• Profiling and Graphics.updateDisplay0()

  I am profiling my BlackBerry application (a game) with the options 'In method only' and 'Time including native method'. Under the 'All methods' node (after a decent run of the game) the single most time consuming function is Graphics.updateDisplay0() with over 50% of the run time spent there. I don't quite know what is the purpose of that function or if I can do anything to reduce its processing time, so if anyone can shed some light on the matter, I would be grateful. Because from what I understand with the 'In method only' option, it means there is some processing within that function. ps. there is no information on that function in the documentation.

• How to write a tool, inverting colors in Windows?

  I read a topic in this site about it, but decided to post another one as I want to write such a tool, but I don't have much experience in C# & .NET, so it could take me too much time just digging the Net, while someone can just direct me to the right library or classes to be used. So, straight to the point. I want to write a tool that, when activated, inverts absolutely all items on the screen and lets you work that way without torturing your eyes with bright light colors. Does anyone have an idea of the needed .NET libraries or third-party frameworks, to implement this? Any help will be greatly appreciated! P.S. Changing to "High Contrast" theme in Windows is not the solution I seek, so please, don't mention it!

• Regular non-low energy bluetooth for IOS

  Ok, so I can't get my app to connect with a peripheral using bluetooth low-energy(my app is installed on an iPhone 5s and I have LightBlue installed on an iPhone 4S, simulating a peripheral. I also have light blue installed on the 5s, simulating a central, to verify that the two can connect and they do.) I have verified that the centralManager is instantiating and the State is powered on. So, my question is, is regular bluetooth still a viable option? Can I just use the GameKit API and go that route? • My website crashes Firefox. What do I do?

  My website doesn't use Flash or any plugins; just javascript (jQuery, Google Maps). It doesn't crash FF 3.6 all the time, but it usually does after a few minutes. It can happen on lots of different pages. Sometimes it crashes when I'm scrolling the page, sometimes when I'm interacting with a control. Where do I even start debugging? Should I go through the hassle of attaching gdb to Firefox and getting a stack trace, then praying that it sheds some light on the offending code?

  I'm a python guy and very new to R (so far, all I've done is copy-paste code and screen-shot the resulting, graph). I would now like to actually learn the language so that I can draw useful plots (right now, I am trying to plot this). In attempting my first plot, I came across this function call: sets_options("universe", seq(from = 0, to = 25, by = 0.1)) Now, I would like to know if I can achieve the same result by calling sets_options("universe", seq(0, 25, 0.1)) The help page for seq doesn't speak to this specifically (or I'm not reading it correctly), so I was hoping someone could shed some light on how R handles positional arguments I tried calling the function that way in R and it worked (no syntax errors, etc), but I don't know how to test the output of that function, so I'm forced to ask here

Actuelly, I want to retrieve a large amount of data from an oracle database, so I write the code like this: sql = "Select * from CORE_DB where MC = '" & mstr & "' " Set myrs = db_execute_query(curConnection, sql) Then I count the rows in myrs,there are 248 rows. So then I do a For loop to retrieve some fields of each row. For k = 0 To db_get_rows_count(myrs) But then I found that the content of the row k when k 133 was always equal to k = 133. So this makes an error. As I think, there may be a limit size of mrys ? Could anyone light me about this? Thanks a lot in advance

  Take a programmer that has never used source control, show them what it does, and their eyes light up... the benefits are obvious but until they actually see it most people had never considered the existence of such a tool. What other such things exist? Tools or approaches or techniques that aren't obvious before you encounter them, but once seen have obvious value. Things that are likely so ingrained in the way you work that it's hard to think of working without them, things almost embarrassing to bring up because you expect the other person to say "duh, that's obvious!" No matter how petty something seems there is a chance that other people don't know about it yet; I'd like to get an idea on what things I'm missing simply because I never thought of them.

  I'm stuck at how to save the state of my EditTexts on screen orientation. Currently if text is inputted into the EditTexts and the screen is orientated, the fields are wiped (as expected). I am already calling onSaveInstanceState and saving a String, but I have no clue on how to save the EditTexts which are created in code and then retrieve them and add them to the EditTexts when redrawing the activity. The only difference I can see between the machines is possibly permissions. But I don't see how that would affect xcopy's ability to recognize a local path.

• Creating a computer with pencil and paper [closed]

  This concept has been brought to my attention before, but many people might know it from this popular comic here, where he uses stones instead of points on a paper. This concept is so abstract to me. A full-functioning computer that can manage algorithms, input, output, etc. without electricity? Surely, it's difficult to visualize because my definition of a computer is not exactly what the word sounds like COMPUTE-ER. Can someone help me bring the concept to light - the understanding, how to make one, etc? It seems like it'd be an interesting read, although I think I wouldn't be able to make it do anything. • "Othello" game needs some clarification

  I am trying to see if my understanding of "othello" fame is correct or not. According to the rules, we flip the dark/light sides if we get some sequence like X000X = XXXXX. The question I have is if in the process of flipping 0-X or X- 0, do we also need to consider the rows/columns/diagonals of newly flipped elements? e.g. consider board state as shown in above image(New element X is placed @ 2,3) When we update board, we mark elements from 2,3 to 6,3 as Xs but in this process elements like horizontal 4,3 to 4,5 and diagonal 2,3 to 4,5 are also eligible for update? so do we update those elements as well? or just the elements which have starting as 2,3 (i.e update rows/column/diagonal whose starting point is the element we are dealing with, in our case 2,3?) Please help me understand it

• Why Flash can't be rendered in a Windows Service?

  I'm trying to solve a similar problem as was described here - to create a Windows Service for taking snapshots of rich webpages (html+js+flash) and saving them to a PDF file. The bundle Firefox+cmdlnprint did the trick for me. I wrote a simple program running as a service that invokes Firefox to make a PDF. All seems well, the PDF gets created, but Flash is completely missing. Although, when started not as a service, Flash renders just fine. Can anyone shed a light on what blocks Flash from rendering and if there's a workaround? thanks!

However, it seems like the compiler allocates more (or I'm missing something). • Is there anything wrong with taking immediate actions in constructors?

  I have classes like this one: class SomeObject { public function __construct($param1, $param2) { $this->process($param1, $param2); } ... } So I can instantly "call" it as some sort of global function just like new SomeObject($arg1, $arg2); which has the benefits of staying concise, being easy to understand, but might break unwritten rules of semantics by not waiting till a method is called. Should I continue to feel bad because of a bad practice, or there's really nothing to worry about? Clarification: I do want an instance of the class. I do use internal methods of the class only. I initialize the object in the constructor, but call the "important" action-taker methods too. I am selfish in the light of these sentences.

• Problem compiling mod_wsgi for python2.6 on Cent OS 5.3

  I am running a website on CentOS 5.3. I understand centos will break if the default python 2.4 is upgraded. I followed this site (http://www.question-defense.com/2009/12/25/how-to-install-python-2-6-on-centos-5-without-breaking-yum) and got python 2.6 installed. Now if I run "python" it runs python2.4 and if I run "python26" it runs python2.6. I am trying to compile mod_wsgi-3.2. When it run ./configure it takes only python 2.4 environment. I have tried using the --with-python=/usr/bin/python26. That way, "make" command does not work. Can someone throw some light on this? Thanks in advance

• What is the absolute fastest way to implement a concurrent queue with ONLY one consumer and one producer?

  java.util.concurrent.ConcurrentLinkedQueue comes to mind, but is it really optimum for this two-thread scenario? I am looking for the minimum latency possible on both sides (producer and consumer). If the queue is empty you can immediately return null AND if the queue is full you can immediately discard the entry you are offering. Does ConcurrentLinkedQueue use super fast and light locks (AtomicBoolean) ? Has anyone benchmarked ConcurrentLinkedQueue or knows about the ultimate fastest way of doing that? Additional Details: I imagine the queue should be a fair one, meaning the consumer should not make the consumer wait any longer than it needs (by front-running it) and vice-versa.

  Alright, so I was wondering if there was an alternative, lightweight way to creating an image map. Basically, I want to take this image: And have the sections of the diagram light up when they are hovered over, kinda like this (I've mocked it up in photoshop): The other sections (which I haven't named yet) should be able to do the same. Also, I'd like to be able to use javascript later to have sliding links appear from behind those sections (I roughly know how to do that now, so I'm okay that) Does anyone have any suggestions? • Checkbox not checking inside div in Firefox

  Weird problem. I don't know if anyone can shed some light on this? I have a checkbox inside a div. It works fine in IE but not Firefox. I have to click the space around the checkbox that is occupied by the div (sort of like a label) for the checkbox to tick on and off. Directly clicking the checkbox does not show it as ticked on or off, even though in firebug it is showing that it is in a checked state and an unchecked state. Only in FF does this happen.....

  Hi all, I keep all modules of our system in one dir (e.g. All\ModuleA; All\ModuleB). I want to see what types of files are most numerous and take up the most space, by module. So, I'd like output along the lines of: ModName,java-count,java-size,xml-count,xml-size,png-count,png-size... ModuleA,30,0.2,100,2.3,0,0,... ModuleB,21,0.1,20,0.7,1,1.2 Not all modules have files of all types, so this will only work if I list all types for all module (with lots of zeros). I have something that almost works, but it's hideous, verbose and inefficient. I'm sure someone can help me see the light :-) (which, by the way, can be a piece of freeware software that does this out of the box; I only chose to do this in powershell out of interest). thanks
