='float:right'> right div </div> normally this works as it should - both divs should stick directly to each other - but something in the style.css (which uses css reset) causes the right div to overlap the left div with ~ 5pixels. i searched the whole .css for it but couldn't find out :(( it's just a fact that it must be something with the default css. anyone knows what is causing this - some fix? thanks

• Do you think code is self documenting?

  This is a question that was put to me many years ago as a gradute in a job interview and it's nagged at my brain now and again and I've never really found a good answer that satisfied me. The interviewer in question was looking for a black and white answer, there was no middle ground. I never got the chance to ask about the rationale behind the question, but I'm curious why that question would be put to a developer and what you would learn from a yes or no answer? From my own point of view, I can read Java, Python, Delphi etc, but if my manager comes up to me and asks me how far along in a project I am and I say "The code is 80% complete" (and before you start shooting me down, I've heard this uttered in a couple of offices by developers), how exactly is that self documenting? Apologies if this question seems strange, but I'd rather ask and get some opinions on it to gain a better understanding of why it would be put to someone in an interview.

• Combining Shared Secret and Certificates

  As discussed in the introduction article this walkthrough will explain how you can implement WCF security with the Windows Azure Service Bus to ensure that you can protect your endpoint in the cloud with a shared secret but also combine this with certificates so that you can identify the sender of the message.   Prerequisites As in the previous article before going into the walk through I want to explain a few assumptions about the scenario we are implementing but to keep the article shorter I am not going to walk through all of the steps in how to setup some of this. In the solution we have a simple console application which will represent the client application. There is also the services WCF application which contains the WCF service we will expose via the Windows Azure Service Bus. The WCF Service application in this example was hosted in IIS 7 on Windows 2008 R2 with AppFabric Server installed and configured to auto-start the WCF listening services. I am not going to go through significant detail around the IIS setup because it should not matter in relation to this article however if you want to understand more about how to configure WCF and IIS for such a scenario please refer to the following paper which goes into a lot of detail about how to configure this. The link is: http://tinyurl.com/8s5nwrz   Setting up the Certificates To keep the post and sample simple I am going to use the local computer store for all certificates but this bit is really just the same as setting up certificates for an example where you are using WCF without using Windows Azure Service Bus. In the sample I have included two batch files which you can use to create the sample certificates or remove them. Basically you will end up with: A certificate called PocServerCert in the personal store for the local computer which will be used by the WCF Service component A certificate called PocClientCert in the personal store for the local computer which will be used by the client application A root certificate in the Root store called PocRootCA with its associated revocation list which is the root from which the client and server certificates were created   For the sample Im just using development certificates like you would normally, and you can see exactly how these are configured and placed in the stores from the batch files in the solution using makecert and certmgr.   The Service Component To begin with let's look at the service component and how it can be configured to listen to the service bus using a shared secret but to also accept a username token from the client. In the sample the service component is called Acme.Azure.ServiceBus.Poc.Cert.Services. It has a single service which is the Visual Studio template for a WCF service when you add a new WCF Service Application so we have a service called Service1 with its Echo method. Nothing special so far!.... The next step is to look at the web.config file to see how we have configured the WCF service. In the services section of the WCF configuration you can see I have created my service and I have created a local endpoint which I simply used to do a little bit of diagnostics and to check it was working, but more importantly there is the Windows Azure endpoint which is using the ws2007HttpRelayBinding (note that this should also work just the same if your using netTcpRelayBinding). The key points to note on the above picture are the service behavior called MyServiceBehaviour and the service bus endpoints behavior called MyEndpointBehaviour. We will go into these in more detail later.   The Relay Binding The relay binding for the service has been configured to use the TransportWithMessageCredential security mode. This is the important bit where the transport security really relates to the interaction between the service and listening to the Azure Service Bus and the message credential is where we will use our certificate like we have specified in the message/clientCrentialType attribute. Note also that we have left the relayClientAuthenticationType set to RelayAccessToken. This means that authentication will be made against ACS for accessing the service bus and messages will not be accepted from any sender who has not been authenticated by ACS.   The Endpoint Behaviour In the below picture you can see the endpoint behavior which is configured to use the shared secret client credential for accessing the service bus and also for diagnostic purposes I have included the service registry element.     Hopefully if you are familiar with using Windows Azure Service Bus relay feature the above is very familiar to you and this is a very common setup for this section. There is nothing specific to the username token implementation here. The Service Behaviour Now we come to the bit with most of the certificate stuff in it. When you configure the service behavior I have included the serviceCredentials element and then setup to use the clientCertificate check and also specifying the serviceCertificate with information on how to find the servers certificate in the store.     I have also added a serviceAuthorization section where I will implement my own authorization component to perform additional security checks after the service has validated that the message was signed with a good certificate. I also have the same serviceSecurityAudit configuration to log access to my service. My Authorization Manager The below picture shows you implementation of my authorization manager. WCF will eventually hand off the message to my authorization component before it calls the service code. This is where I can perform some logic to check if the identity is allowed to access resources. In this case I am simple rejecting messages from anyone except the PocClientCertificate.     The Client Now let's take a look at the client side of this solution and how we can configure the client to authenticate against ACS but also send a certificate over to the service component so it can implement additional security checks on-premise. I have a console application and in the program class I want to use the proxy generated with Add Service Reference to send a message via the Azure Service Bus. You can see in my WCF client configuration below I have setup my details for the azure service bus url and am using the ws2007HttpRelayBinding.   Next is my configuration for the relay binding. You can see below I have configured security to use TransportWithMessageCredential so we will flow the token from a certificate with the message and also the RelayAccessToken relayClientAuthenticationType which means the component will validate against ACS before being allowed to access the relay endpoint to send a message.     After the binding we need to configure the endpoint behavior like in the below picture. This contains the normal transportClientEndpointBehaviour to setup the ACS shared secret configuration but we have also configured the clientCertificate to look for the PocClientCert.     Finally below we have the code of the client in the console application which will call the service bus. You can see that we have created our proxy and then made a normal call to a WCF in exactly the normal way but the configuration will jump in and ensure that a token is passed representing the client certificate.     Conclusion As you can see from the above walkthrough it is not too difficult to configure a service to use both a shared secret and certificate based token at the same time. This gives you the power and protection offered by the access control service in the cloud but also the ability to flow additional tokens to the on-premise component for additional security features to be implemented. • How do I get the Netgear N150 USB wifi adapter working on 12.04?

  Just installed latest version of ubuntu. I'm using a Netgear N150 Wireless USB Micro Adapter WNA1000M which keeps asking for network password over and over. I read elsewhere that I needed to install the latest driver for my chipset (RTL8188CUS) which I have and still no joy. If I run the steps listed in this thread while connected through ethernet, the wireless will connect just fine. If I disconnect the ethernet, the wifi will even continue to work, but after a restart or two I will lose connection. If I repeat the steps listed in the aforementioned thread, it will not re-connect wifi unless I run those steps while connected to ethernet.......so strange...

• Can using an apt proxy (d-i mirror/http/proxy string http://mymirror) affect the installation of a .deb?

  I have been doing Ubuntu deployment using a preseed.cfg. After becoming comfortable with the packages being installed it was time to reduce download time and internet traffic by creating a mirror. I ended up doing a "partial mirror" using apt-cacher-ng and preseeding it by adding d-i mirror/http/proxy string http://mymirror to the preseed.cfg. This is where things got strange. I have a few .debs that I run as part of preseed/late_command by wgetting them and installing them with dpkg -i. The packages were installing without issue until added the proxy. With the proxy they fail to install. So does the proxy affect installing .debs during preseeded installation?

• Github Feed affecting my WordPress installation? [on hold]

  Any idea how this fork is affecting my site? I went to verify my website log stats, and realized this may be the cause of a strange redirect constantly happening on my WordPress installation. Here's a line I found on my log: 54.81.91.95 - - [07/May/2014:22:52:08 -0400] "GET /category/selfie/feed/ HTTP/1.1" 200 1826 "-" "feedzirra http://github.com/pauldix/feedzirra/tree/master" And this is the Github fork (or however these are called). https://github.com/feedjira/feedjira/tree/master Basically, I think everytime I update my categories, (selfie in this case), I get redirected to install.php. Probably by triggering some GET function on that feed. to the best of my knowledge, this feed parses all url with this structure, blocking them, kind of like a DDoS attack?? Any ideas how to go about it??

• Pointer problem on external monitor

  Pointer looks and work fine on laptop but when I connect external monitor it appears there as a shaking, square shape. Videos are not showing either. my laptop hp 2133: Graphic card: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN896/VN896/P4M900, Chrome 9 HC. System: Lubuntu 12.04 I think it is graphic problem but can't find drivers for my card and system. I do have xserver-xorg-video-openchrome and disper installed. I did not have that problem with Lubuntu 11.10. My problem is a bit like : Mouse pointer strange problem but it was not solved so I decided to post my question.

• Can you find the problem in my boot-info

I got several different types of not-booting until now. All without significant error messages. Now that I'm running out of ideas I thought maybe one of you is able to find my mistake. • No voice on front headphone port.

  I have a strange problem. It just happen recently, when I accidentally unplug my headphone. But I unplugged it before and nothing happen. Basically now, when I use my headphone through front jack, when playing videos, I can't hear voice. Only background music. Using kde sound setup, pressing front left and front right test button, result in a mono sound. No distinction between right and left. This only happen with front jack. Rear jack is working fine.

• Why Ubuntu is not booting anymore from USB live?

  I have just purchased a brand new laptop Samsung 300e5c with Windows 7. So I have reduce the windows partition and I have installed ubuntu 12.04 from my USB pen drive. Then I have tried to boot again from USB pen drive but it doesn't work anymore. I have tryed to boot on others laptop from my USB pen drive and it does work perfectly. but on my laptop, NO :(. I have set all USB drive as first boot device in BIOS. I have tryed on each USB port of my laptop but it doesn't work. Only the first time it did work when I installed ubuntu and now it doesn't work anymore. It's very strange I can see the content of the usb pen drive on my laptop and on others laptop without problems. why it doesn't work anymore ?

• What are the files in /dev/input/ and what they do?

  I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've started to search around everywhere and check everything! Recently I saw these files at /dev/input/eventX, js0, mice, mouseX. By printing the output using "cat" I realized they are somehow responsible for mouse and keyboard input but the output had an strange character encoding (even for the keyboard). My questions are, what are these files and how can I interpret the data of these files? Are there any other places that I can access the input/output of my Ubuntu machine? And are there any ebooks, manual or something similar that I can check the duty and structure of ubuntu system files? (i.e. to find the answer of such question)

• Is it illegal to forward copyrighted content? [closed]

  Ok, this may be a strange question, but let's start: If I illegally download a movie (for example...) from a HTTP Web Server, there are many routers between me and the Web Server which are forwarding the data to my PC. As I understand, the owners of the routers are not legally responsible for the data they forward (please correct if I'm wrong). What if I would install a client of a peer-to-peer network on my PC and this client (peer) would forward copyrighted content received from peers to other peers? Hope someone understand what I mean ;-) Any answer or comment would be highly appreciated. Mike Update 1: I'm asking this question because I want to develop a p2p-application and try to figure out how to prevent illegal content sharing/distribution (if forwarding content is really illegal...) Update 2: What if the data forwarded by my peer is encrypted, so I'm technically not able to read and check it?

• Dealing with frustration when things don't work.

You keep trying different workarounds but every time something different isn't working. Every time you get one step closer you also get one (or more) step farther from solving this problem and its now been 3 hours when this should have taken you 10 minutes. And it still isn't solved. There is no one in your company who can help, and you are about to put your fist through your screen. At this point you are so frustrated you can no longer think about the problem clearly. What should you do at this point? Or what can you do to avoid reaching this point?

• Boot time seems unusually long on MSI GX660R (bootchart included)

  After upgrading (clean install) to Ubuntu 12.04, the speed issue when running programs has reduced on my MSI GX660R laptop. However, the boot time is still much longer (over a minute, even after BIOS) than on the many less powerful laptops I have encountered running the same OS, and I was wondering if anyone could help me improve it. I use the FGLRX driver, if that makes any difference. I have uploaded a boot chart, it can be found here http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/bootchartl.png/ As you can see, the boot time is over a minute even after BIOS. A 'designed for Vista' laptop from ages ago which I installed Ubuntu on boots in around thirty seconds, so I think it's a bit strange. • Where should people give feedback on Ubuntu?

  Many people have opinions or want to give feedback about Ubuntu. If they are simple bugs with a crash or display corruption, that's fine, they can file in Launchpad. But, comments about the design or concept of the system are more problematic. They come up all over the place, such as "Some Unity feedback" in other places that are not really about Unity. Ideally the answer will be a place where the comments will actually be read by the design team will tend to encourage people to read the existing comments and not post the same thing again and again perhaps will tend to bubble up good solutions rather than strange ideas will not be annoying to people who are trying to use that place for something else

• How to change the default desktop environment?

  I wanted to try out different desktop environments so I installed XFCE, KDE, GNOME, etc on top of Unity in Ubuntu 12.04 After a while I decided that I didn't like those other DEs and would stick to Unity. So I changed my default DE to Unity by configuring gdm. > sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm Now I am able to choose my DE at login time and all of DEs are working properly. But the strange thing is that my boot up screen says 'lubuntu', my login screen is KDE, and my desktop is Unity. How and why is this happening? Why didn't my gdm configuration have any effect? Does login and boot up screen need to be configured separately from the DE? There are other similar questions here but they are not the same as this one. I do not want to remove the other enviroments I'm quite happy with having a list of DEs to select from. I want to know how to set proper defaults.
